Once again I make it through another day because of your show Andy. You bring such a great sense of humor to such serious topics. And this guys story is inspiring. Thank you to both men for being so humble.
This is wonderful. Have been hearing John Spencer in various interviews since February but hadn't heard his story and, wow, what a trajectory. Such an inspiration. Yuck on your the ear story. ;-) GREAT conversation. Thanks to you both.
The look of pure, joyous excitement on Andy's face when John Spencer says "Javelins... thousands of them" 😂🤣 That's a man with a real fondness for a weapon system.
This is such a great episode- how does it have less than 1k likes?! I would also love to see the section about Ukraine as it's own stand alone "short" or excerpt from this video. I think most people are afraid of the long format but this whole episode is great. Thanks again for all your hard work on these.
I really enjoyed this episode. It was nice to hear a different perspective from an Army soldier that had many life experiences. The end was a bit rough, as I wish the stabbing of one selves eye story was left untold. But I can tell Mr. Spencer was nervous and a huge fan of Andy like the rest of us. It is truly crazy because Andy had some rare moments in this podcast, either way great episode.
When I joined the 90s Army, it was the same thing John described. All SNCO and O billets were Ranger qualified billets in the regional airborne combat teams (1/501 for me). And you weren’t going to make E6 without attending pre Ranger at the minimum. It was common for E3’s to attend Ranger school as well. And they all copied the high and tight standards, Ranger PT standards, drop zone assembly time standards as Ranger BN. If you didn’t meet the standards, you were sent packing to a non-airborne infantry unit down the road. Good times….
I was an Army MP reservist 96-98 ish. WE were training in stacks and room-clearing THEN. (It WAS in the context of "hostage rescue", but there was, at the time, thought of as a core operating principle. MOUT was "it", even then.)
Debridement: the removal of infected or dead tissue from a wound to allow the normal healing process to proceed. Painful, nasty but essential in some circumstances.
If you aren’t aware of Retired Phoenix Police Officer Jason Schechterle’s horrific accident , please check it out. His story is a medical miracle, and a testament of extreme survival, unwavering personal strength and courage. The initial post injury surgeries ( debridement and beyond) required to save his life were harrowing, and his recovery (and reconstructive surgical journey ) is beyond inspirational .
Went to Iraq 2009-2010 on the Neurosurgery team. Received a crash course on debridement. The local men were terrible to their kids. When we weren't working neuro, we would help out the Ortho and General teams. Couldn't imagine the pain they were feeling. Unfortunately a burn victim experiences heat loss, so we had to jack up the O.R. temp 100-104. That sucked in the surgical gown, mask, etc. Plus you don't want your sweat to drop on the patient.
With all due respect to Andy and the guest - who are both obviously qualified in army matters- I respectfully the disagree to the discussion of the world order. America defines freedoms- as per their own standards and decides what other countries have a part to play in it. Not to take away from the loss of life in ukraine- but its time for America to fess up to the fact that the usa does not get to decide the worlds future. The order that '"Americans " enjoy and respect - comes at the cost of other countries following us instructions on foreign policy and trade regulations. Keeping the dollar as the trading currency for fuel and keeping the banking system and swift centred in the US . This is a hegemony . Again not commenting on the work of the warfighters - but the vision of the us world policy is that no -other country can challenge it. And this was bound to change eventually. Good commentary as usual from Andy.
Update: Mission *Wild Mustang Rescue* Down payment secured 600 acres outside Winnemuca, and another 1/4 acre in town with utilities. Assembling a crew now to work the new Lithium/Gold mines to fund the ranch build. Looking at April. Gonna finish this last contract, then jump in a foxhole/get an extra job. Forget Nevada, and just sit here and mow down bills, and gather personnel, water and ammo for the big push in April, just about round up time.
Found a good foxhole. Start at 0800 tomorrow at a scrap yard. Guy with a New York accent name of John. Owns scrap yards in multiple towns. Likes Ford's.
First day lunch. Scrap Yard Been unloading construction bins, separating cast iron/aluminum/copper spun motors/steel, tangled inn chain and clothes hangers, standing inn 6 inches of water. Each piece from the rear differential, to the tiny bolt must be isolated to produce the finest American metals, and tank armor, aircraft wing.
Same shit happened to me with the small pox vaccine, had broken service went back in and got it right before deployment to Iraq and got super sick 2 days in like a nasty flu with my shoulder swollen around injection site. Symptoms lasted nearly a week and a half.
I worked for a medical equipment company that dealt with wounds. Sounds like he had a devolving injury. Painful debridements if it isn’t done surgically.
I think this guy might be a little too far down his own rabbit hole. The Kool-Aid is being pumped into him through IV bags at this point. He especially lost me when he gave any credit at all to Gen Milley. But I guess it's inevitable when you work at the top for so long and spend most of your time in academia.
Yeah. Guys like him are why we lost. If he was such an expert in "urban warfare" and was advising generals this guy is basically just as liable as they are for how badly the war went over the past 20 years. But hey, he makes 250K a year doing seminars and writing books so who cares about his actual track record.
Between the fall of the Berlin wall and 2000 was Russia's lost decade. It was a depression 3x worse than the Great Depression in the USA. As perceived in Russia, Putin turned all of that around. They think they're going back to that lost decade if they lose, and General Miley stated that is the US goal. Russians would rather use tactical nukes in Ukraine than go back to that lost decade.
When he tells the story of the soldier who accidentally shot himself in the neck with that 9mm: We’ve all heard of Russian Roulette. I think we just discovered “American Roulette.”
I don't believe John touched on it but I'm curious what the dynamic looks like if Putin does use tactical nuke(s). What if he only uses one to take out Zelensky, and the rest of the world doesn't intervene what does that look like?
@ 2:01:30 (ish, "fall" of Kiev). Putin could say it "fell". Zelensky could say it did NOT. I DO know, only ONE of these men was given an Oscar by Sean Penn. ;)
One thing though, some things he says dont add up. Russian paras (200 strong, initial assault force) held the airport up until at least Mar.25 if not longer. If they were all desimated by the ukrainian units, how come ukrainians never recaptured the airport until after the russians withdrew from Kiyv altogether? If they all got wiped out by the ukrainians before the reinforcements arrived, what stopped the ukrainians from setting up in Hostomel and giving the arriving reinforcement the warm welcome. Just saying...
What treaty? If your talking about how they wouldn’t go east of east Germany that deal wasn’t real, it was just a loose agreement that was never actually formally agreed to. If I’m wrong about which agreement your talking about which one is it?
John Spencer: It is folly to fight a counterinsurgency on behalf of a corrupt government. Where does Ukraine fall on the international corruption index?
It was very interesting to listen him, except for the last part of the podcast. The fact that he really believes the story of a guy in a country that simply one day wakes up and decides to invade another country without any reason and because it's not a NATO country, that's delusional. And because of that then the US tries to justify spending tax payers money to fund another war, it's like we as society never learn... Andy shows a position of a wise man in comparison.
I find it hard to imagine this guy in "high level meetings at the pentagon" - he may have the knowledge and expertise but is a very poor speaker and is hard to follow.
I enjoyed the episode much like I enjoy most of Andy’s content. That being said, this must have been recorded a while before it was put out because once the Ukraine/Russia topic came up, the information being given was easily verified as outdated and incorrect. In fact some of what was said is “literal” propaganda that’s already been disproven a while ago. I’m not on either side of the conflict but anyone that watched this episode could EASILY debunk what this guy said. Depending on how fast you can read, it would take no more than 30 minutes. So again, I very much enjoy the content from this channel but shit got very weird once this guy opened up about the Ukraine/Russia conflict. You’d think the gentleman would AT LEAST give a synopsis about what was going on in Ukraine during 2014 and earlier. For me, anyone who talks about the conflict and doesn’t go into The Minsk Agreements, you really shouldn’t listen to.
The discussion around Ukraine is some of the most important I’ve heard and should be listened to by everyone. Great job and thank you!
He is incorrect. You can easily go look it up.
First time ever hearing of John Spencer. One of the best podcast I've seen in awhile.
Once again I make it through another day because of your show Andy. You bring such a great sense of humor to such serious topics. And this guys story is inspiring. Thank you to both men for being so humble.
Amazing episode! John Spencer spoke really well about Ukraine.
I'm taking this dude as my first-round pick in the armageddon draft.
Lmao 🤣 best comment ever
You better summon him soon

