    Cal, how do you keep your knives sharp, I've tried all manner of sharpners and have limited success, cheers bud Chris in Cornwall 🎣

      I use a diamond steel mate. I also like knives with a thin blade, they’ll stay sharper for longer 👍🏼

    Useful tips and techniques. Do you bleed the fish and also take the gills out straight after dispatching ? Some think the meat can be tainted by the blood and take on a bit of an ammonia taste. Noticed this a bit with trout.

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is best to bleed the fish yeah. I didn’t with this one and you can probably tell in the video. As far as an ammonia taste, I don’t find that with bass personally but with other fish yes.

    Great video Cal. Would you recommend descaling any fish?

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always descale them yeah. It makes it easier to fillet them plus it prevents your knife from going blunt quicker.

    Hi Cal great video, as always, thanks for sharing. Any particular filleting knife you would recommend? I have a few but yours looks much better, razor sharp and flexible !

      @FISHINGWITHCAL  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers 👍🏼 I use Victorinox knives most of the time. They’re not too expensive and the blades last well.

    Hi, thanks for sharing this info as I have really struggled filleting bass, especially around the rib cage. My question is over your knife, which one do you have as it seems a lot sharper than mine and how do you keep it so sharp ? Many thanks and tight lines.

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s all just about practice mate. The more you do it, the easier it is. I use a Victorinox filleting knife, they’re not very expensive. I use a steel to sharpen my knives, I only ever hand wash them too, don’t put them in a dishwasher or they’re go blunt. 👍🏼

      @@mickwalsh8136 Another blank, I'm proud to say! Proud, yep, cus it isn't dampening my spirits, and I'm still mad keen. Tbf, I was living in the Midlands up until November 2022, so it is all still relatively new since coming down to Cornwall. But just being out there, by the sea, is pure food for the soul. Once I do catch, it will just be the cherry on the cake!

    Come on cal we aren’t in America I’ve fished for bass since the early 70s and it’s usually chefs who started this Americanism I know over there they do have freshwater bass not here be proud of our bass not sea bass 👍😀

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha. I never refer to bass as seabass usually. I feel the same way about it as you do. I just wrote seabass in the title because the video could be viewed elsewhere that’s all.

    You make it look so easy. Fortunately I have years of experience filleting fish, so it isn’t a bother to me. Keep these good videos coming Cal, I enjoy them.
