Why Dutch Van Der Linde is Rockstar's greatest antagonist [SPOILERS]

  • Dutch Van Der Linde's ego driven nature makes for one of the most interesting antagonists I have ever seen in a video game. Constantly at battle with his own ego, and willing to let go of people who consider him family if it puts him one step closer to achieving his goals. Hope you guys enjoy the video!
    Also THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR 150 SUBSCRIBERS (it's gone up since I finished the video, and will have probably gone up by the time this is uploaded). This sort of support means so much to me, and its crazy motivating to see so many people enjoying the content that I've made. The Arthur Morgan video is currently at 12k views, which is honestly unbelievable. Again, thank you all a ton. Hope you continue to enjoy what you subscribed for!

    I don’t think Dutch rejoined Micah at the end of the game. Micah says there’s lots of interesting visitors today, suggesting that Dutch turned up that day. When John asks what Dutch is doing there, he says, ‘Same as you, I suppose.’ Dutch intended on killing Micah, perhaps as revenge for Arthur, a man he once saw as a son.

      Maybe, i'd hope that Dutch was at least a little remorseful in the end!

      eyezayar I think it’s clear he’s a very different man by that time. He walked away from everything after he saw Arthur lying at his feet. And when we see him in the epilogue he says he hasn’t got much to say no more. Still held some resentment toward John but I’d like to think he was there to avenge Arthur.

    There is something that Rains fall said to Arthur that is very interesting and I think this is a key theme in the character development of Arthur and Dutch and that is the fact that over time men become more of who they truly are. I feel that Arthur was always a good man deep down but he struggled to express who he truly is as the only thing he's ever known was the philosophy that Dutch instilled in him. Once the gang starts to fall apart , Dutch slowly getting more insane and desperate as each of his plans continue to fail, and Arthur's TB finally starting to take affect on him, this all contributes to Arthur reexamining his entire life and he realizes that maybe his entire life was a lie. Arthur also gains a new perspective on his childhood as he notices how Dutch took advantage of Eagle Flies who was a young and angry kid just like him and John when they first met Dutch and made him commit acts of violence just so that the government can focus more of their attention on the Native Americans. This makes Arthur feel that maybe Dutch really just took advantage of him all along. During the end of chapter 6 it's implied that Dutch might of never cared about Arthur and John at all. I don't think this was always the case but I think that the failed Blackwater job was the start of his descent into madness as this was the first time that Dutch lost control and killed an innocent hostage which shocked most of the gang. Hosea even mentions that he feels that after the failed Blackwater heist, he feels everything's changed. I think the constant doubting from Arthur and John, the head injury during the botched robbery at the Saint Denis trolley station, and finally Hosea's death is what finally made Dutch lose all sense of morality and go against his own philosophy. Last interesting thing that I've noticed about Dutch is how he speaks to the gang members which eerily reminds me of real life cult leaders as he always preaches to everyone that they have got to keep faith in him and the plan.

    • @eyezayar
      @eyezayar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +164

      Thats a really good analysis man, completely agree. I definitely believe Arthur was a good man all along, he just learned to express it better when everything began to fall. Thank you for watching!

      But in the ending of the epilogue i really do think that Dutch went there to kill Micah because when you meet Micah he says "some interesting visitors today", maybe stating that Dutch also just arrived on that day and Dutch also says that he has the same intention as John. To kill Micah and avenge Arthur. Maybe everything you say of Dutch is true, but I think that when he witnessed his "son" die, he realized his wrongs even through his madness. In that mission we see Dutch emerge from his insanity one last time to avenge his fallen family.