Holy shit Spencer! He and I were in Legion Co 1/508 ABCT together in Italy, he was mortar PSG. Been a while!
This was the first time I actually heard what is really going on in the Ukraine Russia War. Great podcast Andy once again.
This may be the MOST informative PC yet! Please have him back. I’d love to hear the things he Can’t talk about🍿
John Spencer is awesome. I’ve been listening to his pod “Urban Warfare” for a while. So cool to see him with you Andy.
Another great Monday Podcast!. I love it. My Dad retired from the Army after 22 years
Just getting started, but your podcast always helps my Monday morning.
Very informative interview with a big army guy who we dont hear enough of in podcast land.
John Spencer has a very informative podcast, thanks for having him on, he is very knowledgeable.

So glad and impressed that John created that booklet/military manual for the citizen soldiers of Ukraine!! Victory to Ukraine!

Followed John Spencer here to find a great podcast. At least we started alternate hand shooting techniques 2009
Very cool, first person I've heard on the podcast from Indiana let alone 30 miles from me.
In one breath. Super interesting. Thanks 🙌

“No”
“Opportunity missed”
One of Andy’s all time greatest lines
I sincerely hope this inspires some Opportunity Missed t-shirts, the deadpan is fucking legend 😂
that was a memorizing podcast
🍻 Everything about that story at the beginning rings true.

John has quite a background. Then again, does he. Glory Glory.
Fascinating story. Eye ball story made me sick. Very nice story of low probability to success. Thank you.
@ 16:00 "Lost your 'Budweiser'." XD Hadn't heard that one.
The seals trident is commonly referred to as the budweiser patch for obvious reasons if youve ever had the displeasure of drinking a budweiser.
Fucking awesome show. Though I love the funny ones with Glover and others, this was incredibly informative and interesting. Great stuff

The Ukrainian information was fascinating. The flooding/road signs etc.
