Square should be looking at why games like Pokemon and Persona 5, and even indie games like Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes are successful. The reason/reasons? Complete gaming experiences and "turn-based" battle systems.
You forgot to mention that Square Enix had to sell Octopath Traveller and Kadokawa Games picked it up from em
Final Fantasy is not the only content they make what is wrong with you, and by the way with the PC stuff the average person don’t have enough money to build a high-end PC let alone minimum. Almost the average casual don’t want to waste their time doing a bunch of research for the best settings, they just want to plug and play what cap are you saying? 😒😒😒😒😒😒😒
Speaking of Forspoken, what's funny is that the "Agni's Philosophy" Tech Demo from 2012 was a better Forspoken. Even though it was a tech demo. You can see elements from Forspoken in that Tech demo.
You've earned my sub . -.

What does that statement even mean?
As a gamer for over 40 yrs.. SE ruined FF7 by expanding the story in order to milk the fans. Bloated & unneeded. It's like FF13 all over again.
Apparently no one on the board said- "why don't we just make good games?"
The problem with SE is that they're one of, if not the most arrogant gaming companies of all time.
They believe that they're the Mercedes Benz of gaming BECAUSE they make Final Fantasy.
Nothing shows this more than their official merch store where, where they sold the string around Aeriths neck for $200, or many of their extremely low quality figures priced way higher than their worth.
Their idiocy towards sales numbers has been a problem for over a decade. Even saying that Tomb Raiders sales back in 2011 were too low despite selling 5 million units.
I'm beginning to wonder how much money Square Enix themselves even has if they can't even fund their own games themselves and how/why they're still around as a company if they keep losing money financially. Like getting 100 million+ dollars from Sony to fund and help develop it just to f*** it up and lose money because of their pathetic unrealistic expectations they constantly make.
Like Square Enix is so desperate as hell for a game on one system or more systems to sell 10 million copies/units for them to consider it a success. If it can't ever hit 10 million and/or sells around 1 through 7 million, they look at it as a failure which is ridiculous. Square needs to their heads out of their... you know, and appreciate that a game/games good or not, sold whatever amounts.
I will never understand why they dont pump out more affordable merch at higher quantities vs the super expensive unobtainable figures that must cost more to produce.
If anyone see the interviewed of the first ff14 not the reborn. The director was really arrogant. When asked about jumping in the game he just smile and said we don’t have those things. And when people don’t like some of the characters in the game they would say, you are going to see him all the time so live with that. I find those answers very strange since in the past they were not like this. They were asking people’s opinions.
FF 16 sold 5 million according to themselves. Guess they’re selling FF too lol
Nintendo is worse though. Sqex and Nintendo should partner up to make a Mario 3D-all stars limited run game😂
Every time a Kotaku writer likes your game, a hundred PAYING customers lose interest .....
Actually, comparing the SBI Detected group, to the 30 or so writers at Kotaku, it's more like "Every time a Kotaku writer likes your game, *10,000* paying customers will refuse to buy it or support your company in the future."
Welp, you did it! You got studios like Tango closed while ones like Shift Up will keep making games.
Congratulations 👏👏👏👏
Who are you going to blame after you can't blame "wokeness" anymore?
Really, will you ever look in the mirror and see who's actually making the trends? It's you. 😂
These companies are just so stupid. You can develop superb games with moderate-size teams. They'd be a bit smaller in scale compared to the huge projects, but the cost to make them is much lower because you don't need to spend over half of the budget on coordinating hundreds of devs spread among many different teams. I think making a multitude of great, slightly smaller games will prove to be much more profitable than being a scumbag trying to milk people for all they've got and then losing big money once a major project fails.
Precisely. The budgets are out of control dumb and make no sense. They are chasing graphics and that's it. The games are movies and not fun anymore.
Watch, the next FF7R atrocity, all they're gonna focus on is just console exclusivity on the PS6, and just new graphics. And still load the game up with gay padded chores and more woke nonsense. What a damn shame.
@@KT-rq9id correct it's a mess at this point not to mention. Multi verse non sense SMH
@@justhomas83 the original is still better at this point. really wish we got a different type of remake, not so modernized, but an old school style remake. Like RE1 to RE1 REmake.
