Throughout the early arcs, like the exam and the Heavens Arena, Gon doesn't do any killing of his own, but he's surrounded by death at every turn and doesn't even blink. Considering his age and inexperience at the time, Gon should be at least a little unsettled by death and violence, but he doesn't seem to mind. On Zevil Island he would just watch people sneaking up on each other, instead of trying to save them like the usual blockhead hero. He's a very refreshing shonen protagonist in that regard. He isn't bad by any means, does not enjoy hurting people and will help out selflessly, but he seems to understand and accept the life he and his fellow hunters signed up for so he doesn't lose sleep unless it's one of his friends in trouble
that's not a smile of being impressed but a smile of "Holy shit did I just see that!?" like he knows killua is an assassin but it became real watching Killua actually do it

I like how in this version Kurapika is also uncertain, not as much as Leorio but still. In the 2011 version they really make Leorio out to be the weakest. Especially mentally. It's nice to see that the worry is shared by both rather than just him.

I actually think the 1999 version handles Killua's character development better in some ways, but the 2011 version has its strengths too.

I feel like the fact that 2011 started off lighter-hearted than the 1999 version, it helps the mood change when shit REALLY goes down in the later arcs...Chimera Ant is one of the most the most fucked up and bloody things I've ever seen in ANY anime. You think those cute kids are gonna be saved by a random, passing hero? Fuck no, they die a brutal death and get turned into ground meat.

Ill be honest I like 1999 version nore and here's why. I don't know about you but I do enjoy seeing the filler scene taking place in between or rather not filler scenes but extended scenes, more longer than necessary. It brings a good flow rather than cut scene here to there just for the sake of following the manga. Also I prefer the design quality over 2011's. Reason is because this version looks more mature and theres more detailing while as 2011 make every character more kId friendly and before you say anything yes I have seen the chimera ant arc and yes there is blood and some gore on top of the characters looking too childish but point is I am not saying the 2011 version is immature at all. Had 1999 version went that far, I'm willing to bet it would look more gory and bloody. Also 2011 version looks to colorful and flashy which actually kills it for me. Compare both illumis in both versions would you rather say 1999 looks better? I would because it looks more authentic. I mean illumi in all that green looked waaay to bizarre, same for pokkle who wears nearly all pink, some characters have no color variety while others have too much than necessary which also I find 1999 version a great balance. On top of Way too colorful and the lighting was bright, 1999 was darker which actually is a better image tone. I also like hisoka with blue hair better. Idk it look like it fit more properly even if orange was original. Also the music in 1999 was better in my opinion. All in all I find 1999 version to be superior in every aspect. The only thing good about 2011 thats better is the quality of the animation, which is way more fluent. Both voice acting is good but whatever is better depends all on preference. I really do believe people prefer madhouse because of its reputation, flashiness and superior animation or some people can't stand outdated things so any remake is always better if its up to date technology which I find to be ignorant.
I never called "everyone" ignorant. What I said is people who automatically believe that remakes are better than the original, are the ones ignorant. Because half of those people only looked at it first glance, they have not given a proper judgment. However, people who responds that remakes are always better because of reputation of the animation/animators or because they can't stand anything that looks like from the 90's or a lesser time period, remakes automatically win because it's done digitally or something. That's like saying Final Fantasy 13 is better than Final Fantasy 6. People do not disclosed narrow mindedness because they will only play things that are current or some years fall behind. Therefore, they are ignorant because they only play things with good graphics and not in terms of quality. Even in animation Batman the animated series, it's from the 90's and it's animation is still superb and the tone is very dark which is very fitting... Compared to Batman the Brave and the Bold. Which is not too recent but also has great animation but the tone is too cartoonish. Comparing that with HXH The first time they animate it is darker which is more suiting to the atmosphere and setting, then you got the newer versions, which the animation is way better but the pacing and transition between scenes from one thing to another, is actually not smooth because the HXH2011 is trying to follow the manga as closely as possible and cut out the filler time in between each panel (which often times, the transition of scenes in the manga is not as clear; It's the animators job to fill that in smoothly), making it seemed rushed. Though you could say the old HXH extend the minor filler scene too long. It all comes down to preference, but anyways my point is don't let preference or being bias cloud your judgement. Because if anything flashy animation is one thing but isn't tone and atmosphere the most important to any anime? I believe so. (And oh my god I talk too much. I will shut up now.) ((zip))
cmsasuke17 You have the higher ground since you've seen both versions but as a watcher of the 2011 version only, I don't feel that lack of pacing or transition. For example, the whole Yorknew arc was setup with the Greed Island objective. When the whole auction/phatom troupe thing was settled with, the game was brought fourth into first plane again. I don't see how fillers would've benefited these transitions but their enjoyment is anyone's preference as you mentioned. My opinion is that they weren't needed. I also feel that you're misinterpreting this version's palette with the meaning of what makes something dark. This show is deffinitely dark. Darker than the original? I can't say but today's emeblishment and enhancements don't detract the tone the slightest, I find. It's just a matter of where in the story you're at. At points the show is obviously lighter to cater the audiences but it definitely allows itself to be heavy. I just regret it doesn't fully fledge to mature audiences with a bit more graphical violence but hey.. you can't have everything.