    • @bluesrocker91
      @bluesrocker91 5 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      I picked up on the whole cult thing too...
      Personally I tend to think Dutch was a pure psychopath from the start... Psychopaths lust for control above all else, of their own lives and of those around them, usually achieved through lies and manipulation.
      1) Throughout the story, he displays bucket loads of the charisma and superficial charm associated with psychopathy, and maintains a front of compassion for others, while repeatedly showing his ability to kill innocents without remorse. He also shows the ability to turn it on and off at will, proving that it's really all an act. Early in the story he tells the gang he would gladly change places with those who have died. Exploring the camp at Horseshoe Overlook, you can find the same speech written out on paper, showing it was a rehearsed, planned statement, and not quite as heartfelt and genuine as it first appeared.
      2) Dutch maintains his control through the promise of a life of freedom somewhere in the West. As the gang begins to lose faith in this vision, he changes it, first to Australia and then Tahiti. As these promises become more and more unrealistic and his control of the gang is threatened, his actions become ever more reckless and violent, as he desperately tries to maintain their loyalty. Later, when the gang is disillusioned and broken, he seems to show indifference and even contempt towards them, yet turns on his charms and enthusiasm for the young Wapiti warriors, whom he knows he can manipulate and control.
      3) Showing the narcissism common with psychopaths, he never takes responsibility for his failures, blaming the gang for not having enough faith in him. He also takes great offence when Arthur "insists" he let the innocents go free.
      4) Even at the very end of his life, he still shows a need for control, choosing to commit suicide rather than be shot by John. Again, this is something that often happens with psychopaths. When facing certain death, given the choice they will often take the option that gives them the most control in the situation

    • @Domination1799
      @Domination1799 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@rmnlmao5569 I agree with everything you said about the fact that Dutch was there to kill Micah. I think Arthur's death was the last push for Dutch to finally realize that everything has gone to hell all due to Micah, that's why he left Micah and went on his own for awhile. When John goes to kill Micah, I feel that Micah was setting up Dutch and John to get caught by Ross and Fordham because both agents find his body and Ross looks disappointed, almost as if he was to turn Dutch and John in. It took John to remind Dutch of what Arthur and everyone did for him to finally realize that Micah needed to be put down.

It was the first time he lost control, and the first time his gang started to really question him, putting the first scratches on the ego that he never had to fight for previously.

    • @Nikolai12
      @Nikolai12 5 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      @@eyezayar It's not out of the realm of possibility for a DLC. I'm thinking we'd have to play as Dutch ourselves in the dlc, since the dialouge between Arthur and Dutch at the start of the game means Arthur wasn't even in Blackwater or doesn't know exactly what happened.
      Arthur: "What really happened back there in Blackwater?"
      Dutch: "We missed you, that's what happened."
      And I don't think we would play as John since that would be repetitive and tiresome and he apparently got shot during that timeframe anyway.

      Idk, I think he watched everything he built end, and maybe he actually thought what he wanted was actually attainable. RDR2 every chapter is the continual "we need one more score so we can all go somewhere else to live in paradise."
      After playing RDR2 I see Dutch's struggle, he has a pipe dream. And maybe the backwater job was supposed to be that. He keeps chasing ghosts like the Rhodes Treasure that is presumed just a myth.
      Then he gets sloppy in Saint Dennis. That's when shit turns south. I played like ya, let's see this vision, but after the bank job there that turned south his vision and story just turned south. After returning in chapter 5 he just seemed desperate. And with people leaving his empire was crumbling.
      I sort of feel like the next red dead might be another prequel. Simply because the first was in 1911 and the second right at the turn of the century. Maybe it goes back and shows the O'Driscole leader betray Dutch and maybe show what happened in Backwater? The series definitely started at the very end of the western days. So I could see that and enjoy it.
      Late in game, I was playing a mission, forget which one, but in traveling when u can choose to talk it brought up a couple names that weren't part of the Ditches gang all game. Thinking they could be the players antagonist or I guess just players character in the next one?
      Maybe the next one instead of rewarding you, to be honorable it rewards you, to be dishonorable? Idk, just a thought. If they went back to the time was the in the heart tof the wood west being an outlaw was more rewarding and the more desirable path?

