The reason Mark and others are making this an issue, is that AAA games have been uglifying female characters and making other political/cultural motivated changes to games for years. Gamers are sick of it. The context is that SB looked to be a win for gamers.. then sony bent the knee to the activist game journos at the last minute. Is the costume change minor? sure. Lady Decade,
I disagree that Stellar Blade has _"a _*_certain_*_ demographic in mind."_ This game is *massively popular with women* and men. I watched 95 women play the game demo, and 94% of these women have no problem with Eve's character design and clothing, most of these *women love her design and her clothing* . The only restriction to its target demographic is the age limit. I agree with Mark Kern alias Grummz that this game is "a beacon for freedom of expression", because the game - more specifically its protagonist Eve - has been attacked relentlessly by Western game journalists and political activists on Twitter. It therefore *is* a question of free speech and artistic expression to allow this game to exist as intended by its creator company _Shift Up._

It absolutely is aimed squarely at straight men there be honest. the game itself seems solid, i haven't played it, and there's always been instances of girls liking things designed and marketed towards men and that's completely fine, but the character designs of this game, like NIKKE before it, are very clearly aimed at dudes don't be silly.
I'm not saying that's a bad thing btw, but arguing that this game isn't aimed at straight men just because some women happen to like it, just isn't correct sir.

@@TheAcad3mic _"arguing that this game isn't aimed at straight men..."_
I never did that. I wrote, _"This game is massively popular with women and men."_
Besides that, it isn't just "some" women who like this game. 99% of the women I watched playing the demo liked it very much. The only woman who did not like the game found the combat too difficult. 99% of the women liked the body of Eve. One found her face "child like", which she disapproved of. 94% liked Eve's outfits. Because my sample size is 95 women (all I could find in all languages except Japanese and Korean), I dare to speak with the authority of empirical evidence on this topic.

    • @TheAcad3mic
      @TheAcad3mic หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@Viewable11 you're arguing against the point that this game is aimed at the male demographic. The fact that women like it doesn't change the very clear fact that it's made with men in mind.
Also if you're going to act like you're talking about this with an air of academia you should consider the very strong bias that's built into the group of people, men or women, that would be among the crowd to download this game, plus the cultural bias of your dataset.
But that's semantics; this game is absolutely aimed at straight men primarily come on dawg.

I suspect that the push to avoid the term JRPG has more to do with the growing stigma surrounding “western RPGs” rather than “othering” language. Most of the dumb stuff people say comes from the attempt to mask their true motives.

Back in early ps3 era there was only 1 Final Fantasy game which was divisive and lots of lacklustre titles from studios like Compile Heart and Nippon Ichi Software that relied heavily on visual novel style storytelling. I also heard some Japanese developers struggled with adapting to developing for HD which is why some games went onto Nintendo ds instead of consoles. Kingdom Hearts skipped PS3 entirely and Persona 5 was released right at the very end of the PS3's lifespan.
SMT4 was exclusive to 3ds as well.

The problem that people are upset about is that they had already purchased the game before the censorship had been implemented, especially after the developer texted a week before that it was going to be distributed to all markets "UNCENSORED".
They received the game, then after having to parch it , after installing it uncensored, the day 1 patch made the changes that are being discussed.
So the option to "not buy it" was circumvented by the distributor by changing it after the fact.

These video "essays" are so good 🔥 and I feel are very important right now.
Here in Denmark (a country that prides itself with its free speech) a man just got 7 days in jail for hosting a website for jokes, because some was considered discrimatory. Yes, a site with thousands of jokes of all kinds, on a web site called Jokes & Vitser (Jokes and gags) didn't clue people in that its content wasn't to be taken seriously.
Sadly no news outlet wants to talk about the situation, because they themselves cannot even give examples out of fear for being jailed too. But having done some digging, most of them are dad jokes levels of humor.
    One I found was:
    - What do you say to a crying African?
    - Things must be looking black.
(In Danish you would use the word black instead of bleak)
Yeah a pun joke, that because it involved someone from Africa, was deemed too offensive and required this guy, who himself was from Iran, some prison time. Sigh ...
My point is, I know video games are next, because our current politicians are very much in line with the average gaming journalists.
Denmark that has never, ever, banned a game before, even some of the most controversial ones have been protected by our free speech right.
But I know this is the first step in the wrong direction, a lesser direction.
So thank you for speaking up against censorship and the thought police. 🇬🇧 🇩🇰