His best friend just killed someone right but he didn't feel contradicted considering his morals. Also, I do believe this is the beginning of Gon's admiration towards Killua.

(actually nothing should in this case) all that this is exactly what happened when dragon ball z kai came out; made it for a general audience (which means more children can watch it) by taking out most of the gore and gritty love that was in the old one. the only thing that made 2011's version different was that they brought it back at a right time and was able to keep it going in comparison to the 90's original, because had it continued, things would probably been different.Saying that though still doesnt hide the fact that we shouldnt play favorites, because this introduced an amazing show to more people and continued it finally for more people to love, and if you want the more in depth version then they can go back to the 90's and catch up to where they stopped in the 2011 version. but on another note, that hiatus has to stop asap
Sekoy the Angel So there is essentially a 10 episode gap in the beginning arcs in terms of development. As episode 52 of the 2011 version "Assault × And × Impact" is equivalent to episode 62 Kurapika × Friends × End of Spiders of the 1999 version. I didn't like the Ant Arc too much, but since I like the Phantom Arc I would agree that I would have liked to see more of it :D

In this one we get the great bgm and everyone worried for Killua and yelling right before he tells the mass murderer that this'll be a death match. It also shows each of their individual reactions with the cool bgm. In the new one they showed all their reactions at the same time and they didn't seem worried about him after he chose to go. In the new one only the heartbeat had a dramatic effect and it looked like his friends didn't care.

I'm so disappointed in how people prefer the 2011 version just 'cause of some "better" animation and the faster pace it has. Say whatever you want, but even though I can enjoy the 2011 version, I just can't respect it. It feels made for children and it lacks the heavy vibe the '99 version had. It feels like the '99 version is One Piece and the 2011 version is Fairy Tail - it's the same impression comparison. If only they had done the entire anime at a good seething pace like the original. Which was pretty much what they did when they took almost 70 episodes with the Chimera Ant arc, they took their time and it paid off. I have no idea why they didn't do that with the first half of the story.

The like the BG in this version and the whole heart crushing scene, i just like how dark this is compared to the 2011 one. But don't get me wrong i like both the 1999 and 2011 versions of HxH

Ill be honest I like 1999 version nore and here's why. I don't know about you but I do enjoy seeing the filler scene taking place in between or rather not filler scenes but extended scenes, more longer than necessary. It brings a good flow rather than cut scene here to there just for the sake of following the manga. Also I prefer the design quality over 2011's. Reason is because this version looks more mature and theres more detailing while as 2011 make every character more kId friendly and before you say anything yes I have seen the chimera ant arc and yes there is blood and some gore on top of the characters looking too childish but point is I am not saying the 2011 version is immature at all. Had 1999 version went that far, I'm willing to bet it would look more gory and bloody. Also 2011 version looks to colorful and flashy which actually kills it for me. Compare both illumis in both versions would you rather say 1999 looks better? I would because it looks more authentic. I mean illumi in all that green looked waaay to bizarre, same for pokkle who wears nearly all pink, some characters have no color variety while others have too much than necessary which also I find 1999 version a great balance. On top of Way too colorful and the lighting was bright, 1999 was darker which actually is a better image tone. I also like hisoka with blue hair better. Idk it look like it fit more properly even if orange was original. Also the music in 1999 was better in my opinion. All in all I find 1999 version to be superior in every aspect. The only thing good about 2011 thats better is the quality of the animation, which is way more fluent. Both voice acting is good but whatever is better depends all on preference. I really do believe people prefer madhouse because of its reputation, flashiness and superior animation or some people can't stand outdated things so any remake is always better if its up to date technology which I find to be ignorant.

