Im going to be a new rver in September! The stability is going to be important to me because it's going to be a small rv! The Rubicon 1200rk!
Welcome aboard! Thats super exciting - such a cool design and blend between a traditional trailer and a teardrop.
For those that are math averse, measure the height to the top of the I beam and multiply by 1.414! Or just add 40%. As for tripping, paint them yellow, white, orange, etc or add some reflective red and white safety stripes.
We've really not had ANY tripping incidences with them over the years - you'd think it would be more of an issue- but it all depends on placement and walking patterns - might be different with different rig setups
Built these after watching the test and they work AMAZING. Just painted mine safety yellow and added reflectors because they stick out.
Isn't it impressive how well they work!?!
@@rvgearandfar You aint kidding! And I had the 2x6's already, just bought eye bolts. I've got a lot of good info from your page.
Another good idea
Painting them
That's what I'm worried about
These really work on my wolf pup single axle ,which had to be about 8" shorter. Got my wood from my local lumber yard, used in binding boards (free) .Hardware & binders less than $15. Very stable.
Nicely done!
We just use two bottle jacks. One to level the other to remove any suspension compression on the other side. Like $40 a jack faster the wheel level ramps. Also duel use for tire and break maintenance. Removes side to side.
With x chocks, and stabilizers it’s very solid. Only down side it the color bright red.
Thinking of painting them black.
You're leveling the entire frame with a bottle jack?
I did this and added short 2x4 blocks for when on gravel, dirt or other soft ground to allow the braces to slide rather than dig in. When on steep uneven ground I use blocks to maintain 30-45°.
I’m also looking to create an adjustable length set using metal studs.
I thought having an adjustable set would be cool - but honestly -- haven't found one campsite where it would have been useful - the angle changes a bit but they still work fantastically.
Have you thought of painting the ends of the wood a bright color so they are easier to see so they aren't a trio hazard.
I have - but in almost 3 years of constant use - we haven't found the need - tripping over them hasn't been an issue at all.
I guess if you're gonna be swinging your butt side to side like he did, you'll need these. That sad, if you're going to make these, why not just add multiple I bolts, one at either end and one in the middle...?
The over exaggerated movement just shows HOW well they work - someone getting up to go to the bathroom rocks the rig quite a bit when laying in bed. And sure, you could absolutely add more bolts - I haven't found it necessary in almost three years of use.
I've been looking to change out our stabilizers on our popup camper.. with two adults and two kids. that pop up certainly moves around. I can see the stabilizers moving too - its an old camper we've been fixing up and improving as needed. This seems like ti would really solidify the camper.
Definitely!
Better stability but not a substitute for stabilizers, rather an addition.
@@paulsylvester1394 agreed
My 2024 JayFeather, 21MML, came with Rock solid Stabilizers (similar design as your system). I was wondering if just adding the ratchet straps to those would have the same effect?
Thats a great question - I haven't been able to test out those new drop down stabilizers yet - give it a go and let us know!
I made an additional set that is shorter to help with uneven ground.
👍
Awesome. Thanks. I made them and they worked great.
Great to hear! Happy Camping
I have a relatively small RV in a 1989 (yes old) 26’ Fleetwood Wilderness 5th wheel. When I was living in it on my own for a few years while going to college I didn’t notice how unstable it really was even with all the stabilizers down. Recently I went camping with my wife and kids (4 1/2 and 18 months) and boy did I notice the shaking that was still going on with every movement while I was sleeping or other things in the rig.
I am going to try a set of these on the rear of my rig as the front has wide landing platforms because it is a 5th wheel. If needed I will put a set of these on the front as well. What a great and inexpensive idea! Thank You!
They definitely help a ton!
I love this idea! I'm going to do it
You won't be disappointed
In another video you recommended Hub Saver Washers but I’m having trouble finding them. Can you supply a link please??
Here you go: thehubsaver.com/
Cool idea. I’ve been looking for a reason to get some of those auto retract straps….
They are super handy and so much tidier!
I made a set of these and the work fantastic. I have 2 doors so they go next to each set of stairs. I made mine with 2 longer and 2 shorter boards. 9 times out of 10 they are going to work perfect and you can arrange them how you see fit.
Nice! Ever run into a situation where your shorter ones end up being too short?
@@rvgearandfar Not yet. but I have had the longer ones be a bit too long and they hit the skirt of the camper.
So, DIY jt strong arms.. Cheaper and probably work just as well, if not better.. Good deal!
They're awesome!
Do you use 2 or 4 of these? If you only use 2 which end do you use them on? In the video it appears you put them in the front.
