Yeah, I don't really understand the freak out over it. The TM.6 arrival/departure card was a thing for quite a while and sure it has been "temporarily suspended" for a few years now by air and a bit less for land/sea entries but it really was just a minor inconvenience. Realistically, I could see the eTA being used to crack down on those doing border runs as some people do make use of the sleepier land borders with Laos to avoid scrutiny. Functionally though, I can't imagine that there won't be some physical option as well but I'd argue there could be a bit of carrot and stick action whereby you may be penalized directly or indirectly for not getting the eTA in advance.
Last time I entered Thailand I barely did any waiting for the immigration officer. There was a huge group ahead of me, and the queues were getting thick. Eventually, the officers just started basically waiving people through. All I had to do was hand over my passport and look at the camera. No questions asked or fingerprints scanned. Took about 30 seconds total. I assume the ETA would be helpful for those who "spend too much time in Thailand" from being awkwardly and inconvenienced being denied entry having to be detained then get flight out.

ETA. The noose is tightening. This is another way to track your movement. It will eventually restrict your ability to go anywhere, unless you have "Special Access".
On Dogs: breeds are not the issue. It's either the owners OR likely in this case, dogs suffer mental issues as they age including their own form of dementia, which often manifest in aggression due to the confusion, not recognizing people and places they have been in and around all their lives.
Well the breeds ARE an issue, statistically with one particular breed being responsible for bites causing deaths. Not only in Thailand but around the world.
Dog breeds are absolutely the issue. Some are breed specifically to hunt, kill or fight. The attack instinct and physical attributes making them ideal killing machines is always there just under the surface. It doesnt take much to trigger it. It is nonsense that attacks are unfortunate accidents, that the victim is to blame or the bad owner probably mistreated the dog. It is the same breeds involved in serious attacks and deaths over and over again. Plenty of people suffer minor injuries from territorial soy dogs but being attacked by a much bigger and more powerful breed intent on actually killing you is something completely different. Few adults could survive this. If there is more than 1 dog than you have no chance. If you own a killer dog that also has mental issues making it more dangerous and unpredicatable I think you know what needs to be done.

@@BangkokZed Sorry. But a visa does not grant you permission to enter a country. The Permission To Enter does. A visa says you've been reviewed and are eligible. But even if you have a visa you can be denied entry. The ETA only gathers the same information about you that Immigration gathers when they scan your passport.
@@johnnielson4341 Both visa and ETA grants permission to enter the country at an immigration checkpoint where your ETA or visa reviewed by immigration authorities and the entry granted or denied. ETA upon arrival can be denied too, just look at Thai social media regrading K-ETA (Korean ETA) many Thais are being turned back from Korea with valid ETA.
Merci beaucoup
so, show your QR code at an automated gate? What's to stop a terrorist or someone banned from Thailand from getting an ETA under someone else's name and just skipping on through immigration without being seen by an Immigration Agent?
There are facial recognition cameras on the e gates. I have used them in UAE
How would the ETA stop over stayers lol
Nobody suggested it would
Fact
The ETA will not prevent the Chinese from working in Thailand, they use to come to Thailand and work, when they had to get a visa before.
Yes. It was a rather odd inclusion in that story. Plenty of people from all sorts of countries gaming the system and working illegally.
if an eta includes finger prints as in the states at arrival then they only have to be caught once to be refused entry
Indonesia allows you to scan passport without a QR code.

i just went thru cgk airport (jakarta) last month. arrival in "the big durian" really difficult compared to thailand. first had to navigate bad signage and worse directions to pay the RP 500,000 entry fee. nothing in bkk. they tried to pretend cash only to scam a bad exchange rate. i insisted on credit card as i had done my research. so they finally brought the machine out from under the counter. next was pre-immigration where i had to submit my info and get a qr code on my phone. very cumbersome with sketchy airport wifi! then got grilled by an immigration officer with a bad attitude who insisted on seeing my hotel booking, flight out of indonesia, funds in my wallet.... and me a decently dressed canadian senior not some rag tag young backpacker. 30 day stay only allowed! the last dozen times entering thailand am thru in minutes but cgk was at least an hour. ground transport out of the airport is also so much more difficult and costly compared to bkk. google maps is hopelessly out of date for cgk. there is public transport but requires a jak card - strictly no cash allowed. bkk there is the skytrain or airport buses with lots of friendly help - cheap & so easy!
How soon before returning to Thailand do we need to do the electronic visa?
A specific timing hasn’t been announced but 3 days was mentioned in an early article
Tim, Can an America get a 60 day visa easy?
You can pre-apply for a tourist visa or arrive visa exempt for 60 days. Why bother with a visa?!
Indonesia is introducing a kind of automated system. In a near future I think it will work well.

