Another terrific tutorial Roger - wonderful playing as always, and the annotations are so very useful to an improviser especially when you can simultaneously see the chord symbol, the notes being played and your annotation.
Roger, you've always led the way for online demos and graphics but this is at a new level now with commentary and annotations. Thank you so very much for all of the hard work you must put in researching how best to communicate your deep insight into world-class Jazz piano playing. It is very much appreciated.
@Lot2learn Thank you for bringing Doug's channel back to my attention. I remember he used to add annotations to his playing (of mainly slower pieces) but I can see now that his presentations of stave and virtual keyboard have become sophisticated.
I can tell by how many comments there are on a relatively unknown video (333 views right now) that the people who DO see this video really like it. Myself included, obviously. I really like the style of your videos and how you show what you are playing. This is most likely for the player like myself, a mid level intermediate that doesn't read sheet, but really enjoys playing and actively seeks out youtube videos that can give different ideas. You do a great job, thank you very much
Great job lot2learn very well played! Recently watching Kenny Barron & Brad Mehldau playing together. Some of the best duet playing I have heard in my life and both were on top form. Look forward to more posts from you. All the Best!
This is great!!! THe notation is a great innovation. Thanks a lot!!! I know of Jazz voices in theory but I have never really heard it applied in this manner. Thanx again!!!
(Next to the educational value for me, I highly value the interpretation itself, Roger Friedman. I have it in my playlist. Great jazz interpretation...)
This is Jazz!!!! Here in Italy it's quite hard to hear this kind of stuff, most pianists (and not only) are too busy to show their technique only. I think this is an effect of classical training and a musical tradition based mostly on execution. Fortunately I've studied with jazz musicians connected to real jazz world..
At 0:46 seconds, the comment bar mentions F#min/maj7, and the chord bar mentions F#min7, however, in the left hand there is an Eb and an Ab, which doesn't belong to any of those two... I did some math, and a chord that would express all that is played may be F#min9(maj 7)(add 13). The 13 is the D# (enharmonically equivalent to Eb), the 9 is the G# (enharmonically eq. to Ab). True? Wrong?
Moreover at 0:12 (I indicate the degrees between parentheses as additional info) indicated in text bar: Gm7 (II) you (seem to) play: Db7(#9) (VI) I tried Gm7, but it doesn't sound good. Db7(#9) sounds superb.
It looks like I'm playing G because I am playing a rootless voicing - letting the bass player play the E while I play G-B-D in the left hand to G-B-C# with the bass player playing A makes this an A7.
Lot2learn Ah thank you for your reply! But this seems to be the answer to my following question! (and I understand it now: you are right!). But what about this one? It is not a Gm7 you play there. I tried, and Db7(#9) seems to be it. For al clarity: it is about the measure at about 0:12 seconds, where the titel bar indicates Gm7 in the left corner, and C7 in the right corner. (while I want to verify with you whether it is Db7(#9) and then C7(#9) you play instead ).
Good & powerful stuff, I'm a great jazz lover for many years. You're a teacher, but shouldn't you be (also) pursuing a career in performing/making your own recordings? or do you already do that?

Can you teach me how these chords work? Why are they arranged in these manner?
This is an awesome jazz song!!! I want to know more about them!
@LinZeeLinuz Ha, ha...yes, I guess this is one of my more "advanced" tutorials. Thanks for your comment.
@paulwwells Thanks Paul, although Doug (Jazz2511) is the one who led the way for me. ;-)

Is it right that at 0:26 you play something different than indicated:
titel bar: 2-5-1 progression,
you play 4-5-1 (I see you playing G, not Em)
Explained by Roger: I was wrong, he is playing rootless voicing, so left out the first note of the chord.
Good & powerful stuff, I'm a great jazz lover for many years. You're a teacher, but shouldn't you be (also) pursuing a career in performing/making your own recordings? or do you already do that?
