I'm 73 and always liked this song. I'd never heard of Disturbed but when I heard this guy's unbelievable version of it - I was hooked! What a powerful performance!
I was always a S&G fan I then up on u tube comes Disturbed singing Sound of Silence I was transfixed I think I prefer this version to the original. But I am still hacked off with S&G they were great to gether but not apart petty squabbles. Egos getting in the way well one ego.
I'm a 75 year old female, so Simon & Garfield & their music are very familiar to me. BUT this version of 'Sound of Silence' absolutely stunned me. I cannot even begin to articulate what I felt. It overwhelmed me. I could only weep. It still affects me in that way. So very powerful 👏
Your voice and the musicians made this sound and song a hit to almost ALL generations. I am not a heart metal fan, nor a fan of profanity, but I love beautiful music, and I do love quite a few Disturbed songs. So thank you for these.
No, it's 100% a sellout. The use of pitch correction software that heavily altered his voice throughout the entire song is not music, it's automation. A computer. A mechanical robot. It's not his voice.
@@iSiberianHuskyman your cancer. David is widely known as being the top 100 vocalists of all time. Get your assumptions with autone and piss off. Get the help that you need, because the way you think is what is wrong with the world. Your voice would sound like ant shit in comparison, even with the "voice automation" you mention of.
I'm 61 & I'm a Disturbed fan anyhow. When I heard this version, it moved me to tears. Always felt that Simon & Garfunkel's version lacked feeling & felt numb. Their version lacks the sheer, raw emotion that David Draimon brings & you hear what a beautiful voice he has. Will always be a Disturbed fan.
I was a teenager when this record was released and I've always loved Simon & Garfunkel ... BUT ... I'm now 70, and this has to be the most powerful, best cover version of ANY record I've ever heard ... My total respect to 'Disturbed', and it's been an honour to have heard it (for the first time) performed live.
I know right.. no cover is better than the original but THIS IS.. and it’s Disturbed... lol I’m in my 60’s and love disturbed but have even more respect and admiration now..
Agreed. I dislike most covers because they messed with it. Try Pass Slowly by Seether. In studio acoustic version 3:33 then you’ve got the right one. It’s a haunting and beautiful song

I will be 73 this year and have been a staunch fan of this song and what it is desperately trying to say to the whole world, "WAKE UP AND SEE WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND YOU! YOUR WORLD IS CRUMBLING INTO DECAY--IT'S TIME TO FIX IT--THE SIGNS ARE ALL AROUND YOU!" But when I heard your version, it pulled me right inside the song itself! Your build up to the explosion had me crying and screaming out the song in such a way that I almost explode with the urgency of getting the message to the whole world and thinking to myself "Have I done anything to help fix this world to wake it up to it's destruction--I am nobody--have I done any tiny thing myself to help or am I also part of the problem as well! Though no one will come to my funeral--your song will be one of 3 that will be played over me! You are a great gift from my father in heaven! Keep it that way!--Love--Diana
I'm a senior citizen and I think Draiman's version of Sound of Silence is better than the original. And that's saying a lot, because I wore out my album playing this song. Kudos to the band for an excellent rendition of a beloved classic.
I agree, I am also from the older generation, I listened to the S & G original, but they never came close to performing it the way Disturbed was able to. Excellent!
@@gideonbotha3466 I'd always felt like this song needed more punch, somehow. The whole song is an exhortation to action and the original just never really followed through with that.
Another oldie who agrees with you, I loved the S&G original always have and it was one of a few songs I believe should never be touched or covered, till I heard Disturbed. It made me cry and still does whenever I hear it. So much power and emotion delivered by the singer it's almost religious in its delivery and feel. If you must cover other artists material then at least do it justice. Thank you Disturbed for succeeding.

I've heard Simon & Garfunkel's original version of "The Sound of Silence" a thousand times, and while it's good, it never really grabbed me. But David Draiman's vocals took this classic song to a whole other level that grabs you by the chin and makes your hair stand on end. Powerful, phenomenal performance on this song. I'm thrown for a loop by David's softspoken voice in interviews as opposed to his immense singing voice that punches you in the face. This man can SING.
Yes he can never knew disturbed before until this song. Hopefully he can sing😅 Mary did you know. Wow on the video 😮. We pray that he is filled with the Holy Spirit and come to Jesus. He gave him a voice for us to enjoy🤣!!!

