The Legend of Zelda Theory: Masks of Hyrule and Termina

- The masks of Hyrule and Termina are mysterious, yet powerful items. Depending on the mask, the power the wearer is gifted with can range from added strength, mysterious abilities or even a transformation into a different creature. There are a few masks in the Zelda universe that seem pretty harmless, yet contain a mysterious and sometimes even morbid origin. In this theory I'm going to find the origin and use of three masks; the Spooky Mask, the Skull Mask and the All Night Mask.

Hello. My daughter and I love the "Zelda" game series, and for fun, my daughter came up with a few theories of her own.
The first one is that she noticed hanging on the wall behind the sculpter in "The Wind Waker" in his studio (The Nintendo Gallery) the masks of "The Bunny Hood", a "Goron", and I think a skull mask. She has a theory that the Sculptor is a descendant of the "Happy Mask Salesman". I think he is the original creator of the masks, hiding out from his fate on a deserted island, and when he has completed his sculptures, he disappears.
The second theory we have come up with is who built all the treasure chests containing the replenishing items, keys to the dungeons, and the dungeon maps. Since we don't ever see anybody else in any of the dungeons, and many of the dungeons look like they had not been visited or used in a long time, we suspect that the person who places those items there is the only one who needs them, and that person is the only person we know who can travel in time, Link himself. We think that when Link is first locked in time for seven years in the Temple of Time in "The Ocarina Of Time", he used that time to travel back and forth in time placing maps, compasses, and helpful replenishing items for all of the versions of Link in each game to use. When he comes out of the Temple of Time as an older teen, he is much more mature than most young people his age, so it means he had already seen much of the world and the universe through his time travels. he could not save the lands or the villages during their troubled time, but he could help save himself and his descendants by helping them through their need for useful items to assist them and replenish them along their journeys.
The third theory is that there are two possible theories about Link's origin and who he really is throughout the series. We think it really did all start with the very first "Legend of Zelda" video game, with the old man giving a young Link the very first Master Sword. In some games it says that "Only a member of the Royal Family can hold the Master Sword", and in other games it says that "Only the True Hero Can Wield the Sword that Has the Power to Banish Evil's Bane". We think Link is BOTH. We think the original old man is Link himself, having traveled back in time to give the Master Sword to his own ancestor, the first Link, to ensure he receives it. The maker is the Goron of the Ocarina of Time, and Link travels back in time to place it in his ancestor's hands. The very original ancestor of Link may not have been a member of the original royal family, but he may have been a distant cousin, which would have allowed the original Link to handle the royal family's sword. But in most old fairy tales, it was common for a cousin or a common man to do an incredibly brave deed, rescue the princess, be declared a hero, and marry the princess as a reward. Therefore, all of Link's descendants become part of the royal family. We think Link of "Ocarina of Time" is a descendant of this branch of the family tree, and so is Link from "The WInd Waker". it would explain why their mothers fear for their lives when they are born, why Link in "Ocarina of Time" is born without a fairy and is hidden away in the forest by his mother, and why Link lives with his grandmother on a faraway island until he grows up, because as members of the royal family they would be dangerous or threats to Princess Zelda's family line. But as true members or descendants of the original Zelda, they would be qualified to handle the Master Sword and have the same courage as the original Link to continue to battle evil.
We just thought they were fun theories to share. We thank you for sharing YOUR theories, for they have so far been the best and most completely thought out.

Heheh I remember I was pretty surprised when I found out the Skull Kid was potentially hundreds of years old from reading the Four Giants story from Anju's Grandmother :p.
Your videos are amazing for us nostalgic zelda fans who like to revisit the games over and over and over, and your theories make a lot of sense to me. They get automatically absorbed into my headcanon. Keep going, these are great.

I always really enjoy when Vortexxy would show bits of her sense of humor. The way she said "yuck" made me smile. I saw in a comment she left that she really enjoyed making these mask theories.