    I genuinely feel sorry for Dutch. Most likely he went insane by the realization that the utopia imagined wasn't possible anymore. Actually, I don't think he ever was completely sane, or a realist at least. He clearly had a distorted view of the world, and coupled with his apparent talent at persuading people to follow him, that drove him to complete madness. He definitely had some goodness in him, he wasn't totally evil - most likely viewed himself as a "Robin Hood" kind of character -, but the weight of the world crushed him.

      Would’ve been lovely to play as Dutch even during this event.
      Had they done that before Arthur’s, they could’ve made it as though Arthur betrayed Dutch and Micah is this up and coming believer who is eager to make Dutch proud.
      You’d see things through his eyes first and you’d have to walk away from Arthur when he gets ambushed or that John leaving and being captured as few of the reasons why Dutch was betrayed.
      Arthur acting like Reverend (little do we know he has TB) and knowing that he would go behind his back and doing things and screwing up the plan.
      Arthur suddenly kicking Strauss out without Dutch’s approval and cementing the fact that he is trying to take control away from Dutch.
      John being bailed out by Arthur.
      Then Molly dropping the “I sold you out to the Pinkertons” news on top of that.
      The dreadful feeling of being untrusted by your family and always being questioned and having Hosea die.
      Then at the end, we would be faced by Arthur’s last stand and hitting Dutch with “I gave you all I got” leaving us confused by the revelation that he was never the enemy.
      Imagine all that and then we play Arthur’s side of the story and finding out just how much Dutch got played by Micah.

    I think one important thing to note is the head injury Dutch receives in the post office heist in chapter 4 of RDR2. Some people have suggested it caused his personality change but I don't think that's the case. The mission draws a lot of attention to Dutch's injury, meaning it must be important to some degree, and I think it's down to lobe damage. Damage to certain areas of the brain can reduce or remove inhibitions (search up Phineas Gage for an example) that cause the person to act far less rationally but with mostly the same personality. I believe that's what happened with Dutch; the potential for these acts was always there, and could have happened anyway, but the brain damage removed his mental inhibitions, while the death of Hosea, the one man that he saw as truly equal and always kept him in line, removed his external inhibitions.

    • @eyezayar

His earlier attitude was never entirely genuine but it was at least in good intent and he was clearly loyal and willing to put himself on the line for others, as time went on and events transpired, he became worse, but it's only after the head injury he becomes so entirely reckless and selfish, like when Arthur meets him at the bayou before they raid Bronte's manor and Dutch is mumbling about "the game." I found that cutscene to be a jarring change as for me it was the first quest after his head injury, and he felt incredibly off.

    He’s such a good antagonist that I didn’t even realize he was an antagonist until I thought of it! It’s so hard to describe, but with the realism, amazingly good lines, character development, etc. etc. I didn’t see an antagonist, I saw a man slowly being degraded by his own demons. Hosea dying was the last straw. It felt like an actual family member was slowly going insane. It’s so hard to fucking describe the amount of immersion, caring, and emotion I’ve had for this game! Damn rockstar, you’ve made a masterpiece so good that I can only describe it as a movie-type video game.

    Yeah tbh I think you would have needed to play RDR1 to get the full impact of the story. Honestly when I found out this was a prequel, I was skeptical because we would already have a vague idea of who lives/dies and what ever else happens. What ended up happening was that through Dutch and Arthur, I became completely enthralled with the ambiguity of HOW it was all going to unfold. I often found myself questioning whether Dutch was an objectively morally good man at the start, "help folks as need helping and shooting folks as needs shootin" and questioned if Dutch actually did start out genuinely caring about those around him, or if he was always a sociopathic monster that sought to use those he kept near him. If I were to say, I'd say Dutch started out as a good 'enough' person to those that knew him, or else he wouldn't help people like Arthur, John, Tilly or Lenny. I never really considered that Dutch could TRULY be evil until Hosea and Lenny died in the Saint Denis bank job gone wrong. That was the moment Dutch's world, and moral questionability crumbled around him, because Hosea was one of the ones constantly arguing with Dutch over the right way to live or do jobs, basically the angel on his shoulder and without that influence, Dutch just proceeded to b-line straight down a dark and evil path.
    For me, Dutch's descent into madness started when Hosea died, but the last shred of any goodness Dutch may have had left in him died with Arthur

