    I think it’s interesting Kempy mentioning that the army camp stuff doesn’t work on this generation. I think that’s incorrect. I think it works perfectly. It toughens and bonds the right players and weeds out the wrong players. You put that Brisbane camp through an army camp pre-season and you’ll know exactly who you can build around. Penrith did it, worked okay for them.

    • @BlokeInABar
      @BlokeInABar  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I didn’t say the army stuff doesn’t work. I said I felt he was too old school to relate to the next generation.
      We used to do 6 day army camps now they are no longer than 2 nights.
      Things have changed. And I think all of the coaches from the early 2000s have changed with those times.
      Bellamy is no where near as hardcore as he was 20 yrs ago. Bennett isn’t either. Nor is Madge.
      Army camps still work just not ones as hectic as ones they used to do.

      I used to be in the army, and got to participate in a broncos preseason camp (in Canungra), for one morning when prince and Wallace were tussling for the 7 jumper, and there was nothing they did at that camp they couldn’t have done back at red hill 🤷‍♂️
      They weren’t doing it too tough to say the least, except for the fact they weren’t allowed beers at dinner time 😂

    I couldn’t disagree with the sacking more strongly. I’m a cows fan, and after the cows finished top 4 we had a shocking year and finished 9th or 10th(?). Plenty of chat about Payten’s job. Then, the boys got over the hangover, and possibly themselves, and got back into their work. Finished top 5 the next year (this year).
    Broncos could very well have done what the cows did, but the broncos board did what they’ve done for a long time now and showed no patience and expected the same success they used to enjoy.
    I hope I’m wrong, I really do, but unless they have another coach lined up ready to go, this could go badly.

      14th, 9th, runners up, 12th! Missing the 8, 3 years out of 4 is not good enough! We were getting thrashed towards the back end of the season and Kevvie completely lost the dressing room. If this was any other coach not linked to the Broncos with these results no one would blink an eye lid when they got the sack!

  • @JakeHolzheimer
    @JakeHolzheimer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    it's time for the old boys at the bronx to ZIP it. They are by far the most critical and loud out of all ex player groups. If they truly love the club they would have the clubs priorities always as the most important thing. I honestly believe they endorsed Kevie Walters so bad so they could all infiltrate and relive the glory days. It's insane now too think we won a wooden spoon and appointed a rookie coach to lead us out of that. If it wasn't for the strong roster arguments could be made we'd of been lucky to make it out of the bottom 4 with Walters at the helm.

    I love Madge, but I think this hindsight of “he was actually doing a decent job at the Tigers” is bit of a stretch.
    The biggest issues that Madge had at the Tigers was that he was far too relentless and overtime his ability to get the best out of his players became untenable.
    He also had a horror run of recruiting players, specifically within player circles, players warned other players against being a player under his coaching.
    Tactically he didn’t really have an identity of what he wanted the team to do, season Madge was sacked he started off 0-7 and the big thing was “what is this team’s identity?”
    We can apply what we’ve seen since and talk about how he’s improved. But that’s as a rep coach, which is totally different, it’s short term, so players aren’t being pushed beyond their limits and as Madge says, it’s with the best players in the world.
    I think Madge’s best coaching position is rep football, he’s proven that he’s good at that.

    Interesting chat around Madge and you guys on Bloke when Madge was named NSW coach said he would be great for NSW or NZ too because its shorter camps would work better with his intensity and that a whole season of him, for multiple seasons too, might be too much to handle.
    But now he's the perfect choice for Broncos 🤔
    I don't disagree and he probably is the best replacement, it would just be interesting now to see how he would go as a full time nrl coach again and how the broncos boys would go under him, especially the younger guys like Walsh etc.
    Certainly makes this fascinating for next year regardless 😄
    And i do agree with Kempy that it should just be the best man for the job and the old boys need to just get over it. Shouldn't pick a weaker option just cause he's a Qlder, thats just dumb and illogical imo. But im from NSW so.. 🤷‍♂️😅

      @BlokeInABar Yep he's probably the best replacement all things considered and yeah you're right, coaches do learn and improve and someone like him probably won't be overwhelmed either by coaching a big club like Brisbane. Im just interested to see how it all unfolds now.
      Assuming he gets the job too, i wonder what NSW do now as well. I liked him as NSW coach haha and there weren't a ton of great coaching options floating around when he took over

    Michael Maguire's team results since 2014 - 7th, 12th, 12th, 9th, 11th, 13th. One final series in 6 years. He lost the playing group at Souths & was picking an old Farah over Cook. The following year after sacked at the Rabbits, they made a Prelim & Cook became a rep player.
    The players at the Tigers & Rabbits couldn't stand Madge. He hasn't kept up with the modern game.
    Meanwhile Holbrook has taken the Roosters from the 3rd worst attacking team in the comp to the best attacking team in the comp, in one pre season. & he had the Titans in the finals & in finals contention when he was sacked, with a worse roster.
    Holbrook is a modern day coach. Madge is a specialised 3 - 4 game series coach. Players can't stand him week to week.

    • @jack4215
      @jack4215 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The roster he had at the Rabbits & came 7th, 12th & 12th is absolutely no different to Kevvie missing the 8 in 3/4 years with the roster he had at the Broncos.
      Holbrook has proven he can turn rookies & up & coming players into better players. This year at the Roosters he has proven that he can improve a super star team.
      With the greatest respect coaching a team full of superstars in NSW & NZ in a 3 game series, is not a true reflection of how good of a coach you are. The way Cleary, Robbo & Bellamy transition rookies or unknown players into rep players is a true measure of how good of a coach you are.
      Madge lost 2 different clubs playing groups & hasn't had success in the NRL since 2014.
      Ballin had Broncos as the 2nd best defensive side in the comp in 2023. Pair him with Holbrook who had the Titans firing in attack & taken the Roosters from the 3rd worst attacking team in the comp to the best attacking team in the comp in one preason & you've got a perfect ying & yang combo - who's ego's won't get in the way of each other.
      Madge is Kevvie 2.0.

    Maguire would be mad to take on the broncos job. Origin coach is the best job in the game, work for 5 months a year, 3 games and then go on holidays until February the next year.

    Its sbout time he gets sacked. The older boys from the broncos come out in defense of their mate which is admirablem but the fact is the broncos have only played finals once in the four years Kevie was coach. They also dropped the ball hard in 2022 when they slippef from 4th to 9 with 6 rounds to go. Last year they literally handed the title to penrith with 15 min to go. This year they had a shocking middle part of the year losing 6 in a row. Furthermore, his signing in recent times have been shocking. Bringing in Jayden Hunt, Fletcher Baker and Gogevski. Lets not forget his decision to not play the origin stars in a must win game. The amount of terrible decision that happened with him at the helm proves he is nowhere near NRL level as a coach. In the words of Cobbo he is a great bloke but not a good coach.
