My daughter did a $10 an hour internship in a private firm for her jr and sr year but it also counted as credits for her so it was a double blessing. The experience she earned at the internship landed here in the $55K-$60K range for her job in TN. She acquired a job within one month of being out of school. I would encourage anyone to ensure they do an internship because this gave her experience but also if you can't find full-time work seek out work through Accountemps for contract work if there is one in your city.

I know 2 accountants in their 50s, they have an consulting firm and they have workers too. They have over 300 customers per month and are charging each customer from 300 to 500$. This was just for one month. They do other things as well. If you really like this job, get as much experience as possible and open your own consulting firm over this. Accountant jobs won’t die

    • @Humzahization
      @Humzahization 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@rishavsaha480 Accounting is mostly Interpretation and consulting. Most of the stuff we do in class like balance sheets and income statements are automated, we learn them so we can interpret them and find ways to accomplish our client's goal like max income or low income when unions try to shake down companies. Accountants interpret the numbers and advice their clients. As for newbies they do grunt work when it's auditing or tax-related.

This is such a great video for accounting students! I'm way behind, but this really depends on where you live too. In smaller areas $12 an hour for an intern is incredibly normal, especially since interns usually don't work full time. That's what I made as a tax intern working 30 hours an week in the spring, and I know others who did unpaid internships. I started in a small firm making $38k a year, made $52k in Kansas city as a tax staff, and now make $53k as an audit staff in a smaller city. Just wanted to share my experience!

    • @elliekotz4709
      @elliekotz4709 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

The internship was after BS in accounting, full time offer was contingent upon being CPA eligible (150 credit hours of school, I chose to get my masters in accounting). GPA/education level does not affect starting salary in big 4, just the city you're in (for people fresh out of school, if you're an experienced hire that's a different story). So everybody in my starting class has the same salary. I hope this answers your question, and let me know if you have any others!

Yeah, big 4 audit in CA checking in. Nice to see an accurate range compared to watching the vid (stopped watching after 45k-65k breakout where she said public was 45-49 lol). 48 is accurate for Utah or a small Midwest market, otherwise public outpays private most of the time. Tempted to create my own videos with actual examples lol

I like accounting. I am an accountant. It can be difficult at first but i think its learning the rules and the process. Then it gets really easy actually but can be tedious. What helps me is writing down a step by step process and keeping it handy for reference. The major thing with accounting is having the steps and the process. The most important thing is organization and just following the steps from beginning to end.

John, the math in introductory accounting courses is pretty easy, in fact, most of the math in accounting is easy. It’s simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and “algebra”. I put algebra in quotes because it’s SUPER easy algebra. Ex: if total sales were $10,000, and earnings before interest and tax was $6,000, what was cost of goods sold.
The difficulties people run into in accounting are all the rules, and processes. Accounting is SUPER conceptual. Math is the easy part, trust me. You’re given a bunch of info, and you’re expected to put the pieces together. If you are good at “puzzle” type games and ideas, you should be good with accounting.
Something the helped me and I still use is.... DC-ADE-LER
      D: debit
      C: credit
      A: assets
      D: draw
      E: expenses
      L: liability
      E: equity
      R: revenue
This may not make sense yet, but it will when you start to talk about debits and credits. I suggest you find some sort of acronym that helps you remember this because without this simple concept, you’ll never pass an accounting class.
      Good luck, you got this.

Good video! Besides location and a summer internship, the highest paying entry-level staff accounting jobs will often go to the best students. Accounting is one of those fields in which having a high GPA out of college can truly boost your starting salary to the high end of that 45k-65k range.

It 100% depends on where you live. In my experience where i live you can most likely expect to not be payed at all for internships (I was not payed and only know 1 friend that was payed for her internship) and as for pay upon graduation the most a starting staff accountant can hope to be payed is about 12 bucks an hour average would be about 10 and for lowest it would be min wage.
Internships are easy enough to come by at all times and jobs a little bit less so depends on the season of the year. I am a public accountant currently unemployed because i am concentrated on the cpa exams and am half way through them.

Sara Marie I live in Puerto Rico it is a US territory my accounting license is only valid for PR but if i aquire my CPA license (Which is what i am currently in the process of doing) it is the same as it is in all of the US and can be used to work in any state.
Puerto Rico has the lowest average income of all of the states and territories of the US this is why the pay seems so low to you but cost of life is also much lower here (over twice as low).
Here is a link to all the states average income and you can see PR is at the bottom.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_income?wprov=sfla1
But university is free for everyone in Puerto Rico which is why we have such high graduate numbers that move abroad once they finish their education which is what i plan to do.

