I highly recommend checking out the artist DEMONDICE and her most recent EP: SHUT UP, GET HAPPY. If you like Mori Calliope I'm sure you'll like DEMONDICE. For reasons. Trust.

The Mixer has specifically asked Calli to Identify the Highest and Lowest note she could sing and came back with a "Tehe I included your entire range in this song! Have fun!" That's why those really high notes appeared. It was just the Mixer challenging our Reaper to pretty awesome effect I'd say.

Hololive songs in general tend to have subtitles in the CC button, so whenever reacting to Mori or any other holo song, if the lyrics aren't in the MV, press the CC button cause they are probably in there.

Calli actually prefers to not have her vocals on top of the mixing. It's a stylistic choice to have them mixed in. Though I do agree it's a shame we can't hear her more clearly at times.
I think she does it to fit the mood she is going for at that part. Much like the somewhat off-kilter rhythm at one point, giving a sense of things going off the rails, only for it to snap back to the rhythm with the "I seize control" line. Perhaps those megaphone-esk lines are meant to signify unclear, intrusive thoughts or worries?
That's the one thing that bothered me in most of her songs. She "lets" the music overpower her, but *_I'm here for HER!_*
I prefer it over what a lot of Japanese produced music does, which often goes to the other extreme and treats the music like a throwaway background noise that only exists so the singer has some level of background. That might be since I'm mainly listening to anything adjacent to the Rock genre where every band member is a part of the song, not just the singer - but in my mind the instruments and lyrics should coexist and play into another, not drown each other out.
Didn't know this, but I definitely get why Calli would prefer it.

This is the first track of her new, first full album and she is actually testing out a lot of very different styles of songs with this album. Things you wouldn't exactly expect from her and that she never did before, but she just went for it and tried it out :D

She had her first concert yesterday too. It was great. Having her 3d model is going to make her videos incredible.
12:16 One interesting thing to note is that this track was released hours after the first time she would perform on an actual stage with the rest of Hololive with her full 3D model in front of thousands of live attendees and thousands more watching the PPV live stream. Calli had performed small local venues like bars and nightclubs before joining Hololive, but the concert this weekend was a really big milestone for the Hololive English Gen 1 and Indonesia Gen 1 girls.
Even then, she only got to perform one song (Red) during the concert, so this MV is also serving as a display of what her new 3D model is capable of.
Speaking of vTuber models, the live person behind the vTuber avatar is often referred to as the character's "soul". So just my personal speculation that the chorus about "to move forward, the lore is I must be void inside" implies that conventional wisdom states she has to strip away her IRL self (and by extension her previous rap identity) and embody the character of Calliope Mori in order to be successful. But her final turn on the line is her denial of that ideal, holding tight to her personal identity.
I love that last part about denying the ideal of abandoning her IRL personality because her old Identity is resurfacing aswell in various other places. Definitely her trying to avoid losing herself as the Calli Identity.
Yeah it's a shame the fastest parts of this songs aren't "hearable" really. However there are CC for this MV so those would've helped out.
With this new album, she said she wants to be experimental. Every song is basically a different genre. Definitely a good album. She's still finding her sound and trying new stuff.
I think she did an amazing job for her first album.
Her favorite weapons include her scythe (nicknamed "Ricky") and the flail, a medieval weapon made from a spiked metal ball on a chain.
Calliope is noted for having one of the most lowest pitched voice in hololive, even more so than likes of Nekomata Okayu, Tokoyami Towa and A-chan. Although fluent in English, Calliope often fails to understand current modes of speech, such as the use of contractions or modern slang. She is easily flustered by romance, leading some to call her the "tsundereaper."
When not on camera, however, she is described as air-headed and hopelessly forgetful. Kiara has mentioned that she frequently misplaces things despite leaving them in an obvious place, like leaving her cellphone in her jacket. She also works exceptionally hard, perhaps too much so.
About that last point, she did mention in a stream that her manager, J-Chad, has actually told her to stream less going forward into 2022

There is a heartwarming success story behind all 5 Holomyth girls. All if them were in a level of dispare or emptiness and applied to hololive because what do they have to lose. And now they soar above clouds.

I don't know why more people don't use CC. Like, Calli always puts lyrics on her stuff because she has international fanbase. I understand rappers like to hear the lyrics and catch stuff themselves, but then you can also have a complete analysis of the song if you see the lyrics.
She actually said almost the opposite about the "numbing pain is numbing happiness" line.
IIRC she said that basically earlier in her career as Calliope Mori, she ended up numbing herself to the measure of negativity that she got so that she could push through, but it also limited her happiness as she just worked. So she had to learn to live with the negative so she could feel the positive more fully.
Love you’re doing more Calliope! Her LoFi album is also very nice. The tracks and production are completely redone and it is much easier to catch her lyrics, but you don’t get the epic orchestral beat
FYI, the entire album is already out for streaming on Spotify, YT Music etc. Unalive (title track) is the first to get a music video, most of the other ones will get one in the future. Dead on Arrival might be super interesting to check out, since it's in a genre I haven't seen you talk about much and an absolute banger. Going back to the first EP with a song like "Dead Beats" might also be a nice change of pace and return to a more "regular" hip hop style track.
I was hoping you react to this even if it just came out, curious what you will think of the contrasting sounds of her lower tone voice to such a powerful beat.