I wasn't going to comment until Lady Decade hit on JRPGs. As a member of the OGG (Original Gaming Generation), I watched the start of video games from PONG on home console in '76, to various consoles that were manufactured (Playstation, Sega, XBOX, etc) and computer games such as ZORK on the Commodore. When the RPG rose in popularity, the market got games from different developers who were located in different countries. This meant you saw different art styles, game mechanics, narratives, etc, all brought into one genre. This diversity gave rise to the consumer gradually making a distinction between these RPGs, such as JRPG, merely to highlight these various differences due to culture differences that a consumer would find in the games. I knew as a consumer if I bought a JRPG I would see a certain art style, game mechanic, etc, and if I bought a western RPG I would see a different art style, game mechanic, narrative structure, etc. There was no negative connotation; merely a way to distinguish between them.

Sony doesnt care though they already have shit tons of cash and ESG/DEI investments on top of that, so long as they behave like good little boys and girls. They're the ones responsible, they hold all the power. The fact that the costumes even exist in the game's on disc physical release is proof positive that Shift Up have EVERY intention of releasing them to be worn and enjoyed by the playerbase. That they're mysteriously censored out thanks to a mandatory day 1 patch (for anyone who bought the digital version) is only something that could have been a thing at the behest of Sony. And since Sony only cares about their DEI/ESG driven agenda these days, it was an easy call for them to make. Thats why Mark's petition is so important. Sign the petition, cancel your PS+ membership. If 10s of thousands of gamers did this it would impact Sony's bottom line by millions of dollars.

DEI and ESG are prerequisites these days. This propaganda is using your word, manufactured. Never played the game, but since when do people hate T&A? Game "Journalists" trying to gain clout. It's all pathetic. As I understand, there is no real rubric or baseline requirements to be a Journo, so why listen to them? This isn't DOA beach volleyball. Do you want to be represented, or be in a fantasy world? Best representation for me is being able to drive a car I've owned IRL in Forza. Does Mario represent anyone? Maybe we should retcon that character. About the JRPG thing:
Final Fantasy XVI's producer Naoki Yoshida recently shared that he doesn't like the term "JRPG" when referring to the role-playing games Square Enix creates.
At one point, Skill-Up asked Yoshida about a previous comment he made about how the action game genre has advanced and was now the norm, and if he was implying the JRPGs hadn't advanced in the same way.
Skill-Up explained that it seemed Yoshida didn't like the phrasing of the question, to which his translator said, "The thing that [Yoshida] wants to get across is that when we are creating games, at least with our team, we don’t go into them thinking that we’re going to be creating JRPGs, we just go into them thinking we’re going to create RPGs."
When asked to elaborate, Yoshida said, "This is going to depend on who you ask but there was a time when this term first appeared 15 years ago, and for us as developers the first time we heard it, it was like a discriminatory term. As though we were being made fun of for creating these games, and so for some developers, the term JRPG can be something that will maybe trigger bad feelings because of what it was in the past.
"It wasn’t a compliment to a lot of developers in Japan," he continued. "We understand that recently, JRPG has better connotations and it’s being used as a positive but we still remember the time when it was used as a negative."
Those two are still dumb, and their point has no nuance but there actually was a time when the term JRPG was as a derogative.

Great and high effort video! Though I wish there was more focus on Sony censorship and the double standard of having full nudity, sex, and even beastiality in western games such as Baldur’s Gate 3, The Last of Us 2, and Cyberpunk 2077, while having no nudity or sex in Asian games that do get censored, in this case Stellar Blade. Instead there was too much zoned in focus and time spent on a couple journalists. Just my two cents. Otherwise, great work and thanks for supporting the #FreeStellarBlade movement!

Nothing more machiavellian than polarizing 2 sides up to a extreme that they defend each other's essences against each other... By directly making them do so right in their faces, no less. I bet there has always been a solution ready that involves making all THREE sides compromise, so it seems reasonable. That and/or some entity is just looking to disrupt this side of the world, the one in which all of this is taking place.

You're absolutely correct, all f this was harmless for the game devs to remove and censor many of these things. Censoring and removing Bowsers remarks were silly and harmless, I agree. It didn't affect anyone when they played the game without the fat shaming.

