My dying area is about the size of the area you’re using here. I have an old metal cookie sheet (my wife throwing out) with a piece of packing paper taped to it. I knocked a bottle of dye over while working. The pan’s lip kept the mess contained and I was able pour most of it back in the bottle. I hope this helps anyone watching.

great video. after you dye your project, do you use rtc to finish? looking to try this on veg tan for some projects to eliminate having to buy multiple sides of leather.
I have a question. Not sure if it's something you could make into a video or not. But any insight would be appreciated. I have been wanting to build a suit of armor. I've probably watched a thousand leather working videos on youtube but I always come back to Weaver leather and Chuck's videos when I want to do things the right way. Keep up the great videos and congrats on your 100,000 subscribers. A good idea, in my opinion, for a video would be how to fold leather, skiving the thickness to get it to fold right etc..Just a thought thanks.

Chuck you have been one of my biggest inspirations to working with leather. I'm doing projects I never thought I had the abilities to do before. Thanks solely to your informative videos on pattern creation and all of leather element videos. Thank you so much for giving me the guidance and information I needed to take my projects to the next level.
I love watching your videos, and am just getting started into leather working. I am getting ready to make a bible cover for myself out of veg tan. I would like to use a wood burning tool on it and have a variable temp wood burner. Is it possible to dye the leather after burning the design on the leather? Thank you.
Helpful video! I'd love to see a video demonstrating the use of dyes to change the color of leather that's already been dyed. This could a discussion of the drawbacks and problems with doing this as well as how to make a color change successful. What preparation must be done to the leather beforehand? What happens when changing from a dark color like black to a color like green or red?
Hi thanks, your tutorial so useful . But may I ask something . I tried to deep dye with black color like you did and then made leather dry almost 12 hours before I made wallet from it. And the result is very good. but after putting my wallet on top of another wallet that is natural vegtan, the black color of the color wallet moves / clings to the natural vegtan color. Any treatment to leather after deep dye?
Hi Krida, Once the black dye has dried we recommend taking a cloth and buffing away any dye residue and then applying a top coat. This will seal in the dye and should keep it from rubbing off. We also recommend using Fiebing's Pro Dye.
I have a question about the work bench in almost every video that chuck is in. I see there is what looks like black rubber matting built into the bench I am trying to actually figure what it is and where would a person find something similar? Thank you for putting out awesome content
Hi Ethan! The black rubber is called a poundo board and Chuck has two of the 12" x 24" laying on his table to make one big cutting area. We'll link them below so you can check them out. Hope that answers your question! www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/3461-01/silent-poundo-board/pr_5776
Love this, but I have questions... In order to get a good 'purple' color on a finished piece, should I use Veg-Tan? And then what about sealing in the dye; is there a product to use AFTER dying leather, to keep it from fading?
Great video! Very helpful. I was hoping I could get some advice. A friend of mine hunts invasive species. He has given me several python skins he gets from Florida. I was wondering... your demonstration uses regular cow leather. Will that dye work on snakeskin? And which technique would work best? I would think that the only one that could handle the irregularities of the scales would be the dipping. Thanks for your time and the video!
I am a bit late to the show, but i am.a.beginner leather worker from.canada. thabk you for your videos! ❤ i appreciate your knowledge. I work with 4" 7-9 oz leather with 44" cuts. Best way to dye them without making them look blotchy? Im havinf a hard time with mine looking streaky! What am i doing wrong? 😢
Love everything you do, thanks chuck.also how about showing..how too sharpen my edge bevlers? I've had trouble with getting them sharp. Thanks for all your hard work.from..Pgh.
Hi Kevin, We actually have a video on sharpening edgers as well as some other tools, we'll link it below for you! th-cam.com/video/phAeANzrP2w/w-d-xo.html
You are soooooooo good! I am getting into leabthercrafting because of you! Your energy and passion is contagious. I am learning like crazy because of you. THANK YOU!!!
Enjoy the videos, great tips n tricks! Question: is it possible to remove a dye and re-dye? I'm looking for info, best I've found us soak in denatured alcohol, let dry, then dye. My project. Was given a simple cheap holster, but its color is too light (kinda natural color). Not sure how it's current color is, but I'd like to make it dark brown
Chuck, What tool do you like best for filling or stamping a boarder line. Darrell Dawson, I just finished the arm cover you made. Not perfect but looks good for a new be.
Hi Chuck, I just started my leather crafting and have found you here. Your tips and tricks are awesome thank you for your help in like beginners like me.
