Wow, I'm in my 60's but I still remember watching this in my living room back in the day when it came on. Even though it scared the crap outta me I just couldn't get enough. Even remember the opening and the theme song.
Only came across this movie in last few weeks! Not typical Disney! Scarecrow mask scary even by today's standards. And the voice is brilliant! A hidden gem of a movie!
My mother was an accomplished artist, clothing designer and seamstress. After this film, titled" The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh", aired on The Wonderful World of Disney my mother made a faithful replica of the Scarecrow's costume. I remember, being the age of nine or so, Mom sewing together rafts of straw to place strategically throughout the garment/hat and it was a hit for Halloween of 1964. I wore the refreshed costume the next Halloween, with more straw(!), working a different part of the neighborhood and adjacent homes. After that my younger brothers wore the costume, repaired each year (made to look as tattered as it did compared to the original Polaroid photograph of it) through at least 1969 and it was lost to time after that because neither I nor my brothers, who remember it too, don't know what became of it. The costume had a chest-piece which joined with the shoulder pads to support the wooden dowel behind the neck to give the tunic a real scarecrow's drape. The painted burlap mask had a satin inner-facing to prevent it from making the face itchy. Very cool.
@@haydenysidro9388 Thank you. My mother was really into suiting-up her young ones for Halloween. When I was four years-old she made a Robin (Batman and Robin) costume that I wore extensively. Today, whenever I see certain combinations of yellow, red and green I get a strong sense of that costume from almost fifty-nine years ago.
Cool story. My grandmother could sew and make clothing, and she made the Sorcerer and his apprentice (from Disney's "Fantasia") costumes for my older brother (Sorcerer) and myself (Apprentice). Later, the costumes were re-used and worn by me (Sorcerer) and my younger sister (Apprentice).
@@TralfazConstruction your welcome you she could have gone into business if she had sewing skills like you say by the have noticed that the scarecrow is basically 1910s batman which also ironic because batman has a villain named scarecrow
Wow! I hadn't seen this in years!!! Loved watching this as a kid in the late 70s. Didn't realize it was filmed in '63. Hard to believe there once was a show we called "The Wonderful World of Disney" and they put together an enjoyable hour of family TV like this every week.
Great JOE, YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONE , ME too & so many others, means at that time it must have been a good movie , NOW I can watch again after 59 long years
I remember watching this on Sunday evening Disney when I was about five or six, and being enthralled with the costumes, the accents, and the shadows. The mystery of it always intrigued me even though I was too young to understand the story.
Wow I was 7 years old setting in front of a old black & white TV filled with excitement when this first aired and I never new it was made in color. Good old Patrick Mcgoohan, TV & movie legend. Fine supporting cast, too - Micheal Hordern, George Cole, Patrick Wymark, Tony Britton and more...Many thanks for sharing.
I thought that was Tony Britton, whom I remember from Robin's Nest, only to find that Robin (Richard O'Sullivan), is among the cast too, playing the eldest son of the turncoat smuggler. I loved this movie/series, and finally have it on Blu-ray.
In one scene, the General answers to his Higher Up. At first I thought the "Higher Up" was Leo McKern, but could not find any credit for Mr. McKern. Who played that role? I was convinced it was Leo. Always enjoyed Patrick McGoohan's acting. This was a great role for him. Cheers!

Thank you uploader those were the days when Disney stood for entertainment.. What a great cast of British stalwarts. Disney had the best working for him Like Patrick Mcgoohan in this classic.. Any chance anyone could upload Disney's " Rob Roy" starring a genuine WW2 Hero Richard Todd. e
The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh is a brilliant British epic come to life on the screen with great actors at the height of their careers and unforgettable music as well. It literally never gets old. Say what you will about Walt Disney the man...but the artist and business man could tell a good story, run the world's best theme park and set hundreds of legendary entertainment events in motion. As I look back at life in America since the 1950's, the influence that Disney had on each and every young mind, my own included, is incalculable. If you've any doubt about Walt's intentions towards strengthening young minds, watch 'Donald Duck ln Mathmagic Land' and grow wise.

