- On January 27, 2021, The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad museum in Baltimore, MD unveiled one of the most beautiful restorations (if not the most beautiful) that’s ever come out of their shop.
However, the restoration is only cosmetic. The EA cannot move under its own power.

For everyone asking, the restoration is cosmetic. The EA can’t run and I stated that in the description, but I guess no one reads those.

@@harrison444 any restoration can become a restorational one. But it often comes down to money, the tools to do so, and if they'd even use the thing or need more motive power
@@harrison444 Since there are virtually no parts for its twin Winton 201As left in existence, I very highly doubt it will ever run. It would need a complete repower and I don’t see that ever happening.

@@CrossbuckProductions you can say what you wish but look if we can build a steamer from scratch, or restore one almost from just the frame, or castings made from blue print to spec, it can certainly be done for a very old gen 1 diesle. but your right its all a matter of time an money, and need we still have people and groups that make niche products like that or capable of.
after all look at all the one of a kind locos they have at the age of steam, that with their first class steam and backshop could do just about anything needed except castings, and could bring back engines but they dont have huge power needs nor large money for such things when they have soo much to work on in their one of a kind collection nearly as unique as steam town or the mount clare collection itself.
still though its great that this first of its type built for the b and o is still around and look at those streamlined lines they dont make them that pretty anymore, the b and o did not save a whole lot of their old stuff soo much of it went into the blast furnaces because they were soo cash strapped toward the end before merging with chessie, at least mount clare was reoppened and the collection saved for a time I heard there was a real chance the closure would have been permanent, sad they did not save that em1 or a t3, saddens me more we were not able to buy one at scrap value when they offered us one in the city of Garrett to put on display, local historians say we were the last bastion of steam on the b and o, and the last one to have a steam locomotive in its roundhouse before it was hauled away to be cut up for scrap as the b and o needed the money. they sure did not save but two of their big steamers and that was just because the person that had the p7 donated it I heard. still this is the very oldest continual use railroad property in the western hemisphere if not the entire world I have not found a railroad shop or property still in use from as long as this one has and still is as a tourist railroad and museum not hear nor in the uk to my knowledge, if someone knows one that is older in the world please tell me
That is a beautiful locomotive. I love how the nose is so much more raked than later E/F units.

It is the most lovely and elegant diesel locomotive I've ever seen in person, maybe ever.
I have a photo of my newlywed wife clinging to a grabrail and acting as if she was being yanked at 80mph. That was thirty years ago last summer.
I have always preferred the early E's over the later ones, account, faired in number boards, and a steeper slope to the nose. The only one that rivals this one is the Illinois Railroad Museum's Burlington Route E, done in stainless steel.

This is Beautiful. Wish my Dad was alive to see this. He would have been standing there with tears in his eyes. He had a photo album with pics of all the stream liners he use to ride while in the service traveling across the country to different training areas to teach. Trains were his love and he had had a train layout that covered a 400 square foot basement at his home with nothing but Stream Liner trains and towns from the 30's and 40's.
Ok, I am now in love with this locomotive. This is a thing of beauty. Wish it could run, but I’m more that happy with the results of this phenomenal restoration.
IDK why it couldn't, it's a lot easier to overhaul a diesel locomotive then a steamer. Just throw in a modern motor and ditch lights and we'll be in business

@@dylanhale7300 Ditch lights would ruin its looks. And I do believe due to its age, it would be exempt from needing them anyways.
That’s why I love watching the CB&Q “Silver Pilot” E5 … at IRM or it’s rare excursions (Quincy on CB&Q line, a decade ago).
Last running example of that EMD E5 series (stainless steel).

1507 is an ex-C&O unit. Those two could've been together in Chessie paint at some time.
that sounds funny, Chessie Cat makes me think caterpillar prime when it's actually an EMD. But I get it.
Actually the Chessie unit began its life in B & O blue...the only reason it didn't get back to blue was when it was in Chessie paint Trains magazine dubbed it "The All American Diesel" the Chessie System was deemed to be the typical American railroad of the era...
CSX should go back to the Chessie System colors. Those colors look better

I had the privilege of seeing this magnificent engine 2 years ago! It needs to be seen in person to appreciate it. A pilgrimage to Baltimore is a must-do for all rain fans!!