Nice video man Could you give some advice please I have a motorbike seat that has yellow stripes in it that am looking to dye bright green to suit the new colour scheme any advice for preping the leather before I dye it ? Thanks
I have 2 leather chairs one is great it has a nice smooth matte sheen all over, the other has sticky rough strips only on the top of the arms. I can take my finger and rub the surface and roll the sticky leather off. I cleaned it with a little dish soap and water with a brush. I also used leather cleaner/conditioner. It made the surface really sticky. I dried it with a towel and I’m keeping it covered. It almost looks like someone wore it down then dyed it and never sealed it. It’s supposed to be smooth but it feels more like suede. How do I get it back to smooth like the matching chair??
Hi Chuck I made that crazy horse belt and it came out awesome. I would like to know how to put a liner on it. It doesn't look like their is enough room to run a stich it on because of the spots. Keep up the great work,
nice can you show us repair of couch or purse or coat. also this was my first video so what is the other bottle used for/ / what would you use to dye a couch
Chuck, I'm make a hip bag/belt piece, and I don't want to use gussets because of the style I'm aiming for. I want it to lay against the hip like a draw string bag, kind if. Can you show us how to put a bottom on a bag/pouch without gussets?
Hi John, The only other way I know of is to paint in dye with a “Fan Brush” and brush from the edge inward so the edge gets the heavier dye and the interior gets less. It’s not a perfect way to go but it looks pretty good and I may thin the dye a bit too so you have a little more control. You’ll see some light brush strokes but with some practice, you can get it pretty even. Good luck with it!
Hello! Just found you and love your videos. I’ve watched several already. I was wondering if these techniques could be used to re-dye a Gillio Firenze planner cover. They are made from epoca leather, I believe they are veg tanned (but would that only apply to their undyed line?). Mine is dyed, but they are “uncoated & porous.” You can’t use leather cleaners or anything on them but a damp cloth. I purchased one used, and it has more damage than shown in photos. In one area, it looks like someone tried to clean a spot and rubbed down to the natural leather. I was wondering if I could dye it a darker color without ruining it (visually or tactilely) as they are very pricey. I splurged on this to spark joy during oncology appointments when I need to take notes and schedule procedures … you know … a piece of beautiful leather to take away some of the sting, lol. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this video. I’m a long haul trucker so my ‘shop’ is literally in the cab of my truck. I always seem to get a splotchy finish with my dye but I tried dip dyeing with the Fiebings pro and it’s perfect. Fast, no big mess and consistent. I just got an order for a dozen pouches and this process was so fun I made another 6 just for kicks and giggles! Thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick.
I just ordered my tools and a piece of buffalo leather because I love the feel. I know that these videos don't talk about the buffalo... but that's okay. I am learning so many tips and tricks from Chuck. I have watched his videos many times before I started investing in this craft. It would be nice if he has some advice about working with the Buffalo... it's much softer and probably not as easy to see the stitch holes? Thanks Chuck for giving us these videos.
Hey Chuck! Yes your videos are very helpful! I used your knife sheath video set to make my first sheath, and made 50 bucks, and gained a satisfied customer! It was the first leather piece I sold!
Love the video. I agree. The airbrushed design would look awesome on a brief case. One question though. How do you seal the dye so that it doesnt come out? Do u use resolene or an acrylic based finisher? Can resolene be used? New to leather work.
Yes, Resolene can be used to seal the dye. Every top coat is a little bit different, check out the video below to see some options! th-cam.com/video/8HtcBgkeQpg/w-d-xo.html
Hello happy new year i have a question maybe u can help me i have a leather jacket with some small reflective pieces very small im wondering if leather dye will work to cover these to make them dark vs the slight silver color like watching ur videos keep them coming
Hey Chuck, another great project and presented very well. I would like to see more about air brushing and some of the special effects that can be produced.
I love all your videos. I learn so much even the things I am not really ready to even try to do yet. I save all your videos so I am able to watch once.. then again whenever I want to watch them again.. thank you.
I have had problems recently with blotchy finishes using Pro Dye. I believe it’s due to the leather because some pieces dye evenly. While making a visor using 6/7 ounce for brim and 4/5 for strap, the strap was blotchy and the 6/7 dyed beautifully. I dyed with a swab. Any thoughts?
Hi Bob, That’s a tough call. It sounds like you have the technique down so the only other option is the quality of the tannage. The old schoolers will moisten the leather before dyeing, so, that may be an option. Another old school trick is to clean the leather with some Deglazer before dying. I may say try either with scrap and see if that helps.
