Just want to say this is THE BEST video for this thing out there! I know this because I have watched them all... No time is wasted, very clear and to the point with a good balance of talk to play. Also it's nice when someone actually pays attention to the quality of their vocals and enables captions as well. Thank you for!
I’m committed to Mashine now, but I can really see how useful this product can be for the right person. It’s got a place in the studio, out of a backpack, or in a live setting. Thanks for doing all the investigating for us!
Nah bruh... this ain't the way to go. You're gonna get cataracts looking at that little-ass screen! If this thing don't sell... Roland will abandon it by mid 2022. Get an MPCone for the same price, bigger screen, better & much simpler workflow. Facts!
Friendly heads up to all: An easier way to set the shuffle (swing) setting for the current part you're working on is to press the Edit button + either of the octave buttons to go into measure settings, then turn the dial clockwise 3 clicks past Step Length and you will see the shuffle setting. Updating it here also updates the clip setting.
Could you do a video on how to add volume in the final Mix and mastering phase, after you've finished adding EQ, Compression, and the limiter has been set?
Thank you for the great video. I like the overall positivity you are giving it without leaving out necessary criticisms. I pre-ordered one and am glad to have picked it up early on. I also have a Maschine Plus [my first Native Instruments purchase] and I feel like both have their advantages and cons. In my opinion the Maschine Plus feels more premium and to my ears sounds a little higher quality. But I find the Maschine workflow very difficult to get into and requires a lot of workarounds, plus Native Instruments [at least upon release] was kind enough to not provide a manual either physical or digital when it really needs one. I really prefer the overall workflow of the MV-1, and while I agree with the general issues with the lack of an undo feature and the unfortunate screen, at least in Canada this is almost half the cost of the Maschine plus or an akai Live 2. If they keep updating it with more useful features then I think there is a lot of potential for this to become a beloved device for many. But as it stands I do love it and find it is a very useful DAWless style device.
Thanks sanjay, that was great, can you sample from vinyl or I phone to create the old school sample based hip hop or breakbeat rave music from the 80s & 90s.
Where do you get all that money to buy gear?. Your 2nd studio is up..how many client's did you have with your first studio?where do you get all that money?
Great breakdown. And I really like the use of timestamps. Went through everything so that someone can get started quickly. How do you use Grooveboxes? Are they an idea source for you, or a great live performance and jamming tool?
The real question here is this, maschine or MPC? As someone who is guitarist/keyboard player/singer who’s looking to get into some more electronic stuff.
The MPCs are primarily for playing and manipulating samples, that's why the beat making kids like them so much. Personally, I find them lacking when it comes to sound synthesis. Roland's Zencore is far superior in this regard. If you are also a finger, then the MV-1 is definitely your groovebox of choice.
Great! So, can I record onto vocal track to, say, section 5 and pad 6? If I can, can I continue recording onto pad 6, but section 11 (while keeping recording over section 5)? Is there any overdub/overwrite functionality in a loop or you alway record one shot? TNX!
@@SanjayC I will admit one aspect is a little challenging to me and that is how to get a sample (say I'm recording a line in from a Roland J-6 chord progression) into the Verselab - I can get to the recording phase and complete the recording, but saving it to one of the section pads is proving challenging -- anyway, I'm enjoying these videos. Thanks again.
I have the mpc one. Since i only use it in tandem with a sound module, and I do not sample, the mv1 has the 3000 presets the fantom has so seems like this may be the choice for me. My question for you is, does the mv1 contain clips like the mc 101/707? Reason I ask is because you can basically make it a 16 track machine when you export the sounds.
Thanks Sanjay! Please tell me, how to play and record ex a guitar in rubato (floating rythm) and then with a given rythm in verselab. Thanks again. Thomas
Looks impressive! Especially for the price. For my first purchase in such things, it seems like a big step. I may start off with NI Maschine Mikro 3. But the Roland is very interesting.. will have to watch more videos on how it works. Does NI Maschine really competes directly with the Roland Verselab? Similar but very different? Meaning, it’s not either/or, but more likely 1st purchase and later 2nd purchase?
@@SanjayC true. The with or without the computer isn’t a huge deal for me. The workflow is. (Will I use one more than the other). The NI is more capable if I get more expansions plus Komplete ultimate etc as a full working system.. which I will likely too anyway. I like NI for my keyboard. Just Mikro MK3 or the larger MK3? This Roland is very interesting though. More limited but the fact you can creat or dabble when I don’t want to be near a computer. The physical hardware and self contained look is intriguing. Watching the more videos about creating tracks does feel like it will be a longer learning curve for me than Maschine with or without Logic since most DAW’s behave similar to a NLE. Similar logic of assembly of media etc. But looking forward to your follow ups.. The Roland is a very clean looking unit.
Hi sanjay, great video I'm looking for my first keyboard not a pianist and I can't decide between arturia keylab 49 mk2 and komplete kontrol a49 considering only the keybed feel which do you recommend nothing else matters not even aftertouch but the keybed feel
Thank you Sanjay for pointing out the swing function. Simply amazing that Roland left out a swing knob to apply to the whole beat. Makes you wonder if they bother to run these machines by working musicians before pushing these things out to the public.
It's because this way it allows you to have different swings for different parts of the song since each section has it's own swing settings. Also, an easier way to get to the swing (shuffle) settings is to press the Edit button + either of the Octave buttons, then turn the dial 3 times past step length and you will find "Shuffle" there in the measure edit settings. You will notice that the clip shuffle matches whatever is set for the measure shuffle (so setting it in either the clip settings or the measure settings will reflect the same changes). The clip shuffle is just an easier way to set each clip to a different shuffle since you can press a pad (clip 1), change the shuffle, press the second pad (clip 2), change the shuffle, etc...but if you're just looking to change the shuffle for the part of the song your'e currently working on, it's faster and easier to do the measure edit way.
Well actually you can do that on pretty much any sequencer sampler out there. A lot of options Synthstrom Deluge, Polyend tracker, Akai mpc's, Roland samplers etc. Even the old gear. It is not like computer makes a song. Back in the day you would just set up levels and record directly into tape.

Looks interesting, only thing missing in my little studio is a drum machine type piece of kit, looking at this, or may wait for the Korg Drumlogue. Uncomfortably sitting on the fence here lol.
Can you only record 16 steps at a time on this Verselab? Is it like the Novation Mk SL III? If yes I can not really understand...since most of the songs out there were around a 4 x 16 steps concept subdivided into verse, chorus and bridge etc... It seems frustrating to be forced to build these parts in 4 segments each... but maybe I am wrong?...
Thanks for the video! Very helpful, but I have a question. I’m new to this device and I cannot figure out how to pick which tracks play in a section. For example, if I have a piano on the KICK track and a synth pad on the SNARE track, how do I get just the piano to play on section 1 and both the piano and synth pad to play simultaneously on section 2? I tried muting the SNARE track on section 1, but now it’s muted on both sections 1 & 2. Am I missing something here? Thanks, Josh