    • @eyezayar
      @eyezayar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Playing RDR1 definitely makes the events of RDR2 a lot more powerful. It just adds so much context to the game in general. And I actually agree with you, if i could change a bit of this analysis i would make more clear that i think Dutch wasnt completely horrible to begin with, and that he definitely had some good in him before he went off the rails. I do think that his overbearing ego was always present, but i agree that he didnt become truly evil until the death of Hosea. That was the final nail in the coffin. Thanks so much for your comment and for watching man, means a lot!

      It was a great video, like you said Dutch really is one of the greatest antagonists ever. And I think a part of that is how everything he does is handled in such a way where nobody, at least not I, can definitively say that he was a truly good or evil man. Maybe I'm just an idiot. But your explanation of his ego and character in general makes a lot of sense and put a lot more perspective and insight into his character than I already had. Great work 👍👍

      I agree and disagree at the same time. I played 2 before 1 and let me tell you, it hurts a whole lot more. The only thing I knew about RDR1 was John's death. By not playing RDR1 you feel like maybe just maybe Dutch will get you all out of the mess and everything will work out. By not knowing how things were gonna end, you always have a sense of hope and when Arthur gets sick it is even more devastating. Then as events start to spiral out of control and the gang truly hits a "free fall" situation, it just helps you connect with Arthur. The way your hope vanishes alongside his for the gang. You start to become more distrusting of Dutch and you know there will eventually be an end to your relationship with him, but when the stand off happens you believe Bill and Javier will side with you. Keeping myself away from anything to do with the first game was just coincidental, but it was the best thing I could have had happen.

    My love for Dutch will need to be pried from my cold dead hands. I loved this, but I have never agreed with the analysis that Dutch was always a cold, evil man. He took a band of disenfranchised people in, taught them how to read, saved Sadie, genuinely was disgusted by the mistreatment of Native Americans in the earlier chapters, (of course he manipulated their plight later on) told Arthur to "never leave love aside," showed genuine concern for Arthur after his fight with Trewlany, and was even speechless - for the first time in his life - when Arthur was dying. I truly think Mica was the real snake in the grass, playing on Dutch's insecurities and mounting fears of a modernizing world. A lot of people seem to forget he was also suffering from severe head trauma after that train crash, and we saw his behavior intensify after this. Does this excuse his behavior? No, but it certainly is a factor.
    When John asked Dutch why he was with Mica at the end, he replied, "Same as you, I guess." To me, that implies that Dutch was also there to kill Mica. I think Dutch was a deeply flawed man, a grey character whose worse qualities were exacerbated by a manipulative person. Grey characters always make the best antagonists. He was a phenomenal character

      PriorP92 That is sooo true ! I was always thinking the same ! I deeply love Dutch as a character and he’s my favorite right after Arthur Morgan. I never really saw him as a villain, but I felt that he was crushed, confused and overwhelmed. When he saw Micah so confident and easy going, maybe he was like “hey... he’s the men I need.” Also, because Dutch refuses to show his weakness, he just follows Micah blindly without thinking cause he’s sure that anyway, his plans are good since his always fail. Anyway, I just feel like Dutch is a complete victim of Micah. Micah took great advantage on his situation to control him and tear the gang apart.