    For those sophomore/junior accounting majors:
I have an internship this Spring at a mid-tier in Nashville, TN. I received several offers ($22-$26/ hour).
Applied as a junior for Summer Leadership events with several firms. 3.6 GPA. 1 year (nonaccounting related) work experience. Leadership role in an accounting club. Member of 3 other accounting clubs. Volunteer experience. Did well in informal-ish interviews and was selected. Networked while having fun and got offers from all summer leadership events I attended. Hotel, flight, and food were all paid for.
My tips: apply to as many summer leadership events as possible, and do well at the events! That way, you are offered an internship for the upcoming Spring/Summer and can skip fall recruitment (Meet The Firms).

Most firms want you to be “eligible to sit” for the CPA exam. Definitely speak to a counselor and figure out what credits you’d need to sit. In my experience most firms don’t care so much about the degrees you have, just as long as you have the credits to sit. Hope that helps 😊

However, if it was me, and I had other offers, I would just explain that I have multiple offers and that I would love to intern with their company but I was offered more somewhere else. Not sure that's the "correct" way but if a place really wants you, they'll make it work.

It varies a lot of experiences, background and location. I was in a Master's Program for Accounting. I ended up leaving, but I still have contacts. A few of my friends are coming to Dallas to work for one of the big 4. They have backgrounds in Finance and Economics. One of my friend has a degree in psychology. They have accepted offers at around $40-45K. One of my friend was offered around $55 K for the big 4 since she has around 10 years of experience in a legal firm. In a private accounting firm, you earn a bit more. My classmate accepted an offer from a tech company for around $70k. He has about 5 years of accounting experience.

The biggest difference is where you live. Living in Florida, a small rural area, starts you with a BA at about $41,000-$52,000. CPA non-partner is generally around $65,000-$70,000. Partners generate about $180,000-$250,000 distributions/payroll. You can go about 2.5 hours away to Orlando or Tampa and start at about $50,000-$60,000.

Hey, im a current graduate student majoring in accounting. I just finished my undergrad this past summer.
Your first few accounting classes should give you a pretty good idea of if you like accounting or not. But don’t worry about choosing a particular field as a freshman. Your later accounting classes (intermediate, advanced, tax, audit) will likely influence your final choice alot.

Accountants in public service i.e. federal government tend to make more than accountants in the private sector. There are accountants in the federal government that make 80k-90k and the position is non-supervisory. Granted that is with a few years of experience under your belt. I’ve seen some non-supervisory accountants that make over 100k.

Wow! These figures are high compared to the UK. An ICAEW Chartered Accountant can expect to make £90k (about $117k) with 6-9 years’ post qualification experience and usually someone earning that salary is working as a group financial controller in a large company or a finance director in a company with £100m turnover. Graduates usually make around £25k ($32.5k). On qualification as a chartered accountant, you can expect between £40k-£50k ($52k-$65k).

My salary plus the opprtunity for quarterly bonuses that can reach upwards of 3k every 3 months is why my biggest fear is that I would reach a point after graduating where I have to take a pay cut i. Switching over to accounting. Im hoping that banking will only help my resume and not have me starting like a fresh graduate with no work experience.

Working in Chicago, these numbers make sense. Move to a smaller town like Birmingham (I was there 3.5 years), and these numbers seem a bit inflated.
I worked for a private company in the internal audit group for 3 years before moving into private accounting. I’ve had a 48% pay increase over the last 5 years. But most of this came from factors outside of my control or leaving and accepting new positions with different companies.
Remember... most companies give small annual raises, so the lower you start off at, the harder it is to grow your salary without leaving for new positions.

(If anyone else can answer this I would be really grateful!)
What did you do for money while you were still in school? How did you pay for school? Was it difficult to have a job and go to school at the same time?
The thing that im worried about the most is wasting 5 years of my life at school and not get a good job that pays me well. Or what I will be doing in those 5 years to support myself and my family.
This is gonna sound ridiculous but right now I'm studying Web and Graphic design and i say ridiculous because I'm suddenly thinking of switching to accounting a completely different major... Its been 3 years since i graduated from highschool and ive fallen into depression and ended up not getting my associates degree in Web&Graphic design. I just didnt feel confident enough to be creative enough for this job or actually find a job here in Arizona. I'm just really really worried. I just really want a job that will pay well enough to support myself and my parents and give me time to spend with them as well. But 5 years is a lot especially since i waste 3 years in web and graphic design. I'll be 26 by that time and my parents will be 55 and 57.
I guess my biggest problem is worrying? I guess i just want reassurance bc idk what job is good for me. I chose Web&Graphic design cause I didn't hate it. But its not something I love. I used to love drawing but my HS ap studio art class kind of made me hate it. And the college made me stress even more. And now I can't open a laptop without getting that anxious feeling of turning in things on time or if I'm on the right track. I avoid using my laptop as much as possible now.