I'm starting leathercraft. I got a "practice side" of leather, a pattern from Corter Leather, and I sat down to cut and dye it today. I'm probably doing everything out of order but I'm figuring it out. I think I'll come here for upgrades to tools etc once I get going. :) I'm so excited to learn how to dye this leather properly so it's not... so ... flat. XD
I am new to creating with leather. Your videos have been very helpful and educational. Look forward to seeing more videos to watch and learn from. Thank you
Do you have advice for repairing scuffs on sneakers with a smooth finish? Most of the shoe is smooth but those scuffs reveal the rough leather underneath the finish.
What is the best way to remove a slight sheen from leather? I purchased a near new pair of leather heels, but one shoe is slightly darker than the other. They are a camel tan shade and I want to die one or both to match but keeping the camel tan shade. What are the best products for this product and do I need to remove the slight sheen/finish on the leather before I dye since it is not raw leather?
Hi there, I just now happened to come across this video, I learned a good bit about the different affects of dyeing leather & I've enjoyed watching everyone of these that I can muster up, just wanting to thank you for your awesome helpful information, you just make my day, thank you also for answering my questions, I really appreciate this a whole bunch..
Thank you so much from an absolute beginner. I am doing leather jewelry (cuffs, embroidered bracelets, earrings) and am learning as I go. It is a wonderful pleasure to see you do these great videos, plus you are giving me so many ideas. And as always, a growing shopping list I need to practice techniques as my craft inventory grows.
Hello, thank you for your comment. We would advise you to let your dyed leather dry completely. You are also able to put a seal your leather with our Clear Leather Sealer this will give you a high gloss, and a waterproof protective coating.
I have a question that maybe you can help with in a leather element. I'm fairly new to leather work. At least to the degree of dying my own hides from veg tan. I make custom holsters, and lately I have been getting a lot of requests for Grey. Guess what...I can't find grey, can't find out how to make grey even. I can find it for suede, or in a paint, but that is it. I know it is difficult to make the leather take and hold that color, but do you have any tips or tricks that will work?? Thanks for the consideration! John
Hi there, Unfortunately there isn't really a way to lighten black leather. You can use a deglazer but all that really does is take off the top coat and some of the surface dye and will just cause for a splotchy look. Once leather has been dyed black it's pretty much going to stay that way. Sorry I don't have a solution for you!
Do you need to seal the dye after? Thinking of buying brown leather brake hoods for my bike, and dying them black, but don't want dye bleeding onto my hands while riding it. Great video btw!
Hi Pete, Yes you will want to seal the leather using a top coat. Here is a video on different top coat option: th-cam.com/video/8HtcBgkeQpg/w-d-xo.html
Hey Chuck, David here, as a new leather crafter your videos have been an enourmous help to me and still look forward to the next video. I really enjoy leather crafting.. You have been a big inspiration because you break things down really good and make it fun with your upbeat personality. Thanks! I just want to add a question. I have a kniife sheath I am working on that is going to have a carving and will need wet forming. Will the wet forming hurt the carving? Thanks
Thank you so much, David! You will lose some of the carving when you wet form. The leather will stretch when you bend and mold the holster so the impression won't be quite as deep. If you haven't yet, check out the video below on the holster we made- I just stamped the barrel of the holster and then when I wet formed it that part wasn't affected too much. Hope this helps! th-cam.com/video/xCaFJcZbKYk/w-d-xo.html
Hi there, Unfortunately, once leather is dyed dark it's probably not going to get lighter - even if you use a lighter dye, it will just add more color, not mask it. Sorry I don;t have a better answer for you!
Awesome video. I came across it because I was wondering how I would dye my leather whip. What would be your suggestion? Thank you and keep up the awesome work
I had difficulty with navy blue dye when coloring pieces for a Bicycle tool pouch. All the pieces did not dye the same so I kept adding dye resulting in several of the pieces becoming copper colored! How could I have avoided this and is there a way to remove the color or do I start anew.
Another great video! Thank you for this very informative series chuck, you always have great, well presented content! I have a request for an upcoming video. Top coats. I'd love to see a video on applying them and comparing their strengths and weaknesses (especially their resistance to water/sweat and flexibility). Not much info out there on this and it would be great to have as a reference! Thanks again!
So question, I'm wanting to dye the smooth side a lighter brown color and the back/rough side a darker brown color. Is there a way, or what's the best method to use so the darker dye doesn't soak all the way through to the other side of the leather, ruining my finish/look on the other side? I've used a dabber (the thing with a puff ball at the end of a metal handle) tried to be light on the stain and it still punched through to the other side, ruining my piece.