As comment from M&C, I am also 73. Simon & Garfunkel were so influential in the 1960's in awakening the public to stand up and protest the Vietnam War. Many young men from my graduating class went off to war and never came back. It was a heart-wrenching decade. Simon & Garfunkel's version of this song was soft and respectful of the importance and meaning within the song. I didn't think anyone could top their original rendition of the genius lyrics. David Draiman's rendition brings out all the anger and rage that was felt by the younger generation over that horrible war. All the young men who died and never got to fulfil their life's dreams is what brings back the rage and the tears while listening to David Draiman's beautiful voice. It's absolutely beautiful in its perfection.
Oh man, what an incredible piece of art. It one of those that just grabs you and wrenches your soul. Releasing some of the most powerful emotions you will ever experience. I actually am incapable of evil beginning to describe the enotion that thus song invokes. It's overwhelming to say the least.Absolutely incredible !
Typical liberal view, as Simon himself explained it was about the inability of people to communicate, which now is worse than ever because of social media, it had nothing to do with the Vietnam war
I grew up in this era, and actually have the original Gospel album this song first came out on. The album tanked, but Sounds of Silence was the song that catapulted Simon & Garfunkel from the Gospel/Folk genre into the Pop/Rock genre. It hit the top of the pop charts in 1966, Then The Graduate came out a year later with their songs as the sound track and really propelled their career. They were not thought of as the anti-war group back then. Not as much as Dylan (Blowing in the Wind, etc) and others. Maybe because their gospel songs other than Sound of Silence ever got any publicity. The original version of this song was simply a warning. A VERY BIBLICAL warning. If you don't understand the biblical roots, you won't really understand the song, which has nothing to do with anti-war sentiment. For example: "Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you," "But my words, like silent raindrops fell ... into the wells of silence" WHO IS SAYING THIS? *"Jerusalem, O Jerusalem...How often I have longed to gather you under my wings as a mother hen gathers her chicks, but you would not."* And *Jesus* wept. A large part of Simon & Garfunkel's genius was in stating timeless, Biblical truths in modern language, in a modern setting. Instead of Jerusalem. it's New York City. Yet the message and the warning is just as timeless and pertinent today as it was then. Thousands of people worshipping false "neon" gods. Modern day BABYLON. All going their own way aimlessly, neither listening nor communicating with each other. Love grows cold. Life becomes coarse. David's rendition is stunning. When the sheep lose the Shepard, the flock disintegrates, all going their own way alone, losing the coherence of family and unable to communicate effectively anymore. If you don't understand the Biblical roots of this song, you will not even come close to the full meaning and portent of the song. And we should remember why Jesus wept. Jesus knew what the consequences of rejecting God would be for Jerusalem, and they were devastating. They still are. God help us.
His voice is so haunting in the beginning with the piano, I was hooked immediately, by the end I was in tears. NEVER had a song affect me in this way. Very good job. Disturbed did the song justice.
I agree; halfway through, as intensity rises, I get chills, every time. Then, like you, by the end, I'm in tears as well. Every single time. I will never tire of hearing this wonderful version of the Sounds of Silence. At this point, Simon & Garfunkle's version is simply bland & emotionless.....
"Mary had a Little Lamb" by Disturbed: Draiman opens up softly... 'Maaaarry had a liiiiiittle laaaaaaaamb' then harshly 'BUT I ATE IT'. Disturbed Grammy 2020. Calling it now.

I’m a HUGE fan of S & G and of their version of The Sound of Silence. But Disturbed’s version made me finally hear and understand the apocryphal nature of the lyrics. So powerful!!!
Yes, like the words, "people talking without speaking", I believe may be attributed to the rampant use of cell phones in today's world. These lyrics were ahead of their time when this song was made.

