  • What do you do when the cod's gone?
    To follow the theme of our last episode's fishery doom and gloom, we wanted to show what had been done since the collapse on the island of Fogo, and how a single person can make a difference when they decide to.
    Going to Fogo? Go to Foley's Shed. It is worth traveling across the world for. Authentic.

      Question: do you think this tourism tactic going to work in the long run? Like you said this kind of place only cater to wealthy individuals wanting authenticity. But one economic hiccup like what happened in 2008 can throttle the flow of tourism for 3 to 5 years. And repeat recognition is key to make a vacation area relevant for years. When economy healed it's not a guarantee for people to return to this place or even remember it at all. This kind of tactic is hanging with a thin thread.

    I'm from Fogo Island. The changes have been good, for the most part. But there are more and more people there now that are from elsewhere, and they are bringing their own culture, which may kind of defeat the whole goal or preservation long-term. Also, much of the available land is being bought up by rich people and retirees from elsewhere. That's lead to some problems, as prices are now inflated, and anyone who is actually from there is in danger of being priced out. Ah progress.

It changed everything, I ended up finding a new engine for the boat this time on the land and the boat is a tractor. Farming is what my family does now. I hope Fogo can maintain what they have and keep their economy rolling, the people look like they deserve it.

    Wow, what a story! There's absolutely no way this would have happened with "old money". It took someone who came into money later in life and appreciated the opportunity it gave them to try to make a difference. Compare and contrast a certain shady New York real-estate developer who had solid gold sinks installed in the bathrooms on his private jet. Zita Cobb has a good heart and no amount of money is going to change that. It's certainly something to contemplate, even for those of us without fantastic resources. Zita Cobb may have poured money into Fogo Island, but it's the people who are making the effort to adapt and change and survive that are the most amazing part of this story. Thanks again for a wonderful video. It made my day.

It's the notoriety they bring that makes people watch videos and maybe ride a ferry to buy some quilts and jam. The point is that even though no one on the Island is shelling out $6000 to stay in the hotel, they reap a benefit from it...

      It's funny how many do, Carnie was one Bill Gates is another. Huntsman (don't know his first name, maybe John? His son ran for president and he did not give him a cent) The only reason I have to become _"rich"_ is I want to take away _"not enough money"_ as the excuse for those who are so close to success not to succeed. Are there rich bastards? Yes, just like there are poor saints. I just refuse to hate or love any group because the actions of the few.

    • @slicedtoad
      @slicedtoad 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@therasheck Yeah, the rich people of today are better than the rich people of any other time period by a huge margin (on average). But the best work that's being done isn't giving back to their local communities, it's a lot more utilitarian than that. They focus on the poorest people in the world and have vastly improved their lives. And they've gone with a strategy of greatest impact for least amount of money. They're people that have made more money than they could ever need and decided to do something with it. But they *made* that money. It didn't magically fall into their laps. Luck may have been involved but so did a ridiculous amount of work, stress and risk. They aren't going to give it away without maximizing its impact. And they understand how to maximize the impact because they've run businesses that've already done that.
      They've worked to make the money and now they are working to give it away. It'd be difficult to find a more respectable group of people (that is, the rich people like Gates).

    Does it still count as trickle down economics if it's not actually making a profit?

    • @Gillsing
      @Gillsing 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I thought the point with trickle down economies was that the rich get richer, and then they spend more, and some of what they spend trickle down to the less affluent. And in this case a woman spent her wealth and it trickled down in the place where she wanted it to trickle down. Though I guess the trickle-down hasn't been happening in the places from where she ultimately _got_ her wealth, so it's not as if the concept really 'works' for everyone who has to participate.

    • @ChevisPreston
      @ChevisPreston 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Gillsing no, it’s more an economic style simplification than an actual architected political ideology. Trickle down is a simple term for a simple idea: allowing more money to be earned allows more money to be exchanged, and, as a result, those that make the most money actually give more to the bottom of the socioeconomic food chain and more value than would be otherwise earned or given to them by the Gvmt. Through taxation and redistribution.
      It may sound like a reiteration of yours, but it’s really about the exchange of money being more in the favor of residents than governments. It’s about the exchange not the trickle down, and it’s a generalized term for current conservatism more than Reaganism of the 80s. It’s been around since the beginning of capitalism, the term is only that, a term.

    • @davedoe6445
      @davedoe6445 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. The point of "trickle down economics" is to grow the whole pie for everyone. A profitable enterprise can make money for everyone involved, including the local community. A charity attempting to root a certain culture in a time and place is doomed to failure.

(As for the building, as an architect I too kind of like most of it, but I would never say it blends into the landscape. Responds to it, sure, but blends seems like the wrong term here... :)

    I recommend the wonderful video on supply-side economics by Political Juice for more information on how and why trickle-down actually works.
    That said, it's always nice to hear how the wealthy are not all greedy, grasping Lex Luthor types that the poor should be allowed to cannibalize. Wealth in and of itself isn't good or evil - it simply magnifies the good or evil in the heart of the one wielding it. Good people can do incredible things with wealth. It's up to the rest of us to let them.

    This is a very interesting concept to bring live and ....yes also money to the Island. It did creat jobs. That's definitely not about money for Zita Cobb, it's her business philosophy, and how she is trying to develop Fogo Island via tourism, local manufacturing. Of course it' s very expensive and minimum 3 night-booking policy, that's not for someone with even 300-500K annual income. However, since some people stay in that hotel, that' s good. Better than spending 7-15K CAD for 3 nights abroad. I like Atlantic Canada and specifically NL. Have been in St John's only and would like to discover Fogo Island. Me personnaly when I have heard about that INN, I was so surprised by the prices as there are a few cottages on Island. They are more than ten times more affordable, also have handmad quilts and amazing & mesmerizing view on ocean with beautiful sunset. But again Fogo Island Inn it' s more than just a hotel, that' s economic engine of Fogo Island.
