In the ocean of comments asking for more bands I just want to thank you for doing this video on my favorite band/duo. When I was ripping the music from my Dad's old CDs, S&G seemed not that interesting. However upon replaying songs I found I could listen to them over and over again and even the ones I deleted turned out to be gems. IMHO The Boxer is their best and the rest of their songs feel like they all could be a contender for a second best.
I'd just like to appreciate you for a balanced report on their relationship. So much is made of their personal conflicts making it sound like they ended up hating each other. In truth they were just very different people who had a phenomenally successful run together, and then went their separate ways.
Old friends sat on their park bench like bookends ♡ I think they wrote that song at a time when they felt immortal. There's a time in our lives when we feel death is nothing but a legend.
When I was a young Kid in the 70s I used to listen to my mothers LPs. She had early Beatles, etc....and the 1972 Simon and Garfunkel best of album. That album engrossed me. I used to listen on headphones, totally absorbed. When I found out that they had broken up before I had even heard their music I felt a sense of loss that seems beyond an 8 year old. I guess kids feel more deeply than we adults can credit.
Thank you for doing my suggestion! Great job by the way! Here’s my next suggestion: The Who. They had a crazy awesome career, and really solid music. Love your channel! Have a great summer!
Simon and Garfunkel are always near to my heart and headphones. I saw them during the Old Friends tour. Together, they were magical, but Artie had the voice of an Angel. I wish he had chosen better writers for his solo career, though he had some fantastic tunes.
Thank you for covering them! Such a great duo. I was actually supposed to see them live on their last tour, but the show we had was cancelled due to Art's voice issues. It's unfortunate that I will likely never see them live, but their records speak for themselves!
Mr. Beat you just kill it with everything you make. I’d feel lucky to have you as a teacher that helps you understand the truth and has fantastic music taste!
I absolutely love Simon & Garfunkel because my dad was always a big fan. I have all of their original albums on vinyl that my dad bought each one brand new when he was in high school and college. Many of their songs have apecial meanings amd memories tied to them for me.
"Both made each other better! ". Even Paul being a great songwriter, his songs don't touch our hearts without Art. And Art, although having an angelical voice, means nothing without Paul's voice and songs.
This is a great video on an awesome duo! A video on Rush would be great, they are a phenomenal band, but they also had the same 3 members all the way through their legacy until Peart passed away, their instrumental talent is also unbelievable.
It wasn't a mutual break-up in 1970. Paul decided he didn't need Art anymore. With modern recording technology he could do 2 part harmonies by himself. You can hear this in several of Paul's big 70's hits like Me & Julio, Kodachrome and Late In The Evening. But he did reunite with Art for the song My Little Town which was a hit in 1974.
I think this is partially right, but it seems it was primarily because Art was trying to pull the music in one direction and Paul was pulling it in another, and because Art wasn’t writing or even contributing anything but vocal parts by 1970, Paul was sick of compromising if Art cared more about being in movies than working with him. But throughout the 70s and early 80s, all but one of Art’s albums during that time have Paul Simon contributions, so he still worked with him. And Paul Simon said during an interview around the release of “Hearts and Bones” that he felt Art increased the quality of his music. It seems the real reason was they couldn’t stop fighting with each other.
Thank you for this! I am 47 so not old enough to have enjoyed them in their youth but have since I was a child. Saw Paul twice right before he quit touring. The first show was an experience. Some how I scored tickets 6 rows from the stage. By the encore, which was The Boxer, I was close enough to see the individual hairs on his body through the swelling tears in my eyes. Made several life long friendships while his music wafted around us. Think I am going to go listen to "Diamonds on the Souls(soles) of her Shoes" now ❤
WHAAT? I just discovered this channel and imagine my surprise when I heard my favorite history teacher from the internet Mr Beat is narrating! The BEAT in The Beat Goes On is the one and only Mr Beat! And he has a pop music history channel too! SUBSCRIBED!
Rush would be a unique one, seeing that it is a Canadian band, a country that I don’t think you’ve done a video about any of their bands (I could be wrong, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head). Plus they are a great prog rock band, a genre that doesn’t normally get talked of too much.
I understand that they were going to record another studio album together after the 1981 concert in Central Park, but they had yet another falling out, and Paul Simon completed the album as the solo project "Hearts and Bones." This might have been worth mentioning.
April Come She Will brings tears to my eyes every damn time. Of course part of the reason is it is played in Parks and Recreation, my favorite TV show, in a very emotional scene. Bridge Over Troubled Water album has the best melodies though.

