    ABOUT JOJO:
    Swiss born Jojo Mayer started playing drums at an early age. By age 18, he received his first international exposure when touring with Monty Alexander and backing up jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie and Nina Simone. In the early 1990s, Mayer moved from Europe to New York City, where he performed with a wide range of artists in various styles. Artists that Mayer has performed with include The Screaming Headless Torsos, Meshell n'dege Occello, DJ Spooky, Emergency Broadcast Network, the Vienna Art Orchestra, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Harry Pepl, Gerald Veasley, John Zorn, George Adams, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, John Medeski, Leni Stern, Wolfgang Puschnigg, Friedrich Gulda, Harry Sokal, Steve Coleman's 5 Elements, and Wah Wah Watson. As the bandleader of NERVE, his concepts and techniques of reverse engineering electronic drumbeats in real time on an acoustic drumset introduced a new paradigm and opened the door for an entire generation of musicians to follow. In 2014, Modern Drummer magazine listed him as one of the “50 Greatest Drummers of All Time.”

    Its insanely cool when you actually understand what musical ideas he is portraying. Its like being part of what you are doing at the moment and narrating yourself through complexity but still being grounded and not break in to bad habits that will break the musical flow and integrity

  • @MiguelAbreuSanchez
    @MiguelAbreuSanchez 6 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    Every time I hear Jojo talk, he distroys the bad habits that i accumulate as a drummer. He reminds me the most important thing.. the musicality. We often get lost in tons of patterns without really get the true potential out of them. Sometimes we forget important musical concepts like timber, tension, DYNAMIC.

    • @sharpisharp
      @sharpisharp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, yes, but still he dominates all the patterns and techniques. So, it is missunderstood if seen as an excuse, not to master all that stuff.

    • @MiguelAbreuSanchez
      @MiguelAbreuSanchez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sharpisharp of course, those are the tools to comunicate, is like a language, you could know the same words than Other people, but still be unable to express yourself as them.. there most be something missing that is not the technique

    • @gringochucha
      @gringochucha 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sharpisharp Yes, but the patterns have to serve the music. I'm a guitar/bass player and it's the same with scales. You can practice all the scales and modes in the universe, but if you can't make music with them, you're useless as a musician.

    Many of you may not share my thoughts about " The Master" Jojo but I honestly believe that we ate saturated of techniques without concept, I meant, we execute exercises and we eventually add them in our compositions but I still feel that the concept of those moves is missing.
    I saw Jojo back in the 2012 and he was amazing but now when I listen Nerve and I listen what he does I realize that everything he plays is based on a concept, you find a concept in literature, you find concept in high quality movies and of course in special music, Jojo ladies and gentlemen has taken drumming into other perspective and level, I hope we can continue counting with his wisdom for long time.
