Edit: The change of schedule sounds great! i hope it works it does seem better planned out then before. So being honest as a student i would rather change classrooms rather than the teacher switching rooms. it gives me a break and time to get up move around and not be in the same room for a very long time. I understand its probably easier for you teachers to move but i always preferred to actually move myself...
Our students do change classes throughout the day... from homeroom to cultural arts, back to homeroom, to block 1, to lunch, to block 2, to recess, back to block 2, back to homeroom, and then to their dismissal room. Switching classes for science and social studies was just an extra transition that was not needed. First of all, we only have 40 minutes for science/social studies. We were wasting 5 minutes getting settled at the beginning and then 5 minutes switching at the end. Plus, students would forget materials and waste time going back (plus interrupting that class) to get them. It was also disruptive to nearby classes that were in the middle of instruction when our students were changing classes. Our students also had to keep track of which room to go to since we switch weekly and it was difficult for them to remember. It is better for our students if the teachers switch classes instead of them.
This may be a crazy request, I am an education major and would love to see a video of you teaching your students. I know its hard if you move around and making sure the student's faces are not in the video, but I would just love to see you teach!
I just wanted to say that I've truly tried wrapping my mind around how to implement Flexible Seating into my 4th grade classroom and until you showed your plan, I was at a loss. But the progression of high to low seating just makes sense. THANK YOU for being willing to share these ideas. I KNOW this is something classes in my future will really benefit from. I'm going to start running these ideas by my admin. :)
Thank you so much Becky! I agree... I wasn't sure how it would work for me either until my administration gave us the "okay" to get rid of some desks. Then the idea of having the tiered seating popped into my mind and I was like "yessss!" I can't wait to see this fully implemented in my classroom and I hope you can do the same! Best of luck to you!
I just watched about 8 minutes of your today's video but I just wanted to say that YOU ROCK GIRL !! Thank you for all the positive energy you give me/us every week. First time ever I write a comment on a youtube video ... Hope it will reach you. With Love.
As usual I love your videos! I thought I would let you know a little about myself. I am forty-four years old and finally in college to become a teacher! I have wanted to be a teacher my whole life:) I learn so much from you and I appreciate you! I am a little worried about how long I will have to stay after school because you stay late many times! Thanks again for your help:) Jen Morse
Hi! I just wanted to let you know that you are a great inspiration to me. I'm still in highschool, but I have plans of becoming a teacher. You certainly set the bar high for the ways I want to teach. You're so considerate and passionate; I hope someday I can be as loving to my students as you are. You also remind me to stay positive and be the best me I can be. So thank you for being a wonderful teacher, a wonderful role model, and a wonderful person.
In elementary school, we had bouncy bands on the bottom of all of our chairs k-4th funded through a grant. They just stretch around the front two legs of chairs and kids can move their feet and fidget throughout the day. They were great and helped so much with concentration. And for the kids who didn't like them, they could just ignore them.
Flexible seating plan looks awesome!! Just a warning with the risers for the tall table though, I’ve had them before and it can put a strain on the middle of the table if the table is too long. I’ve had a table crack and risers brake!
I had to write my name on all my tables in sharpie underneath and on top I placed a label in the corner. This way when my tables were borrowed they always made it back to my room.
You’ve inspired me to think about flexible seating for my students! My group of kids this year is very active and are always moving so this may be an option for me as well!
The school I just completed my internship at has full flexible seating in all classrooms, no desks at all! Lessons are taught at the carpet but when they are working independently they get to choose where to sit in the classroom. My CT had a large sofa in the back of the room but also had a few different tables and types of seats (stools, bean bags, actual chairs, etc.). Students were responsible for choosing the spot they felt they could focus best in, and if it didn't work out CT had them move to a new spot. It worked really well for her energetic second graders! I'm excited to hear how flexible seating works in your classroom!
+Pocketful of Primary Michelle , Since you are Today's Most Beautiful Teacher in the World and it is rainy outside of My House you are playing the role of My Sunshine today so please keep up with wearing those beautiful outfits of yours . With that said , Faith is the substance of all things hoped for and I have no doubt that you will find some people to give to Your Project . I believe in you . You are doing this for your students and people feel the love coming from your heart . You've got this !! - Dwight
Lol having completed all my primary and secondary education I can say that I’d be so annoyed by flexible seating. But it’s cool that teachers like you do make it available to students, you’re aware that each one can learn differently and that I find amazing
You sound very positive and content, even through the exhaustion and all the craziness of teaching, I think you’re supposed to be where you’re at! Just a little encouragement:)
Another great vid, thank you so much 👏 Would you consider including clips of your gym workouts sometimes too? And even your girls on the run coaching? I know I for one would be interested!
Your doorbell ( 10:45 ), do you use that as an attention getter to bring the class back together? I've been trying to find an idea that I like or feel comfortable enough bringing into a middle school classroom. I was thinking of a bellhop/hotel type bell, but if I'm able to wear a buzzer and walk around the room with it, that's a great idea! Also, the kids won't be messing with it!
Hello Michelle, I just wished to say I am not a teacher, but you continue to make my day. I love all of your original ideas, and fun activities! Thank you for always being inspiring and happy holidays!!! Warmly, Sarah Ryan
I wonder if students truly need flexible seating. I admire your drive and im excited to see you jump into it, I just hope it does not cause you more stress and more work than you already have now. I think students need a happy and well rested teacher. You are the best!
I know my group of students and yes, it is something they need to be successful. This is also something we have discussed with our administration (who have known these students since Kindergarten) and they completely agree. I will always do what is best for my students, even if it adds some temporary stress.
I really like your tiered idea. I may have to do that with my tables. You are my favourite teacher to follow. I tell my students about you all the time and have used a lot of your strategies. Hugs from Saskatchewan, Canada!
Love you, and your channel, and I love how you always keep a positive attitude!!!!!!! You are such a great teacher and person- excited to see the new seating and hoping that it works for you and your students! Xo-Iris
I think such an important thing to learn from this vlog is that you can take a bad day putting you into a bad mental state into into this amazing and new opportunity for you and your students. Can’t wait to see this project fulfilled!
My math teacher has flexible seating for the rest of the year and she bring in and old dining room set that she said she was trying to get rid of and she brought it here but for that you can only it there five times a quarter it’s a good idea!