Squenix always put prestige in FF. Tho assuming them as the next big thing is very dumb of them. Also i rather have mainline FF as a one off masterpiece than a sequel driven game. The hype will always diminished specially when trends change.
People most likely play live service nowadays than single player ones.
Better end the game on its most hype than keeping them on the lease.
Never pre-order, Never buy day 1. 😮💨
100%.... might not be on "the leading edge" but that edge is headed towards a cliff.
Not buying it until its been proven worth the money they are asking.
The game companies are turning into shareholder pleasing companies... Guess they never go the memo. Gamers couldn't care less about shareholders and that is the way it's meant to be.
How do you please shareholders by being broke??? I just dont understand how these companies still exist.
It's worse, shareholders actually want profits, it's *stakeholders* that companies are trying to pander to AKA hypothetical people that may be somehow affected by the product.
Even if shareholders make money, if the rate they are making money stays the same or lowers (but they’re still making money) they will consider it a failure and demand drastic action.
Go buy some shares so you have a say in the matter. I'll advise 49% of the shares at minimum.
Without shareholder investment money, games don't get made. Games are too prohibitively expensive otherwise.
A) Live service games
B) NFTs investment
C) Sweetbaby based games like Forespoken
D) Price hike and splitting based games on multiple exclusive consoles.
Bad decisions along with overbloat staff would definitely cause deficit.
the NFT nonsense was absolutely distasteful as hell.
Don't forget Micro transactions for "cheat codes"
Sweetbaby... the service and reference company to game developers that a virtually nonexistent portion of gamers want influencing games. Kinda like hiring vegans to be consultants for a steak house!
Also:
-Changing the brand and formula like numbering FF series in to action instead to keep the turn based system with multiple playable characters.
Or making bs games no one wants like Valkyrie Elysium. People liked valkyrie profile if your not making a game like that there's no point using the brand for another boring action title.
Well maybe it was their own fault for trying to commit to making their shareholders more money. Rather than the players and fan base buying their products and keeping the lights on. Let em fall and see where the power vacuum takes us. Kinda the trend the last few years isn't it?
They will likely just sell the company to sony once it fails enough to become an issue.
Sad to see them go , we can't have nice thing because idiots that know nothing about its market only cares about lining its own pockets . The last time their was a crash ( I know about ) when something similar with ET , they had one man do the whole thing , had 3- 6 months to finish it because they wanted it in store before Christmas, dude never meant to make it a buggie mess and lost sleep trying to make it work .. how the games ended up in land fills and the company lost so much money they had to shut down .. I believe that's what happen , the man mightive had less time to work on it but it was bad , square soft , konami and arcades manage to bring the market back .
Movies have been throwing way too much money into their projects too. Where movies have to break $200 million at the box office just to break even. That and ignoring the fan base in order to pander to plebs over forcing ideology.
For me, the downfall of FFVII remake was 2 things. The most important and really dealbreaker for me... was that they decided to divide the game in parts since the start instead of making a whole game like it was originally. Like I would get a lot LESS story for MORE money 20 years later.
The second one for me was that it became an ARPG instead of a JRPG like the original.
Then they made it PS exclusive and later Epic games store exclusive when pc...
Anyone remember when Call of Duty was at its peak and they predicted that single player games would die out forever because most players never touch the campaign? One of many such cases. It's a terrible time for that segment of the industry, and most of all for the employees, but they'll eventually be forced to grapple with the fact that their business model isn't sustainable.
First thing they need to do is shut down that ethics department. They straight up have a vendetta against Tifa.
Not just Tifa they hate all characters of FF7 and the people in charge of making FF7 remakes both of them openly said they hated FF7. Stupid gamers still defending these games and buying them, games made by people only said they hated FF7.
What vendetta?

Agreed. And here I thought SE was going to find itself and return to what it was good at. God damnit Square Enix. Fist Sony and SE. How many other gaming companies that used to like have ended up being total jackasses and losers.
Rebirth sold half as much ad Rrmake. Am I the only one using logic here. The PS5 Install base is litteraly less than half of the PS4 install base when Remake launched.
