My favorite part about this is how little Grog talks while the party yells and screams at Scanlan. The first thing he asks is about his mother and then apologizes. Really shows just how close those two where.
Especially when Scanlan's immediate reaction to him speaking up is still lashing out. It's really gorgeous seeing Grog embody the advice he gave Keyleth.

Because they treated his life as a joke, because he is a joke, he is the comedic relief. That's his role, the role he chose and upheld...until, slowly but surely and then all at once: Scanlan realized he could no longer live like that. By then however, it was far too late for anyone to do anything healthy about it. He needed to leave, to reset. And also to be in the right place at the right time to warn the others about Vecna's impending return, or else Vox Machina may have only learned of this when Thar Amphala arrived in Illsyra.

It’s so true how little they cared to an extent. They all used magic for selfish things, they could’ve easily done it to get what they wanted from him. Hold person, zone of truth, anything, but they didn’t.
@@vishaansingh1019 I’m saying they are bad for trying to meet his standards when they did not use all their tools when they’ve used it for other objectives that include violating privacy. PC or NPC. It leaves them little true room to stand on regarding what Scanlan wants to hear for proof of them “caring”
@@arkham7033 They were trying to extract info from the NPCs. Vs Scanlan having a traumatic event in his past that he CLEARLY made obvious he had no interest in discussing. On a meta level, this translates to Sam being genuinely uninterested in the somewhat melodramatic roleplay the cast (sans Travis and Ashley) had been engaging in and them respecting his space in kind. Notice how no one intervenes during the Spice addiction. It's not because they don't care about Scanlan, it's because they figure Sam is pursuing a comedy angle and don't want to step on it. Also, reminder that Vex and Vax were also extremely secretive about their mother's name and never openly discussed it in front of the party. Scanlan only "knows" it because Sam printed out a page from the CR Wiki and genuinely forgot they hadn't volunteered the info to his character.
@@vishaansingh1019 I can see where you’re coming from and that’s one take. But clearly, as Scanlan said, he’s a good liar and has deeper meanings to his comedy angles. Heck, he hides a lot of things behind his joking characters. Look at Nott and FCG. Both comical in their own right with deeper intentions. I’m not saying anything about Vex and Vax’s mom, but he did remember Percy’s parents. All the characters had emotional backstories and Sam’s was never fought for to be investigated. Furthermore, this party has used magic on each other in the past for combat too. The staple for that in my mind is when Keyleth used hold person on Percy and they stole Percy’s gun on a guess. I’m saying they could have done more to meet Scanlan’s standards. Hence why I said “little they care to an extent”. Also, if it was “clear” Sam had not wanted to discuss such an important thing, it makes little sense for him to bring it up now as a point of contention. On top of it all, the slowest of them all, Grog, was the only one not yelling at Scanlan and apologizing as opposed to trying to convince him what great friends they are. We have different views and that’s that.
@@arkham7033 Sam completely changed his roleplay style after A Bard's Lament and FCG and Nott represent that. Scanlan was a comedy first character who happened to have some stellar serious moments, but Matt had to basically force him into that serious stuff (i.e. Kaylie). He kept trying to revamp Scanlan to have some sort of reason to stick around (i.e. the drug addiction) but quickly realized that he was starting to stick out and decided to throw a curveball at the group with this brilliant scene. Taryon then came pre-loaded with a sad backstory that VM could resolve. When Scanlan returned, he was a much more reserved and serious person who represented Sam's commitment to opening up to serious roleplay. Regardless, the idea of VM using magic to force Scanlan to trauma dump against his will is insane and morally repugnant. If they had done that, I would have stopped watching.
I usually love percys roleplay but all be did at that point was insult scanlan and his daughter, which very much ignored his character growth since finding out about kaylee, which kinda proved scanlans point that he's just a funny man to them and they don't know him beyond surface level or what he was in the early eps
@@shannonodonnell1929 I detest his roleplay, but I agree that there was no tough love in this and that he was just insulting Scanlan and had daughter. @JDOTczar Tbh I'm still working though the vox machina campaign and am currently at episode 104. I usually liked percys character and talesians roleplay but after this episode to where I'm at, I like it less and less, not just with Scanalan but with anyone. Also loved how when he left he went to hug Kaylie and she pushed him away😂 he wanted to act like he had her best interests at heart but Kaylie knew he didn't care, he was purely looking for a mic drop moment throughout
How are they going to compress this for the show. Vax & Vex, Percy and Grog are important but Pike could cover Percy & Vex's points for the most part and be more impactful maybe