From a Brit military veteran who had suffered PTSD.... YOUR version of this song made ME travel through and finally accept my situation and finally get the help I needed! TYVM to Disturbed and Draiman *from a hardcore AC/DC 70's child*
The original Simon and garfunkel is great, for these guys to make it somehow better is amazing, then to have Miles Kennedy as a guest singer at some of the disturbed shows takes it to another level, excellent work.
@@headphoneman10 I said I was a Hardcore AC/DC 70's child as in I'm a Hardcore fan of AC/DC in my 50's! I also thrashed to the likes of Anthrax, etc before you were a twinkle in your daddy's winkle! You know who loves this version? Called me and my sister to listen to it. My 74 yr old dad. It brought a lot of generations together I feel! I know this video is 2 years old but felt like I needed to share that!
I pulled up a video of S&G here and played it for my parents (not that they needed it, but I wanted to play them back to back), then played Disturbed's official video. My mom cried, I could tell my dad was blown away. We started bouncing around to different artist's videos and after one, my dad said, "I'd rather you played more David Draiman." hehe it really is bringing generations together.
He’s preserving his voice as he speaks. And you bet. He comes from a long line of cantors and trained through high school until he turfed orthodoxy for metal. This version is so incredibly complex in terms of how he can feel the melancholy and anger and isolation along with how he modulates his breath, his pitch, how he moves from chest to head voice, from smooth to raspy and back without getting pitchy and so much more shows how someone with profound respect for the genius of a 21 year old song writer, wise beyond his years, and lent perhaps Simon might have wished to express for our modern times, making it a masterpiece. Simon’s original version was just the he and Garfunkel singing without a 60’s sort of band arrangement. It wasn’t as up tempo as the one they finally made famous. The producers found it to be too moody, so Simon tossed it aside. His manager talked them into re-recording it. But when you just read the lyrics, you really feel what he was saying. The message hasn’t changed even now. It’s just that we now have more folks around who can cover it in ways that are meaningful to them without losing the sense of isolation, melancholy, and the social statement. David’s version, I think, speaks to listeners now in a way that would never have been accepted in the 60’s folk scene. Both are virtuoso versions in their own individual rights. Such respect!

It's because of the the version of this song that I, at the age of 63 have just only discovered and now a big fan of Disturbed. You're not a sellout. If anything you've reached an older generation. The warm, rich, soothing and powerhouse of your voice is mind blowing. I hated....hated metal...until now. Really appreciate your talent sir. ❤🇨🇦❤
I am 72 years old, and I love this song the way it is done by Disturbed. It gives me goose bumps. I am glad you chose to interpret this song to amaze an audience, such as me. This song speaks to me and your crescendo into the conclusion gives me goose bumps! Love, love, love your rendition of the Sound of Silence.
The thing that I love about Disturbed's cover is that it actually captures the angst and depression encapsulated in S&G's original lyrics. At its core, The Sound of Silence is about people simply not paying attention to each other. We hear, but we don't, you know? We're all just waiting for *our* turn to talk ... so no one will hear us. Screaming at the top of your lungs to be recognized, and it all falls on deaf ears. And while the lyrics that Paul Simon provide are perfect for that generation, Disturbed captures the actual *mood*--dark, depressing, haunting ... depressing, and ANGRY! I've listened to thousands of covers. This ranks in my top 3 of all time.
Agree! The original song is perfect in its own way, the softness and harmony really brings out the melancholy aspect of the song. Disturbed covers more of the raw angst and depression more directly. Both the original and the cover highlights the haunting cries of the song and message really well. Disturbed's version is definitely different, but in keep of the spirit of the song. It just proves how powerful and timeless of a song it is! I really like both of them equally. Depending on the mood, I might choose to listen to one over the other. But equally excellent and touching. It's an ode to the power of music and lyrics. The original will always stay stronger as S&G actually wrote it, I mean those lyrics can simply stay as poetry. The melody enhances and reverberates the beauty and truth of the lyrics. But a huge kudos to bringing as equally stunning take on the song! It is appropriately haunting and powerful, unlike many other cheery covers. There were great vocals but they just don't seem to embody/encapsulate the spirit of the song as much as this one does. As a band, instrumental & vocal composition wise, they did fantastic job! Happy to see more people being introduced to S&G as well as to metal music. Both genres/bands offer such intangible richness to the soul.
My top three cover songs are: 3. Bad wolves version of The cranberries song zombie 2. Disturbed The sound of silence 1. Hearts live at Kennedy center- stairway to heaven.
I have to agree with you on this cover! I LOVE covers and search them out. This one has to be my favorite. Followed by Jamie Johnson’s cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Four Walls of Raiford. Third best cover is one of twenty George Thorogood’s covers of the blues greats. Probably the cover of Johnny Cash Cocaine Blues, I know it was a cover for Johnny too.
I'm just going to say it. There is something damn sexy about how eloquent he is when he speaks. His look with the combination of his intelligence is extremely attractive.

