There are very few artists who can take an unassuming raga and give it a magical spin of their own - Venkatesh Kumar does just that in this rendition of Raag Durga, a pentatonic scale consisting of only pure notes.
This afternoon raga thrives on the simplicity of its treatment - there is no complexity in its phrases and hardly any characteristic attached that may be termed as distinctive. Kumar’s performance captures this very essence as he builds the raga with straightforward, unpretentious phrases.
His tonal richness and timbre, especially in the upper octave is reflective of grace and the years of dedicated practice that he has put behind his music. It is one of the best versions of Durga that you will find anywhere.
Satyajit Talwalkar (tabla), Murad Ali Khan (sarangi) and Tofail Ahmed (harmonium) accompany him, adding a wonderful touch to the performance bringing in each individual element into the raag with their instruments in the much-needed way.

Raag Durga derives from the Bilawal that and is pentatonic in its ascent and descent. It omits Ga (3rd) and Ni (7th). The dominant and sub-dominant notes are Pa (5th) and Sa (1st) respectively and the notes are pure.
Named after goddess Durga, this raga has a very straight, forceful and impressive chalan (gait). There are two variants of this raga: one belongs to Bilawal scale, the other belongs to the parent scale of Khamaj. The latter is almost extinct now.
This raga is identical to a Carnatic raga Shuddha Saveri; But as usual, its chalan (melodic phraseology or gait) is different in different with almost staccato notes at play. Its forceful ascending movements very naturally focus on the mid-octave region and upper half of the octave. This raga unfolds it beauty in the medium tempo.

Beautiful rendition as usual from Pandit Venkatesh Kumar. Durga has always been one of his signatures. All the accompanying artists are in impeccable synchronisation with the vocalist.
Moreover those expressions from Pt. Satyajit Talwalkar and Ustad Murad Ali at 1:10 and 1:21 respectively, brought an instant smile to my face. Not to mention those sargams and fast taans near the end, speechless.

Good to see upgraded show with good Neumann and Schoeps mic. Tabla could benefit more with single mic. Lows in tabla is missing a bit. otherwise all instruments and vocal sounding great.