I know this question is old but I hope you found what you are looking for with the pay that fits your needs! I started off going through a temp agency looking for data entry positions and was assigned to a state agency working as an accounting technician. I had NO experience in accounting and I don’t have a degree. I decided to work the job anyways and it ended up being a temp to hire position. I was there for three years and moved on from that position because the pay wasn’t as great which was like $21/hr. I needed more since I also have a big family. I went through Robert Half’s staffing agency and was assigned to several different accounting jobs. I made a lot of connections where I could network with. I learned new things as well. My resume looks really good with having Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, small amount of HR, Purchasing. I’ve been hired at several different full time accounting jobs through indeed. I recently am moving on to another position where one of my old managers from a temp job that I had two years ago, contacted me to work for her making $65k/yr. Thats the most money I would had made in my life without working two jobs that I can support my family. I suggest starting off in a temp agency, have a little data entry, if you need help with typing speed you could also practice to get your skills up. Networking is a plus, make good connections where you go. You’ll have good references and sometimes can make long term friends who can let you know who is hiring or can get you in a place by vouching for you. I hope this helps!

@@SaraMarie in my country a typical newly-passed CPA earns 300 dollars a month...

I'm only making 44-45k at a small accounting firm. I live in an area where cost of living is below average. I passed the cpa less than a month ago. 4 years experience, but this is pretty much a dead-end job unfortunately. Time to update my resume and look elsewhere.

What did you major in? Are you a CPA?

Depends where. I got an accountant who has a master degree and has experience in investing. She has worked with Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley also AARP. She currently collects rents of 128 buildings. Her salary is $4000 a week, she has the option of getting a free apartment with 40 days of vacation. No insurance or anything of that. Just the money and deal with it.
Her duties are collect rents and issue a receipt. If a tenant needs a fix in their apartment then she calls the superintendents. She goes see potential new tenants and makes them sign a lease. She acts as a representative of the landlord in all documents even in court. She can apply with the companys lawyer to start an eviction process. She currently has a car that the landlord has given her to move between the 5 office buildings. She and the senior superintendent are the right hand of the landlord.
It's 9 hours from Saturday to Wednesday. Days off are Thursday and Friday. Because people feel paying their rents on weekends and asking for fixes also.

Dear, CPA vs CFA, which one is more valuable?

    My experience:
Internship with Pwc in their advisory practice (Acct major) in LA office - 30.25/hr.
Full time offer- 68000 with signing bonus of 3000. I’m currently A3 and my current salary stands at 80000. Salary wise, industry/private will pay more than public to a recent grad, but career progression wise, public will offer faster promotion and higher salary raises. If you’re willing to work a few busy seasons at public, the opportunities that present themselves after public accounting are countless.

OK, I'm not going to dispute your data in regards to the salaries because that's what you and people you know experienced but I would like to provide my experience as well. I am a Military Veteran and realized I needed an education and in 2006 I received an Associates degree in Accounting from a Junior College in CA. I am originally from Texas and I used my military education benefits to go back to school and get my Bachelors in Business. Unfortunately, I went to University of Phoenix and graduated in 2009. I loved it but certain employers don't. After I graduated, I took additional accounting courses at a traditional school (UH) here in Houston, TX. It took me a while to make more than $50K. It wasn't until 2012 or so, three years after I graduated. I am now 43 years old with no additional education or designations. I have twelve years of experience from my Associates/nine years from my Bachelors and I make $65K as a Senior Accountant. This is the most I have ever made. Do you see a problem with that? Do you think it's my degree or maybe my military background? All I know is I should be at 100K by now but I don't know what to do.

There are many factors that affect salary such as location, education, tenure, certifications, etc. In my experience most senior accounts I know make $80,000+. However, we are only 30 minutes or so away from Chicago so that tends to increase salaries. If I was in your situation I would speak to my employer and see what I needed to do in order to get promoted. Many people decide to get a masters or the CPA designation in order to move up but knowing specifically what your employer is looking for is also key. Again, this is just what I would do.

Thank you for the feedback. I see the salaries and it's worth the discussion but I am also ready to move on if I don't here something good. My Supervisor is the Accounting Manager and sh is only at $70K. She has an MBA but her Bachelor's and Master's are both from Phoenix. The CFO has an MBA from AIU Online but his salary is over 4X what mine is with bonuses. Hopefully your advise works but more than likely, I will be on to the next one. Thanks

M S In most states, most seniors make $60k to $85k. Alnost none make 100k. $70k for a manager is pretty low. Average is about $80k to 120k.