What a different video Mr. Beat! Have always loved Simon and Garfunkel ever since I borrowed all of their albums from my Dad growing up. My personal favorite song is Frank Lloyd Wright which is really about Simon’s relation with Garfunkel not the famous architect. Other favorites are Richard Cory and Most Peculiar Man. Still can’t believe that Simon briefly married Carrie Fisher. Would loved to have been a fly on their wall (or maybe not)!?!
@@mattbeatgoeson as someone who has listened to all of their songs, they really are underrated, and that is saying something for a band with PAUL MCCARTNEY HIMSELF
Excellent episode of one of my favorite musical acts - I learned a lot. I was waiting for however mention of their song "My Little Town." I'd say that the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel form the basis of my taste in music. And they both broke up the same year :(
yes I too was confused that there was no mention of My Little Town. That was a new song in the early 80s that was to be the start of a new S&G album but ended up being a one-off new song they both released on solo albums. Paul played it live on his last couple of tours.
Thank you for sharing. I am a big fan of these talented artists and always wondered what the issues were between them. I can understand now why they kept it a secret. That's embarrassing. Participating in toxic relationships is just a waste of time. Life's too short.
Something I read in one of the books about them: They signed a contract early on which would split all live concert proceeds as 60/40; Sixty percent to Simon and fort percent to Garfunkel instead of the customary 50/50 split. I don't know why Art ever signed it or why Paul felt it was okay to offer his then friend Art, a lesser amount for their concert performances as Paul would still receive 100% of all of his songs he wrote, but I feel that this was probably one of the first wedges early on that indicated that Paul never viewed them as equals. p.s. Good video! In the late '60's, I would have called "Simon and Garfunkle" my favorite band. Since then, I have veered into Hillbilly Music, with lots of pedal steel, but I still greatly enjoy many of "Simon and Garfunkle's" songs. The biggest musical influence that "Simon and Garfunkle" had in my circle of friends, was Paul's use of finger-picking the guitar, instead of just strumming the guitar. --- Finger-picking resulted in songs, sounding much more MUSICAL, while strumming sounded boooooooring. --- In the early 70's, Simon's finger-picking songs were the RAGE among my friends. --- About 15 years later, the first guitar tune I taught my eldest son, was "Scarborough Fair", my son LOVED IT, and then he continued to forge his own path. --- Ironically, one of my favorite "S&G" songs, is STILL the not-finger-picking "Richard Cory". Rock
"The Boxer" was S&G's best, imho. I stopped into a bar after taking a final exam when I was a Jr in college. The first time I heard it played on the jukebox, I realized it was the greatest song I'd ever heard. 55 years later my opinion hasn't changed. I've seen Simon in concert a number of times. My son first heard Paul Simon in concert when he was in the womb. Now he's 42. Another great concert: Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. That one was good.
What do you think of Art Garfunkels ability to sing? Mapmaker: I stated years ago before he ended up losing his voice that his singing voice had been severely damaged by his drug addition to nicotine. Studies have shown that people who are addicted to nicotine in the long run are more cranky defensive, argumentative, and most of all irritable. For example: 1)Garfunkel threw a backstage hissy fit when a staffer couldn’t instantly produce a tissue for his nose. Offered a paper towel, Garfunkel screamed, “I said a tissue!” - and threw it back,The tale sounds plausible in light of his cranky behavior while Reading poetry at a show at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in upstate Verona, Garfunkel stopped twice because a developmentally challenged person in the front row was making noise. Finally, he said, “I’m as sympathetic as anyone to the handicapped, but I’m trying to do a show.” A minder pushed the wheelchair-bound person out of the theater, leaving some in the audience feeling like they should have walked out, too. Another good example of Garfunkels lack of maturity and defensiveness- During one song, Paul Simon reported I think it was The Boxer, I made a mistake over when to come in, and it threw Artie off for a second,” he said. “But it was an accident; it wasn’t intentional. So later, we’re singing Feelin’ Groovy, and suddenly Art just stops singing at the part that goes ‘Life, I love you’, and I’m just left there by myself, trying to figure out what to do. I assumed it was another mistake - no big deal. “But then at intermission, Art comes up to me and says, ‘You tried to make me look like a fool on The Boxer,’ and I said, ‘No, Artie, it was a mistake. Mistakes happen, just like you forgot to do Life, I love you.” “That’s when he looked me in the eye and said, ‘I didn’t forget. I just wanted you to see what it feels like to be made a fool of’.” What should Garfunkel had done in that situation- It never ceases to amaze me that no matter how rich or how famous someone is they often can turn out to be the most immature schmucks on earth. Garfunkel