I was a grad school intern at a school all last year and things were stolen from me every single day. I had to teach in the PTA room and those mothers hated me for it and between that and the lack of respect with stealing teachers it was a horrible year. Glad that school paid for my Master’s Degree but it was still a hellish year
I implemented flexible seating into my classroom a few years ago after visiting a school that had flexible seating in every classroom. I spent a lot of time researching, planning and shopping for all the different options. I had my husband cut PVC pipe to slip onto the legs of the tables to make two tables higher. At those tables, I used grey IKEA bar stools with backs. I also had bean bags, rockers, grey and yellow backwards chairs from IKEA, regular desks and chairs, wobble chairs and crate seats. I went off work in October 2017 on medical leave because I needed surgery. I broke my shoulder on a class skating fieldtrip (and did a lot of damage to my arm and elbow and hand- torn ligaments and nerve damage.) I just recently returned to work on Dec. 3rd 2018 after more than a year off work. All my flexible seating was dispersed around the school into different classrooms. All I have left are my two wobble chairs. Some stuff was broken during my absence, some stuff was lost- how? I don't know!, and other stuff was "borrowed" and still has not been returned. Much of what I had was bought with my own $, or bought specifically for me by my old principal after the school visit I talked about earlier. (We do not have Donor's Choose projects here in Canada.) Teachers seem to have claimed my stuff as theirs in my absence. So I totally understand how you feel when your table was taken. Coming back, after such a long absence, has been very difficult physically and emotionally and I'm trying very hard to stay positive. It's like starting over again... But let me tell you, flexible seating was awesome. I will, one day, go back to it. Good luck setting up your classroom. I hope you and your students enjoy it too!
Hi Michelle The break in between will be good for them mentally. Class, break, and class study shows they do better concentrating and performing. Then sitting long time with no breaks. Change going be good for you and the student. Having no moving in 2 hours is going be hard to learn in my opinion. The flexible seating good alternative if you can’t have 15 min of recess every hour.
One of my favorite furniture piece that my church has in the new building which opened in 2016 called The Living Room and in some of these life groups room, they have those Buoy Stools by Turnstone where you can spin, wobble and change the height! These kids and teenagers loves those stools to death!
I implemented full flexible seating this year for the first time. Last year as a first year teacher it wasn’t something I was willing to take on. This year I went for it. Tips I have: 1) set first expectations. 2) give one reminder and then make them move back to a desk/table 3) keep your options simple. Seriously most kids love to just sit on the floor. 4) realize different groups of kids will handle it differently. My section 2 class was successful a lot quicker than my section 1. Actually very few kids even have access to certain flexible seating options in my section 1 class but they know the expectations to earn it back. I think you will love it and so will your kids!!
I love the idea of flexible seating. It’s a little difficult at the Secondary level because of our classrooms being needed for testing. But if I’m at least able to add some flexible options, some options are better than none!
Hello Michelle I been Watching you started Your channel you’re my favorite TH-cam or when I grow up I wanna be a teacher just like you I hope you’re having a great school year so far from Caroline
when i did Girls on the run last year my principle helped coach on the day of the 5k fall we had glitter names on the back of our shirts spring we had blue and green bows with glittery names on our shirts 💙💙💚💚
I like the idea of flexible seating in the classroom. For a new teacher who is looking into it, how would you suggest implementing it. Would you start small like the small table that was in your library, or would you do something bigger like what you and your team teacher are moving to? If you did whole class like what you are moving to, how would you introduce it, especially at the beginning of the year? I think one of my worries, not teaching quite yet, is that there will be fighting over who gets what type of seat, and if that seat doesn't work out, then I don't have other options for them... I will totally look into your donor's choose and consider giving :)
That is unfortunate but if we as a community can rally together maybe we can make it happen. I have to say thank you for looking at my comment. I hope to be a special ed teacher in the future and have been watching your videos for a while. Among other factors you have helped me see this as a fulfilling and possible career
How do you keep kids from fighting over a certain type of seating or kids who are at the front of the line coming into the classroom always being able to have first pick?
I will start by surveying my students to see which options they think will work well for them. I will assign them a seat and over time they will be able to choose for themselves. It is all about setting expectations up front!
While you are waiting for your funding to come through, try having a game of simon says for three minutes between lessons, as you know the expanding of pent up energy works wonders to help focus.
I do something similar! I play "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" but I call change it up... for example: head, shoulders, knees, nose, head shoulders, nose, toes, head, shoulders, toes, nose, etc. This helps them get out their energy for a few shoulder seconds or minutes but that quickly disappears during a 2 hour block of time.
It’s such a strange schedule here elementary school. Ours here have homeroom then straight into block one(they stay in the same place) then 15 minuet recess, block 2, lunch (25 minuets) and a 35 minuet recess, block 3 then another 15 minuet recess, and finally block 4 then dismissal.
Hi Zoe Those breaks in between your blocks are going be good for you mentally. If you did not have those break. Then you be sitting a long time and not be attentive has well. Many studies suggests breaks are good to refuel the brain to learn better.
I'm in eight grade and at my school the lessons consist of 55 minutes and then after the lesson is over, the teacher leaves, we (the students) go to the back of the class, to our lockers, get our jazz and get back to our desks. Boom, other teacher walks in! 😂 P.S today is my first exam. Pray for me and my brother, we need it, trust me....
I've been wanting to ask you this for a while, but where do you get your knee-length skirts? Is it somewhere online? I live in The Netherlands and it's hard to find those here... They look so good on you!
My histroy teacher used to let me sit on the floor. Which helped me to pay attention because I have really bad ADHD. Im just letting you know pluto needs distilled water
Wow I love your videos so much you inspired me to higher up my grades in school and hopefully being a teacher! :) You're really an inspriring person I would love to have you as my teacher.I would love to donate but sadly I can't when I get money I would.
Michelle, I know that you are SUPER busy, but I was wondering how you knew that you wanted to be a teacher... I’m 99% sure (I think!) that I want to be a teacher, but I just wanted to know about you. Thank you so much! You’re amazing! P.S. There was a booth that I saw that was from Maryland and I thought of you haha! The Cheeto was funny as well!
Wait wait wait… What do you use the doorbell thing for? Is that something your school does or is it something that just you do? Can you explain a little more? Thanks!
Edit: The change of schedule sounds great! i hope it works it does seem better planned out then before.

