i used to watch moto for ages.. between 1994 and 2003 (when i moved).. on Eurosport. Everything, including qualifyting and races. Loved every bit of IT. Vale was a part of it. Sensational.

@@chamindujanith6337 boy Valentino won back to back races and back to back championships on different manufacturers, no one has achieved that in the history of MotoGP.
Marc has won all his championships on Honda. Valentino left Honda when he was winning pretty much every race, if he would have stayed with Honda then he would have won easy 15 titles.
Looking at Marc's physical condition, it is highly unlikely he will be able to fight with young guys of today.
Valentino is special as he didn't have to crash or hit other riders to win like Marc did in the past. Marc is all about win it or bin it, Marc's own riding style broke him.

Hard to miss the fact that most of the moments, 8 of 10 to be precise, were in the first half of his career, when he redefined what it meant to be a motor racing superstar achieving demigod status and amassing race wins and championships for fun. The last two moments were purely for the nostalgia associated with the last hurrah of a great champion. It would have been a near perfect career had he retired before leaving Yamaha for Ducati.
I wish him all the best for his endeavors with VR46 and his car racing career.

I have been seeing Rossi race since Brno 1996.
Somewhere down the line, just after his Ducati years, I started thinking like what you just said. But then, seeing his '14 '15 & '16 seasons it reminded me of what I had lost sight of. He is the last of the golden 90s era of racers. Race for the fun of it, enjoy yourself and push the limits every time.
How his career/percentile would have looked if he retired at that/this point in his career is for people more interested in the statistics and not the history/legend around the sport.
He raced because he just loved it, and wanted to see where his limits were and how much he could push.
I am shedding a tear here, not only because he has retired, but he was truly the last of his kind ( the golden 90s era of racers)
@nonsono io No way. There's nothing wrong in being 2nd best from the 14-16 period to an otherworldly Marc Marquez and one of the smoothest riders ever in Jorge Lorenzo.

After all, I hoped that the transition from Yamaha to Ducati would have the same result as the transition from Honda to Yamaha! The Yamaha was practically reborn with Vale, but perhaps changing the Ducati was an even greater challenge than him! But I admire his courage to undertake new challenges that may have cost him the conquest of other titles!

Dang I wish Rossi didn’t retire this past season so he could go for the all time record of most wins which he only needed 8 which is totally possible as he’s still capable and competitive