David, is incredibly smart, articulate and immensely self-aware of the impact and power of his art...this is simply a masterpiece! Thank you David (and your artistic team) for this brilliant re-interpretation of a song with the power to transform its listeners...wow!!
What you say David about this song being a doorstep to people who wouldn't actually hear you is true for me. I had to park the car, listening to this interpretation and finding myself in awe, sharing a precious moment with my teen son. When the piece was over, I needed to remain in silence for a while, it was a gift Disturbed gave me.
I’m 65 and I love this version by disturbed. I hadn’t heard of them before this and I was already familiar with the original version of this song. It’s such a powerful new version that makes me emotional every time I hear it. I’ve also now listened to more of Disturbed’s songs and enjoying them too.
I invited my 6 year old son to listen to your incredible cover of this old song and encouraged him to listen to the poetry of the words, as was obviously struck by the intensity of the musical emotions coming through. I told him THIS is what rock and roll is really all about. And now he loves poetry as much as rock and roll. Thank you so much for creating this beautiful piece of art.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Um…I am an OPERA SINGER and I CRIED when I heard this song. My mom LOVED IT too and my mom ONLY listens to classical music. I honestly think they should do more like this. I love how he starts off melodic and sweet and soft and then at time 3:14, he turns into an angry Viking and screams the song. But he screams in the right way…like it’s coming from emotions, not just screaming for the sake of screaming, which a lot of metal music is. Lol
I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and have to say that I enjoy the Disturbed version much better. I've watched the video well over a hundred times and cry every time. Well done!
I would never had listened to Disturbed but for The Sound of Silence. I even waited a couple of years after it was released to finally listen, and I cried! Now I have multiple CD's and listen to them on a regular basis. At 66, I can say I cut my teeth on Black Sabbath and am losing them with Disturbed! I love David Draiman's voice and can listen and appreciate the true beauty of this band. No more "Turn off that noise!" I'm so happy to have had a chance to hear and appreciate Disturbed!
I wasn’t able to cry! I had to remember to breathe. I first heard it as it played during a highly emotional episode of “Black List”. After that, I researched it and listened to it and watched the music video and many reaction videos. I’ve never heard a single one say anything but that everything about it is amazing! I agree.
This song introduced me to the power of Disturbed. When the song was written, in 1964 , I was still in High School. While in High School.....during biology class, the office PA system interrupted to tell us that president John F. Kennedy had just been shot ...in Dallas. I Walked home that day .......................and life has never, ever been the same since . That was the end of innocence for me. Somehow, this version by Disturbed encapsulates ALL of that and the decades since. The hope of that first, innocent version.... and the reality of what we have become since then... This is the most Powerful thing I have listened to in all my 76+ years. Thank You .... especially to Danny !
I am 77 years old and have heard you sing this version literally 100's of times. I absolutely love the way you lead up to a very dramatic ending and you are extremely gifted. Keep up the good work.
I am 73 and I accidentally came across this video. I was mesmerized! Had never heard of Disturbed, sorry guys. I sure know you now!! I listen and watch this several times a day. I love this version. Thank you for your talent and the joy you have given me.
The continuing saga of never judging a book by its cover continues with this eloquent gentleman's interview. I might have expected a profanity laced bleep fest, but this man delivered his explanation more eloquently than I would ever be able to, and I have neither tattoo nor piercing. I am 54 years old and the sound of silence is the first song that I can recall hearing from childhood. Of course that would be difficult to prove, but it is my memory. The depth of emotions delivered is extraordinary and never ceases to move me to feelings of joy. What he says about a single song being a gateway is true. Sarah Brightman's cover of Nessun Dorma brought me to the halls of opera. This cover has me intrigued by what I might like from this band.
@@KaiserSoze679 Agree. Sadly though with this type of music (their "normal" music, not Sounds of Silence), it's almost a requirement from their fan base that they curse like drunken sailors in order to be cool. This is refreshing.
I’m a 57 year old US Army Veteran, always loved the original, my interpretation is it’s about Humanity’s separation from Humanity, but still a beautiful song. I’m a fan of Disturbed myself, had a “meet and greet” with the band in San Jose California on the Prayer tour, and ran across the Disturbed cover on TH-cam….. it brought me to tears, the way they delivered the song and lyrics, was powerful and moved me through a range of emotions, the message delivered masterfully. I read somewhere that Paul Simon himself said “We (Simon and Garfunkel) were the pleading warning of what was happening, Disturbed’s cover is the rage that the warning went unheeded”. Don’t know if he actually said that, or something close to it, but I agree with the statement because the difference between the original and cover sounds just like that description to me.
This cover of the song is breathtaking and David Draiman added more emotional nuance and outrage to the lyrics. The original version of "The Sound of Silence" clued me in early in life to avoid the "neon gods" of commerce and idolatry and to never be silent in the face of corruption and injustice. Whether that was ever the true meaning implied by the lyrics, that's what I inferred.
Being an old school going back to Greenwich Village where I heard Simon and Garfunkel in smokey joints in the early part of the 60's, I thought Distrurbed would be sacrilege but after hearing David Dralman put his amazing passion with anger and pain leading to the end in solace softly leaving the listeners breathless. Deep inside of David's own persona, resides a gentler and finer soul that is able to convey gentleness from within. Despite a macho angry projection, inside he's a loving gentle soul that longs for filling the emptiness that has been part of his success and awareness of what his diehard audience expects from him. Great rendition of one of the most beautiful and philosophical song by the genius of Paul and Art! Thank you David for a great performance!
The anger in his voice is just so captivating. It forces you to really listen to the lyrics and realize how bleak the song is. I read someone say the original was a warning and this version was a response to all that has happened. Thanks Disturbed.
From my limited experience with subculture this description fits typical Metalhead rather well. Macho and aggressive on the outside and gentle and caring when it matters.
I'll be honest, when I came across this version I passed it over because I thought it would be a heavy mashing of the original to make it more aggressive. I am glad I came back to it to give it chance because it has to be one of the best reinterpretation of a song that I have ever heard.
David, I may have listened to your version at least 50 to 75 times and each time, I get the same reaction and more. It brings out emotions in me new that I hadn’t realized before. Yes, the lyrics are wonderful, but it’s your voice and delivery that makes it the masterpiece it is.

