I like how Mikael said he wanted to do a concept album "maybe with occult content", and then they go and release "Ghost Reveries", which has occult themes in it. Pretty cool to see these ideas come to fruition.
He was right, up to that point Ghost Reveries was there best work. Still one of my favorite albums of all time. I know a lot of people have a nostalgic loyalty to Blackwater Park but I didn't start listening to Opeth until Damnation and Deliverance, and so I listened to Ghost Reveries before Blackwater. Both amazing albums but I still favour Ghost Reveries over Blackwater Park.
I keep coming back to this "wholesome" video to watch Mikael vomit perfect vocals and then shake his head side to side to the beat like a schoolchild (5:04 - 5:12). Every time, I end up watching the whole documentary again because it's so wholesome (pun intended).
9:10 I didn't put much stock in his comments at the time, but with hindsight, so amazing to hear Mikael describe his initial brainstorming for what would become my all-time favorite Opeth record. And boy, did they ever make good on his promise.
At 9:15....I really wish Mikael had've pursued that Black Metal idea because I think Opeth could have produced some great Black Metal. Personally I think Orchid and Morningrise have a far more Black Metal feel to them than Death Metal. And as to their current sound...I just think of all the really good atmospheric and depressive BM out there, I really feel Opeth could have pressed in that direction....who knows maybe one day
4:30 times change hehe. Instead of being a one off thing, it was a harbinger of things to come. Would of loved to hear the "beautiful black metal" album too. I remember him mentioning that in interviews during this time period. We never got it but I think he got what he wanted with Ghost Reveries because its a beautiful yet brutal album, one of Opeth's best.
2:10, facts. Thom Yorke of Radiohead should have sang for Opeth (if they can make it happen). I always wish Blur and Opeth can battle for which band/music is better, Brit Pop vs Prog Rock.
Opeth is a fantastic metal band, they incorporate death metal, progressive, a touch of goth in my opinion and other bits of music elements. Each album is dark and unique. DAMNATION is one of those albums that is dark and beautifully made; perfect to listen only at night whether be at the beach or anywhere, even at home with very dim lights; it brings that dark and beautiful ambiance.
the quality of his death grunts has declined and I think he is aware of that.I don't think that he woke up one day and decided to erase all the death metal stuff just because he doesn't dig it anymore.everybody gives him shit from giving them up but they don't realize that he's probably rather do that than deliver some mediocre or sub-mediocre death metal vocals just for the sake of doing that. I understand him, fans are never going to be pleased regardless of what you do, so fuck that.
These series of videos are an amazing documentary about how to make a real piece of art, a masterpiece from great creators. Difficulties, immense creativity, no boundaries and doing what you feel you must do. It´s incredible, thanks you all.
I get a feeling that perhaps Mikael's relationship with Steven helped push Peter out. Almost like a bromance that perhaps made Peter jealous? The way Mikael looks at Steven, like a child looking to a parent for approval. It's interesting to see. You can see the awe that Mikael has for Steven.
I don't see that at all. I think Mikael sees Steven as a mentor regarding song writing/production and a peer as an overall musician. I don't think Mikael ever saw Peter as a peer, he's said in interviews that Peter would bring him musical ideas but they weren't any good. If anything, Peter probably got tired of it being the "Mikael show" rather than a collaborative band.
4:32 - 5:30 Play this section to Mikael over & over again & remind him of what made Opeth great. They should at least incl. some Death Metal songs on new albums. Their recent albums have been too mellow - Bring Back The Death Metal!
nah i Think fans like you , have aged poorly. the band have progressed and moved on. so should you. but you havent. they have done like 10 deathmetal albums. of course they will change and do somethig else.
Dannje saglind yes they moved on, and I haven’t said that’s a bad thing, I love their later albums, hell, in cauda venenum it’s probably one of my favourite albums along with ghost reveries and damnation. I was just making a comment in how their own perception about Opeth changed, and yes the quote did aged poorly because they’re no longer a death metal band, but I don’t consider that to be a bad thing. Don’t be too quick to make assumptions about people you don’t know
@@sebastian7608 Sure but usually people who say comments like your say it with a negative connotation and with elitism towards the contemporary Opeth. Their perception of who they are changed, sure, that doesn't automatically mean its aged poorly. It just changed.
@@dannje7878 he literally said nothing negative about the band. It 's just the comment aged poorly because they transitioned their sound which isn't a bad thing at all.
@@xXAscendingPhoenixXx He's saying the "i don't think we're gonna do this again" quote didn't age poorly cause they're not really even a death metal band anymore
Do some songs like "the Grand conjunction" with clean vocal mixed with aggressive vocals. This is what defines opeth. Loved your work on deliverance also with still Life one of the best albums. Love you guys
Someone might have butchered the master, or it couldve been Steven Wilson who knows. But they did release a remaster a few years ago. Personally I think there's something off about it but the vocals do sound better.
I love how the credits at the end are played over "Ending Credits".
Man, you guys are quick ! Can’t get anything past you
...and Closure doesn't exactly close.

8:03 Steven Wilson - "It's gonna be a real kind of watershed" 🤔🤔🤔
Simply one of the best bands on the planet
yes
Steve Wilson mentioned these albums are going to be a watershed for opeth from 08:02 to 08:06.
the band releases an album called watershed later on.
I was going to say the same about that comment of Steven hahaha
Duuuude I knowwwww
Thanks, that explains my confusion xD
7:13 "shit we didn't get that, can you do it again?"
5:09 I'm likely gonna picture that in my head every time I listen to that song now.
Hahahahaha

Couldn't agree more. Opeths best album for sure, one of my favorite albums of all time. Ghost Reveries doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
5:06 A talent among talents. Inhuman.

His growl in Wreath is the most mesmerizing in the world

Mikael was so adamant about Opeth being a death metal band then. Look how times have changed

The vocals from 6.35 and forward are crazy.
Luv the ending credits
realising now that I'm rewatching this after a lot of years that Steven Wilson is wearing a Dillinger Escape Plan t-shirt here.

+j. cardoso "A Fair Judgement" off of Deliverance
Steve Wilson seems to think metal fans are as closed minded as Porcupine Tree fans are.
Musical snobbery 😩
mikes vocals sound better here than on the actual album, i dunno what happened with the mix but i fee the vocals on deliverance sound kinda flat

Damnation is a masterpiece.
Hey why jan (opeth keyboardist) didn't contribute in this album
The people in this comment section seem to not understand that people might change over the span of a decade lol
i hope that black metal album didnt turn into ghost reveries and theres still hope one day
It was actually. It isn't exactly a black metal album but it's still an occult based death metal concept album.
hope leaves
''damnation is something i think we never gonna do again'' oh poor 2002 mikey
They didn't do a whole soft only album ever again, so he was right.
Context of what's being said, is important 😉