Hi from Green Bay. WOW!!!!! The RR museum here sure could learn a lesson from you! They used to have the Milwaukee Road #38A E9Am that was donated in July 1987 as a rust bucket. We in the model railroad club wanted to rebuild it for excursions, replace all the rusted body panels, and repaint it with orange and maroon for the Hiawatha. But then, our director was fired in Sept. 1989 with No Explanation, and the new manager was Very Stern, and completely refused to help us. And he called off work on other pieces like the narrow guage Shay #5 that has been sitting in pieces for the past 30 YEARS!!!!! What a waste of time! But he was also fired after 6 years. Our museum went through a slew of managers who did Not have any railroad experience whatsoever. And the one who came in 2007 decided to sell the M.R. 38a, and it disappeared. Along with 7 other diesels like the Two(2) BL-2's, and the 3 F7 A-B-A set from WICT RR. Then other cars were scrapped. The 38A was sold online by a broker, but was it bought and destroyed by a scrapyard. We have no answer. Then the museum has gone through 2 other managers who have no idea at all about the scrapped pieces. The Green Bay Museum should potentially have 95 pieces, with a goal of 100 which is a noble cause. But due to the scrapping and selling, they are down and have shrunken to only 58 pieces. The storage tracks used to overflowing, and more track was needed to be built. But now in 2021 there are many empty spaces. Even our model railroad club and the H.O. layout was forcibly evicted, even after 19&1/2 years of being loyal volunteers. The local chapter of the N.R.H.S. was also disbanded. The local live steamers club tried to rebuild the miniature railroad, but they were also loudly rebuked. Thank you God that there are still some very nice museums like in Baltimore, plus many others, that do such a wonderful job with their volunteers plus professional donors. GOD Bless US All. Amen!!!!! I went to the B&O Museum twice and witnessed this spectacular work of mechanical Art. It is breathtaking in person. You need to go!
Born B & O. Both Grandfathers were B & O. My Dad's father was a Steam and diesel from 1905 to 1955. My Mon's Dad were a station master for 30 years. Sadly none followed in there footsteps. Still have a big warn spot in my heart for B & O, but must admit, I now model railroad Southern Pacific. I have several pieces of B & O and plan to display them proudly.
Shame they couldn't send it for by least, a rebuild to power their excursion, but still a marvelous restoration of an iconic loco nonetheless.

To be fair, I'm not sure how far she could actually run since...crashworthiness is probably not that high for a slant-nose. But I'm satisfied she got such a restoration either way

@@russellgxy2905 These old units are grandfathered in, the bigger problem is finding parts for the 2 Winton engines and from what I've heard, its missing its generators.

This unit looks fantastic, excellent job on the cosmetic restoration, hats off! One rarely gets to see these streamliners in their glory. When I saw this come down the tracks in the video I started to truly appreciate how special these designs are especially at the time in history they were presented to the public. A fantastic unity of styling, speed, and color all in a size that was all around you when up close. WOW!

It's sad and makes so little sense to me that restoring these is so hard...the machines that originally made the part are in wearhouses...pull them out and use them :(
I'm sure parts could be made for it providing the money is there anything can be done and who knows maybe later in life as money becomes available it may get mechanically restored

I can't imagine how spectacular that might have seemed in 1937. Gorgeous. I am not a fan of diesels in general but this one is a huge exception. Sorry I will not be able to get back there in February to see it. Thank you for posting.

@ 7 min. mark ... Gorgeous!! I love this diesel style from the 50's! Reminds me of when I was a kid. My best friend had a huge train set in his basement set up permanently that wound thru the walls into the other rooms in the basement. His dad, who was like an uncle to me, was an engineer on the C&EI Rail. I spent 2 nights a week, for many years, playing with those trains, and my favorite was this diesel locomotive! Thank you for this video, brings back some wonderful memories!
It would be nice if Amtrak would put heritage livery on some of their locos the way the freight companies do. That B&O paint job is bad-ass and would probably look pretty good on a Siemens charger unit as well.
It can’t happen. The freight corporations own the trademarks an rights to the names of companies merged out of existence.
New Jersey transit had produced some heretige unite not too long ago with an ALP45DP, an ALP46, and a GP40. They look pretty good.
@@fermitthekrog6318 Like I said, in some cases the successor freight company owns the trademark. Look at how CSX charges model companies for making models for their predecessors. UP does too.
Some of the companies are lenient, just as long as the trademark isn’t used in a manner which puts them or the predecessor in a negative light.

