What I love about Mark Holcomb is how he is showing that it is damn difficult to be a really good rhythm guitarist. Shredding is one thing but moslty during a concert you have to play some really tight riffs.
Captain Jaffar /Louis Montgelas/ saw These guys live, i could not hear one single messed up chord/riff in the 80 minute set, thats impressive as hell !
once I listened to them, without the vocals, immediately one of my favorite bands, just cant stand the singing, but the music behind it is amazing and interesting
I've got a strat with a les paul hum at the bridge and it's tuned to standard E but with a seventy- something low A on the bottom. the bass string is so large, it's tied in a know on the back of the bridge. and like me, it's awesome
i don't think he's entirely wrong because i think it still has a maple top with a quilted veneer on top of it. i think, i own the damn thing and i dont even know for sure lol
iamrichlol i hate to be that guy, but i was actually right, check that link to the prs siteor sweetwater.com. Mahogany body > maple top > quilt veneer
No i loved it! I appreciate Misha, Nolly and Mark on how they go about tone, by not using 1500lbs of gain, and instead boosting a much more reserved tone thats lots of bass mids and presence, and achieving and overall more aggressive tone.
Joshua Maletta hmm i will be one of the first to say the guys in P are the KINGS of tone, for real, but idk maybe its my phone or something but this tone sounds awful to me lol
rsrichyify I'll be honest if you show this tone to someone who can't really imagine a tone in a mix, they'd probably think it's not that great. The clarity is a good, and still very saturated. If this isn't the patch they used on the album, Its DAMN near close
Joshua Maletta yeah id agree its damn good considering its in drop a which is nuts. it sounds alot better in my car too, maybe its just the really low tuning im not quite fond of. either way i love them all the same! and the tones in p3 are absolutely ridiculous, theyre out of this world.
Kudos Mark, crushing riff on that song. Aces to discover I got it 98% right, just 2 or 3 notes out on the intro. Are we going to visit the 2nd verse riff in future eps?
This riff for me most definitely crosses over and pays homage to Sikth’s laid foundations of djent. Periphery have trailblazed their own path but what a lovely nod.
best riff off of Remissions 😅😅😅 I'm just kidding haha I love the guitar composition that went into this song, so beautiful and the tension builds so dramatically in many points, the octaves provide a very mistical quality to the sound as well.
Idk if anyone will see this, but whatever. I have a doubt about this tuning: I know it’s AGCFAD, so it’s basically D standard (or drop C, it doesnt really matter) with the 6th string dropped down to A. Now, this is also basically 7 string A standard tuning, skipping the low D string. So.. what would be the “right” short way of calling this tuning? Drop A or A standard? I know this isnt truly any of those two, but im just saying...
So, from what I've gathered watching a ton of videos about this, apparently it's still considered Drop A even though you can't play power chords with one finger in this set up. Something about how drop tunings really just consist of dropping the tuning of the lowest string. Although, I would tend to agree that it makes more sense to call it a Drop A variation. When you say Drop A to almost anyone, they immediately think of AEADGBE or AEADF#B depending on how many strings the guitar has.
Most of your "drop" tunings are simply dropped d down a number of half steps, but this is a different tuning. It's the same as "Drop B" down a whole step. Drop B is used by Tool in "Parabola" and "Prison Sex."
Killian Martin HAHA 😂😂. You know Prayer Position is played in the tuning I just said. Drop C with the 6th strings dropped to A. Periphery use that tuning a lot in the to get a heavier sound and you get octaves when power chording.
Shouldnt the tuning be AADGBE for there to be an octave relationship between the sixth and fifth strings? Mark here says that the first five strings are a step down whilst the sixth string is in A (AGCFAD) and in that tuning there is not an octave between the sixth and fifth strings
Kraken546 he's referring to the powerchord shape on guitar. I believe he says that in the video. It's not an octave tuning but you can easily play an octave by doing a traditional power chord shape
Mark I bought that exact guitar. I had to fix all sorts of stuff. the fret buzz is pretty bad too. also the pickups were very close to the strings. is this normal?
PRS is known for having pretty great set up out of the box, even the SE models. But sounds like you were a bit unlucky. If the guitar had to be shipped overseas, then its fairly common that the guitar reacts to the unusual climates and temperature changes during shipping, and needs a bit of extra set up.
I kinda had the same experience.. and you are right about the pickups being up there closer to the strings.. I guess it was meant to be close? who knows.
The pickups are probably set at a very specific height for all the guitars.... Its probably the neck and how it reacts to temperatures that is the problem. If you get a lot of string buzz, you'll know that's the problem...adjust the neck.
yeah but this guitar specifically has a 25.5 scale length right? that's pretty much fender strat type scale length. cant imagine downtuning it that low without getting the strings all wobbly. unless they're extremely heavy strings maybe
oh I told what the other day on a guitar world thing about some Jackson Monark, or however it's spelled, some Les Paul type guitars. a seven string with 24 and 3/4 scale. don't get me started. I prolly pissed some folks off, but it's funny. but really, why make a good guitar when the strings are gonna be flopping around in the wind, going sharp or staying flat....