It was definitely done too fast, and the background music and general atmosphere was way too perky for such deeply profound lyrics and thoughts. It just fits much better on this version.
Any band or performer who can take a risk and learn and extend their craft gets kudos from me. Breaking into new worlds is a risk....and one that everyone should take during their lifetime. This was a brilliant diversion from their "norm". What Simon and Garfunkel made into a warning, Disturbed made into a battle cry. I cried the first time I heard it.
Once I heard the Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence, I came to view the original as a person having a revelation, and starting to tell people, with Disturbed's version being a more practiced, more confrontational presentation, tinged with years of frustration and anger at the warning of the message being ignored.
I love the original and had never heard of Disturbed. I was told 'You will love it' but I doubted it. Then, I listened and watched and was almost in tears. Disturbed did something for this song that made me love it even more and now I am listening to Disturbed more. Fantastic job Mr. Draiman and the rest of Disturbed!
Another older fan here. A conversation with one of my sons about generations and music led him to share this version of Sound of Silence. I was mesmerized, simply awed. I think this performance is hugely impactful because it is so much more relevant to the world today combined with the way it was done, sooo beautifully. The vocal is so pure and perfect! Never been a fan of heavy metal, harsh or "abrasive" sounding bands, but this song has made Disturbed the exception for me. Love!!!
Sir, I had never heard of you or your band until this song was played in my presence. It is without question the most powerful song I have ever heard. The meaning is different to folks based on their personal experiences. I spent 29 years in law enforcement and can tell you it’s moving. Thank you