I totally agree. I think it also helps with students associating a classroom with certain classes

Super awesome energy, thats my favorite part of these videos too!
I don't take it as a "Gimme, gimme!!". It sounds like a "I wish I could afford this for my students, but I need help." Teachers are way underpaid!!
Yes! That is exactly how I was hoping it would be taken because that is exactly the reality! Thank you so much for realizing that!

I implemented flexible seating into my classroom a few years ago after visiting a school that had flexible seating in every classroom. I spent a lot of time researching, planning and shopping for all the different options. I had my husband cut PVC pipe to slip onto the legs of the tables to make two tables higher. Your hair and it’s length is so gorgeous and literally goals!! I'd love to see a haircare routine! 💕😊
Thank you so much Addy! I appreciate it! I honestly don't do too much with my hair but I could definitely do a video on it! Thanks!

Hi Michelle
The break in between will be good for them mentally. Class, break, and class study shows they do better concentrating and performing. Then sitting long time with no breaks. Change going be good for you and the student. Having no moving in 2 hours is going be hard to learn in my opinion. The flexible seating good alternative if you can’t have 15 min of recess every hour.

During this season of extra stress, self-care is so important. Good job of taking care of your greatest asset... yourself. Now go rock the world.
Thanks for the shout out at the top of the show, and for being such an inspiring teacher! Supported your Donors Choose!