Love the Calliope reactions man! I like what you said about this one perhaps being one of those tracks that ages like fine wine, I think that's true. Personally I find many of her songs to have that quality that you can listen to them maybe even 10-15 times and still find something you missed during all the previous listens, whether it's in the lyrics or in the mix.
If you're planning on reacting to more from the new album I'd recommend "Dead On Arrival", "Lose-Lose Days", or "Resting Power". All absolute bangers!

Now those fast lines would have been easier for you to comment on with the "CC" button, but I can see why you wouldn't since that button usually doesn't actually bring up the actual lyrics. Maybe it should have automatically been turned on for this video (as in with Calli or whoever was handling the settings for the video.)

Funny that you mention that this was different, because there's like 3 or 4 tracks on the album that are completely off what she usually does, she was feeling really experimental (Even more than usual).

I really liked the off kilter rap part where the flow went crazy because it led into the line 'Take control' - so I feel like it was on purpose. As usual your lyric breakdowns are so on point and helpful, they really helped me visualize the song!
Recommendation wise I'd choose Reflect by Calli's genmate Gura (A mixture of English/Japanese and Greek - but with EN subtitles) it's a unique song and lyrically deep.

Knox if you wanna see some different work from her you can catch up to her past persona, Demon Dice (i recommend the last album: Shut up, get happy). She stills makes music as both of them, and usually people ask for discretion when talking about it, but you can react and mention anything you want without getting in trouble, she personally said its ok for others to talk about it
It really feels like the opening the calliope mori season 2, the identity struggles are starting to get resolved , she knows who she is, or at least who she isn’t, has some idea of what she is doing and is self aware now. Let’s see where we go next

That song u intro'd the video with is....spectacular, Knox 👏👏
chipmunk sound is her actually trying to hit the upper end of her range, doesn't quite get it imo, and the master doesn't do her any favors... great song, and the last rap segment is one of my favorite bits of writing and delivery she's done but the singing wasn't her strongest... it's def. come a long way from when she started but this would be a challange for anyone, the range asked of her is nuts.
The off kilter delivery was def. intentional coupled with her doing some kind of exaugurated mix of idol dancing and rap performance at the same time, i think it's about streaching the lines and putting more in not sure it's 100% successful but it grew on me a lot after a couple of listens
'envying the stage' makes me think she's looking at the rest of the idols at the company, performing live and to real crowds. It makes me think she's looking at other challanges she can take on even if she keeps being the character, maybe stepping towrds the traditional idol role more.
Later in the song she mentions never thinking she's beg to be deceaserd -- maybe beg to stay the character? There's been some shakeups at the company she's at and some characters have been shirked into retirement and a lot of the stars had to come to terms with if they make mistakes the charcaters they've been playing can ultimately be taken away from them -- sure she could keep gong as an artist, but she sure seems to like being mori -- would she beg to stay if she fucked up? Would it come to that?
btw, the tech they use to actually do the live shows is kinda nuts if you've never seen it. They actually project the vtubers onto a stage as 'holorams' (no idea what the right term for it is...volumentric displays? basically it looks like either magic or scifi.) using real time motion tracking, augmented reality, and some other magic to let them perform live in character to live music. as someone with the bare basics of mixing/music/ live show knowledge and a decent bit of tech it's kinda mind boggling what must go into making the show go off seamlessly
The off-kilter part also meshes perfectly with the scenery in the MV, with the church (-> her world) falling to pieces around her as she spills out her dark thoughts, lost in this broken flow.
But then she turns it around with "Take control!", transitioning out of that set (the only indoor/closed location) and not returning to it for the rest of the video. While it's not a perfect world she finds herself in and she has to fight herself even, it's open and free to explore - not as cold and restricted as the church setting was.
If you like calliope songs you will love DemonDice's music. I recommend some of her songs from her newest ep. Actually all demon dices songs are amazing so u can go ahead and react to anything and I’d watch
If you're having difficulty making out the words, there's always the option of turning on English subtitles. For song releases she tends to use the official lyrics as proper subtitles rather than letting TH-cam autogenerate approximate subtitles.
fate truly did align for this one this whole album really is super interesting to see her try and tackle all of these different sounds while still makin banger music plus the idea of more 3d MVs gets me excited
I do like hearing people react to Calli's music, big fan of hers. Seeing other people's perspectives on her writing is super interesting. She packs so much stuff in there that I don't always catch the details, too - I absolutely the symbolism in the "Diamonds or Spades" line for example.
On "Numbing Pain is Numbing Happiness" - I think it relates to the void inside stuff. She's supposed to be cold, emotionless, and that suppresses pain, but it suppresses happiness too.
More of a fan of her slower raps too, when she goes really fast her voice does get lost a bit.