Is it just that us 'old geezers' can relate to the emotions so beautifully presented by David ? I too am a septuagenerian, I loved the original as heard during my younger days, but this incredible version ROCKS !! I saw a technical presentation that segregated the technical elements of arrangement & engineering that interpreted the feelings behind Disturbed's version so well. Thank you, David.
I'm 68 and also find it interesting that I keep coming back to listen again. Everybody in my age group, my daughter and even my granddaughters are fans as well. Even Paul Simon likes it.
I've always been quick to judge these "heavy metal" groups, thinking they didn't sing about anything besides satan or something along those lines. I've come to realize that they are truly artists, just like any other groups in more mainstream genres. Especially this guy, he's such an artist and has a craft to him. I'm glad to have opened up to explore this type of music even more
I'm 61 & used to think that too because the "experts" made such claims. Learned many years ago to stop listening to the so called experts and to judge for myself bands for myself. I've heard some truly amazing musicians and singers. If I never gave all types of Metal bands a chance, I would have missed out on great bands like Disturbed and Korn. I set limits. There is some really dark music out there & I stay away from that. I've even listened to some of Marilyn Manson's music. Some of these guys are very intelligent & have lots to say. Yeah, its why i still steer clear of most "death metal" and "black metal" groups mostly because of this stereotype. However, i am a big fan of heavy metal/power metal/etc. There are some very talented and skilled artists that really put a passion into their music, beyond just trying to sell an album or become popular. Disturbed is a band that isn't there for just the music, but really sheds light on societal issues and makes people feel empowered. Another great band is Sabaton. This band makes songs about battles, wars, heroes of war, and struggles fought throughout history that actually happened. Some songs are very sad even for a metal song such as "The Price of A Mile" . Its a song about the battle of Passchendaele which cost over 500,000 lives.
I loved this song when it came out but didn't feel they captured the emotion of the words. Disturbed did this song justice! I'm 63 and loved how this version was so passionate a d raw, the way it needed to be!!! Great job!!!!
I've been listening to disturbed for the past 14 years. When this song came out.. it was a proud moment to have my parents enjoy a band I have been a fan of for so long
This is a man (and group) comfortable enough in their own skin to expand where they travel to find gems. One of the reasons audiences now, and audiences 60 years ago experienced strong emotions is the brilliance of Simon's lyrics as well as the melody.
This cover of "The Sound of Silence" was my introduction to Disturbed. Growing up, I'd always been told not to listen to Disturbed, their music isn't any good, blah blah blah. One day, I wanted to listen to the Simon and Garfunkel version, so I asked my smart speaker 'OK Google, play The Sound of Silence' and it replied 'OK, playing The Sound of Silence by Disturbed.' My first reaction was to turn it off and ask for the S&G one, but I was curious and let it play. Oh boy was I glad I did! This opened the door to the rest of their music for me, let me in gently but with a good representation of what to expect. Now, I've even gotten my parents to appreciate some of the musicality and lyrics from some other Disturbed songs :)
I heard this version of this song five years ago driving home from working second shift around 11:30 pm on a winter night. It stopped me dead in my tracks. It is the only song where I have weeped for no reason. Absolutely moving and powerful! Love, love, love this version!
At 52 years old, and having many songs that I have loved throughout my life, this version of The Sound of Silence is one of my all time favorite songs. David Draiman's voice is simply incredible.
My mom is 73 and she told me about your cover on this song. It shocked me when she said it was by Disturbed; I didn't even know that she knew of your band. She told me that she saw you performed it on one of the late night shows. It's amazing how you're opening up different generations to your music. It is an excellent song!
This song introduced me to the power of Disturbed. When the song was written, in 1964 , I was still in High School. WhileI in High School.....during biology class, the office PA system interrupted to tell us that president John F. Thank You !
I am a 52 yr old woman. Disturbed fan from beginning. I have 2 adult boys now. My boys never really understood the meaning behind SOUND OF SILENCE until Disturbed did a remake. I can say my boys have a whole new out look and understanding of life, music, and family. THANK YOU for helping me explain to my boys what this song means. Sending love and light to the band that has changed my life.
Its so brilliant i cry every single time. And he's exactly right, i would never have been willing to explore their music before but found out how theatrical their music truly is. And as he says, melodic
I'd never heard of Disturbed. At first, I thought "Oh, another over vocalized 'tribute'". Then, I took that chance and listened. Goose bumps. A few tears. And a great appreciation of David's vocal chops. #YouHadMeAtHello