His PRS SE ships with 10-52, set up in drop C. Presumably Mark had some input on what string gauge to use, but there's always a chance he's doing something different on his personal guitars too.
I own ibanez RGD, and I found it goes out of pitch when I set it to E standard. I thought different tunings need adjusted fret spacings for it's frequency rates.
Sure i know about saddles. I just had issues when I tune differently harmony goes wrong somehow, just like you can make your guitar sounds more dippressive by moving capo around. I thought that was sort of inevitable feature of frets. Maybe it's time to get true temperment...??
Mockingbird100 I play only in drop A or B standard tuning. I like loose strings on the bottom to get that djent song but it really depends on the guitar and your playing. I play with 24 fret guitars ( Jackson Rhoads USA ) and I use 12-52 daddario for b standard and 12-56 for drop A. Over 60 is not necessary if you ask me but you have to try and see what feels good for you
Actually not that uncommon. A lot bands like Tool, Soundgarden and RATM used a variation of this tuning for certain songs in the 90's (BADGBE). This is the same tuning just a whole step down (AGCFAD). It's a lot of fun to play around with!
Wow. Have you two girls ever heard of something called personal preference? Nothing is worse than people who think their choice in music makes them superior. It's obnoxious as hell.
boring. (I don't like the sound of this song) so don't get all butthurt over one man's opinion.... the technique is amazing but not my thing. now shut up and be an adult about this.
Torque Bow I mean it sounds boring I don't care about the timing if it sounds boring I have no motivation. I'll admit some of the stuff is complex but it's my opinion

mark is the man.....super creative, very humble, highly intelligent, and wants to give good information....a good dude to look up to!!!
If I had a dollar for every time Mark wears that shirt...
Skylark guy has poor personal hygene rumor has it.
Smelled alright when I met him.
Plot twist: He has hundreds of that shirt, but only that shirt.
I'll bet you'd have somewhere around ,,,800$ ??
At least he's not wearing *the jacket*.
i feel like misha was like lets use 8 strings and mark like ughhhh
theyre so fuckin creative
I used to hate on periphery until really sat down and streamed one of their albums.
Then the next... then the next...
once I listened to them, without the vocals, immediately one of my favorite bands, just cant stand the singing, but the music behind it is amazing and interesting
I love it when Mark does videos!
That tone is to djie for.
thanks for bringing this back!
I've got a strat with a les paul hum at the bridge and it's tuned to standard E but with a seventy- something low A on the bottom. the bass string is so large, it's tied in a know on the back of the bridge. and like me, it's awesome
Oh darn I though this was a lesson on the correct "player position"
Harrysound haha me too
It is to Asian people
@@EvilLadderGaming lame joke
YES! I've been waiting for this so badly
Very original and well thought out guitar playing. Wish I could have those fingers.
That SE.
Worth every penny. The top on mine is the best I've seen on a sub $1k guitar.
Manpod Donnigan veneer*
i don't think he's entirely wrong because i think it still has a maple top with a quilted veneer on top of it. i think, i own the damn thing and i dont even know for sure lol
its a maple quilt veneer, on top of a mahogany body.
iamrichlol i hate to be that guy, but i was actually right, check that link to the prs siteor sweetwater.com. Mahogany body > maple top > quilt veneer
That fucking tone. That tone. Sweet god damn jesus.
Damn he way chokes up on his pick grip. Gonna have to try that.
Dat tone
Joshua Maletta thought it sounded weak? or is that what your saying

I love players that are this good but at the same time has actually no idea of what they are doing theory-wise and note-wise
Kudos Mark, crushing riff on that song. Aces to discover I got it 98% right, just 2 or 3 notes out on the intro. Are we going to visit the 2nd verse riff in future eps?
How do you do the WAOH WA-KA-WA WAOH DKFGJDS:KGHJDSG as the vocals come in? Thanks, Mark (u my hero)
I dont even play guitar but that guitar tone is sex
Love how he says I'll play it slower and I still can't see what the hell he's playing lol.
mark holcomb's idea of a caveman riff is my standard. help.
This riff for me most definitely crosses over and pays homage to Sikth’s laid foundations of djent. Periphery have trailblazed their own path but what a lovely nod.
thanks for mentioning Sikth they were on one of my playlists but youtube randomly likes to delete things
I love that opening riff so much
this band is making me have goosebumps everytime I see just a name of the band in the video title
Didn´t Nolly write this song?