Hiw is everyone just overlooking the fact that Rebirth launched on a console with 60 million less people having it. Geez basic math guys.

Then I bought stellar blade and it got censored.
Whoever is running the company is dumb
She explains this in the video.
Gaming activist these days will jump on anything.
@SG-pj5zl Yall and the Steller Blade got "censored" is really dumb
Two outfits were altered and it's not even the two most revealing outfits in the game. And if you're referring to the "gore". That's also a nonstarter because the only time Eve was ever featured with blood on her was in ONE cut scene. If you chose to wear the skin suit she's covered in blood. She just not covered I'm blood in any other outfit. Which makes sense because they spent all this time designing these outfits in the first place. Plus cutscenes with characters covered in blood have always looked stupid since none of the NOCs in any video game ever acknowledges the blood.
This is all on Square-Enix. All on fucking Square-Enix.
Seriously. They should just shut down their ethics department. Not only that but they need to stop investing in stuff like live service games. Stuff like that is doomed to fail. Flat out. They should also put their investment towards franchises that need the exposure like Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest needs it now more than ever and what Square-Enix is doing is simply fucked up. It really is.
Overspending, needless expenses chasing ESG scores that never result in profit, Ethics Department, selling off IPs to invest in NFTs, promising the remake of its most popular and beloved game only to deliver an alternative timeline where the characters fight an allegory for the fans to obtain their freedom, take too long to release the sequel allowing the reality of the fact sink in collectively, keeping single console exclusivity even if timed, and many other mistakes SE has done have led to this.
It isn't one thing or the other, it's a collective of their executives' incompetence! And SE will not recover from this unless the people making the decision are replaced, because I doubt any of them will learn their lesson.
correct.
That's actually a really good point about why microtransactions are more accepted these days; I hadn't really considered that games popular among the younger crowd are more like traditional... well... games. As for a video game crash, I think that could be a good thing; let these companies actually learn something, and the rest of us can just focus on our backlogs until the industry gets it together.
For years, we were told a remake of FF7 was coming. Then we got a terrible sequel being called a remake instead. Now that I know they have no interest in faithfully retelling the original story, I have no interest in playing it. What's more, I feel actively deceived by SquareEnix for lying to me and saying this was a remake to dupe me out of my money. They broke it up into multiple installments that I now know not to buy and will never trust SE as a company again.
How did they dupe you? Did you watch the trailers? Did you read any interviews? Square was honest about the changes to the games before the game was even released. You are lying to yourself. People were complaining about the development of the game since they scrapped all the progress and restart the project. Multiple installments is the best approach. No need to explain that. By all means, save your money, but at least do research into the games before slandering Square. Those trailers spoiled too much info for any consumer to be deceived
@@rzxwm10 Agreed. Despite all of the woke bs and bad business practices, I still had fun playing FFVII: Rebirth and FFVII: Remake.
@@rzxwm10 that's bs the title says remake. Tons of people were still arguing if its a true remake with new story elements or a sequel after the game was released and played. Also plenty of people don't like to look up too much info about games before they release to avoid seeing too much. Square is especially bad for that if you follow a game too closely you will have a lot of cool visuals revealed, some of the world building and plenty of other elements that you might want to experience for the first time in game rather then in some article or trailer. I usually like to watch the very fist bare bones trailer and avoid the rest so i don't have any visuals spoiled. When i went in i thought it was a remake with new ideas added to keep it fresh not a sequel. They were honest about the format but never mentioned it was a sequel. What they said cause i just looked it up is that the game would "not cover the original's complete story, but rather act as a standalone first game in "a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience".
@@MrArrow54same. I thought they were just going to go into more detail in some of the stuff they skimmed over in the OG. Not change up the story. I just cannot get into the remake. I tried playing a handful of times with only eventually giving it up. I did like how they dwelled into avalanche members better. But that's it.
@@danielfrain3521 ya i like some of the changes like the crazy soldier biker, the political stuff going on with shinra, wutai and the 2 avalanche groups. Those are great additions to spice up a remake but the weird ghosts trying to maintain the timeline and all the odd multiverse implications were a bit too much deviation for my taste. Its not even really a sequel so much as a retelling with some characters having knowledge of the original games events. Which i could have liked without the ghosts and that weird phantom zone garbage at the end.
