Excellent tutorial - I did mine last year and this is exactly how it should be done!

just clamp the flexi hose when u take the caliper off with a clamp tool or a old pair of vice grips, or get a pice of wood 28 inches long and press in the brake pedal and jam the other end against the drivers seat this will hold the brake pedal in , so the fluid does not leak out. old indian trick. good luck.

In the side of the piston in the groove where the rubber seal seats there is a hole that needs to be clean. I would recommend you to taker apart and clean the inside of the piston. It is not too hard you have to memorize how everything goes together. And you have to clean all the parts. After assembling all the brake system. you have to pull the handbrake leaver 10 or more times till the handbrake self adjusts.

@spelunkerd OK unusual.i would guess you would have to pump the brake pedal until theres a solid brake first, then the hand brake will adjust.

The last time I did one of these, it seemed that the piston had to 'catch' on the threads before it would adjust with rotation. The whole threaded assembly inside the piston would rotate without threading, independent from rotation of the outer piston. It was frustrating, and I was cursing VW. After it was on, the emergency brake would not auto adjust until I pressed the piston out far enough for the shoes to make contact with the rotor. Eventually it worked fine, but I cursed VW.

do you have to take the brake line off or can you leave caliper connected to take piston out?

this is a good tutorial. i have just done this to my golf. ive got a problem though ever since doing this i have spongy breaks, they do work but the first 2 inches on my pedal are spongy before it goes hard. i have bled the system there are no air bubbles and no leaks. any suggestions?

Good video Liam as usual , ive been watching your videos mainly on changing camshaft belts on Tdi engines ,
I have a quick question for you i have a VW golf MK4 1.4 petrol engine , it has only 117 k miles on the clock as we have it from new , lately when i got to start it in the morning it wont start , even though i let the eletric fuel pump in the fuel tank to preasureise the fuel system, it still wont fire so i turn the ignition key off and retry starting the engine ,again giving the fuel pump time to pressurise the fuel system ,and this can take a third attempt ,then it starts up , also when the engine has started up and warms up its fine then and will start easily , what would you think she is doing as its a grand car besides she is 1998 and has the AHW engine in it ,theres no rush with returning a message its just im not sure is it fuel fault or an ignition fault see what you think
all the best liam for now from john noonan

you will have to scan computer for codes first, a possible thermo switch faulty.

When you wind back the piston, do the piston notches have to be left in a certain position, for the handbrake to work properly? I think they have to be left in a certain position?

when you wind back the piston, with hand brake cable fully off or disconeted from caliper. wind piston forward until u have a 1mm gap between caliper and brake pads, slide caliper off and on, measure 1 mm, pump brake up, then fit hand brake cable.

great video but do you have to do anything to the brake fluid reservoir before taking the caliper off (will it leak everywhere if i just take it off 1st thing?)
    thanks
