- In spring I wish I could be everywhere. But I have to choose target species, not to loose my head. And this year I want to focus on woodpeckers. I have spend many hours in the forest looking for the white backed woodpecker. This bird is endangered, because down building of old forest.
I was so lucky to find a pair of woodpeckers nesting in a beautiful old forest. It proves that hard work pays of. Time to do bird photography in the spring forest, together with the nikon z9 and nikon 600mm f4 TC.

Even your eyes fit with the camouflage :) Great video, thank you so much for your work!
Thank you for your compliment :)
Beautiful birds. Shame there's very few places in Ireland with such landscapes.
It's funny that you feel that way about the places in Ireland. I often see photos of foggy forests or rugged moors and think it's a shame there's nothing like that here. But then I remind myself that people come from all over the world to visit Zion National Park, which is only a short drive from where I live.
It is so exciting to search for a bird you have never photographed and then find it and get the quality of photographs you did, Trond. For example, I have never photographed the little brown creeper you did so well in this video. Not that I haven't seen it and watched it in the trees, but I have never had a camera with me when I did. That will be a trophy bird for me when I get one. It was the same for the yellow bellied sap sucker. I tried for years to get a photograph of one. Then one spring it all came together and I got several quality photographs of three or four of them. It is like a triumph when that happens. That's what keeps me following your channel, Trond. You recognize the excitement of these once in a lifetime "firsts" and bring them to us in such a real-life manner.
I agree...it is. Thanks for your support as always.
Beautiful shots 👍🏻
During my last trip to the forest, I managed to record and take a few photos of a middle spotted woodpecker.
Thank you! Thats awesome!
Beautiful footage Trond, love the quiet forest.
Hey Trond, thanks for sharing this story about the woodpeckers with us. It's nice to see that you were able to get some great shots and photos. I've also resolved to get some shots and pictures of the great spotted and black woodpecker this year.... it's a bit difficult to get a good shot of the black woodpecker because it looks like they change their main territory quite often.... but I'll keep at it and hope to capture some great moments. Best regards ✌
Thanks for the compliment. Good luck with your woodpeckers 👌
Herlig video og bilder. Kult at du lykkes med å finne Hvitryggspetten 🤩
Fantastic video Trond. The whole process of going out & finding your subject by fieldcraft & then getting the images you were hoping for is a total joy...
Thank you so much for the kind compliment. I agree :)

It is not lucky, the experience bring you in right place at the right time!
Love woodpeckers. I'm fortunate to have them come around my backyard.
I find Forests and Woods some of the most difficult areas to photograph in you did really well to track down the Woodpeckers . Great shots in the end 👍
Hello Trond, again a very nice video from you and speciale I like the music what you have use for this video top work. And the woodpeckers are very nice birds for to take pictures from.

😮😮😮😮
Wearing Camo but with White Hands? I always wear camo gloves because the hands stand out. Particularly on very shy subjects. Nice video. 👍
I have lost my gloves, so I tried to tuck them inside the sleeve :) Thanks :)
wow first to watch
Beautiful video and photos! Thanks for taking us along. How long a lens did you need to get good photos of the woodpeckers at a distance they were comfortable with?
Thank you so much! I used 600mm with the 1,4x teleconverter build in. :)
Smart designer 61
0:55 that sentence sounds familiar to me(cough cough; morten hilmer)... XD
Hi trond nice video and beautifull bird, thanks!!!! I would like to know what brand your camera bag is?best wishes
Do you ever use bird call recordings to find the birds?
Just started to use cornell lab bird ID app. Works great.
Hi, I watched that you had previously used the 500mm F4E FL & also the Z400mm F4.5. I just need your opinion.
I own the Z8 & 400mm F4.5. But I have a chance to switch my 400mm F4.5 for the 500mm F4E FL + FTZ for around USD 1640. I just want a bit more reach and better background separation.
I mainly photograph bigcats (tigers mainly) here in India, dense forest, low light, deep bushes.
Considering weight is not a factor.
Should I do it ? Will it be worth it.
Thank You and your photos with the 500mm F4 looked brilliant and Autofocus worked great even with the FTZ
Hi! I would go for the 500 FL with FTZ. This is a great lense and can also handle 1.4 teleconverter. 400mm is a bit short for me :)
@@trondwestby5264 Thank you so much
Trond, I'm wondering how the Peak Design tripod performed, considering the weight of the lens? The video is the same as all yours. Greetings from Slovenia.
It is good as long as you do not raise it fully. Thanks for watching.
Hi Trond. I'm planning to do videos with my Nikon Z9, could you tell which fluid head you are using? Thanks
Hi! I use Sirui video head
I got z6ii after seeinh jr video and i was disappointed wity performance of the camera for wildlife
Z6 II is not good for wildlife when it comes to autofocus. Unfortunally you have to buy Z8 or Z9 to get that performance :(