    Dutch isn’t an antagonist though. He shot Micah on top of Mount Hagen because he realized John was right and he was there to get revenge for Arthur. John asked Dutch why he was there, and Dutch said “same reason you are I suppose” and then he shot Micah. Not only did Dutch let John go, he also left the money to John as a way to apologize and let him establish his family.
    In RDR1 Dutch is also not an antagonist. Dutch never comes hunting after John. It was John who came to kill Dutch. And sure the two shot at each, but in the end, Dutch threw down his weapon. He didn’t have a final shoot out with John, he gave up and killed himself. But not before warning John that the government was going to turn on him next-and Dutch was right in the end. Dutch was right all along.

      J Smith Exactly my thoughts on Dutch! He was never truly evil, or even psychotic imo, he was just driven mad by grief and his failure of achieving his delusion of grandeur. Micah took huge part in that by driving Dutch to do bad things and also in ratting out the gang and getting many killed, specifically Hosea. I do believe it was Micah who ratted about the St Denis bank even though Milton said they picked him up after Guarma. Anyway, with Hosea gone and Arthur growing weak, Micah finally pushed Dutch to his breaking point and he betrayed John and Arthur. It only took Arthur calling out Micah at the end to make Dutch realize he was wrong in trusting Micah. Arthur’s death finally pushed him over the edge and he went somewhat rogue over the next few years. There was just one thing left he had to do, and that was to take revenge on the man who caused him to lose his family and his hold on his own beliefs. After Micah was finished, nothing really mattered to Dutch anymore and he went rogue, knowing he has already been defeated, finally admitting to himself that it was over and he failed. He even let John have the money and have his family, and when John came for Dutch later, he warned John that the Pinkertons would kill him next, and he was right. In the end, I feel that Dutch’s story is even another example of redemption. Anyway, thank you for reading my TEDTalk on Dutch.

To me he seems like the leader of a cult who uses the rejects of society to further his goals of accumulation of power, wealth and revenge. He takes in John and Arthur as kids probably because he understands that if he can influence them at a young age he will be able to control them forever. However as soon as he starts to see John and Arthur as liabilities rather than assets he would rather they were dead. He leaves John to die 3 times and Arthur to die twice.

    Personally I’d say in 2 he was never really the antagonist, like he was good for most of the game got played by the actual antagonist and only bad thing he did was choose Micah but like I said he got played
    In rdr1 he was one of the antagonists no doubt

    I really felt sorry for Dutch this whole time. Once you fuck up that much, admitting that your wrong must have been incredibly hard for him knowing the entire pressure of the gang he had on him. Dutch was my third favorite character next to Arthur and John because he really had good inside of him, it was shown clearly through the first parts of the game that he was trying to help the gang. Sadly, he was just a slave to his ego, and he couldn’t control himself. When Arthur dies and Dutch says “I...,” that was the moment he knew he messed up everything. He had so much potential to be a great man.

    In my opinion Dutch is a perfect representation for Narcissistic Personality Disorder(NPD). Most people I met who struggle with NPD have a raging God complex, thinking they're different or the "special one". They are masters of manipulating their image around others, telling you what you want to hear. Like how Dutch preached his code and ideals of living free and away from civilized society's laws. He found disenfranchised people, and overtime brainwashed them into doing his bidding. He also seems to be threatened when he finds out Arthur has been talking to John about possibly leaving.
    All in all, Dutch is actually quite similar to Micah. The only difference between them is that Micah doesn't hide the fact he has NPD, he is openly aggressive, and does not care how his actions effect others. He doesn't care for Dutch either, rather how Dutch can help him achieve what he wants, or as he calls it "winning". If you think about it they're perfect for each other. Poor Arthur deserved so much better. Great video.

