I love watching this too. I would always go outside and play like I was the Scarecrow, even trying to do his laugh as I was running as fast as I could like I was riding a horse. Those were great days, I missed them.
This is one of my very favorite Disney Movies, I watched this as a child in the 1960's and never ever forgot it and loved it whenever it played again. Patrick McGoohan was wonderful in the part and I developed such a crush on him, LOL. I wish they made movie's like this again at the Disney Studio's for television. It was great being able to watch The Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights.. There wasn't any filthy language, no major violence, no graphic bloodshed, and it was shows everyone in the family could watch.
According to what I read, the first episode played opposite the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. I watched that. So, 60 years later, I am watching this series. I've become obsessed with Patrick Mcgoohan. I'm watching the Danger Man series and almost finished with it. It's on TH-cam as well as several of his other films. Of course, there is "The Prisoner" also available on TH-cam. Be seeing you.
During the early 1960s it was a treat to watch Disney's Wonderful World of Color on Sunday evenings. I was just six years old when the three episodes of The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh were first televised. Seeing them again brings back all the excitement, tension, and adventure I felt from viewing them as a child. Patrick McGoohan was a perfect choice for the role.
It's been a long time since I've seen this movie, not since I was a kid. Fond memories of Sundays evenings, it's one of my favorites; a true Disney classic. Patrick McGoohan was superb in bringing Dr. Syn to life. Cool under pressure, thorough in his strategies, and that haunting cackle of the Scarecrow... ghoulish and frightening. It scared the Hell out of everyone, me too. I loved it, thank you for this sir.
Thank you for posting this, I've probably commented a few times before but this is one of my favorites shows. This film is the show piece of an era when millions gathered around the TV on Sunday night to see another great Disney creation. I remember watching Scarecrow on Sunday night when I was young, such fond memories. Watching this again brings me back to my youth, to a time when Disney made such great films. The background music is classic, you just don't hear this any more. I too wish they would release a remastered version of improved quality but all the same the quality of the film as it is speaks to the time in which the film was made which is part of it's character.
It's on DVD now, on eBay, at outrageous prices. For a new DVD, from $90 to about $300. It's an entry in the Disney Treasures DVD collection. It's been available for some time as a blu-ray.
Kids are watching so they dont show the smugglers crashing the ships and killing all on board first😮. I truly enjoyed the movie for my first time. Best live Disney❤
I really like this movie when it came in the 60s. Although the screen version of title song did not have the cackling laugh, which I was glad they added in the TV episodes.
Sir Thomas played Jacob Marley and the assistant to Dr Syn played the young Ebenezer Scrooge in the same Christmas Carol movie with Alistair Sims 1951 movie. I love both movies.
Sunday night right after dinner.. 12 O'Clock High, then Disney..and in the summer with no school, the Jackie Gleason show from Miami! Family t.v. ruled!
I love how Dr. Syn can keep his cool even when things are looking dangerous. That's why he can keep ahead of the General, not just his ability to use his position to gain useful information. I also love how he takes the effort to make himself look like a victim of the Scarecrow, whether as the Scarecrow or himself. Even if the men are forced to speak, only Johnny and Mr. Nips know who's behind the mask, but I can understand his desire to reduce all risk to himself and the people who work for him.
Actually, the reason he can stay so cool is because he has read the script and knows that the General, et al., are just paid actors and will do what they are supposed to.
Scarecrow, The Swamp Fox with Leslie Nielsen, and the Davy Crockett episodes with Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen were childhood viewing for sure. Disney didn't make a separate Davy Crockett series, and wouldn't sell the rights, so Fess Parker was picked to star as Daniel Boone with Ed Ames as Mingo, as a Davy Crockett "copy" show on NBC.
I was modestly impressed to realize that I got all but two lines of the theme after fifty years. We must have has a tape (cassette of the show) as children.
Walt Disney would burn his mutant namesake to the ground where he here ! THIS is the kind of educational entertainment our kids should be watching, not the pathetic garbage forced on us all today.
too bad there wasn,t an epilog to see what happened to General {ex-General?} Pugh after the King and the Admiral saw those reports.....! i,m sure it would have been a BEAUTY!!!
The Hanover dynasty were German. This George was only third generation-just like Queen Mary( the late Queen's grandmother)they still sported good teutonic accents.
A non-sailor was unlikely to be press ganged, a gentleman would simply not have been press ganged. Also a press ganged deserted wouldnt actually be hanged he'd just be returned to service. A voluntary sailor would however be hanged for desertion.

A fine actor & handsome man -this was my first introduction to Secret Agent Patrick McGoohan & I was only a kid.
Don't forget him as #6 in the Prisoner

You've done everyone a favor. This is a great Disney gem.

Patrick Mcgoohan is awesome…what a sonorous voice, noble face. Thank you Joseph for posting this!
Thank you so much for uploading these! Amazing to think the scarecrow of Romney Marsh predated the super hero genre by 20 years

Go to Walmart on line and you can find the complete series. It costs over $300.00!! Otherwise I would have bought it!
Me too, I would like to see it on DVD as well!

So, just rewatched this for about the tenth time on TH-cam. It never grows old! Quality is like that.
Loved to watch this as a kid with the swamp Fox.Two great stories.
God bless all the cast and crew for making this wonderful movie!❤

This is a absolute classic!❤

Great story and film, a flood of great Sunday night at seven memories. I sat with all my family and watched every Sunday night!

It to bad shows like this are no longer on tv.
Marvelous show......made when Disney and the world were still innocent and decent
Well, not completely corrupted.
One of my favorite shows as a kid
I'm watching this on our main TV. I've noticed my kids paying attention :)
I watched it at about 8 years old when on original old tv .Still the best at 69 years

It is interesting that the oppressed citizens found it easier to avoid paying more for imported goods by smuggling than just not paying their taxes.
I watched this when I was a kid. I’m watching it and see that President Trump is an excellent allegory to our next president!
Too bad it doesn't really talk about what happened to General pugh, although I can imagine.
The generals boss has a very German sounding English accent
It was filmed in England so could well have been a German actor .Not to far to the fatherland .

Good drama, but it's hardly likely George III involved himself in such parochial issues.