I heard Disturbed’s “Sound of Silence” on the show “Blacklisted”. Stopped what I was doing to hear this incredible voice. It brought me to my psychological knees in reverence.
I saw them live last year and cried during this song. One of my best friends would always sing the song to his newborn daughter, up until he took his own life before she turned 1. It played at his funeral and has given me chills since.
That is so sad. Pain comes and goes. Taking your own life is like dumping a brown bag of dung on the doorstep of those who love you and then lighting it on fire- then ringing the doorbell. Only the fire never goes out for them. Why do I know? My brother in law killed himself. Sorry folks- I see it as a cheap and cowardly way out. Everyone feels pain. Stick with it- work through it. Breathe. Focus on one breath at a time. Pain is like a wave in the ocean. It flows in. It flows out. Leave it be.
Every time I hear this song it reminds me how great a vocalist David Draiman is. So versatile. For this song in particular I actually prefer this cover to the original version.

No way it’s better than the original. The version of just a guitar and two voices in harmony will always be perfect and the best
The original is the best, covers can never surpass the original. Disturbed's cover is great, but not better than the original for sure.

I want to thank you for this AMAZING version of this song. I am blown away and love you so much for it.
Thanks for the perspective. It's divine on so many levels. That's what a blessing really is.
*"Jerusalem, O Jerusalem...How often I have longed to gather you under my wings as a mother hen gathers her chicks, but you would not."*
And *Jesus* wept.
This man is not human. No human could sing like this to make you feel it in your bones on top of one hell of a voice!!👏🏼

How can a man with such a soft speaking voice create a beautiful monster of a singing voice! i think he is incredible lol
I believe he comes from a long line of Cantors.

I love this version. Disturbed are better than Simon and Garfunkle. The crescendo actually gave me goosebumps and shivers down my spine. Brilliant.
I get goosebumps every time I hear this song, also! The more it goes on also does the same.
What's the other two? Just curious ;P
Mine too.
My top three cover songs are:
3.
Bad wolves version of The cranberries song zombie
2.
Disturbed The sound of silence
1.
HELL. YES.
Wait until you hear me!

David, is incredibly smart, articulate and immensely self-aware of the impact and power of his art...this is simply a masterpiece! Thank you David (and your artistic team) for this brilliant re-interpretation of a song with the power to transform its listeners...wow!!
Amen! No matter how many times I listen, I still crave more. His talent is breathtaking and addicting.
My husband and I are church musicians and my 6 y/o overheard the Disturbed version and she said "this is church music" and I mean she wasn't wrong
What kind of poetry does a 6 year old like besides Hickory Dickory Dock or Dr. Seuss?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Um…I am an OPERA SINGER and I CRIED when I heard this song. My mom LOVED IT too and my mom ONLY listens to classical music. I honestly think they should do more like this. I love how he starts off melodic and sweet and soft and then at time 3:14, he turns into an angry Viking and screams the song. But he screams in the right way…like it’s coming from emotions, not just screaming for the sake of screaming, which a lot of metal music is. Lol
What they did with Sounds of Silence is absolute perfection.
He has such an incredible trained voice. He's just not there singing this song he's making you feel it as well. Bravo.
Draiman trained to be a cantor in his synagog when younger. So, yeah, a fantastically trained voice.
I agree. Very well said!
This song is the MOST compelling song I have ever heard(especially with your deliverance of it) I cry each and every time. God bless you sirs.
I cry too! His performance evokes so much raw emotion!
He adds just enough intensity to the vocal to drag that song, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century. Exquisite.
I think this rendition of Sound of Silence is stunning. I cried like a baby the first time I heard this. Bravo! Incredible!!!!
I wasn’t able to cry! I had to remember to breathe. I first heard it as it played during a highly emotional episode of “Black List”. After that, I researched it and listened to it and watched the music video and many reaction videos. I’ve never heard a single one say anything but that everything about it is amazing! I agree.
I cry every single time I listen
I fall in love with this interpretation. I am 72 and I am ready to enter this door. Thank you.
❤️❤️❤️
Heavy!!!
You may be interested in interviews of Ronnie James Dio since you liked this one.
@@6foot7dad I will check it out.
Nah man. David is a very intelligent, thoughtful kind of guy. People just assume metal heads must be these angry shitty people but most really aren't.
@@KaiserSoze679 you are so right!! Metalheads are some of the nicest people out there, but we just get a bad rap!!
Thanks Disturbed.
i am not good at english(learning it) but wow your describing it was amazing. beautifully done 😁😁😁
From my limited experience with subculture this description fits typical Metalhead rather well. Macho and aggressive on the outside and gentle and caring when it matters.
Well said ❤️🎶
I'll be honest, when I came across this version I passed it over because I thought it would be a heavy mashing of the original to make it more aggressive.
This was a powerful cover! It hits like a religious experience. I never knew of the band Disturbed, and now I'm hooked on them!
Anything sung using Auto-Tune is not a religious experience. In fact, just the opposite.
@@iSiberianHusky Jesus leave it alone. EVERYONE uses auto tune and pitch correction to some extent in studio versions, even if the singer doesn't know it. Fucking watch a version from a concert and quit harping on this. It's not just how perfectly he hits the notes that makes this song amazing, it's the emotion he puts into it. I highly suggest you do more research on David before running your mouth. Better yet, try to do what he does live WITHOUT the autotune and see if you could do even near as well.

