The technical definition of an arpeggiator is: Al Di Meola. Look it up, it's in the bible, the guitar bible (just before the part where Al ascends into Heaven on a Locrian b5/#6 riff that left a 900' wide crop circle pattern, visible from space, burned into the tarmac at JFK airport).
Arpeggiators existed on premium electronic organs by 1969. What you did was hold the chord and run the other hand along something like a ribbon controller