... Wow!... The last time I watched this great movie was when I was 9 years old (56yrs ago!... much like most of you guys commenting :0). I just couldn't believe my eyes when it popped up as a suggested movie. I watched it at Marylebone Children's Library London UK where they had a mobile projector and screen set up (it must have been a 35mm print). Also remembered watching another excellent movie there 'The 39 Steps' with Kenneth More...Great times. I feel like we're all in a Disney '65 year old club'!.. My, that makes me feel reeaalllly ancient. Peace & ♥
As a five year old when this originally aired, I remembered only snippets. This was really a good film. I didn't realize it was first a novel and that Romney Marsh is a real place near Dover on the English Coast. Thanks for posting.
Interesting to read these comments, which are clearly mostly by Americans who think of Dr Syn as a Walt Disney creation. We in Britain have always loved the original half-dozen novels, written by Russell Thorndyke [brother of Sybil Thorndyke]. The original Dr Syn is written as partly this 'Robin Hood' kind of figure, but also as having been, previously, a desperate and cruel pirate; his excuse for that being that he fell into those evil ways when pursuing his runaway Spanish wife and her lover. Quite a bit more realistic than this film - though the film is very enjoyable.
my all-time favorite Walt Disney Show. I believe it was shown in three parts on Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday night. When your 5 its pretty scary.
That's how I remember it. I would've been somewhere between 4 & 8 years old (I don't recall). It was multiple parts. However, I didn't see it on its original broadcast date when it competed with the Beatles on Ed Sullivan (Feb 9, 1964). I saw it on a rebroadcast several years later on the CBC.
It's been quite a number of years since I've seen this movie. Just as good now as it was then. Mysterious, suspenseful, and the Scarecrow's haunting laugh... ghoulish and frightening. "Can nobody stop the villain?" "They'll still try sir, don't worry; they'll still try." Great movie, they just don't make 'em like this anymore. Sad, really.
I grew up with this movie & have always loved it. My mom had it on a VHS tape & I watched it all the time. I finally got it on Blu Ray. George Cole was hilarious in this movie. Pretty sure my mom invented 'screen shots' taking photos of the TV screen when this was on Wonderful World of Disney. Patrick McGoohan was an outstanding actor. He was also in Disney's 'three lives of Thomasina'.
With all the remakes being overdone in Hollywood why hasn't anyone stepped up to remake this awesome classic? I love the original and always will, but this story could be remade with a fresh new group of british actors and would appeal to all generations of audiences. It was one of the best Disney movies ever made.
Typical Disney; they'll remake all they're popular movies, buy other properties, but when they have an actual superhero in their vault, they forget it.
Very typical of Disney live action adventure productions of this era, reminiscent of Zorro, Mooncussers and Swamp Fox. McGoohan is very well cast here.

The theme song, especially these lines, has been burned in my brain for almost 60 years. Unforgettable movie...by far, my favorite Disney TV movie from what seems like a lifetime ago!
Watched this as a kid in 1964. Remember watching the final part on Disney, when my babysitter wanted to turn the channel to watch a show about a bug (I thought) called the "Beatles" on a show called the "Ed Sullivan Show". I remember protesting loudly when she changed the channel. It turned out the Beatle "bug" was a group who was singing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". I remember after the song I was allowed to watch the rest of the movie.

Yes it is, though not much history in this movie.LOL One of the locomotives on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is named Dr. Syn. www.rhdr.org.uk/locomotives/doctor-syn/ Wonderful place and wonderful railway --- of course a large part of the Romney Marshes are in East Sussex as well as Kent - equally rich in History.
So many comments regarding this film fair enough. But would never have been made without Russel Thorndyke!. Doesn't anyone read anymore. Fantastic books for young adults to read.
Love this film. I have a very old vhs copy that I try to keep safe as it’s not really available to buy anymore. So glad to see this as I don’t like playing the tape in case I break it!
Thank you for posting this! I remember watching this when I was really little. I think it was the scariest Disney movie I ever saw. I've had a lifelong interest in anything paranormal. It must stem from being born on Halloween. LOL
This was a great story. What many don't know, though, is several of the actors in this later would play pivotal roles in the James Bond series of films.
@@trhansen3244 Actually, Patrick McGoohan had a fantastic career. He was the lead it two major groundbreaking British series and also did four very well written and acted *_Columbo_* mysteries, to name a few things he did.
It's been so many decades that I'd forgotten this Walt Disney story save for a vague memory of a man dressed as a Scarecrow (and not part of the Batman franchise.) Lovely to have found it here. How I miss the days of Mr. Disney before he died and the current Corporation crap took over. Harsh taskmaster, but a brilliant capitalist. Seeing what's become of his company, I can't blame him anymore for having kept a firm grip on it while still alive. Wish he could have lived and in good health for decades more.
I still remember how sad I was the day Disney died. They showed a clip of Steamboat Willie on CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. Such wonderful entertainment he provided.

I loved it at age 10,1963 but it was scary also.
I remember this program on Walt Disney presents.
It's a shame this isn't on Disney +.
It's too clean for that
I was 10 when I saw this on Walt Disney thanks
The Scarlet Pimpernel? I still love this film. Thank you/
wow long time no see since 60 s well worth a watch still has that x factor great to see again booooom!!!
Love this film. I have a very old vhs copy that I try to keep safe as it’s not really available to buy anymore. So glad to see this as I don’t like playing the tape in case I break it!
When movies were movies, and actors were actors....good times
Walt would puke knowing what 's become of 'DisneyGayLand'
True. I still have fond memories of visiting Disney in Florida and California. But I won't buy anything Disney again.
Patrick McGoohan would not have puked on you, even though he would have disapproved of your hatred.
I saw this once on wonderful world of Disney in the early 60s. I still sing the song.
And the actor who plays Dr Syn also went on to play in the movie Silver Spoons and had a small but crucial role in The Punishers.
@@trhansen3244 Actually, Patrick McGoohan had a fantastic career. He was the lead it two major groundbreaking British series and also did four very well written and acted *_Columbo_* mysteries, to name a few things he did.
I love this score the music was so great along with the movie.
This was a piece of art should be more
When I saw this 50 years ago, I knew he was a hero, but he was a SCARY hero! I was but a wee lad. I didn't see the original release of Feb 1964 - I saw a rebroadcast several years after on CBC (did NBC also broadcast the Wonderful World of Disney?).
Great Movie
