It's called sawdust pie because during the depression days one of the ingredients was actually sawdust. Sawdust was used as a filler and often times it was made by people who lived very rural and harvested their own nuts from the woods around them, plus they had yard chickens that provided the eggs. They didn't use coconut very often since that wasn't a staple in most kitchens. I'm up there in yrs now but I remember hearing folks talk about that pie. Sugar was rationed or non existent for poor people but they could use their own homemade cane syrup, maple syrup or honey from wild bees. My mom grew up during the depression on the family farm and even after the country was coming out of it you could only find coffee with chicory . They had to be creative cooks to feed their families when there were no huge grocery stores with anything your taste buds desired.
It's like grass bread. In England during WWII the British used to feed German prisoners bread made of finely chopped grass, finely chopped nuts if any could be found, etc. It was recreated on The Farm Series The Edwardian Farm, and it came out a very dense, heavy loaf of 'bread'. But it kept everyone alive, and they said it was tasty and edible. Probably tasted like greens.

That might be something I can do with all the extra egg whites when I make pies for the holidays. My bunch isn't fond of meringue. And I'll be using black walnuts. I crack hundreds of pounds every year.
Just found your site and have to say sure enjoyed our first visit. Sawdust pie, can see where that name came from, but really does look good and best if all, very easy. Basic ingredients and we all probably have in our pantries or freezer. Thanks for sharing.
I can’t wait to try this. It looks so ooey-gooey wonderful inside when you served it up. I just knew it was going to be more dry. These are basically the same ingredients used for “magic cookie bars” so I know the flavors work really well together.
I would love this. I subscribed to your channel because of your name and this country pie. I don’t think I’ll be disappointed. I’m very patriotic myself. Have a blessed evening. 🙏🏻
I make squares similar to your filling. Original receipe was for a Graham cracker crumb crust and though it was good, to me it tasted almost exclusively of Graham crackers so I substituted vanilla cookies for the crust, use fresh coconut blitzed in the food processor, exclude nuts and substitute chopped maraschino or glacé cherries and orange rind. Top with a thin orange icing. People seemed to like it. Every couple decades I find a receipe I had for something called “dream whip squares”. It was a popular wedding confection back in the 50s when I was a child. Had nothing to do with fake whipped cream from the freezer section and contained a can of fruit cocktail, maraschino cherries, and coconut topped with icing made from the cherry syrup. I’m game to make the pie and will likely use a coconut and probably not the nuts of any variety but perhaps dried orange bits.
I love folks with creativity in the kitchen!!! That sounds delicious and let me know how it turns out. And I remember making a fruit salad with dream whip and marshmallows. And like you said Dream Whip didn't come out of the freezer. It was in a box. I need to make some! Thank you for your input and look forward to hearing more from you!

That pie looks absolutely delicious. After having seen your water pie video, I was expecting a pie with real sawdust in the filling! There’s a reason for me thinking that. I would try it exactly like you did first - then I would probably try to mix it with a Japanese Fruit Pie (just google that) and make two pies out of the mixture - just think they might meld well together. Japanese Fruit Pie has a small amount of apple cider vinegar in it - and it really reacts nicely with the sugar - I would put double the vinegar for the two pies to get the full effect. Then, of course, I might decide to just go back to the original - who knows??
I am headed to the kitchen to see if I can find all the ingredients to make this today. If not, oh well. I was planning a trip to the grocery store anyways. My husband loved coconut cream pie. I think he might like this too. It is definitely worth a try.

Thank you for your input and look forward to hearing more from you!

looks yummy. My hubby doesn't like nuts are anything chunky in his food either. I have to puree the onions and peppers when I make spaghetti sauce, etc. I long for big chunks of walnut in my chocolate chip cookies. That pie looks absolutely delicious. After having seen your water pie video, I was expecting a pie with real sawdust in the filling! There’s a reason for me thinking that. My father told me that during WWII, there was a small sweets factory where he lived that replaced the usual chopped nuts or roasted coconut in a popular chocolate bar with actual sawdust due to supply shortages. That company no longer exists but the story is true. BTW, I just subscribed to your channel. ❤

@@allycbythesea7937 You can! If you have a recipe calling for yolks, you can definitely freeze the leftover whites. Thank you for your question! ❤️
@@mountainpatriothomestead thank you. I asked because I don’t like the white on a fried egg so generally pour it down the skin and I know it’s a waste. I will freeze them now for meramgurs or some such

if you call it 'cellulose' it's legal....see parmesan cheese in those shaker cans, they still use it.
😂😂
I snorted after reading this comment 😂
Taco bell probably uses oatmeal in their meat mixture, Like taco villa here in texas.I know this bc family members worked there ,and some places use potatoes in their mixtures.
I like black walnuts too. I bet you'd like chicken fat cookies with black walnuts in them. They're so good.
You're going to think I'm goofy, but I didn't even know that was a thing until I just looked it up! That's amazing and definitely something I'll give a try. Thank you for sharing! ❤
Oohhh... That sounds AMAZING! Thank you for sharing and now I have to try! 🤗❤️
I am headed to the kitchen to see if I can find all the ingredients to make this today. If not, oh well. I was planning a trip to the grocery store anyways. My husband loved coconut cream pie. I think he might like this too. It is definitely worth a try.

❤❤ This looks DEVASTATINGLY YUMMY!!! It still looks like cookie dough (to me..) on your plate! And there isn't a THING wrong with that! I was wanting SO BADLY to see some butter dropped onto it, or something, but wonder if the buttery flavor was the blend of sugar and coconut??
I'm thinking raisins or craisins would be yummy, especially if they have soaked a few hours in Captain Morgan 😮😊 Also, if it seems dry to someone, I would bet making a custard cream (with those yolks..) would be incredible spooned over it. You are KILLING ME!!❤
@@WyomingWindy 😄 It is definitely delicious! And it isn't dry, but all your suggestions sound fantastic, too! You mentioned raisins or craisins, and that made me think of dates, which I love. The best part about these types of recipes is being able to play with them and make them your own.
