Covid struck before our teacher went through the essay questions, and I’m taking the October exams never having been taught this, this is super helpful, thank you!
Thank you and the best of luck for your October exams! I also did a follow up essay writing workshop on my Instagram you may find helpful. Its a video on my feed, going through a whole essay plan and marking students' essays to show you how the mark scheme is applied. Just search MissEstruchBiology on Instagram and the video is on my feed.
Hello miss Estruch, I would like to thank you because of your helpful videos which caused me to get 23/25 in my biology essay only because of your good and accurate predictions. I LOVE YOU ALOT.❤❤❤
Hi Miss Estruch, this video was really helpful as I am taking the paper 3 exam soon. Do you recommend doing the essay first or doing the paper in order ? Thank you
Hello, If you head over to my Instagram (MissEstruchBiology) and look on my feed, I have a IGTV video where I go through how best to approach paper 3! I think this will help you. I suggest reading the two essay titles first, but then answer all the questions first. This means your brain will subconsciously consider the two titles and potential topics and make it easier for you to write the essay at the end. Make sure you keep an eye of the time and leave yourself a minimum of 40 minutes for the essay whether you have finished the questions or not.
Thank you so much!!! This video was so useful - just for the diffusion question, can I talk about facilitated diffusion too or is it just simple diffusion?
Hello Miss Estruch, for talking about the effect of temperature on proteins, could I talk about how denaturation of stretch mediated sodium channels could allow it to become permanently permeable to Na+ ions there cause too many action potentials? I'm not too sure whether this would be a valid idea.. thank you!
The fact that i have to watch this video makes me despise AQA and whoever decided to make section B essay based, especially when chem AQA section B is multiple choice 😭 whyyy
This was so helpful, thank you! If the focus of the question is the uses of something rather than its importance, how would you do your AO2 application/link back to the question?
I haven't actually seen that as a title on the new specification and don't think it would, BUT IF it did I would give the uses as AO1 and then still explain why that use is important for AO2. Hope that helps ☺
My biology teacher said that if you write two paragraphs from the same topic, say one on food webs and one on the nitrogen cycle, the less detailed and 'worse' paragraph gets automatically discredited and you wouldn't get any marks for it. Is that true?
Thank you for this video it was very helpful. I have a question though. In the 'relational' box it says the points must be interrelated. Does this mean the points should relate to each other AND the title/theme ?
Hi Miss Estruch, does the importance paragraph need to be related to the topic of the essay or can it just be a downstream process of the content paragraph which is related to the topic …?
For instance: topic of the essay is importance of ATP/ the content paragraph is about how ATP is used for protein synthesis and then the importance paragraph is about why it’s important for proteins to be synthesized…
By "4 different topics," would I be correcting in assuming any sub topic from the spec? As in 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3 etc. I just want to make sure they're not asking for 4 units of the 8 in the spec.
Yes that is correct. You can talk about two topics from the same spec point, as long as they are different concepts. E.g. cardiac cycle and transpiration. BUT gas exchange in fish and gas exchange in humans would be too similar as these are both the same concept of gas exchange
@@MissEstruchBiology So would photosynthesis and respiration count as different topics, particularly oxidative phosphorylation in respiration and chemiosmosis in L.D.R
Hello, Nope, no need for the AQA essay. The examiners report states every year that no introduction or conclusion are needed and that students shouldn't waste valuable exam time on this .
They aren't. IAA is topic 6 and chemiosmosis is topic 5. You can have theory from within the same topic though, as long as its a different concept. Hope that helps 😊
Will you score more marks if you use content from 2nd year compared to first year or does it not make a difference as long as it’s part of the a level content?
Hello, No, topics 5-8 won't score you any more marks than content from topics 1-4. The key is making sure you pick a relevant topic and explain it at A-level standard and apply it to the question at A-level standard (explaining the importance of).
if we did something off the spec, can it just be a smaller paragraph on its own at the end, or does it need to be included into every paragraph we write? and if the extra spec paragraph is not written as well and detailed as the stuff on spec and our paragraphs, will it lower the mark for the entire essay?
Hello, Sorry I didn't get round to replying in time! I have been busy in neonatal with my new born twins (home now finally :D ) I hope you found the essay ok in the exam.
I really hope you are able to respond to this before Friday lol. If I included Cholera as advanced information, could that be my fourth paragraph? or would my answer require four points PLUS an additional one off the spec for top marks? THANK YOU!
@@MissEstruchBiology Thank you for your quick reply (: So if I add it to one of my paragraphs I already have, for example if it was talking about diffusion of water into and out of the collecting duct, I can add a bit on the end about the movement of water of someone with cholera? Would that work?
Hello, Good question. This is a common misconception due to the language used in the mark scheme 'paragraphs are interrelated'. Each paragraph can be independent of all others, they do not have to link. The phrase interrelated paragraphs refers to the fact that in each paragraph you must link your knowledge of the theory to the theme of the question (explaining why it is important in biology/organisms).