Good day Tim. Just an idea to consider. Viewer interaction may be an interesting idea. Let viewers who actually live in Thailand send interesting pictures of their lifestyle. Maybe a pic of their house and garden or anything pertaining to their village. Love the show!!
I used to work offshore. Many times seen me waiting in Sri Lanka for my next ship but sometimes it was cancelled and I went straight to the airport and flew back to Thailand. The ETA pre flight would never have worked. The UK demanding 30 days? What about emergency flights back home, necessary last minute flights and whatever else. Problems problems problems. I have lost the appetite for travel now. You can literally be on tour and requirements are changing here and there. ETA, arrival tax? The only certainty is the constant need to scratch the head.
Be assured there will be ‘traditional’ methods of arrival channels. This is just the way of the world now. If not now, it will happen soon enough.

What do you guys think of the thai baht so strong? Where is this going? I read is 13 per cent more of April to us dollars
Yes. Not good for those of us earning USD.
No one complained when the dollar was riding high against the baht. The US Federal bank reduced their interest rate by 0.5 % so the value of the dollar was bound to reduce against the baht and some other currencies. The baht will climb even higher against the dollar if the Fed reduce by another 0.5% this Nov. The Thai central bank just need to reduce their own interest rate in Oct (like many other countries have) and that should help. Unfortunately they insist on sticking to 2.5 %.

how are you visa exempt if you need to get a non-visa in advance instead of just getting a visa on arrival?
Good lord. I’ve explained it a hundred times. Clearly I have failed to make it clear.
@@timnewtontoday No, you made it clear. Some just don't want to accept
It’s not a visa, Singapore has been doing it for years, you go online give your name, passport number flight and accomodation details, then when you arrive you can use the automated gates rather than fronting up to a grumpy immigration officer
Tim, you completely missed the point. Instead of just showing up with your passport, you need to submit and get permission PRIOR to arrival....exactly the same as a visa, but different only in process and semantics than getting a visa.

Presumably you'd fill it out at home/public library then you'd print off the QR code. Common sense would also dictate that there will be a physical option similar to what is used in Japan or the old TM.6 arrival/departure card that people can fill out upon arrival but it may slow down your entry.

RE: ETA & QR Codes - WHY the almost Universal belief that everyone has a mobile phone..?? For about 10 years, I had a cell phone for work, then I retired and NOW. a land line does everything. I quit the mobile phone update dance and got a land line phone. That and a desktop do everything.
Times change. You choose not to have a mobile phone, ok, that is your choice. Expect life to be a bit harder though, due to your own insistence on being part of a tiny minority. You will have to print your QR code. Enjoy 😅

Best way to think of the ETA as an online TM6. Can’t see what all the fuss is about!
Given that you get to avoid people waiting for an immigration officer, I am happy to spend the 5 minutes prior to arrival
The last 2 times I came to Thailand, they were not using the TM6 card at all. So that's not something that has been required until they started talking about this stupid ETA. And you think everyone lives online. Well, many people don't live online,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
@@ddyeo503 be assured there will be queues for people who can’t access the ETA, as in countries that already use similar systems. Glad to see that you’re already online.

Today when you come in visa exempt you present your passport and they give you an entry permit stamp. The ETA is just electronically doing exactly the same thing.

@@genericdeveloper3966 I know it sounds like a biased statement to love my dog. Believe it or not, all animals respond in kind to their owners and those around them.
ETA RISKS BEING A Dissaster as with covid make it all digital then fxxx it up with paper copies when you arrive cos thais need it on paper 3 copies😂
