KARATE: THE WAY IT WAS

  • Karate is OUR BASE as it is for many who are the best Combative teachers. That does not mean that we use each and every technique in Karate, but it DOES mean that the generation of POWER that makes REAL Karate what it is, remains "fused" into our training. From the SHUTO that many people call the AX HAND to the REVERSE PUNCH done with what some call the DROP STEP,we never forget what gave us our confidence as teenagers growing up in the ghetto and taught us pain tolerance, persistence and other characteristics that have made us better adults.

These old school Karate guys were always absolutely lethal.
I'm only 31, but I've sparred with guys that are now 50+ years old, who trained like this throughout the late 80's and 90's.
Even at 50+ years old, their precision, timing, distance control, technique, and the number of tricks they've got up their sleeve from all those years of experience is breathtaking.
I remember the first time I sparred a guy like this I thought to myself "We've both got a good gyaku tsuki, but the difference is that this older guy I'm sparring has 100 different ways to set me up and land his."
And he did, I was about 23 at that time, and I got absolutely SCHOOLED that day.
These old school Karate Men are strong as an Ox too, feels like hitting an Oak Tree when you do finally land on them, they've got a density that's just different man.
They're special, and they deserve a world of respect.

I love this traditional way of sparring . Safy you are correct in saying "if you did not block it was your fault" The intesity is amazing full on "kiai" for a kill shot

Being a Goju guy all my life. I love this Shotokan sparring. We see here 2 very important skills for fighting the first is timing, The second is accuracy. People have changed but Karate can still be almost the same.

I personally love Goju for the street. The gouging, pinching, ripping, tearing that so many think is "new" are hall marks of Goju. As you know :)

Great video, I made it to 5th KYU when I was in High school and then caught up with it somewhat but I'm doing Krav Maga now. I'm 46 now so training was different in the 80's than it is today. I was never THAT great because I MISTOOK the hard core training they did semi-full contact sparring with 50% contact -no pads and applying that mindset in the gym when I first started. MY BIGGEST BLUNDER was training as a KRAV MAGA white belt and using 50% contact on training partners thinking it was OK (having been just a 5th KYU back in the day and thinking you have to be hard core and confusing hard core for power WITH control) -The school owner got some complaints about me and we had a private discussion. I told him how I remember training and that my intentions were the best and I honestly felt bad about being seen as some crazy guy. I wanted authentic hard training but I understood we live in a world of lawsuits and people who like drama, and I needed to curb my 'intensity' a little and mind the right etiquette. I made a public apology and trained WITHOUT a partner for a couple of weeks -I leaned my lesson. I made it to Level 4 while most of the complainers either went to another school or quit. I refined my character and someday I want to find REAL Karate and train again - Might be older but it's just a number.

Been there, done this....there is a reason I stopped, couldn't be the tooth that I am lucky to still have in my mouth from a spinning heel kick? Well, just one of the reasons, my ribs got pulverized and I saw an ambulance or two take away a few class mates. Back in the old school it wasn't baby sitting martial arts though it was best to live with a Registered Nurse.....I do now. However, the older legitimate systems produced some great fighters...no fatties in the class and no cry babies, lots of training, hurt and pains from my experiences.

This is the world famous KUGB Red Triangle dojo who under Sensei Sherry ( seen coaching ) won multiple world and European championships and as a key part of the team also defeated the Japanese in japan for the first time . Sensei sherry is the head instructor of the KUGB after the passing of the late great Enoeda Sensei it’s founder , who can be seen referring in this clip . We also see Sensei Frank Brennan the all time great champion in action . The dojo has a fearsome reputation .

Amos Pizzey: I do welcome you to my channel, but I would like to inform you that I have been training in REAL martial arts for over 40 years and demand fairness. I will excuse you this one time for not mentioning perhaps the best original fighter from the UK ELWYN HALL. You might also mention Mr. Ronnie Christopher. (The man who landed the front kick Enoeda liked). Keep it real. I am not fake. I am real unlike most and want only the unbiased to be in my forums. Thank you. Sayf Carman

@@TheUmmahFightCamp please forgive my omission brother . Imho Elwyn Hall was overall the greatest fighter the KUGB produced . He was a big part of the winning team in japan ( clip is on youtube ) One of my shotokan instructors Craig Raye who ran Marshall st dojo under Enoeda sensie was Hall Sensei’s training partner for many years . I was replying re Red Triangle which is a Liverpool dojo . Hall Sensei was based out of London as was I believe Ronnie Christopher thigh they all traveled to red triangle for squad training as seen in the clip . The other big influence in the UK was the freestyle movement pioneered by the great Alfie Lewis and the UK Lau Gar squad . Alfie Lewis was a world class fighter and formed his own Mushin Kai school who still produce great champions today . I’m an average student and now pretty old though I still train at the Gracie acadamy in LA . I have real time in wing Chun ( we got caught up in the wing Chun wars in Uk in the 80’s ) KUGB shotokan and the most training time in MuGenDo kickboxing ( 10 years ) a style derived from Wado Ryu by Meiji Suzuki that had great success on the competition circuit . I have great respect for all martial arts and all who follow the way in all forms . Respect to you and your channel . OSS 🥋🙏🏻

this is not seen today ...nowadays if you even show too much intensity you get warned... thats why ended up leaving shotokan after so many yrs. ...still love the art but its really a joke now ....think about this, most real boxers with at least a year of in ring experience will probably destroy most so called black belts who's only experience is point fighting and yelling all over the place with no contact ....that is the state of karate in general in the U.S. ...now if you want to see something like this you would have to travel to Europe or Latin america where I have seen it practiced this way ...sad but true ...

Such a pity that this kind of Karate isn't being taught much anymore especially here in Ireland. It's embarrassing witnessing modern "senseis" teaching what they claim is Karate when all they do is focus on kata kata kata and more kata. One of them actually says kata is all you need and when you get attacked it'll just come out haha. He doesn't know what he's talking about, he doesn't even teach the bunkai or do drills, sparring etc. not even pad work. Pathetic to witness.
