I saw Charles Laughton for the first time as a kid watching "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" by myself on an old black and white TV. I was absolutely terrified of Quasimodo, yet somehow sympathetic. Laughton still seems creepy to me but that shows the effect of great acting! BTW, his is the only hunchback worth watching. No one has ever compared!!!

Quasimodo fell off the roof of Notre Dame onto the hard concrete courtyard below. A concerned crowd quickly formed around the dazed hunchback.
" What happened ? " asked a gendarme, pushing his way through.

This film gives Charles Laughton the chance to show the depth and pathos of his acting ability. His performance here shows a depth and structure sadly lacking in many subsequent British actors, betrayed by their megalomania, substance abuse or perversity. Mr. Laughton was a lovely actor; the direction here is notably slick and well co-ordinated. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even the opening score was noticeable.

With the lack of talent today it would be quite impossible to make such a wonderful movie as this again. Now movie makers have to use nudity, graphic violence and foul language to offset their incompetence. This of course can never make up the difference.

Without talent, - or even 'skill', how else can your interest be held ?
You're right, it is all so very sad. It's pathetic. I would call it 'pitiful' but it is truly impossible to summon any sympathy.
Removing your clothes while pretending to object using offensive language, always set in some venue of plastic sensationalism and grotesque unnecessary violence -
If this is adjudged to be 'talent' - or even 'entertaining' I can't even afford the charity of humor,

Laughton was born and raised in Wonderland, left just prior to Alice.

Captain Kidd reminds me a bit of John Candy

I love these old movies from a time when actors made the story, not cgi and bullshit. Imaginations were required of the audiences.

Charles Laughton brilliant. The captains cabin was a bit too tall I think and what was Tower bridge doing there in the 1700's

On a sandbar.. six mile from Dover, Captain Kydd addressed the crew. "Take the wreck apart lads.. build me a stage. Act out a drama for a dead man's wage."

An excellent restoration indeed! All other versions I had begun to watch were very poor.

When questions arose about the safety of DC water, Mayor Marion Barry drank a glass of it. A chef said he was drinking Evian.

Excellent film. Laughton is brilliant. By the way (and not to detract from the film), spot the error at 1:22:13..... the panoramic view of London included Tower Bridge, opened in 1894.

    R. Scott always had a little superior, smarty attitude.

A (good) Pirate movie has got to be about the only kind in which the absence of the fairer kind is tolerable. On the other hand though not till she entered the frame did i realize how great an absence it actually was. The assets of a Lady can spark life where none otherwise exist (both figuratively and literally)!

String a couple dozen pre- movie credits together with no titles, then followed by 5 minutes of "The End" plates.