I implemented full flexible seating this year for the first time. Last year as a first year teacher it wasn’t something I was willing to take on. This year I went for it. Tips I have:
1) set first expectations.
2) give one reminder and then make them move back to a desk/table
3) keep your options simple. Seriously most kids love to just sit on the floor.
4) realize different groups of kids will handle it differently.
My section 2 class was successful a lot quicker than my section 1. Actually very few kids even have access to certain flexible seating options in my section 1 class but they know the expectations to earn it back.

Oh yes, I already know all of these! Since I have implemented some flexible seating before, I know all about expectations! Thanks!
Sorry I made some assumptions there! Looking forward to hearing how it goes. My class is a high movement class too and it’s been super helpful!
I love the idea of flexible seating. It’s a little difficult at the Secondary level because of our classrooms being needed for testing. But if I’m at least able to add some flexible options, some options are better than none!
I just saw a meme "An actual picture of a classroom teacher picking up their class from P.E." and it has a sloth crawling down the hall.
THE CHEETO 😂 😂
I love your attitude and your glasses😋
When Michelle said “I’m not on my A game, I’m more on my C minus game” I felt that. Two weeks until Christmas break!
Fun fact in Brazil the students stay all day at the same class and teachers come and go in intervals of 50min.

Those bed risers that ur talking about can actually be purchased at walmart for about 5 or 6 bucks...
Venus flytraps actually lose heads and grow new ones! Pluto may not be lost!
Teachers don’t get paid enough but there really important because we wouldn’t be able to do really anything they teach us everything
Great vlog! Thanks Michelle! 💖

My 5th grade teacher would always let ussit on the windowsill/vent or on the floor while we were doing collaborative work.
How do you decide who gets to sit where with the various seating type options?
Wow. I eat at 12:55. I hate it. I always get hungry a couple hours before lunch.
Can you do more vlogs?? There my favourite to watch
I was wondering how the flexible seating works (or changes) in your class during state testing.
Yes you are good for.
Hi Zoe
Those breaks in between your blocks are going be good for you mentally. If you did not have those break. Then you be sitting a long time and not be attentive has well. Many studies suggests breaks are good to refuel the brain to learn better.
Wow! That's a lot of recess time... I'm jealous! Our students only get 20 minutes of recess total during the day.
Nice video!!! Can you please film a vid seeing the flexibale seating? I wish I could be in your class.
@Cheyenne Moore
thx!!!
What camera do you use to film your videos?
I'm in eight grade and at my school the lessons consist of 55 minutes and then after the lesson is over, the teacher leaves, we (the students) go to the back of the class, to our lockers, get our jazz and get back to our desks. Boom, other teacher walks in! 😂 P.S today is my first exam. Pray for me and my brother, we need it, trust me....
The cheeto part had me cracking up lol 😂
i have been looking for glasses like yours where did you get them !?
My glasses are from Eye Buy Direct!
I can't donate , but i have gladly turned off ad blocker for your channel !
I've been wanting to ask you this for a while, but where do you get your knee-length skirts? Is it somewhere online? I live in The Netherlands and it's hard to find those here... They look so good on you!
They are all from Amazon! I bought the same skirt in many different colors. Here is my affiliate link:

your hair is so pretty! what do you do to it?
You should go back to your weekly teacher 3!! Make sure your planning for your self-care! 😁
Make a couple signs and put them on the table and desk and have it say like do not move or take it's there for a reason.
Does your school use Kagan? This is cooperative learning and has movement and a lot of student accountability!
My histroy teacher used to let me sit on the floor. Which helped me to pay attention because I have really bad ADHD.
Im just letting you know pluto needs distilled water
What do you use the doorbell for? I’m seriously wondering
Probably getting their attention.
Would you make a video about dealing with defiant students? I have trouble with that a lot
Can you make a video on how to make your worksheets and google slides

Michelle,
I know that you are SUPER busy, but I was wondering how you knew that you wanted to be a teacher... I’m 99% sure (I think!) that I want to be a teacher, but I just wanted to know about you. Thank you so much! You’re amazing!
P.S. There was a booth that I saw that was from Maryland and I thought of you haha! The Cheeto was funny as well!
She explains it all in the interview she linked in the description!
The funeral for Pluto is so sweet! My plants never last that could be a great lesson! Great ideas 😊💕
Wait wait wait… What do you use the doorbell thing for? Is that something your school does or is it something that just you do? Can you explain a little more? Thanks!
Where did you get your doorbell holder? I keep mine in my pocket but I keep butt dialing it in the middle of class! 😆
Yay its here I can't wait to watch it 😃😃😃😃😃
