We think of bebop standards as being written well before the current day - tunes like, um.. "Bebop" by Dizzy Gillespie, or "Billie's Bounce", "Anthropology", et al - the Charlie Parker standards... but this song "Voyage" - written by the brilliant Kenny Barron - has made it's way into the standard repertoire for jazz musicians everywhere. It's an AABA form, basically in F minor, although the bridge is where the REAL fun is... Db, D, Eb, E are the key centers before returning to F minor. You should really practice your scales before playing this tune.
LET ME PLEASE APOLOGIZE for the sound quality. You can see in the video that I had the Zoom H4n and condenser mics set up to record. However, my power cord was defective and the Zoom shut off in the first 5 minutes of this concert (about an hour before this tune). I was absolutely livid when I realized this because I had spent the entire afternoon testing everything, making sure it all worked... and everything did - until the concert (of course). So what you are actually listening to is the sound from the GoPro cameras - one was attached to the piano, and the other was attached to my vibes. The rattling sound is coming from my vibes... I did some mixing of the two tracks and really tried to get rid of all the annoying background noises. I felt that the concert was too good to throw away just because of the sound problems.. so here it is, warts and all. I can still listen to it and enjoy the fun moments that we had, so hopefully you can too.
As always, thank you for listening! If you enjoyed this video, please subscribe or check out the stuff listed below.

Fantastic playing individually and connection as an ensemble
Always enjoying listening to your music Tim, even with GoPro sound!
You're cooking on this one Tim.
Ya'll sound great. I'm so glad to see live performances happening
Thanks. Yeah I've been pretty lucky here in Germany. This concert was in a large room and they only allowed 50 people or so. Since about the end of June I have been able to play quite a bit. I hope you are safe where you are!
Really good. Congratulations 👌
cool!!!
Excellent performance of a great tune. I’m stealing the start of your solo, love the low register/use of space.
Thanks! Steal away - I probably got it from somewhere too
absolute masterpiece
Love the slide down the vibraphone keyboard at the end! It seems to me that you have developed a technique that makes a lot of sense. Using the inner mallet on the right hand looks more relaxed and less awkward than the Burton grip, but you also use the outer mallet. There is tremendous fluidity to your playing. I play the vibes (light years behind you) and find that one of the most difficult aspects of 4 mallet playing is clunking the mallet heads together when trying to play fast. And trying to stay relaxed and swing despite the inherent awkwardness of the grip.
You have mastered the instrument and in my opinion are one of the premier jazz vibraphonists. Thanks for uploading this great music. (I bought your new CD and am looking forward to listening to it in it’s entirety).
Thank you! I sent the CD yesterday.. hopefully it doesn’t take too long to arrive.
Burnin‘!
