Ah, so many memories. I owned a FZR1000 in the mid 90s. It was black and maroon with a gold Viking horseman on the fairing and it was immaculate. It had “Maxton “ suspension and apparently been lightly tuned. It could manage (an indicated) 187 mph. Don’t ask me how many miles per gallon it did though, I didn’t care! I’ve had several great bikes like 850 Yamahas, Ducati monster 900, and Suzuki intruder, but the FZR 1000 GENESIS EXUP was far and away my favourite. Now I’m in my 70s Biking is no more than a fond memory, sadly. Let me wish you all the luck in the world restoring this icon of motorcycling history. Great videos. I watched the episode on cleaning the tank and assessing the brakes last night keep em coming my friend.

Thank you buddy, I'm really excited to get it actually on the road. From my little experience of riding it round the carpark here I just know it's going to be a barrel load of fun! Have you thought about getting a trike?

    • @Tomthumb222
      @Tomthumb222 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Sadly, no. The DVLA took my bike licence when I turned 70. I probably filled out the form incorrectly, but they’ve refused to reinstate it. I took time out from my Hotel to watch the Trike festival every year. It’s amazing what these guys do to their trikes and the good they do for tourism and charities. Happy riding my friend.

I had one of these back in the early 90s, loved it! Check the fuel pump, should be under the seat/battery area, take off the plastic cover on the end of the pump and there should be a small set of contacts (like old style points) clean them with emery paper, should help with starting/running issues

Just been watching on TH-cam ‘Superbike Surgery’ today. Great knowledgeable chap. His video was to fix a bike that was with a dealer for 8months. He’s great at everything, his carb cleaning is 5*s.
The reason for my message is on your new project bike, your tachometer is stuck at 6k. Superbike Surgery advised ‘it’s showing the 6k on the tach because the tank is disconnected!’

I live in the midlands, Redditch which is south of Birmingham.
I bought it in Oxford, and had to stop on the way home because my ass was killing me.
      I checked the odometer and I'd done 9 miles . . .
I started riding in 1968 at age 14, and I'm still riding now at age 70, so it's hardly like I'm the new kid in town.

I own a 86 GSX-R 1100 and a 87 FZR1000 like this one, and the FZR is far more comfortable than the GSX-R, its the pegs on the GSX-R that makes it uncomfortable over longer rides, they are high, (like the FZR) but also more forward set than the FZR, which gives that weird 80s GSX-R riding position. The FZR is also very narrow at the rear of the tank, due to the carbs and airbox being under the front of the tank, not behind the engine like the GSX-R and most other 80s bikes.

(Double negative is always a positive😊). Depends how you get on de-rusting that tank, in some ways, because it ought to be easiest to sand that back compared to the plastics. There is no point trying until you know it'll hold fuel. The fact that it is currently holding old fuel is a really good sign. That would be high on my list of priorities. Switchgear is metal. Fairly easy to strip them down , clean out and repaint
    Those engines are pretty tough.
The oil light is an oil level light. But comes on when you press the starter button as a bulb check.
You can strip the ignition switch down fairly easily
The airbox rubbers will be hard, and a nightmare to get back on. You might be able to rescue them with an ethanol / winter green oil mix

These were cutting edge machines in the 80’s such a shame it’s been neglected and repainted as it should have always been respected.
I had an RD500 in 1990 and a friend had a FZR1000 EXUP. I thought being flat out on the A1 at 145mph I was the kiddie until he came past me on his Genesis like I was standing still.
Awesome performance from the FZR yet this one neglected like a moped.
I hope you can restore it to its former self and restore the huge performance!
Many older motorcycles have escaped this abuse.
I have GSXR1100G, ZXR750L2 and RG500 which are all in very good condition.

I was kind of in the same phase last year, considering any of these three models you mentioned. Thought the Honda was too fat, I did go and see a FZR1000 but did not get it as it was repainted in lime green and the owner did not allow me to do a test ride. So I ended up with a '92 GSX-R 1100. And I also have a GPz900r, it runs but needs a lot of work.

Ash, if the fuel tank has not been lined previously, then may I suggest a fuel tank cleaning method that I have used with great success.
Step 1: Drain and dry fuel tank with compressed air gun, fuel tap removed , and get as much of the filth out as possible.
Step 2: re mount the tap and filler cap. Put a fair amount of acetone in the tank and slosh it around thoroughly for 5 minutes or so. Remove tap and filler cap drain acetone and repeat thoroughly blowing out the tank with air gun.
Do this OUTSIDE as the clouds of rust will be colossal!
Step three: Install fuel tap once more, making sure it is liquid tight. Place fuel tank so that it can be filled to the brim with Evaporust. Let the Evaporust sit in the tank for 2 days or more.
Step 4: drain the Evaporust back into its container (it's good for multiple uses), then thoroughly rinse the tank out with water. Immediately blow as dry as possible with air gun and finally insert a hair dryer in filler opening and leave running for several minutes.
The tank will look like new inside.
The Evaporust is safe to use and will not damage parts or even burn skin. It's also completely non-toxic.
    Cheers!

Is the Thundercat the 600 or 750, and the Thunderace the 1000?
Probably the same frame whichever way.
Yes, I saw the Thunder*** as a development of the EXUP. Pretty much the same bike with different panels and a few odds and sods like upside down forks, which my early EXUP didn't have.
Fabulous bikes though, and a joy to cross a continent on.
I used to go to the Bol d'Or at Ricard every year in the 1980's, and went basically what we call the A and B roads routes, so it was around 1000 miles each way from Calais to Côte d'Azur (690ish on the motorway) going different routes each year, but generally for example Dijon, in and out of Switzerland at Geneva, back into France for Annecy, over the cols in the Alpes, down the Route Napoleon, Gap, Sisteron, Grasse, then coming out onto the coast somewhere like Nice or Cannes, so a good test of a bike in terms of long distance comfort and rideability.

Cool bike, you could put some speed block design on it a la Kenny Roberts, think those had an 18 inch rear wheel not sure what tyre options are available now. Looking forward to sseing you crack on with it.

Nope, it's the pre-exup model, it only ran for about a year 👍

Maybe your UK models were different but my early Ninja 900 would run 167mph two up all day long, at altitude. That was radar verified, don't ask me how I know that =)

Looks to be a pretty decent investment. Once she's up and running, invest in a Lithium Ion battery, they are fantastic, very light, and very quick charging times.I only discovered how quickly they charge because I idiotically left the ignition and lights on overnight.