I use two pairs of- so 4 pieces of wood and 2 straps- one set up front and one set in the rear
Super great idea! I have a 29’ TT with a 3 bunk bunkhouse. Every movement of the kids rocks that trailer 😮
This will definitely help you with that!!!
Great idea and really, really well done video as well.
Thanks Tony & Peggy!
It is not that they are at 45° angle. This is a low cost solution, but muck like having permanent mounted scissors jacks are convenient enough to be worth the cost of having 4 loose jacks, consider this:
What is just as effective and easier to deal with is retracting outriggers. Tube that is size of truck hitch that goes across front and rear of rv welded to the trailer frame via brackets (NEVER weld across flanges of a frame). Now a slide out screw jack like the tongue of the trailer has welded to 2” draw bar size tube. Slide them in for traveling and slide out then jack up the four corners until level. Being just infront and behind the trailer body means nothing actually is wider than the trailer body when towing.
If you still don’t get what I mean- look up pictures of OUTRIGGERS on a mobile crane truck.
It will be more costly, but if done instead of scissor jacks, you also have easier time with set up.
I used to build custom industrial trailers and applied this idea for different applications.
Oh, when you drill the cross pin holes that has the tube sliding inside the other- drill one hole for transport, one for full extension point, one as close to the trailer as possible incase you get someplace where you can’t extend the non door side like a rock or tree. Having 3 extended and one close is still far more stable than any jack under the trailer can ever give.
Remember- this is lateral stability so the wider it gets the more stable it becomes.
Love the idea! Probably more cost prohibitive for most RVers
Great project. Thanks for taking the time to share this info
You're welcome!
This is the best video on youtube. I did it today and it made it feel super solid. Thank you.
That is super kind of you to say! I'm glad you found value in it - these inexpensive DIY stabilizers work incredibly well - I'm surprised the industry hasn't figured out something similar to come standard.
Thank you for this video! How long should I measure for the size of the ratchet strap?
I use 10ft ones but anything 10ft or longer should work with a normal width RV

@@rvgearandfar Thanks much!
Cool
They work well - planning to make some?
I think this is what the manufacturers of the cantilever drop down legs were attempting to achieve , but obviously they couldn't because of manufacturer liability.
I hate the jiggle and wiggle in the morning .... I'm Always the last to bed and the last up , so I'm going to have to build some.
Going to get some aluminum C or I channel , then there are no concerns about insects in the wood crevices, and no moist wood when putting them away in the trailer.
They'll definitely improve the jiggle and wiggle!
08:08 What are these orange things called?
808 is the end of the video - I'm not sure what orange things YT showed you.
@@rvgearandfar 04:22 orange square.
Lynx Levelers - type in RV leveling blocks into Amazon and there will be loads of options- super handy piece of gear!
@@rvgearandfar thanks a lot!
Small come along will work well.
Yupp! Can even use plain ole rope with a truckers hitch too
I wonder if making these on edge instead would provide greater stability. I think there would be less flexing that way.
Possibly, and I've seen people use them in that orientation - I think it'd be really hard to measure the difference if there is any performance wise.
Question What do we do? we have a all weather package so frame is not exposed, afraid if it slips will puncture the bottom!
If you can't see the frame at all you may need to cut away some of the plastic underbelly to make an accesspoint in order to use this method.
Love it! Will be putting a set together this weekend for our next trip
You won’t be disappointed!
Do you not have to worry about the 2x4 driving up into the floor?
Its resting into the top corner of the frame I Beam
Did have these boards stabilized on the front and rear of the trailer? Or only on the front
I use them on the front and the rear.
Why did you add a small board to each one?
I only added it to one of them - I use that board right below my front pass through - we use it as a small step to reach things deep within the pass through ◡̈
What is that “shoe” that you have on the mechanic stabilizers?

Do these work for class c rvs?
If you have an I-beam frame it would work - I haven't personally looked up under any Class C's to verify myself
has this been done with a pop up ??
I didn’t try these when I had my pop up to confirm - but as long as there is a place to nestle the wood into the frame (and not the floor) I don’t see why not? It would make a helluva difference for sure
OMG thank you!
Welcome! They're awesome and totally work
Good idea
They work well - givem a try!
Brilliant.
They are SO easy and SO SO SO SO effective.
Nice job
Thanks! Happy Camping!
This is so helpful! Thank you!
Absolutely! I love it when the DIY project works out SO well!
@@rvgearandfar Gonna have to try these when banging the Mrs, they should help with the rocking too and fro, right.
@@larrycavanaugh7780 Most definitely will help with adult activities rockin' the rig.
Well done
Thank you!!
