I think LoD is the big thing that could make or break SC. Pop in is one thing, but the more important issue is maximum draw distance. Buildings on planets like bunkers usually only appear once you're about 2km away, that not only breaks immersion but is quite problematic for stuff like exploration/scanning or even electronic warfare. We already have torps ingame that have a 20km range, which is far beyond the max draw distance of ships. This will become a huge issue once actual large scale cap ship fleet battles are introduced.

Someone else mentioned in the comments that engines are built pretty robust. Honestly I feel like the biggest determining factors for a lot of games “being out of date” Is how much detail the developers put into asset creation. Crysis 3 would not look the way it does even now if the developers hadn’t created super high resolution textures for the game, even though most people wouldn’t even use them until years later. We know CIG is nothing if not detailed. We don’t even have graphics settings in the game yet. Im sure the developers have done their fair share of future-proofing assets

A game in development this long and with this large a budget, would have to be mindbendingly spectacular, and if it ever releases, it's more likely to be an empty shell, that's some small core of people will throw money at. Like a Flight Simulator, but in space.

I meeeaaaan the fun with SC is the fact that it's a semi-sandbox game. A lot of the fun with it comes from the players and what they come up with. It's like how Minecraft or Halo are still fun today. It's not the game itself but the experiences.
Playing the past 3 weeks daily with my group of friends, we've enjoyed salvaging and mercenary work, and messing around with randoms. So long as they keep providing us with new tools and stuff to mess around with, the game will continue to be relevant. It just needs optimization... if only this games performance was stable, I feel like people wouldn't have a problem with how long the development is taking.

Cyberpunk is actually a really good comparison as their texture fidelity isn't anywhere close to Star Citizen. You can press your face up against an elevator door in SC and see microdetail but you'd need a mod to do that in Cyberpunk. Yet it still looks beautiful. Take it from someone with over ten years experience as a cine artist and vfx sup, any time someone says "the graphics are amazing", 90% of it comes down to well placed lighting from a talented artist.

I believe they mentioned that all their assets are built in 8k to help future proof them. Also, if you read the most recent monthly reports, they talk about updating lighting with global illumination and even mention raytracing. As for the pop in assets while flying around I am not sure if or when they will tackle that. I do believe though that they will increase the density of assets on a planets surface as these assets get less expensive as a percent to modern hardware.

    • @SuperFriendBFG
      @SuperFriendBFG ปีที่แล้ว +9

That's correct. In fact, any "high fidelity" modern game more often than not can be updated in a similar way because it's when you export the assets into a readable form for the Engine, it automatically handles the downscaling based on your settings. With how Physically Based Materials work, you don't have to actually change texture in Photoshop, you just load a plugin in Substance Designer and re-export your textures after a few tweaks in values. Those textures that are custom authored tend to be produced in VERY high resolutions and then downscaled when imported into the game. It's often times similar with 3D Models where an ultra high poly mesh is created to generate Height Map Data and such, that same mesh can be run through the new exporters in order to support modern LOD tech.

    • @billywashere6965
      @billywashere6965 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Also, most of the devs SC has built up the Cryengine in the first place, they are really good and up for the task of mantaining the engine current. Amazon with only one game that generated hype to it's name might help with the engine they share with CIG. From the settlement CIG got with Crytek they could get via plugin some tech they don't have right now. I was worried too for a while but I think it won't be an issue for a long time.
Still the best way to furutreproof their engine now it would be to release S42 as fast as possible and use that money to develop the engine further instead of building the boat as they, and their backers, navigate with it.
With the multiplayer part having "less graphical umph" is not that unexpected. Even right now there are not that many MMOS with this level of fidelity and they tend to more cartoony isntead of focusing on hyperrealism, so in that front CIG is really safe. Their time runs out, again like Levelcap said "kinda", with S42. The sooner they finsih, the sooner they can start devleoping the next one and improve the tech

I think they can do it, but they would need to release S42 that is their big way of pushing forward on engine improvements, the more they delay it the more difficult it gets to add pluggins or tech to be on par with future games.
If they release it, they have really good devs, some built Cryengine back in the 2000 and I think that with their own render tech and Vulkan they can develop a lot of amazing tech similar to Unreal's. Plus Chris lets them expreriment a lot more than normal companies do. Planet tech is a good testament of that, it wasn't planned to get done as early as it did

