• In 1987, Monta and Momoko were transferred from Spain to Japan. (age 1 or 3?)
They were kept at Aritake Chojuten Co. Ltd, the animal dealer until they moved to Chiba Zoo in 1993.
• In March 1993, he and Momoko were transferred to Chiba Zoological Park.
NB: The credibility of his birth info is uncertain.
Monta and Momoko grew up together. They were infants when they arrived in Japan. However, due to the allegation of illegal trade, they spent a few years at the animal dealer's place until the allegation was cleared. He desperately needs a companion to live as his kind. He's been living alone most of his adult life. From 2009 until 2010, the zoo tried pairing up Monta and Rola several times. It didn't go well. Since then, he has been all alone. His abnormal behavior of plucking hair has been greatly reduced since the change of his keeper. I hope the zoo will not change the keeper in a short period of time.

Sire: Gonta | Dam: Rirako
Rearing: Hand-reared
• In Sept 1977, Rola was born and was being hand reared in a vet house. No trial to return her to Rirako. But her case gave a lesson for zoos and keepers in Japan that a gorilla should be raised by its own kind.
• In Nov 1980, she was transferred to Tobu Zoo
Basically she was living alone but her keeper used to play with her.
• In Oct 1993, she was transferred to Ueno Zoo, and lived with her mother, Rirako, and other gorillas.
• In Dec 2008, she and Kenta were transferred to Chiba Zoo and lived with him until he passed away in 2016.
Rola has difficulty in communicating with other gorillas. Especially when she is put with a silverback, she becomes ill except with an individual like Kenta who had no interest in gorillas. She loves sunbathing. She occasionally exhibits abnormal behaviors such as coprophagy, licking urine, regurgitation and reingestion. Rola always searches for earthworms as her companions. But they have a short life-span, plus they disappear in cold weather. I hope the zoo will consider the option of Rola living with other small animals. It may help solve her abnormal behaviors and loneliness. It seems her R/R has been greatly reduced since the change of her keeper.

The video was filmed right after the zoo opened in October 2023 at Chiba Zoological Park, Japan. Rola and Monta are still in their indoor exhibits. They are roaming around to check if their doors are open yet. Rola licks her own urine several times, but she does not exhibit R/R (regurgitation and reingestion). I see some food still remaining in her rooms, which probably helps her prevent doing R/R. Both of them seem to be rather calm. They were able to get outside at around 9:50 a.m. The first thing Monta does once he gets outside is to sit near the visiting area while Rola goes and gets her favorite food, i.e., a tomato. Both often check the keeper's area, expecting to receive extra treats. Gigio, the neighboring chimpanzee, enjoys her breakfast in the tower while watching Monta.

You think they would at least put a nice layer of straw down so they have a soft place to lay down.
I have suggested that the zoo could kindly provide Rola and Monta with adequate bedding materials. I haven't received a reply in regard to this matter. And their indoor rooms are now closed to the public. So there is no way to check how the zoo has improved their indoor environments. When I go visit the zoo next time, I will ensure to ask about this matter again in writing. Thank you for caring!

It has been awhile since i saw these two beauties, it left me feeling alot of sadness & hopelessness. I can only wonder what they must be feeling. Rola is looking a little thin around the middle. Monta is still as gorgeous as ever. I see the empty ness in his eyes. It's the same thing day after day.😢

I'm not sure if you can see the zoo's recent post on X of Rola whistling. I think Rola favors the keeper who shoots this footage.🤭

@@sonjavandam1306 I totally agree with you mate. I feel the same with the Momotaro’s. Seeing them in that small space actually makes me feel claustrophobic! I’ve cut down my viewing these last couple of months.😕🥀
They are in a sad situation and I don’t see anything changing. From my understanding standing isn’t this the zoo that owns Gentaro? If so then if he is brought here I fear he will completely shut down. No gorilla deserves complete isolation from other gorillas for years. 😢
Hi Karen. This video was filmed in last October. I hope things have changed since then. Yes. This zoo owns Gentaro, and I totally get your fear. I am also concerned if any young gorillas are transferred to this zoo in the current living environment, they will definitely become mentally affected. No gorillas deserve living alone. Hi Karin! I saw a video where a Chimp has a pet pig! So cute seeing the little piglet following his friend around and sleeping at his feet. I thought of Rola and what companion would be good for her. I think a pig would bother her with the squealing and she can’t carry it on her back😅but probably a kitten?
Thank you MySkinnydip for your informative comment. I always thought chimps wouldn’t be compatible for mixed species exhibits. But it seems there are some exceptions. I’m not sure if Rola would love a pig but certainly a companion will make her living environment much more fun. I think of a cat or a tortoise may work for her.
@@karintogorillas I wish Rola could’ve been a surrogate. We had our baby boy today at Woodland park zoo but first time mama Akenji has rejected him.☹️ He will be hand reared like Sumomo unless a surrogate can be found.🙏🏽
Congratulations on the beautiful arrival of the new-born baby at Woodland Park Zoo.🎉 But it's unfortunate that Akenji has rejected the baby. Another case like Sumomo and Annie is sad to hear. I hope the zoo cooperates with other organizations to find a surrogate mom as soon as possible. They still don’t have names after all this time🥲People are getting ruthless in the comment section. It’s either one mama isn’t taking care of her child well enough or the other mama’s child is too skinny because she isn’t feeding it!🤦🏽♀️The two moms are Effie and Mjukuu. In my opinion,Effie has been doing a good job so far. She hasn’t raised any of her other children. Mjukuu has raised one of Effie’s children in the past and is doing great job with her little one. We also don’t know about the sex of either child. I think they both are boys. The zoo needs to watch the videographer videos sometimes. You guys get the best footage!😄👍
Eu não consigo assistir os vídeos do Monta e da Rola sem chorar, porque eu me sinto frustrada, os dois então sozinhos há muoto tempo, isolados, dói, eu amo os gorilas, é quero sinceramente saber se tem alguma atitude que possa pelo menos melhorar a vida dos dois, porque acho tudo isso muito perverso, o Zoo de Chiba não forneceu nada para que eles possam deitar com mais conforto, até a alimentação parece pobre, isso é um atraso, São administradores retrógrados, vou ficar muito triste se Gentaro for para esse Zoo, Mokolo tem uma tropa, mas não querem dar essa chance para o Monta e a Rola, estou desabafando, o vídeo mexe com as emoções, empatia, é por isso que quanto mais eu conheço o ser humano, mais eu amo os animais.