Video games are imploding from the inside out. They had their profitable audience all to push them away and at every turn. It makes zero sense. Every genre of entertainment has been affected and the video game industry is the final frontier for destruction.

Bought development companies that they had no idea how to manage on top of wasting way too much money. This isn't the first time they went through this.
Sony also censored FF7 Rebirth and even remake right before release. Same thing they recently did to Stellar Blade. Pissed alot of people off
Please stop selling digital illusions. A collection is not only tangible, but an intrinsic component of the hobby..
Plus with consoles requiring internet to do initial setup just to play hard disc games. Has ruined gaming for me.
Executives, shareholders, and anti-gamers are the trifecta of fucking up gaming. Glad there are decades of catalogs to get back into.
WBs idiocy on full display. "We've had a massive hit with a traditional single player game and massive flop in a live service game, so we've decided to cut back on making traditional single player games." Bold move Cotton.
Also maybe Square Enix shouldn't stay exclusive to PS. Limiting the market for their games just to stick it to Xbox is shooting themselves in the foot to help another company out.
I'll be honest, all the censorship, crazy stuff happening in games, and quality generally becomes less over time while more expensive, I simply don't want to buy many games these days.
So their response to gamers saying "we're not buying your games because you're not making them for us" is to try and take their ball to an already overpopulated court. Words cannot describe the level of disappointment I'm feeling in the executives for these companies. To the shareholder boards, stop picking CEOs from bean counters, they don't understand how entertainment media markets work, they don't even seem to understand the concept of market saturation, let alone how to measure it.
So, the only reason I haven't bought FF7 Rebirth is because I am a PC Gamer. I am not going to pay for a PS5 just so I can play FF7 Rebirth. I bought a PS4 for FF7 Remake but I don't have the capital to buy a console every time there is a new FF7 release.
K.
Xbox and playstation are just locked down pcs at this point, may as well port everything over and sell in both markets.
Might explain the poor sales numbers of Rebirth. You sure are not the only one and I am pretty sure that SE did not normalize the sales numbers in advance of releasing the statement
@@Dathremar Nah. Too many trash PC ports... I'll play it on the rig it was built for.
I wouldn't recommend buying it at all. The FF7 'remake' games are nothing more than a jab towards the original. They reek of elitist devs at the wheel who don't respect the original, but hate it and just want to pretend they can do a better job. I'm sure a lot of the devs working on it are doing so with genuine feelings and respect for the original... but the ones at the wheel like Nomura and the writer... it's very apparent just how much they loathe the original.
What about the almost dozen "live service games " they closed in less than a year in the beginning of the year last year. I believe i read that they would have been profitable that year if it wasn't for those losing so much money.
What did they expect, they made it exclusive to a console with half the install base of PS4. I'm not going to buy $500 box to play one decent game.

These games are not more expeaive to make. It is the same game engine. They are just beholden to shareholders. If square had wanted tonmake money. They would have did an all platform release at the same time. Giving sony the exclusivity was where they messed up.

I'm coming from a completely selfish place here when i say that i kinda hope square gets bought out by capcom so i can get my parasite eve 1&2 remakes(screw the 3rd birthday)
I think the fact it's PS5 exclusive is what's lowering the sales.

So much justification for Rebirth trending down, instead of the actual explanation that people were dissatisfied with the treatment of Remake's narrative and didn't come back for a second slice, with those that did experiencing incredibly mixed signals. I know it isn't the whole picture, but they REALLY try to dance around the fact that a significant chunk of legacy players across multiple franchises are tired of being disappointed by baffling direction.
Square needs to, and has depended on, their old IP's providence to carry them. It seems that as the people who made those old IP's age and change standing, Square is left as a company that really consistently struggles to understand why it even became successful in the first place.

Literally everyone i know IRL who loved FF7 with me when it came out in the 90's have the same complaint about how they shafted PS4 adopters by making that Yuffie DLC PS5 exclusive. They should be doing Fromsoft way! Release on all platforms and No WOKE!
@@maxxgrit2124 Agreed.
