    Thank you for sharing your process and sharing that you dried it in the microwave. You are my kind of crafter - impatient to see the end result. I'm looking forward to seeing you use the threads and fabric in some slow stitching projects before too long.

      You are very welcome! When I get an idea I do get impatient to see how it will turn out! If it was summertime I would probably have left the threads to dry naturally and then ironed to fix but curiosity and impatience drove me 🤣. When microwaving I suggest also putting a cup of water in the microwave and only microwaving in 30 sec blast and checking each time :)

    Hi, I just found your channel and have gone on a bit of a binge. I’m a cross stitcher, EPP-er and primary school teacher and you’ve already given me a list of things I want to try either by myself or with my kids at school. Keep up the great work and thank you for the inspiration.

    Lovely Kooky! Reminds me of when I dyed silk scarves (that involved the microwave). I haven't tried Dye-a-Flow, only silk dyes and procion dyes. I will order some of yours and see how I get on. When I space dyed using procion dyes I didn't twist the hanks before dyeing as I found that the dye spread more easily, I left them loose and twisted them once they were dry. I also used to wash my threads in washing up liquid first, to strip off anything used in the mercerisation process. I hope that all makes sense. My memory is a bit hazy!

    • @KoolKookyKreatures
      @KoolKookyKreatures  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think that the procion dyes will be my next move Sue. The dye na flow is essentially an acrylic that acts like a dye and so I thought I would give it a shot. The cotton was a little stiffer when I first removed it from the microwave but softened up as I handled it. Thank you so much for the tips - I think next time I will try without twisting the hanks and pre wash as you said then see how that goes :) ❤️

    Looks wonderful, so bright and cheerful. Kool kookyness thread. Yep definitely market under this name. Very fun to watch. I did fabric with inktense this was fun made the fabric stiff though I washed and ironed it wonder is the tread stiffer with this dye. Will keep me eyes open to see if I can find here in NZ I know we have fabric dyes so thinking could use this on thread. Himm so interesting lovely video. Take care and drink loads of lemon or orange juice.

      Looking forward to the fabric play! They work great in the brush pens and markers (no clogging or drying up). I had used them that way when I was practicing lettering, but I don’t do much of that anymore. It’s occurred to me since seeing this video, that I might use the Dyna flow brush markers to paint fabric. 😮

    I would not recommend using the microwave like this. If the microwave doesn't have anything to 'cook'... it can essentially cook itself by concentrating heat onto the surface of the oven. Ask me how I know. Google "can I run a microwave empty" for more info. Sure, there is thread in the microwave. But I'm not sure it's enough to prevent issues.
    And I'm not entirely sure it is actually heat setting the thread since the microwave heats different materials at different levels. Have you tried a color fast test on it?
    Recently I wanted to remove some lines on fabric drawn with a Frixion pen (heat erase) and I held the piece (small) over my toaster turned on. It worked well pretty quickly without feeling like my fingers were in danger. Not sure how well that would work on the thread, though. The heat has to penetrate.
    I am keen to know how well the colored thread stiches - specifically, are you getting any color transfer from the thread to the fabric. I'm happy to hear about this product since I want to color fabric and thread but in small batches. I do have NeoColorII crayons and Inktense blocks but I haven't tried them yet.

    • @KoolKookyKreatures

      I looked up other things that can be microwave dyed (wool, silk etc) and it said that natural fibres were ok to be microwaved. I did it for short time frames (1 or 2 minutes) and it worked perfectly. They were on a microwaveable plate and also they were wet with water and dye. I also found on my internet search that there are microwave dyes that you can buy. This gave me the confidence to try it :). Next time though I may put a cup of water in there too just to be safe. :) 🥰

    • @KoolKookyKreatures
      @KoolKookyKreatures  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I will also check the colourfastness of the threads although I intend to use them on things that don’t need to be washed. The threads can be ironed if the microwave is not an option :)

      This is wonderful! Here in the states we have a company called Dharma Trading Company. Here is the first paragraph of the instructions from them for dyna flow dyes. “Simply apply Dye-Na-Flow Fabric Paints to pre-washed fabric with a brush, squirt bottle, sponge, or airbrush. Let dry. Iron fabric for 3 minutes on dry setting appropriate for fabric. Wash in cool water with Synthrapol and rinse.”
      An iron would heat set and dry your threads!
      As a past wool dyer, I used the microwave, but I had the wool in a water bath while microwaving it. You could try that as well. (I’ve also done a lot of fabric dyeing, some thread dyeing, and it’s a blast! )
      One more suggestion, lay your thread out instead of twisting it. Wind your yarn, but don’t twist it, lay it flat so all the threads show. Use plastic or wax paper or something a bit less absorbent than toweling. Wipe the plastic between (use a piece of fabric that you’ll then be able to use!). I’ve used dyes to dye but this gives way more vibrant colors and I love what you did. I can see a set of this in MY future!
      Thanks for experimenting and sharing! 😊

      @@KoolKookyKreatures I think a cup of water is a good idea. When I said, 'ask me how I know'... we recently had to replace a microwave we'd had for decades and worked well with one that was tricky to program and is noisy as all get out because my husband (for reasons...) ran it empty (testing electrical load in the house). Those little hanks of thread would make it look 'empty' to me and make me pretty skittish. Interesting that there are 'microwave dyes'. If it works, it works. But I will likely remain quite skittish! lol.

      @@KoolKookyKreatures I am the queen of 'quick and my way' so I colored some threads with watercolor (for small pieces that I didn't need to be archival). When I stitch with the thread, the color of the thread comes off on the fabric. That's what I hope the microwave heat treatment eliminates for this Dye-N-Flow coloring. I look forward to updates on how it is to work with.
