I disagree with many things in the High Republic, but I do agree it is the only time we should be seeing Jedi with extravagant lightsabre designs. Function should always come before form with any weapon, of course.
I really wish. One of my main complaints about Disney+ SW so far is that the production looks so toned down, only a fraction of what it should actually look like. The sabers all look like they’re strictly buildable in Galaxy’s Edge, instead of going for more creative and outlandish looking Hilts with more personality.
Tbf not a lot of effort was put into designing the sets of the original trilogy either. Often times props and constumes were whatever they could find at the thrift store. I get what you mean though. Star Wars concept art is almost always awesome and i wish more of it got into the final product

I want to say, in a Chekov’Gun kind of way, having to use the force to turn it on meant someone else could turn it off. That’s speculation on my part, though.
They didnt choose based on what is established in prior canon. They chose the designs that would be easiest to make into a hasbro glowstick and use on set. If they still made the blades entirely with cgi and didnt use light up sabers on set they could be a lot more creative with the hilt designs.
I like these designs but I also think some were a bit much for the characters. I think the marble lightsaber would have been distracting on indara. These are definitely designs they should make use of in future though. The marble blade and sith rib saber could probably work in dawn of the jedi, as the designs feel super ancient.

Eh, designs are hit and miss, concept artists often seem to forget these days that people actually have to hold those things and do choreographed fights with them. That's always been somewhat of an issue with lightsaber props. The big problem of The Acolyte is the abysmally badly conceived story and awful/nonexistent direction given to actors though resulting in a schizophrenically paced, nonsensical story held together by a string of insane coincidences and inconsistent character behavior, combined with the team's self-evident contempt for the source material and those who enjoy it. It could have been made for half the cost with generic uninteresting saber props but good writing would have led to a positive reaction regardless. A New Hope was made for about one fifth the money (adjusted for inflation). I really want anyone reading this to spend a few minutes thinking on that, this show, which can't even meet the bare minimum tests for competency in basically any field, cost five times as much as one of the best individual movies in the entire franchise and the one which laid out the groundwork for everything that came afterwards.