could have waited till after the show and checked in with simon and asked him if he was ok since simon made a mistake during singing the boxer-simon then could explain it was mistake-then garfunkel could explain how it made him feel angry. Then what- Well then I would ask why would a Paul Simon mistake make Garfunkel angry? Has Paul Simon ever intentionally set out to embarrass Art Garfunkel? And what you’ ll find is that there no EVIDENCE to support such a accusation that Paul Simon has ever tried to undermine art garfunkel-ever!!!!!! Paul Simon has always made it clear publicly that he is very grateful and appreciative of the contribution Art Garfunkel contribution to his career. He also has made it clear that he not only cares about him and would almost do anything for their friendship. But Paul Simon has said he didn’t care for Art Garfunkels solo albums? Mapmaker:He was only referring to his taste regarding music. However I disagree with Paul Simon-I think Art Garfunkels solo albums on Columbia records are some of the most beautiful records of 1970’ and 1980’s. But thats just my taste in music, it doesn’t mean I dislike Paul Simon. Paul Simon also has stated that he thought a lot of the songs Garfunkel recorded in his solo career aren’t as intelligent as he is. Mapmaker: I also disagree with Paul Simon on this-Art Garfunkel has recorded a lot of intelligent songs Wooden Planes,Sometimes when I’m Dreaming, Crying in My Sleep, Bright Eyes, Scissors Cut, Skywriter this is just to name a few. What do you think of Paul Simons solo albums? Well for the most part i think their fantastic-he’s a brilliant song writer However there have been some songs he’s written that aren’t to my taste or I would have done differently. For example- Mapmaker:Well take the his last few albums Paul Simon recorded Your The One,Surprise,So Beautiful and So What, and Stranger to Stranger. The songs are really beautiful written and musicians are fantastic however Paul Simon did not make any effort to put vocal harmony on any of the songs. This just isn’t Paul Simon by the way,but simon just singing solo on a whole album is boring and leaves the songs on these albums lacking a certain color and flavor. Do you think he should have gotten together with garfunkel on those albums? Absolutely not -Garfunkel has ruined his voice with nicotine and cannabis. Paul Simon is very talented when it comes to putting together his songs he could have gone out their in world like he did with Graceland and found singers to harmonize with, and marriage them with the sons he’s created. Whats the future of Simon and Garfunkel? I don’t know and personally if they never sing together i could care less their contribution in music is timeless. But it would be nice if Garfunkel went over and apologized to simon. Do you think that will ever happen Not really sadly I don’t believe he’s that mature.
@@mattbeatgoeson I hope you continue to do the ones you enjoy the most instead of doing the most popular choice. Not only is it more of a curveball, it exposes a wider audience to artists that aren’t just the “Tarantinos” or “Spielbergs”

Another good example of Garfunkels lack of maturity and defensiveness-
During one song, Paul Simon reported I think it was The Boxer, I made a mistake over when to come in, and it threw Artie off for a second,” he said.
Mistakes happen, just like you forgot to do Life, I love you.”
“That’s when he looked me in the eye and said, ‘I didn’t forget. I just wanted you to see what it feels like to be made a fool of’.”
What should Garfunkel had done in that situation-
It never ceases to amaze me that no matter how rich or how famous someone is they often can turn out to be the most immature schmucks on earth.
Garfunkel could have waited till after the show and checked in with simon and asked him if he was ok since simon made a mistake during singing the boxer-simon then could explain it was mistake-then garfunkel could explain how it made him feel angry.
Then what-
Well then I would ask why would a Paul Simon mistake make Garfunkel angry?
Mapmaker: I also disagree with Paul Simon on this-Art Garfunkel has recorded a lot of intelligent songs
Wooden Planes,Sometimes when I’m Dreaming, Crying in My Sleep, Bright Eyes, Scissors Cut, Skywriter this is just to name a few.
What do you think of Paul Simons solo albums?
Well for the most part i think their fantastic-he’s a brilliant song writer
However there have been some songs he’s written that aren’t to my taste or I would have done differently.
For example-
Mapmaker:Well take the his last few albums Paul Simon recorded Your The One,Surprise,So Beautiful and So What,
and Stranger to Stranger.
Do you think that will ever happen
Not really sadly I don’t believe he’s that mature.
Halfway through the video I was like “this sounds like me beat!” And then I saw the name of the channel
Can u do elvis then the white stripes
Please do a Brief History on KOrn, that would be awesome
could you do a breif history on Blur
Great suggestion!
@@mattbeatgoeson love you 😘
An unexpected surprise, but a welcome one.
Yeah not many suggested I cover them, so I was a bit worried to make it.
@@mattbeatgoeson I hope you continue to do the ones you enjoy the most instead of doing the most popular choice. Not only is it more of a curveball, it exposes a wider audience to artists that aren’t just the “Tarantinos” or “Spielbergs”