All the songs on this album are different from each other and I'm glad she tries new genres and does so well on each of them. My favorite song in this new album is Resting Power and I hope you will react to it at some point.

It's funny you keep mentioning fate. When I saw Mori's 3d model, it reminds me of the Sabre class from Fate/Stay Night.
Calli has a new song called CapSule with another Hololive member, Suisei. It's her first song under Universal Music which is absolutely wild if you want to check that out.
If you're willing to dive into the rabbit hole, Tokoyami Towa's Palette which is her first original. Lyrics are in Japanese but they put the translations with through the CC.
Also if you want to check out Suisei's stuff, she's also fantastic but also with Japanese lyrics. Stellar Stellar is probably my favourite but if you're looking for newer stuff, Template is one of her latest releases (doesn't seem to have the English translations on her lyrics as of this comment)
Last recommendation for Hololive (honestly all of them are really good), Ayunda Risu from their Indonesian branch has an original called Alice&u. It has a lot of easter eggs in the song and her vocal range is AMAZING. The majority of the song is in English too with the few JP and ID lines translated through the CC as well. If you do happen to react to this song, I highly recommend looking at an external lyrics page for this because there is a hidden easter egg that is a lot easier to see if you can see all of the lyrics on one page.

Absolutely love your reviews, so fun to see your take and insight. I would love to see you go through her album, but I also know that's asking a lot lol. I think you would love "Scuffed Up Age" the most and find it the most interesting. Calli also said that "SUA" was her favorite song she's made so far.
Wow, that was a quick react. Her new Album is overall pretty mixed, style wise. But then again, Calli always said that she want's to keep things evolving, trying new things. Not wanting to have her music sound the same.
As far as i know, here she specifically looked into the limits of her vocal range.
She rap fast. That's why you should aways check if there are subtittles (there are).
A common pattern I find in her lyric writing is that she often try to tell a story where the last verse is a contrast to the first verse and the last hook or chorus the is a slight variation but tells a completely opposite message to the first. Then everything in between ties these ends neatly together. It makes the song feel like a journey ot like her experiencing character development within the confines of the song. It is very masterfully made and just always works.

Closed Caption for Calli's songs are either your best friend or completely useless. This track, it's the former. I'd recommend making a habit of trying to turn on the cc every time just in case.

EEEEY. just watched you reaction to Red from calli and was planning to suggest this. well played man.
I heard someone mention during the “end of a life” i think it was called, the slow, lofi-esk song she did, that it was about her leaving her friends within underground rapping behind at the start of the pandemic, to follow this hololive route, whilst they all went to their 9-5 jobs. I think that long lost relationship you brought up at the beginning, relates to that. That’s what i got when I first listened to this song.
One thing I noticed when she went into the off-kilter section was that it almost feels like she's running too fast and tripping over the words until at the end she resolves that turmoil with the line "Take Control" and moves into a more controlled style.

I really love all your breakdown on Calli's songs.
Her music definitely seems like the kind of thing that you listen to over and over and appreciate it more over time. I've noticed that in a lot of her music it's hard to understand and follow along with the beginning of the song, by the middle you're picking up on the flow and concept of the song, then by end you're jamming along. Then you go back and listen to it again and the whole song clicks.

First time watching your channel but ty for telling what the song is about
So in the most recent members only stream she did was a watch-along to the Hololive "Link Your Wish" concert and she said that before Hololive she would go perform infront of a crowd of 5 people usually and most of the time doubting they even liked her music but now that she's experienced a concert hall full (well as full as Japanese regulations allow rn). It came up when a fellow Holomem was performing and they had the same past just as an underground idol in Japan
Also, since this song was written and done well before the weekend I believe she was feeling empty with the images of her past career before Hololive and all she got to see with Hololive was some number on the screen of how many views or likes but now that she experienced the view and the love given by fans as she performed it most likely helped her mentally. Now her along with the others who got their first taste of the stage have a drive to get back to that stage and do even better.

I think most of this album is her trying to expore areas of music that she hasn't been able to yet. It's hit or miss for me, but it's really cool to hear everything that she's capable of

you can either feel it as half time 5/4 or as 4+4+2. its not exactly common in rap but there are examples if look for them. its a severely underutilised tool in my opinion.