I thought "JRPG" was commentary on design philosophy differences and it's now somehow racist and I have a headache.

    • @mgass1354
      @mgass1354 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Exactly. I made the same point in my reply. When the term "JRPG" came about, it was so a consumer would know the product, ie game, would have certain art styles, game mechanics, story narratives, etc. That's it. How this has now become "you're racist" is beyond me.

I'm not sure if anyone else has thought of this, but with the censored day 1 patch on the digital copy, many gamers are opting for a physical copy in a time where corporations are pushing hard for a digital only future. Many gamers collect physical media, but many others opt for digital out of convenience. However, in the case of Stellar Blade, more gamers who would otherwise have downloaded the digital version are instead opting for a hard copy just to dodge the censorship. So, in a roundabout way, Sony has unwittingly given players incentive to buy the disk instead, despite their ongoing push towards digital.

What LD says at about 11:35 in this video reminds me of this quote...
*_"The monster never sees a monster in the mirror."_*
    - J Michael Strazinski, creator of *BABYLON 5.*
*EDIT→* I also thought of a music quote, which kinda/sorta applies as well...
*_"The wolf is always at the door."_*
    - Don Henley, _New York Minute_

The rewriting history part is kind of true. The fact they are ruining games and not making mods like other gamers is one part. The other part is kicking mods off mod server's due to the ideology being pushed. Also the % they represent vs. Traditional gamers wants. All the games the changed and made worse rather than make mods. There is a sickness in the gaming industry and movies and such. There is a version of revisionist history being pushed. Disenfranchising the majority of gamers and specifically attacking men/males. Which is not diverse. Ironies lol

Here’s my nugget to offer the convo.
The games industry has AO rated games and M rated games because Adult is about age, and M is about Maturity.
Where you can be an adult in number, but not necessarily mature.
With some nuance, it’s pretty glaring that some of these journos aren’t mature enough for M rated games like Stellar Blade.
This keeps me wondering why they’re even bothering to address it. It just comes off as crazy person screaming at manager.
Personally if a game isn’t my cup of tea, I leave it alone and mind my business.✌🏽peace y’all.

Surprisingly accurate and detailed analysis that reaches far beyond just gaming. As you said, replace "Gaming" with any other topic, and it makes just sense in so many ways. I really enjoyed your breakdown and how you supported your arguments. And how it is clear that you are being self aware at each point, showing that you considered the point carefully and assessed if its biased and etc.
Personally, I am loving Stellar Blade. Amongst other things, I am also amazed at the quality of texturing on the materials of the outfits - these materials just look real. Sure, some outfits can be ridiculously revealing (probably targeting a certain demographic that most likely would be male - I am not judging here) or some outfits are questionable aesthetically, but they fit the style of the game overall. (It does seem weird that Eve would have such revealing outfits while Adam is so completely covered - Adam is more interesting to me than Eve and needs a more interesting set of outfits ;) But it fits the anime heroine trope so I'm okay with it).
In terms of the censorship - the dev team said it was aesthetic reasons for the changes (paraphrased a little but that's what it boiled down to). It seems like a decision of the design and art team, and is possibly something they were switching back and forth with for some time (given that complete models for both were available on release. That does not seem as much like censorship - unless an external force made the decision, its an internal design decision. Its not like the changed outfits are more revealing than others that exist in the game, which would make the argument that it is censorship even less likely.
And what was changed seems to mostly focus on 2-3 outfits - I have used two of the outfits for a bit. I like some of the changes to the Peony outfit - the tights look nice and make sense here and add a little elegance. I dislike the changes to the Holiday Rabbit - they should have changed the shape of the top as this added cloth looks weirdly shaped - but also, I'm less interested in this outfit as it is just very plain in general. But honestly, what they could have done was give the option for both versions and let the end user decide, perhaps in the form of "Style Variations" rather than separate outfits. Could that make everyone happy?
Honestly, the biggest aspect of the game I enjoy is the amazing soundscape. And the combat system. The outfits are fun to collect, but I am likely going to complete the game wearing the "Red Passion" outfit.
Apparently I did have lots of feelings about this topic. I wasnt expecting such a wall of text. Which is likely just my inarticulate ADHD brain thought stream. :) Hope you enjoyed reading :D