Yup, especially the ending riff with diminished scale run.
the second part is also the bass part, very cool
Aww he didn’t do the squealie right before the vocals kick in!
Damn this riff is soo hard to master
best riff off of Remissions 😅😅😅 I'm just kidding haha I love the guitar composition that went into this song, so beautiful and the tension builds so dramatically in many points, the octaves provide a very mistical quality to the sound as well.
love this guy
Idk if anyone will see this, but whatever. I have a doubt about this tuning: I know it’s AGCFAD, so it’s basically D standard (or drop C, it doesnt really matter) with the 6th string dropped down to A.

I'm super late to answer, but we call it drop A.
I guess it's called that because the low string is tuned lower than you'd expect for a 6-string.
I would say it’s a variation of drop a tuning. The safety fire has songs tuned in E standard with the low E string being dropped down to A.
i would call it drop A variant
So, from what I've gathered watching a ton of videos about this, apparently it's still considered Drop A even though you can't play power chords with one finger in this set up. Something about how drop tunings really just consist of dropping the tuning of the lowest string. Although, I would tend to agree that it makes more sense to call it a Drop A variation. I'm comparing this video to the isolated guitar tracks from the producer pack. Here he plays it slightly differently from the record.
Is this a repost or something? I feel like I already watched this. Either that or that Matrix is having a glitch.
Shit it must take alot of practice to nail such an advanced riff with a lower BPM metronome? I couldn't keep track at all, maybe I'm just a newbie
I found myself getting lost because of how the riff is accented. It's beyond my skill level. We gotta practice harder.
compared to Mark Holcomb, we are all newbies
imdartson same here... Jesus I got lost over the metronome.
What's the song in the intro
that's bad ass riff. as is Emperor.
Holy shit look at the length of his fingers!
This song is a challenge to play, had to change the thickest string to 62 to be able to tune to A xD
Most of your "drop" tunings are simply dropped d down a number of half steps, but this is a different tuning. It's the same as "Drop B" down a whole step. Drop B is used by Tool in "Parabola" and "Prison Sex."
This is Drop C but drop the 6th string to A. Just an alternative from their normal Drop C playing.
Nope this is just drop c. Nothing lower than that lol. Last string's not dropped to A
Killian Martin HAHA 😂😂. You know Prayer Position is played in the tuning I just said. Drop C with the 6th strings dropped to A. Periphery use that tuning a lot in the to get a heavier sound and you get octaves when power chording.
No i mean on this song. This song (blast inc) is drop c
oh boi I just realized i'm commenting on the wrong video rippp
Jesus Christ. He's like a guitar scientist lol
Then he and mark will both be scientists
Shouldnt the tuning be AADGBE for there to be an octave relationship between the sixth and fifth strings? Mark here says that the first five strings are a step down whilst the sixth string is in A (AGCFAD) and in that tuning there is not an octave between the sixth and fifth strings

It’s an octave if you play a power chord shape not open
Mark I bought that exact guitar. I had to fix all sorts of stuff. the fret buzz is pretty bad too. also the pickups were very close to the strings. is this normal?
Just needs a set up m8
PRS is known for having pretty great set up out of the box, even the SE models. But sounds like you were a bit unlucky. If the guitar had to be shipped overseas, then its fairly common that the guitar reacts to the unusual climates and temperature changes during shipping, and needs a bit of extra set up.

I own one as well, haven't had any problems with fret buzz. She's been good to me pretty much right out of the box.
Can somebody tell me why Mark always wears this Emperor shirt? Is he a big fan?
MRTNJRMS Mark is well known not to have the best personal hygene.
John Doe since when?
John Doe this isn't true haha. I went to their summer camp , he has other shirts, looked and smelled like a normal person lol
what string gauge does he use? arent those strings gonna be REALLY REALLY loose on that tuning?
aravis123 it depends on the scale length
yeah but this guitar specifically has a 25.5 scale length right? that's pretty much fender strat type scale length. cant imagine downtuning it that low without getting the strings all wobbly. unless they're extremely heavy strings maybe
oh I told what the other day on a guitar world thing about some Jackson Monark, or however it's spelled, some Les Paul type guitars. a seven string with 24 and 3/4 scale. don't get me started. he uses 11-56 on his personal
Beautiful
is this guitar's fret spacing fixed for whole step down tuning?? (instead of E standard)
What do you mean? The fret spacing is the same as E standard, you'd just have to re-intonate the guitar.
I own ibanez RGD, and I found it goes out of pitch when I set it to E standard. I thought different tunings need adjusted fret spacings for it's frequency rates.
You can adjust the length of the string at the bridge to make sure the guitar is in tune along the fretboard as much as possible :)
Sure i know about saddles. I just had issues when I tune differently harmony goes wrong somehow, just like you can make your guitar sounds more dippressive by moving capo around.