I never heard of Disturbed, until a few years ago someone told me to view their video. I knew well the original song, and wonder how would a metal band treat it. I cried. I still cry every single time I hear it. The beauty in the song the way they chose to cover it, can not be described, you have to feel it. Most people do feel it, which is why it brings so many to tears. That song was the doorway to the band Disturbed for me, and I would say millions of other people world wide as well.
Listening to it this weekend as I watch the USA stumbling toward Armageddon, this song reached me on a deeper level.

I feel the same everytime.
It's such a powerful delivery. I literally try not to cry but the tears seem to have minds of their own.
Best cover EVER!!
I always thought the original was too fast, it put me on edge. Disturbed's version is simply perfection.
@@OriginalLictre that's been said often since its release. S&G's version a warning, Disturbed's version a battle cry.
oh, lol...i guess I said that 5 months ago. hahahahah not a good start to my day.
well worded!
I spent 29 years in law enforcement and can tell you it’s moving.

one of the greatest songs ever written, David sings it in a way that you can feel it.
Indeed
Is it just that us 'old geezers' can relate to the emotions so beautifully presented by David ? I too am a septuagenerian, I loved the original as heard during my younger days, but this incredible version ROCKS !! I saw a technical presentation that segregated the technical elements of arrangement & engineering that interpreted the feelings behind Disturbed's version so well. Thank you, David.
I am a metal head. 54 . I absolutely love this version of the song. I love how disturbed is bringing the past back to life.
I'm 67 and I agree with Trudy Hill this is the only rendition of this song I listen too constantly

We may not always like what we hear because sometimes, the song is like a mirror & we may not always like the reflection we see.
Well done sir the blinkers are off, go enjoy and tell your truth.
@@patk3601 Symphonic metal is a genre to give some time to if you have not. Primarily bands like Delain or Within Temptation. Their singers have beautiful voices.
You should check out Small Town Titans. Another phenomenonal voice and intelligence in lyrics
One day, I wanted to listen to the Simon and Garfunkel version, so I asked my smart speaker 'OK Google, play The Sound of Silence' and it replied 'OK, playing The Sound of Silence by Disturbed.'
My first reaction was to turn it off and ask for the S&G one, but I was curious and let it play. Oh boy was I glad I did! This opened the door to the rest of their music for me, let me in gently but with a good representation of what to expect. Now, I've even gotten my parents to appreciate some of the musicality and lyrics from some other Disturbed songs :)
I just heard Disturbed sing this today and the beauty of it made me weep.
This cover of the song literally gives me chills. It's one of the most amazing things I've ever heard.
I heard this version of this song five years ago driving home from working second shift around 11:30 pm on a winter night. It stopped me dead in my tracks. It is the only song where I have weeped for no reason. Absolutely moving and powerful! Love, love, love this version!

The sound of silence showed the true beauty and range of David’s voice...
I saw them live last year and cried during this song. One of my best friends would always sing the song to his newborn daughter, up until he took his own life before she turned 1. It played at his funeral and has given me chills since.
I'm so sorry. I truly am.