    The way I see it, Dutch was a genuine character with genuine morals. Every time something would go down (Pinkerton's or a rival gang), Dutch would be the first to speak up, give orders that kept the gang alive during gun fights and made sure everyone was accounted for when the smoke cleared. Even in one of the final showdowns at Beaver Hollow, Dutch yells for everybody to move the second the guns go off. Dutch had a plan (pun intended), but it was something that couldn't have been done. As Dutch spoke of at the ending if RDR1, their time was over. Civilization, government and law swept across the land and they were the last of the true free beings. Dutch was desperate to make his dream a reality and cling to that way of life. The gang, ALL of the gang, were important to him, not just because they were useful, but because they were his family. Something happened in Blackwater...and I believe that failed job and realization that their way of life cannot exist in a world so polluted by government, business and people...is the reason things went downhill. With each progressive failure and death, Dutch became more and more desperate to keep the gang afloat and loyal...just needing that ONE big paycheck to achieve freedom and a new life for himself and those he cared for. Dutch was a magician out of tricks, an escape artist without a lockpick, a man who had succumb to the realization that he was human, made mistakes and people had and will continue to die if he would keep chasing this dream. The irony of Eagle Flies and Rains Fall, natives who pursued a life not unlike Dutch, but would strive for peace and life over war and death in a battle they could not win. Rains Fall lost his son in the same way that Dutch lost Arthur...yet Dutch fought on. I honestly believe Dutch was a good man who simply invested and ultimately lost too much to give up. It was his dream or death...and he died fighting for what he believed in. THAT is what makes him such a great antagonist.

    I believe that Dutch was a good man, who was affected by tremendous loss. After the death of Hosea, Dutch overcame a huge transformation. I seriously believe that Dutch didn’t go back with Micah after Chapter 6, because we know that Micah started running his own game. I think on the mountain Dutch redeemed himself not just shooting Micah but leaving John the money. I think he forgave Arthur and felt bad about everything that happened, I also believe that he killed himself so that John didn’t have to kill the man who was practically his father.

    • @mcslammer4989
      @mcslammer4989 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I feel like Micah's plan was to rid Hosea to become Dutches right hand, since it seems Dutch and Hosea went over each other's plans to ensure they would most likely work. Without Hosea the plans became rushed and unpolished which ,Micah probably wanted to get everyone killed and keep enough money for himself. From the start you could tell he wanted to kill Arthur on account of his ugly moustache.

    I have no idea who's gonna see this but I would just like to say. Dutch Van Der Linde is my favourite character from anything ever. I think his character growth from rdr2 to rdr1 is beautiful. And not many people might say this because he's the "bad guy" but I genuinely feel bad for Mr. Van Der Linde. He was a good man. Him and his gang, his family. But he slowly lost it. People died, people changed him. He turned from almost a father into a genuinly bad person. And his final conversation with John at the end of rdr1 stuck with me. Because he was.... Right in my eyes. When he's gone, they'll just find another monster. Idk. Dutch is just so interesting to me. I love him. Good guy, bad guy, however you see him. He had a plan, he loved his people. But it just crumbled. I feel for him. I mourn for him and his gang. I could be a "bad" person for seeing dutch like this but..... Like I said, I feel for him.

    What's interesting is that in the low honor "go for the money ending", despite Dutch being correct in suspecting that Arthur would betray him and catching Arthur at his lowest moment, his dying words finally breaks through to Dutch causing him to see Micah for what he was and abandon him. Dutch's had been going through a negative character arc throughout the story where he'd believe in a lie and continue to commit to that lie more and more until he finally accepts the truth despite the fact that logically he shouldn't be believing in Arthur when he went for the money.

    Arthur mentions that prior to the events of RDR2 there was only one member killed in the camp and he deserved it. Sounds like an early member of the Van Der Lind gang may have grown a conscious and tried to redeem himself. Could be a premise for a prequel about the beginnings of the gang, starting with the death of Dutchs brother by the O'driscoll's. That is, if they wanted to keep it about the same core characters. Arthur could even be the one to kill you at the end.

    :play as Arthur/John/Dutch in the black water heist or even the setups for it.
    :play as Jack Marston (John’s son) and carry on with the building of civilisation
    :play as a different gang in a different part of America and build up the storyline from that