I thought that was sort of inevitable feature of frets.
Maybe it's time to get true temperment...??
what gauge are the strings???
I don't get how people have so much control over their fingers
Why isn't it 3/2
Cassius Battaglia why not 24/16?
i think hes wearing a "bump it"
Damn that riff is badsass.
dat Hair doe!! hahalol!!!
Nice emperor shirt
Who else got pissed as soon as he said triplet feel? Haha, great utilization though
What song is playing during the intro to the video? Such a sick riff
Business Monkey Omega by Periphery
Thank you! Forgot I asked this question lol
The metronome doesnt sound right. Oh wait, Periphery. Nevermind.
what title is name song
Intro song?
William Green Omega
Oh is this Sikth tuning? And on a prs
Matthew Curtiss no sikth is
G# g# c# f# a# d#
His is
A g c f a d
Sergio Valmont is still the SikTh tuning, intervalically speaking. That opening riff is pure death of a dead day
He's using the tuning in a similar way yeah
could anyone recomend me with a string guage that would be best for this tuning
11-56 i'd say, you could do 11-54 but this song in specific is tuned quite low compared to other periphery songs.
I use 13-62 atm, it's a bit too much. I'd say 11-54 is perfect but I've also used 10-52.
Mockingbird100 well 11-56 on G to D strings works great but the 56 is a little flabby so maybe change it up to a 64 or 70 for the low A.
thanks fellas
Mockingbird100 I play only in drop A or B standard tuning. I like loose strings on the bottom to get that djent song but it really depends on the guitar and your playing. I play with 24 fret guitars ( Jackson Rhoads USA ) and I use 12-52 daddario for b standard and 12-56 for drop A. Over 60 is not necessary if you ask me but you have to try and see what feels good for you
When did John Lennon join Periphery
tied in a knot. my bad.
I learned prayer position the day the album was released :)
intro song name, anyone?
Omega
What's the intro song?
Jesus I knew I recognized it but I couldn't remember. Thanks.
hail holcomb!
Didn't know that Singed420 is Pariphery guitarist
dat fretboard radius.
What tuning it is?
dani busoi
A version of "Drop A". Tune to D standard and drop the D down to A.
AGCFAD
Dude, mark, get another shirt. Even it’ll it’s another emperor shirt.
If that's a caveman riff, I'm not sure what that makes me
drop C or drop D?
Mario Anchieta
C
Fabián Riquelme
Not quite.
Mario Anchieta
"Drop A"
Tune to D standard and drop the D down to A
So AGCFAD
Tuning?
will deely
AGCFAD
cool
Aww Mraky knowin theory and stuff!
Mark seems like a really nice guy and is a great player but these riffs make absolutely no sense to me.
I know they work for them, but it not seems to have some kind of "soul" in it at all... his riffage on Haunted Shores had much more passion
Homer Dj0nt this is a riff written by Nolly
That's a good thing. :)
this song is a Periphery song, he's saying that Nolly wrote the song and mark is just "covering" it...
oh, i did not know that....
what gauge are those strings?
10-52
holy reverb lmao
Fuck yes
James hetfield will love this song 😆
why?
i lost it at "caveman"
I only say why he didnt tune a half step up his 7 string? HAHAHAHA
Unexpectedness 😂 over simplification lol
That's one of the weirdest goddamn tunings I've ever seen
Actually not that uncommon. A lot bands like Tool, Soundgarden and RATM used a variation of this tuning for certain songs in the 90's (BADGBE). This is the same tuning just a whole step down (AGCFAD). It's a lot of fun to play around with!
First
what is this supposed to be: music?
Yes. You need to clean out your ear wax idiot
Michael Haller
Shit, man. You're clearly a smart person, unswayed by public opinion and pop culture. You're doing great, man.
Wow. Have you two girls ever heard of something called personal preference? Nothing is worse than people who think their choice in music makes them superior. It's obnoxious as hell.
boring. (I don't like the sound of this song) so don't get all butthurt over one man's opinion.... the technique is amazing but not my thing. now shut up and be an adult about this.
and strumming basic chords on an acoustic guitar isn't, right?
kRVRKV TV no I don't like the melody the idea of triplets being played all over is cool but it's just a bit bland...
leigh richardson I wanna watch you play this and see how boring it gets.
Torque Bow I mean it sounds boring I don't care about the timing if it sounds boring I have no motivation. I'll admit some of the stuff is complex but it's my opinion
It sounds better with the other instruments added. Much like every other song.
I cant even play that fill part at his "slower" speed...ah well, suicide for me
I used to be a huge fan of Periphery, but not so much since they traded their 7 and 8 strings guitars for 6 strings...
thanks mark from priffry
Whats the song in the beginning??
Fernando Rivera
Omega