Their best games are their lower budget ones like the Octopath Traveller ones. I also enjoyed Triangle Strategy. I don't think they meant those as HD ones.
They should lower their budgets by cutting down on graphics. There is no need currently to push the hardware.
FF has gone down saleswise since PS2 days. I'd assume they'd release a PC version, too
And the last good FF game was FFX from 2001.
They should blame their losses on the previous part being complete garbage. I’d rather pull my eyes out than play another abomination of ff7
The AAA games these days are never even complete they require you to download patches and updates and this is where they charge any content they deem indecent even if that's the reason you bought the game.
I dont think I've ever seen Squenix report a game of theirs selling within expectations, I remember back in the 360 era theirTomb Raider games would sell millions and yet they would always fall below expectations, same with their Hitman games, that sounds like a management issue, because I cannot fathom how a company can keep having unrealistic sales expectations for 2 decades straight.
Here's why I haven't purchased FF7 Rebirth: I feel like the botched the story of FF7 Remake really effing bad and I have lost the desire to check the rest of this story.
I might play it if it gets released in PsPlus or once it gets a very deep discount, but not before.
And even the PsPlus possibility is at risk because I'm seriously considering cancelling my subscription on account of Sony's double standards for censorship as well as my own perceived lack of received value on my sub. At best, I can hope to receive 1 game I'm interested in and might actually play once every 4 months. Instead, Sony insists of flooding me with sports titles (that I'm personally not at all a fan of) and other games I have 0 interest in.
Gaming used to be fun, but every passing day it feels less and less appealing.
Rebirth is amazing though, one of the best games I played in my life. No joke.
@@matan19Why did it flop in Japan? Explain that!
@@luciusirving5926 Why would I do that? Sales got nothing to with quality or my taste in video games
Serves em right for cucking to Sony...again.
One of the reasons I bought a PS4 was for this remake (I am a PC gamer). Then they screwed us over by jumping to PS5, which wasnt available, waiting 2 years to release on PC, and then pulling the same shit over again.
These third party developers need to knock this console exclusivity the fuck off.
9:35 Remake sold well thanks to the good will built by FFVII OG, but destroyed that good will by changing the game's story with poor narrative and mediocre characters... all Square needed to do was to re-create Sakaguchi's OG, with modern graphics, in order to make the game the greatest hit in the company's history.
Rebirth is still a trashy game... great graphics, but mediocre story and characters, and it lost the OG good will wave that let Remake sell more... OG fans hate these games, and I'll neber give Square a penny for this garbage.
Well, this is what happens when you pay grifters to destroy your games and remake 10 times the same freaking game.
Square Enix is in Hubris City. If one of those canceled games is Final Fantasy Tactics WotL Pixel Remaster, I'm gonna flip!
The fact that Rebirth sold less than Stellar Blade due to the KH direction of Kitase and Nomura is sad.
The fact you believe this delusion is a fact, is what's really sad here.
@@Ukaran No i would say your ability to bury your head in the sand and ignore all the facts is the sad part. I've seen you post the same tired lines a dozen times all arguing with people who say the same thing. If all these people believe the game sucks cause they aren't happy with the changes then its a fact that there is a portion of the fan base that didn't buy it cause of that. What do you gain from being on here denying reality and white knighting for this company?
So WBs take away from their Live Service game failing and their Single Player game succeeding is to make more Live Service Games and Less Single Player games?
That's their moronic thought process... because with live service they can attempt to nickel and dime players where as single player games they can't
@@MrEli768 Its short sighted you can beat a single player game in a few weeks and are looking for your next purchase where as a live service game keeps you invested so there's no time to play anything else. If your not the type to spend on micros or skins they don't get much from you and your not likely to buy the next new game. People only have so much time to invest in games so only a few live service titles can be successful at the same time. It's dumb for all these companies to think they can replicate the winning formula and pull people away from current games like fortnite, ff14 or whatever else manages to hit with people.
perhaps the developers/publishers need to start creating games in which the plot features predatory corporations bleeding their customers dry with aggressive micro-transactions, then the real micro-transactions won't be so immersion breaking
I have a feeling Square Enix may eventually go the route of Konami or something similar.
Let them go that route.
Oh GOD no!
