  • Ami P. Kang (LCSW and Assistant Clinical Director) and Timothy Meyer (LCSW and Director of Clinical Operations) speak about the first phases in EMDR treatment and how absolutely essential they are to healing. This can mean they take longer to get through than clients would like, but they are the foundation of the treatment, and, really, these phases are all about who the client is, in a very deep and investigatory way. Phase 1 is about truly knowing the client, their obstacles, their traumas, their past, present, and possible futures. And Phase 2 focuses on building skills to help them with their history, their current challenges, the new ones they will face in treatment, and maintaining their success in the future.

I heard Bessel Van Der Kolk say that in EMDR the therapist virtually doesn't need to know much about the patient's history or any details of the trauma, etc; they'll be acting more as a guide asking to notice this, pay attention, etc.. -- and only when something intense and worth diving into comes up during the session, they can, again, guide the patient to go deeper etc.