I don’t even watch this show, why am I openly sobbing right now 😂
Seriously tho, Sam is an amazing actor and player and this has straight up convinced me to finally give Critical Role a try💜
Bards lament is the most powerful role playing bar none.
He got all the girls on the cast to cry, and it was a gag. Fucking legend.

tary and grog geeking over the magic weapon is actually kinda cute, ngl
After everything in this season i want this animated so much
........
😐
"Show me on the character sheet where the bad man touched u!" 😂😂😂😂😎
Poor Matt had to rp Pike through that. I wonder what Ashley was feeling wjen she got to see this for the first time?
travis at 21:35 "This is good shit and also, pull it together big guy, dont cry, dont cry, dont cry.."
I love the fact that Sam gets affected by his pwn stuff too. This and somrthing he does toward the end of ExU Calamity are epic examples of his brilliance and how he even affects himself sometimes. Its amazing!
I hope this makes it into the show.
I hope so too, but how one go about converting this into the animated show. In the show the players expressions and reactions are separated from their characters.
It will be different, they can work the anger into the grief and, little elf girl, watching the characters react and try and vanish will be hilarious.
Did it? Can't imagine it. They cut out all the tension inside of VM for the show. Like Tiberius isn't even there and everything else.
You can already see the ground work being laid with them being dismissive of Scanlan's ideas (Delilah's book anyone?)@@C4lipp0
@@C4lipp0
Well, that's just not true.
I've had arguments with people I love like this...they captured how uncomfortable and devastating that can be.
Good work chaps.
"An hour." Taliesin looks over and is proud before Laura is. Yes, the chaos flows...
Let chaos reign
I love how Grog is the most emotionally intelligent person in the room.
I know it's a response to Sam making Scanlan leave but they really shit on Tarry for no reason lol
They loosened up on him in the next session, most definitely was a gut reaction to Scanlan leaving heartwrenchingly and Sam in the SAME SESSION bringing in Tarry
@@aaagrey6323 what are you talking about, after this session they literally beat his ass as a "test" lmao
It takes Vex flying in and going "ayo wtf are y'all doing" for them to stop. I love them as both players and characters, but they just straight up took their frustration out on Tary
@@GeeGe. They stopped before Vex flew in, saying "Hey, this is what you're gonna be up against in Nine Hells? You sure you want to join?" And connected with him more after hearing why he was out 'adventuring'.
@@GeeGe. Like won't deny that they prob were taking out their frustration but they also admitted that, that's how they haze people and have done it twice before.
@@aaagrey6323 they "connected" with him after completely humiliating his ass, sure I guess. still completely unfair towards Tary imo.
And I'm not sure how saying "we've done this before", even though they had never played out something like that in the game, makes it better 🤷
Anyway, at the end of the day it's their game and they had fun and all that, so I'll stop arguing here. I just find it hard to justify what they did as anything actually fair 😅
And then they all loved Tary
I still to this day don't understand why they treated his death as a joke.
Because honestly? They are self-centered pricks ^^
They all tried to turn it around on scanlan when he confronts them.
Pretty realistic reactions from the characters, anger and denial
They don't want that smoke but Scanbo can't be stopped from burning this whole sumbotch down.
53:52 The most hilarious version of “you reap what you sow.”
The audacity of Vex thinking Doty would listen to a word she says is insane.
I think the most damning thing is that no one had an answer for "what have you ever done for me!?"
They all listed reasons they needed him, but couldnt give him anything back
It's so good that the realisator of Legend of Vox Machina succeded in finding voice actor so close to the original character!
😂👏👏
The casting director did a really good job.
@@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll i know right?!