So is Star Citizen, which unlike Starfield, is not only multiplayer, it's on track to be massively multiplayer.
Many people seem to not understand that CiG was taken to court on two continents, and both courts found no shenanigans going on. Both courts determined it was NOT a scam.
Now, to comply with the law, they have to focus on SQ42 first. So while they do have people working on the PU, it's no secret that SQ42 gets priority.
They are also working on a couple of key technologies to make the game work on a massive scale, such as the systems that will make all the star systems work together as one living, breathing galaxy.
Some will say, "But they've been working on the game for 11 years. Not true. First, let me point out that other, less ambitious games took 10 or more years. But the game we are presently playing, was not started in 2012, or before. Technically, the present game was started in 2015. What's that you say? Yes, 2015. First, search TH-cam for (Star Citizen CitizenCon 2014 Persistent Universe Demo). Important things to note as you watch. First, the ships look completely different. That's because they are. They were rebuilt. Everything made before 2015 was remade. The second thing to note is that this demo shows what going to planets was going to be like. Cool looking for sure, but not even close to what we have now. Why? Because planets weren't going to be real. You weren't going to be able to just fly down at any point on the planet, and explore that location. Landings and takeoffs were to be scripted because they were actually a separate instance. The fire, smoke and clouds all obscure your vision while you are being shifted to that instance. This was going to be more like the industry standard. Similar to what Starfield is going to do.
So why did things change? I mean, they could have had the game out much sooner. But, they chose to go epic in scale and detail. Why? Because of the community. We demanded this. Similar to how the Devs for No Man's Sky were being beat up and crazy demands placed on them by the community, the same thing was happening to CiG and Star Citizen. I was in the huge thread where people demanded real planets. CiG initially said they couldn't do it. Some people got outright nasty, bringing up the amount of money they had raised, which was near 50 million at the time.
So CiG sent out a survey, asking the Backers what they wanted. It was a very big survey...not just a handful of questions. Bottom line...the Backers who took the time to answer, wanted the game to be more, and they wanted it to be EPIC. A contest they did called, "The Next Great Starship" also had an impact, because the teams were making amazing ships, so some people got nasty, saying they were way better than what CiG was doing. Well, it was true, but CiG was trying to get a game out quickly, and was to industry standard...but could of course be better. During the competition, Chris Roberts himself said, "We are going to have to up our game," or similar words saying the same thing.
So everything changed. Everything made prior to 2015, has been remade. The focus shifted on Squadron 42, also. Yes it was intended to be a single player game, but not the epic experience now in production. The main reason for its existence, prior to 2015, was that as a single player experience, it was going to be in actuality, a tutorial for Star Citizen. But again...the Backers wanted more, and they wanted it to be EPIC. So this is what they are getting.
The AI is something else that is currently being worked on. Remember, high fidelity is the key. They weren't happy with the AI. So, they listened to the Backers, and want to give them the Epic they demanded...so the AI is in the process of being overhauled. They aren't far off from completing it, from what I heard.
This goes way beyond NPCs standing on tables and chairs. We've seen a few glimpses. Simple stuff like how they traverse, to how they actively search for you and engage you. Looking behind crates, in hiding spots, etc., and how they operate as a team, with some providing covering fire, from good cover, to some flanking, to some pushing your position...but they can and will switch up what they do. It's not a hard set role they have. So one who is covering, may begin flanking you.
As for there ever being a game...there already is a game. We play it every day. I know it's called an Alpha, but I see it more as a Live Service Game. We have a game to play. They are just going to keep adding to it.

Unreal is different from Creation Engine but how Starfield is set up is pretty much exactly how Unreal developers would approach it given the limitations of the technology.
Unreal 5 has by far the most sophisticated and robust content streaming backend out of the popular non-proprietary engines as of 2023; but Star Citizen is on a completely different level. @@REYfromTX Star Citizen is obviously released, it has been since the day I bought it back in 2014 as I bought the product, then immediately played it, which is how a released product works.
What you mean is it hasn't been abandoned yet, at some point in videogame development, we cut corners, shrink ambitions and let things go to round out what's been done, because you're making a market product and need to immediately get it out the door to move on to the next one to stay afloat.
This game didn't follow the traditional business circuit because it never began that way, the consumer base voted to "not cut corners" and "work on it as far as possible" early after the Kickstarter because funding was massively higher than necessary for the very small initial game, so the vote was called, and the vast majority voted for this to happen, so they followed their consumers/publishers demands.
It's entrepreneurial top contour is much more like significantly successful startup software with a one time purchase, the consumer buys it, they have it forever, but additionally so long as the consumer base remains it is constantly expanded upon, until demand has depleted.
But of course simultaneously they are following the traditional model with Squadron 42, which like any single player only AAA game, we can't play until it's been let go. Really, over 600 staff probably isn't enough, given Red Dead Redemption 2 had over 1600 and over 8 years without much engineering innovation.
A chunk of these years were given exclusively to the engineers to do various things in tandem that have never been done in an engine that doesn't support it, which can't be said for almost any game available, as that's typically reserved for the game engine staff themselves to be commissioned to do.

If they just finished the game and worried about visuals later, they would realize that they don't need cutting edge realistic graphics to have a good game, and they could always continue improving the graphics after release. But since they're never releasing the game, worrying about not being the bleeding edge on release is just another excuse to never launch.

And you missed the point about Starfield. It was never meant to have a space flight system like SC or NMS. Starfield is a typical and true Bethesda RPG. It's Skyrim or Fallout but in a space setting. The focus of Starfield is still the stories, narrative, quests, dialogue choices and freedom. Nobody asked for a flight sim. However, the elephant in the room with this game remains the fact that after all these years and half a billion+ spent on it, there is still no definitive pathway to release. Someone at CIC at some point needs to make a decision that the engine development has reached a point of maturity where the work to finish the game can be completed and the game released. Otherwise we're locked into this never ending development cycle, of incremental improvements with no final product. Then again, maybe this is all we're ever going to get: maybe we're really in a live service game, but they haven't announced its' official release yet. It's beginning to feel that way...

With the shift towards profession work and a nice round of major back end work and mechanics being implemented and worked on at once, we might be heading for that soft launch in maybe 3 to 5 years. Yeah, many people don't get immersion as a feature. SC is by far the most immersive game I've ever played. Attention to detail and making everything seamless and first person oriented (like real life) adds a lot to it.

@@ivoxx_ even down to the water vapour hitting the glass as you enter a planet or cloud cover. I was just above a planet and as the sun was coming up it looked amazing seeing the planet getting lighter. There so much going on with this game. Least you can debate about this game, you can't do that with starfield. Starfield has got to the point people are that excited about it and buying really expensive rigs to play it is getting really hyped up.

@@Make_Saabs_Great_Againpersonally I believe everyone hyping Starfield to high heaven are expecting a game that Bethesda never had any intention of making. It’ll be fun sure, but their demos have been very deliberate to show that it is not SC or even No mans sky.
A lot of people are going to be disappointed when it comes out because of placing expectations that they made up themselves