I don't like DLC, but I can tolerate a small amount of it. All of Square Enix's games are way too heavily monetized. The base product for the past decade and half has always been severely incomplete. Their mobile games area also unattractive because SE treats them like quick pump and dump cash grabs. They're heavily monetized, often have out-of-control power creep and most of their mobile games go EOS quite quickly, which makes me not want to get into them in the first place.
I didn't get to buy/play Final Fantasy 7 Remake until months after launch and despite having a really good time during my plsythrough, it felt empty and shallow when I beat it, knowing how much of the story there is left to be told and I imagine lots of other players felt the same way, thus not jumping at Rebith out of fear that it will have us feeling the same way by its end. I used to feel that Square Enix was one of the best, most reliable publishers in all video games not too long ago as both their western (Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Hitman) and their eastern (Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Project Octopath) releases were good, quality, content-rich releases. Then The Avengers happened and my faith was completely destroyed. After terribly fumbling the easiest layup in gaming history, they've earned any damage to their business and reputation that's come their way. I'm currently playing through Final Fantasy XVI and while it's pretty good, it hasn't been nearly as all-absorbing as the series has been in the past.
Their execs are heavily into the receiving end of S&M, so being called massive losers by the esteemed Lady Decade actually gets them hard.
A big reason Rebirth isn't selling anywhere near as well is because Remake was sold as a faithful remake. Then when loads of the people who bought it found out it was just turned into linear dragged out bullshit they were put off and didn't bother wasting their time and money on Rebirth. I didn't even pay for Remake, still felt robbed. Square Enix have churned out nothing but shit ever since they merged.
Rebirth's PS5 exclusivity was a bonehead move. So many gamers are still gaming on PS4s or are simply PC only gamers. They sabotaged themselves by releasing on only one platform.
you forgot to mention: Foamstars, BABYLON'S FALL, BALAN WONDERWORLD, and Garbage of Paradise.
Hello Lady Decade!! From Portales, NM!
While these Final Fantasy sales woes certainly aren't nothing, they pale in comparison to Square Enix's inconceivable mishandling of The Avengers. They are gifted a license for the hottest media property at the time and practically flush it down the toilet, creating a (dull) live service platform when they could have instead built a (brilliant) cinematic campaign.
Imagine making ff7 for 25 years and then wondering why people are buying less copies.
Problem is, these CEO most of the time don't understand the medium and can't read the market, so they hide behind their concept of "volatility", SE Yosuke Matsuda was so out of touch he started to take dumb decisions (NFTs anyone?) and put SE in a difficult situation despite having strong assets, hopefully Takashi Kiryu will put the ship back afloat.
One of the points brought up was the spread of the FF7 story over three games. This reminded me of the game .Hack where if you wanted the full story, purchasing or having access to all 4 games was a must. Looking back at it, I don't recall ever completing part 4.
If people taught FF7 Rebirth was going to outsell Remake. I’m sorry you were in Lala Land. Statistics show only 10 to 20% will finish a game at any time.
Makes me wonder how many people finished remake
This is why I do not own a PlayStation 5 or Xbox X or S and why retro games are so popular.
If this is the case, then I dread to think how Kingdom Hearts 4 will play out should Square Enix continue to walk this path.
One thing that never gets mentioned about Live Service games is that, unless you happen to be that one successful one a year, the whole system is a death spiral. The games get made with lack of content because "it can be patched(or sold) later" and a ton of microtransactions. A lot of that stuff drives people away and when playerbases drop the support for the game gets pulled. There is no winning with Liver service games unless you are the ONE shining star that manages to stand out. But most publishers don't want to even invest enough to make the game good enough for that. Not to mention the vastly inflated costs of game development. Most of these rising costs are just a self inflicted and completely unnneccesary problem that could easily be kept in check with better management(and not paying CEO's millions each year) but that would require effort these publishers are not willing to put in.
And just to add, the sooner Sony dies off the better, they have been the peak of anti consumer and narcissism in recent years and have actively made gaming as a whole worse so nothing of value would be lost.
*WHISPER* me this Square Enix 😂
PS4 sales are greater than pc and smallsoft console combined. The sad part is mobile gmaing beats all them together AAA games can only sell well enough to cover their costs on mobile. All the most popular games are on mobile pc noobs
Square-Enix...
