SIRxMARCUS why did blown oil seal cause misfire? I've some oil found around two spark plugs and I have hesitation and inability to accelerate beyond 4000rpm. Can't go any faster than 120kmh

In my car, i had a valve cover oil seal fail around 100000 km. Somehow i eventually decided to bring it to the mechanic and have the valve cover opened, what was inside cleaned up and the seal replaced since it also had noisy lifters and once the engine went warm most oil started leaking and getting onto the converter making things smelly. Well, the mechanic also had to remove the coilpack in the process and found that oil was starting to get around the connectors and sparkplugs (coil-on-plug design) and cleaned everything up. The engine could have started misfiring any moment once enough oil built up inside that area. And the lifters became quiet again too. All of this costed 80 bucks, a new converter and coil pack could have been a lot more expensive than that.

Experiencing the same issue too. Engine runs fine until you get to higher rpms, then it throws a check engine misfire. Compression is good, fuel injectors good, spark plugs and gaps good, coil packs good. Mass air flow sensor is good (although these are known to fail without throwing codes. Fuel injected engines have these things called coilpacks. The computer talks to them and tells them when to fire instead of a mechanical distributor. Much more reliable and much more efficient system, but more annoying to work on.
They call them coil packs because instead of a wire going down to the spark plug, it's a long spring, or coil if you will

Auto Care Advice: Misfires and Their CausesIgnition Misfire
An ignition system problem is one of the most common reasons for an engine to misfire. As the spark plugs, ignition cables, distributor cap and rotor, and ignition coil wear over time, their ability to transfer the needed spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture inside the combustion chambers becomes compromised. In the early stages, the spark will only be weaker and the actual misfire will be subtle. As the ignition components continue to wear, the misfire will intensify and the combustion process can be interrupted completely. This will cause a severe jerk or shock in the operation of the engine (the engine may even backfire through the air intake system, producing a loud "pop").Lean Misfire
The lean misfire is another common reason for an engine "miss"-this is due to an imbalanced air/fuel ratio (too much air/too little fuel). Since an engine needs a richer (more fuel) mixture for a smooth idle, this problem may be more noticeable when the vehicle is idling. The lean misfire may decrease or disappear as the engine speed increases because the efficiency of the volumetric flow into the combustion chambers increases dramatically. This is one reason why a vehicle gets better mileage on the freeway than in the city. An EGR valve that is stuck open, a leaking Intake Manifold Gasket, a defective Mass Air Flow Sensor, a weak or failing fuel pump, or a plugged fuel filter are some of the many causes for a lean misfire.Mechanical Misfire
Mechanical problems can also cause an engine to misfire. Common causes of a mechanical misfire are worn piston rings, valves, cylinder walls, or lobes on a camshaft; a leaking head gasket or intake manifold gasket; damaged or broken rocker arms; defective fuel injectors (and/or the electronics that control them); and a slipped or incorrectly-installed timing belt or timing chain. Generally, this type of misfire has more of a "thumping" feel to it. It is usually noticeable regardless of engine speed; in fact, it may even intensify as the engine speed increases.Powertrain Misfire
Sometimes, the engine has nothing to do with a misfire. One common cause for "jerky" performance that feels like a misfire is a problem in the transmission and its ability to properly up- or down-shift. If the misfire occurs during higher speeds, it could be a problem with the operation of the overdrive gear or a chattering clutch in the Lockup Torque Converter. If the vehicle jerks or feels like it is "missing" during deceleration, it could be due to harsh transmission downshifts, badly warped rotors, out of round brake drums, and/or sticking brake pads or brake shoes.Make sure that you have the vehicle properly inspected in order to determine the root cause of the misfire. Entire engines have been replaced to solve a wrongly perceived mechanical misfire problem that was actually rooted in the transfer case, transmission, driveshaft, or front/rear differential.

spirit Rx7 Well if you "LOOK" carefully on the steering wheel you'll see the "MAZDA" emblem on it. So that's how "I know". Which is not really knowing it's called being observant. The tachometer doesn't tell me much because I DON'T know the model. If i observe that it was a mazda doesnt automatically mean ill know what the vehicle is. And thanks for the answer though.

Marcos Mendez you are right there is a trailing and leading for each rotor only thing is if you have more rotors such as the 20b engine which has 3 rotors 6 spark plugs you won’t always have 4 plugs. There is even a 4 rotor called the 26b and it has 8 plugs

My shit hits 4,000-5,000 rpm when going 30 miles per hour. not every time. Not sure if thats a missfire. the only way to stop the loud noise it makes is by coming to a complete stop. also if i let go of the gas when it makes this loud as noise it stars slowing doing so fast as if i were slightly hitting the breaks... very dangerous because it slows down really fast and im not hitting the breaks so the person behind me doesn't know that im slowing down fast, to remedy this i have to leave my foot at the gasspedal so it will continue at a steady miles per hour. This happens even at 30mph actually very offten if i acceleatere too quickly. so im crusing down the street at 5,000rpm at 30mph XD!

  • @theraildynasty_

This is not a piston misfire but a lost in compression I think, rotary engines loose compression overtime when apex seals start to wear out, I don't know whether rotors misfire, this is only true if this car has a rotary engine, which I think it does because it sounds like a rotary engine and the dash looks like an Rx8 dash to me 🤔.......

it is the the coils but i'd also get the shutter valves looked at "ssv" or even known as the runner valve on the intake manifold look and see if all is secured and tight. also while you are looking in that area, might as well look at the gaskets for the manifold as for they could be crumbling away. if you already done this and replaced the gaskets and the runners, i'd also check the e-crank and the maf sensor and also check all your grounds. it could be a fault wire touching metal somewhere in the engine bay. if you have done this too replace the intake breather tube. sometimes in time. on where the tubes go they seem to tear a bit and hot air seeps through the little crack which makes your car run poor, i know this isnt the situation on your part but this is just some helpful pointers to look at in the future if the car would ever fault on you once again. another helpful pointer to know, if you noticed your car idle under 1000 then thats a side seal blown and would need a whole engine rebuild. the reason for this to happen as it this car revs high, which makes every other object move at that same speed of the car and with that that makes heat, and as all rotor heads know rotaries love heat and they drink oil. if any other questions about this car please feel free to reply on this comment and i'll try to help you with your issue. i hope this sums up your situations