Vortex, I was literally just thinking about Zelda mask theories the other day. Mostly about how the sages in Twilight Princess also wear masks. What kind of connections are there between "good" and "evil" masks? I hope you do a part 2 on this! :)

Just a heads up, guys, as if you're like me, the last mask REALLY freaked me out, but I have some good news: FFI (disease described in the all-night's mask) is genetic that usually sets in around middle age. About 100 people have it in the earth. It is EXTREMELY rare. Chances are, you don't have it. What a relief, eh?
But, it's an interesting idea, as it does somewhat illustrate what happens to the human brain when sleep is removed, and it would make sense that, in a world where masks have magical powers, one would make a mask to institute such symptoms in an effort to torture people by taking away their ability to sleep. Very interesting. And to think all I used to think about this mask was "what a rip off" and "cool, two pieces of heart!"
It's interesting how one sentence can change the entire outlook on an item :) There's a lot more in Zelda that's hidden away like this too ^^
Awesome video as always, I never knew about the gossip stone discussing the "All-Night Mask" thats...seriously creepy. Stuff like this reminds me while Majora's Mask is my favorite game in the series along with Wind Waker. XD
Majora's Mask is one of the few games where I really question the E for Everyone label xD

A friend once told me that the all night mask was an intelligent device to make you look like if you were awake, when in reality, you were sleeping deeply. But it was probably a joke, since I haven't found any evidence to prove it XD

I would love to see a Theory video on the Zoras. Specifically, why they are a normal race in some games, an enemy race in others, where they disappear to in certain timelines, and the inconsistencies in their design in the games they are features. Just saying.
Simply put, the friendly Zora were intended to replace the enemy type starting with Ocarina of Time. Instead of replacing though, the two started to appear more often and sometimes even in the same game. Now they're separated from each other using the sea and river distinction.
I don't think the all night mask has red eyes painted on it. I think the "open wide bloodshot red eyes of the mask" are links real eyes and the mask forces the wearers eyes to stay open like in the film "A Clockwork Orange."
But they are red even when he's not wearing it.
Maybe once skull kid returned to hyrule after being banished from termina, he wanted the skull mask form link to be more intimidating once he returned to termina

Got anything interesting for the Animal Mask line? (Bunny hood, Keaton mask, Don Gero's mask, Bremen mask, and Mask of Scents?) I know they they are based off of Star Fox, but I wonder if there are any in-game theories.

I may have mentioned this in another one of your videos but have you thought the Link never meets the Skull Kid but recognizes Link's scent because of Skull Kid's friendship with Saria. This is also assuming Link never learns Saria's Song after Zelda sent him back to his childhood. Please message If I didn't give details in a previous video explain more in-depth my theory. To clarify I'm not saying the Skull Kid in OoT and MM aren't the same I'm saying Link never meets him in OoT.
the 3d remake further confirms the all-night mask is indeed a torture device. Actually i think the bomber's notebook tells you that when you obtain it.

EDIT:....This was short could you do the other masks as well? Btw the Geurdo Mask is the only one that doesn't return in MM, wonder why...
to be honest, and this is just me. I think it was a mask of mockery, when you present the mask to the gerudo guard as child link at the beginning of gerudo valley, she says "hey kid, you got a lot of guts wearing that mask around here". I feel it's the equivalent of 'blackface' and maybe the devs saw that and chose to not include it in the new game. a little farfetch'd

I was planning on 100% Majora's Mask, but after all he has been through, I don't think I'd want our dear Link to wear a torture device on his face.

The one about the Redeads was really cool. I always just assumed it was supposed to represent a Redead like a Halloween mask.
So that means that Someone can't just be transformed into a Redead? They have to be killed,buried, and resurrected?.O_o I now see why they skipped those 7 years.
The game initially makes it look like the spooky mask was modeled after the redead mask...but it's a real one. The redead are said to be reanimated by magic and they mostly appear near grave sites and tombs. So they do appear to be actual dead people who have been given the burial ritual. The appearance of the redead changes depending on the game, probably because the burial methods changed as well.

Okay, one sec. So MM skull kid is the same from OOT, but oot link taught him the song in the link to the past timeline, and yet skull kid knows about that in this other timeline...

I don't get why you say skullkid goes back and forth. Termina has a distorted timeline, it makes just as much sense that skullkid went to termina before link went, but after the mask ofc, and then got trapped there. but when skullkid got there it was ages before link ever got there, enough for him to do all sort of things. It's just there is no proof that backwards travel is possible. you would assume if it was when skullkid got majora's mask he would have gone to hyrule and done bad things too, but there isn't any proof of that (yet).
and while I'm on the subject... why do people still say link died an adult? because of the hero shades size? well if thats the issue then link died a giant... look at the size difference between the hero's shade and adult link... yeah, ok... I don't believe at all that stalchildren are actually children, I believe stalfos size is relivent to how powerful the person is when they die.

Nope, they're undead. Only Smash Bros. claims they're clay, but MM and WW directly refer to them as undead. I don't think we can take smash as canon when the games themselves state otherwise.