- Resurrected Deus Ex just to kill it again with greed.
- Made Lara Croft a crybaby.
- Killed those IPs to make live-service Marvel games instead.
- Allowed the Nomura-Kitase-Hamauzu trio to flourish (srsly without Sakaguchi to supervise them they've only did shit).
- Tried to milk out Matsuno's IPs then got rid of him.
- Tried to milk out Final Fantasy and any remotely successful IP by making useless extended universes and trilogies (FFVII, FFXIII, FFXV, Ivalice, Seiken Densetsu, Valkyrie Profile) ...
... Releasing half-baked games nobody asked for then wondering why and how they've all run to the ground.
I could go on and on :/
I got remake on ps4 and pc but not getting a ps5 just for rebirth (although I really hope it does come to pc)
I have a very serious question that I think all of us should ponder about if we don't respond to this: is Square Enix more likely to stay in business over the next few decades if they yield to the gamers' demands or the investors'? Because the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy is a HUGE YIELD to us. No, we do not have Rebirth's budget number available to us, but much of the concern about Squre Enix's survivability is coming from people who played the game, not people who didn't. As someone who loves it myself, this game is not low quality or small. Oh my god, it is the biggest demonstration of a massive budget I have ever seen! Looking at it alone I would peg it as being above two hundred million if not more.
So if we want to see more potential classics from them (or at the very least great games) in the future, do we wanna see them yield for a bit to the lowest common denominators? Or do we think catering to our desires is more likely to make them secure? This is probably a question more aimed at people who have better market analysis skills or more information.
It wasn't a huge yield they didn't make the game fans were asking for they remade the ip. The fans wanted a ff7 remake what they got was a reimagining or sequel so they yielded just a bit while making it a new IP at the same time because they didn't want to recreate the game. If anything their just using the ip to attract fans while trying to create a new experience for modern audiences. When you try to please everyone you tend to fall short. That's why there are so many rumors about the sales being low. Plenty of people like myself bought remake and just didn't buy rebirth cause now we know what to expect.
To answer your question i don't think i want more classics or "great games" from them. Forspoken, Valkyrie Elysium, Stangers of paradise, ff16 all their games are now action based devil may cry type stuff that their original audience never asked for. When they do remake titles like ff7 it has nothing in common with the original outside character and world building. They can still tell good stories but the gameplay is pretty boring. As seen by Atlus the makers of Persona and Monolith soft the people who make xenoblade or Larian the Baldurs gate guys sticking to the formula fans want is what makes money not abandoning your fan base to chase mass appeal.
I think one of the issues with FF7 Rebirth is that a lot of people felt tricked by FF7 Remake. The thing they were clamoring for over the years was a remake, not a remake with changes to the story.
I know that I was cautious when they said it was all Midgar, and I decided not to buy it after hearing that they changed things. I do plan to give it a chance eventually, but I'm going to wait until they are done with it.
Their explanations are crap video games have always been on The cutting edge of what graphics can be done at the time and the computers that produce those games are always advanced for the time so there's no reason that the cost should go up they already own the computers from the last game they made the only real cost would be labor. The honest explanation is the shareholders want to make more money every fiscal year. We need to stop having shareholders in video game companies I guess cuz they're the only reason the price is going up cuz as we all know the minimum wage and wages in general haven't grown with inflation so I doubt that they're paying these guys exponentially more than what they were paid 20 years ago but the CEOs and the shareholders are definitely making exponentially more
I couldn't have said it better
I swear lady decade is the best journalist I've come across. She always has unique insights, does an incredible job of digging up the history and data on a topic, and delivers it all in a wonderfully worded package. I'd like to see her view points on other topics some day, should she tire of this medium or need to take a break from it.
Gen Z ruined the video game community, matter fact Gen Z ruined everything including movies, music, sports, social media, consumer products and most importantly society.
And who raised Gen Z? Just saying.
only thing they havent ruined is anime and manga
Gen z are morons ngl
Orrrrr corporations ruined these things in their vain attempts to squeeze more money out of consumers to enrich execs and shareholders.
Not yet! Give it time!