I never called "everyone" ignorant. What I said is people who automatically believe that remakes are better than the original, are the ones ignorant. Because half of those people only looked at it first glance, they have not given a proper judgment. However, people who responds that remakes are always better because of reputation of the animation/animators or because they can't stand anything that looks like from the 90's or a lesser time period, remakes automatically win because it's done digitally or something. That's like saying Final Fantasy 13 is better than Final Fantasy 6. People do not disclosed narrow mindedness because they will only play things that are current or some years fall behind. Therefore, they are ignorant because they only play things with good graphics and not in terms of quality. Even in animation Batman the animated series, it's from the 90's and it's animation is still superb and the tone is very dark which is very fitting... Compared to Batman the Brave and the Bold. Which is not too recent but also has great animation but the tone is too cartoonish. Comparing that with HXH The first time they animate it is darker which is more suiting to the atmosphere and setting, then you got the newer versions, which the animation is way better but the pacing and transition between scenes from one thing to another, is actually not smooth because the HXH2011 is trying to follow the manga as closely as possible and cut out the filler time in between each panel (which often times, the transition of scenes in the manga is not as clear; It's the animators job to fill that in smoothly), making it seemed rushed. Though you could say the old HXH extend the minor filler scene too long. It all comes down to preference, but anyways my point is don't let preference or being bias cloud your judgement. Because if anything flashy animation is one thing but isn't tone and atmosphere the most important to any anime? I believe so. (And oh my god I talk too much. I will shut up now.) ((zip))
cmsasuke17 You have the higher ground since you've seen both versions but as a watcher of the 2011 version only, I don't feel that lack of pacing or transition. For example, the whole Yorknew arc was setup with the Greed Island objective. When the whole auction/phatom troupe thing was settled with, the game was brought fourth into first plane again. I don't see how fillers would've benefited these transitions but their enjoyment is anyone's preference as you mentioned. My opinion is that they weren't needed.
I also feel that you're misinterpreting this version's palette with the meaning of what makes something dark. This show is deffinitely dark. Darker than the original? I can't say but today's emeblishment and enhancements don't detract the tone the slightest, I find. It's just a matter of where in the story you're at. At points the show is obviously lighter to cater the audiences but it definitely allows itself to be heavy. I just regret it doesn't fully fledge to mature audiences with a bit more graphical violence but hey.. you can't have everything.

This version seems more better than the 2011 but the 2011 character design is wayyyy better.
@kokoronotomoni I agree, Gon's reaction is quite unexpected but very fitting? He's like a "twisted" good character if you think about it. His best friend just killed someone right but he didn't feel contradicted considering his morals. Also, I do believe this is the beginning of Gon's admiration towards Killua.

CloudyDaze agreeing and dissagreeing here. favoritisim isn't the thing that should render us idiots or not. (actually nothing should in this case) all that this is exactly what happened when dragon ball z kai came out; made it for a general audience (which means more children can watch it) by taking out most of the gore and gritty love that was in the old one. the only thing that made 2011's version different was that they brought it back at a right time and was able to keep it going in comparison to the 90's original, because had it continued, things would probably been different.Saying that though still doesnt hide the fact that we shouldnt play favorites, because this introduced an amazing show to more people and continued it finally for more people to love, and if you want the more in depth version then they can go back to the 90's and catch up to where they stopped in the 2011 version. but on another note, that hiatus has to stop asap
Sekoy the Angel So there is essentially a 10 episode gap in the beginning arcs in terms of development. As episode 52 of the 2011 version "Assault × And × Impact" is equivalent to episode 62 Kurapika × Friends × End of Spiders of the 1999 version. I didn't like the Ant Arc too much, but since I like the Phantom Arc I would agree that I would have liked to see more of it :D

@loveforkillua Yeah lol, I agree that it was less dramatic. In this one we get the great bgm and everyone worried for Killua and yelling right before he tells the mass murderer that this'll be a death match. It also shows each of their individual reactions with the cool bgm. In the new one they showed all their reactions at the same time and they didn't seem worried about him after he chose to go. In the new one only the heartbeat had a dramatic effect and it looked like his friends didn't care.

I'm so disappointed in how people prefer the 2011 version just 'cause of some "better" animation and the faster pace it has.
Say whatever you want, but even though I can enjoy the 2011 version, I just can't respect it. It feels made for children and it lacks the heavy vibe the '99 version had.
It feels like the '99 version is One Piece and the 2011 version is Fairy Tail - it's the same impression comparison.
If only they had done the entire anime at a good seething pace like the original. Which was pretty much what they did when they took almost 70 episodes with the Chimera Ant arc, they took their time and it paid off. I have no idea why they didn't do that with the first half of the story.

This version was much more realistic and better than the 2011 version but it wasn't as dramatic. It all happened just too quick. I wish it was as dramatic as the 2011 version.
Kingsmashman That's what made this version awesome though. The 2011 version was too over dramatic and flashy. The super simple and quick death in this made it all the more disturbing
***** Not really. I liked the dramatic scenes in the 2011 version. It gave you enough time to leave your mouth dropped open as this scene happened, as well as in other scenes. It also made the series more suspenseful and left you at the edge of your seat. The 99 version just wasn't like that.

Why does everyone think the 2011 version is darker. In that one Killua let him try and take it back only for him to collapse from the fatal wound. In this one he he doesn't kill him, he shatters his hope for survival
1999 version is WAY better! Honestly I love both versions but Killua is actually holding THE heart in this one! In the 2011 one he is holding the heart in a BAG, I mean WHERE ON EARTH DOES HE GET THE BAG FROM? HE IS AN ASSASSIN NOT A MAGICIAN!