Mary Elizabeth-McGlen is a veteran of the industry.
Did you know she was the Voice Director of the Cowboy Bebop ENG Dub?
I could never improv like Sam does, he literally became Scanlan
We were on the verge of greatness, we were *this* close.
Laura's impotent kleenex fling of fury: classic!
I feel like I missed something. Sam was sitting at the table the whole time, so obviously he wasn't going to stop playing - this was obvious right?
talk about EMMY level acting.
he just wanted to changed PC, made some reason and delivers it like absolutely main character.
amazing
58:38 to 58:47 lol best part
I had to watch it five times to see where the red pen was thrown from to realize that it was off camera throne.
I'm glad you liked it, easy access to these moments is what I'm trying at. ❤️
Justified throw.
Love grog the wisest of them proving you don’t have to be intelligent to be wise
Just noticed the LoVM character icons.
Travis from the beginning looked as though he knew that was a bad idea to do to scanlan
5:20 were they laughing at the possibility of scanlan knowing what they did to his body? or something else? because if so that's so foul
I think it's more about them not taking him seriously just yet.
This is so heavy we must have it.
Love these moments.
I hope Tary shows up in theanimation
I just wonder if Tary will be voiced by Sam or by a different person
It’s gotta be Sam putting on the most arrogant voice he can. It HAS to be
@@Emosoragurl21 All the PCs are voiced by their original player, so I'd assume that if Tary is LOVM he will be voiced by Sam.
I am really envy of Matt... my Players can't talk a minute amongst themselves...
It's a skill that takes time to develop. Some are better at it than others. But these are professionals, they are so good they get paid to do it.
Wish my DM would give more attention to Role-playing instead of focusing everything on combat and trying to backseat play our characters himself.
@@Junglehunter677find a new dm the fuck💀
@@Junglehunter677 that’s a bad dm and that’s coming from me as I haven’t done much dming but I do know that when it comes to dnd let the players RP if they do and be the guiding hand when they wish for it. I CANT WAIT FOR THIS TO BE ANIMATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i got some bad news
Prepare to be disappointed. In one of the most wildly insane production choices CR has ever made, they chose not to include A Bard's Lament in the animated series.
this is hard to watch... scanlan is my favorite dnd character in all of my DnD experience. when he tells the others that he feels out of his league, he is really out of their league. by far.

41:00 Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the Champion of the Matron of Ravens
all time favourite episode!
Grog and Keyleth were the best friends of Scanlan.
god imagine if ashley was there
It’s so true how little they cared to an extent. They all used magic for selfish things, they could’ve easily done it to get what they wanted from him. Hold person, zone of truth, anything, but they didn’t.
???? What the actual fuck? Are you saying they're bad friends for NOT forcefully invading his privacy with magic?
18:17 best tough love speech from Percy.
Thinking that there was a mic drop moment for Percy with his comment on his parents names and then get dropped with Scanlans retort with them without pause is perfect.
@JDOTczar Tbh I'm still working though the vox machina campaign and am currently at episode 104. I usually liked percys character and talesians roleplay but after this episode to where I'm at, I like it less and less, not just with Scanalan but with anyone. Scrying on Scanlan against his wishes and only to get his belongings, acting so angry and not once apologising to him once he returned and infact having Scanlan apologise to him rubbed me up the wrong way.
Also loved how when he left he went to hug Kaylie and she pushed him away😂 he wanted to act like he had her best interests at heart but Kaylie knew he didn't care, he was purely looking for a mic drop moment throughout
Vex was such a prick with scanlans departure 🤦♂️

How are they going to compress this for the show. Vax & Vex, Percy and Grog are important but Pike could cover Percy & Vex's points for the most part and be more impactful maybe
Well it will be a few minutes long at most, instead of nearly an hour.
Everyone will probably have 2-3 lines, but they will all be well-engineered.

I've always been impressed by Sam, and his ability to create a character who is, honestly, both equal parts scumbag who needs his ass kicked, and the MVP.
Like this whole rant is so good, because it really shows what a piece of shit Scanlan can be, while also (almost) making sense. Like, he's completely full of shit, but he's got juuuuust enough legit ammo that you can see how he's rationalizing it.