Talk about coincidence ! My cousin and his wife recently moved from America to the UK . Jan was recalling how she used to get on a box car with her school friends in the '60's and get a free ride ! She was certain they were steam . I said l was pretty certain that the US started using diesel locomotives in the mid to late 1930's and by the late 1940's there were no steam trains . In the UK we had to wait another 20 years ! And l added that the US diesels of that period were gorgeous , almost " Art Deco" ! ......And here is the proof ! A beautiful piece of period machinery ! Railfans hate having protective sheds put around historic locomotive because it impedes photography, but Mother Nature has a way of aging paint and metal. I would rather see the locomotive preserved for future generations under cover inside the roundhouse.

Streamlined diesels from that era are SO much more beautiful than any of the locos made and used today. They had a majesty and elegance to them that we just don't see anymore. I've always loved the wide curving-down windshields like the ones on this one and on the EMD E- and F-series locos, and the fairing on this one that goes almost all the way down to the track. Also, the flush headlight and paint job on this one are just awesome. I paused the video at 13:37 to just sit and admire it for a bit. This loco is simply GORGEOUS in every way!
I used to love watching the trains roar by on tracks parallel to K-15 in Wichita KS when I was a kid back in the 1960s - when the E-series streamliners were still in common use.
Simply stunning. And quite sleeker than what we have today.

There is a picture on wikipedia of this exact engine coming off the assembly line and being photographed with Tom Thumb engine for B&O RR in May 1937. This type of engine was also owned by the Penn RR as well. Beautiful restoration.

Back when America WAS great. When industrial engineering echoed the class and pride of the country and people had respect for railroads and the hard work required to keep them running (unlike today where attention-starved youth would rather trespass to take dangerous Instagram selfies and not care about the message that sends to others). WIsh I had lived during the streamline/art deco era. Just a stunning restoration job and another great tribute to America's first railroad.

People talking about how the engine was stripped over the years, cannibalized for parts,and you can't get parts. Big deal, with the room for those two little v12s you should be able to stick a more modern larger single engine in her,rather inexpensively.
That said,Wow,that's a beautiful loco! That sheet metal is nearly perfect!!! Hardly a ripple in it! Good bodymen!!
while there are probably a lot of usable 567 or 645 gen sets that would drop right in there, I think it would be much more interesting to see the two Winton's restored, al be it, probably very difficult to get all the controls, and prime movers restored to running condition. The path of least resistance would be to just drop a 567 or 645 prime set in them.

@@dylanhale7300 There was an "A,B"set that northern Ontario rr had in the 90s that had been repowered with Cat 3615s at 2250 hp or 2050 hp,can't remember which. Anyway,quite a bit more powerful than Both V12 engines original to this engine. Now those were Fp7s but there wasn't any external changes. The "F"and "E" series were pretty damn similar.

Great restoration. I would like to see them restore the "Allegheny", to running condition.
So would I. That would put an end to some of the UP's bragging and even better if both could be run over the same route with a load. While the H-8 can't start as much of a load once rolling it would out muscle the "Big Boy".
@@gravelydon7072 do you research and learn what you're talking about the Allegheny was overweight it was considered a track Destroyer they lied about its weight and guess what the Erie Triplex would have beat the big boy would have beat the Allegheny in a tug of war Erie Triplex pulled the longest train
@@plymouth-hl20ton37 For a short distance, the Triplex was a winner. But it had very serious faults. The main one being that it ran out of steam easily. Whereas the H-8 could run and run. C&O used them wrong on the coal drags but it still could have been, and was on an occasional passenger train and was good to 60MPH in the hills of WV. A Triplex would never have completed one full run in the same area. A Triplex was good for about 5MPH. Virginian tried a 2-8-8-8-4 version and found it wanting also and sent it back to be made into a 2-8-8-0 and a 2-8-2. The 2-8-8-0 was later converted to a 2-8-8-2. Virginian also owned some 2-6-6-6s ( 8 ) which were basically copies of the C&O H-8s . Between them, there were 68 of them while only 4 Triplex failures were built. 20+ of the C&O H-8s were equipped for passenger use. So you are comparing a failure ( 4 ) to a loco that worked, the Allegheny ( 68 ). The Triplexes were failures at speed and speed moves freight. The H-8s produced almost 7500 HP at 45 MPH.
Another B&O classic restored I honestly think it would look better in operation than stored in a car barn It could be on the back into that passenger train and look great for a picture of a great engine and contest

My great grandfather had one job in his life. He worked for the B&O RR. He lied about his age and started working in the station in Weston WV. He end his career as an engineer in 1950. So good to see the EA restored even if only cosmetic.....at least we still have her.