Hi Jason, The best thing to do for a two tone look would be to line the belt. Dye the two pieces separately and then glue them together. Otherwise you will always run the risk of bleed through unfortunately. Hope that helps!
All of your videos are very entertaining and very inspirational! Your positive and encouraging attitude has definitely pushed me to take on this hobby!
Nice, but my question is how to dye leather in car sits? Currently I have them in "Saddle Tan" But would like to get them black? How hard is it, or is it possible at all... it is a daily driver.

Hi Kevin,
We actually have a video on sharpening edgers as well as some other tools, we'll link it below for you!

Older video but
you have given me inspiration to get back into leather crafting after a few years off
Thank you
Got a new question: Can you dye a suede seat and fenders on a saddle to get a closer match to regular leather skirting? Thanks!
I'm excited to try the airbrush. But why do I want to buy an 80 stand up until??
Chuck, What tool do you like best for filling or stamping a boarder line. Darrell Dawson, I just finished the arm cover you made. Not perfect but looks good for a new be.
Hi Chuck, I just started my leather crafting and have found you here. Your tips and tricks are awesome thank you for your help in like beginners like me.
You're welcome! Thank you for watching.
Nice video man
Could you give some advice please
I have a motorbike seat that has yellow stripes in it that am looking to dye bright green to suit the new colour scheme any advice for preping the leather before I dye it ?
When dip dyeing a small piece of veg tan must the leather surface (skin side) be cleaned first? Sometimes I get ‘freckles’ on the finished surface.
Hi Chuck
I made that crazy horse belt and it came out awesome.
I would like to know how to put a liner on it.
It doesn't look like their is enough room to run a stich it on because of the spots.
Keep up the great work,
Well done Chuck!, your enthusiasm and passion for leather craft are inspiring!
Nearly 200k subscribers, just one year on. Congrats, Weaver and friends ❤
Thank you, Tom!
nice can you show us repair of couch or purse or coat. also this was my first video so what is the other bottle used for/ / what would you use to
dye a couch
Chuck, I'm make a hip bag/belt piece, and I don't want to use gussets because of the style I'm aiming for. I want it to lay against the hip like a draw string bag, kind if.
Can you show us how to put a bottom on a bag/pouch without gussets?
I like you are not a word smith, every thing you say is to the point and educational. Any other way to fade in dark edges without a spray gun.
Hi John,
The only other way I know of is to paint in dye with a “Fan Brush” and brush from the edge inward so the edge gets the heavier dye and the interior gets less. It’s not a perfect way to go but it looks pretty good and I may thin the dye a bit too so you have a little more control. You’ll see some light brush strokes but with some practice, you can get it pretty even. Good luck with it!
A must watch over for anyone coming into leather work,Chuck your the greatest!!
Thanks so much, John!
Thank you.
Chuck, you continue to amaze me. Keep the vids coming.
Thanks for the video i liked it. I love all types of leather but not the bonded one
That's great to hear, Christopher! Thanks so much!
"they're getting a very inexpensive gift card this Christmas" brilliant! Thanks Chuck.
Fantastic video series. Help on making home made dyes that are natural such as charcole and oil or cocao powder and oil etc.
Hey Chuck! Yes your videos are very helpful! I used your knife sheath video set to make my first sheath, and made 50 bucks, and gained a satisfied customer! It was the first leather piece I sold!
That's awesome! Thanks so much for watching!

Thank you, Ron! We've gotten several requests about airbrushing - we'll see what we can do!
Hi Bob,
That’s a tough call. It sounds like you have the technique down so the only other option is the quality of the tannage. The old schoolers will moisten the leather before dyeing, so, that may be an option. Another old school trick is to clean the leather with some Deglazer before dying. I may say try either with scrap and see if that helps.
Weaver Leathercraft
I appreciated your response. Will try both options with the same 4/5 hide.
Thank you
Thank you very much, Daren!
got any tips on jackets, couches, and camera bags (film photo/motion picture and videotape)?
Love this. I live in the UK, please can you tell me where I can buy your leather dye. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Melody! That means a lot!
Chuck is great!!! I love his enthusiasm! I've learned a lot watching his videos. Thank you
We have a couch that we special ordered and I hate the colo, could I take paintbrush and leather dye to it?
Thank you so much from an absolute beginner. I am doing leather jewelry (cuffs, embroidered bracelets, earrings) and am learning as I go. It is a wonderful pleasure to see you do these great videos, plus you are giving me so many ideas. And as always, a growing shopping list I need to practice techniques as my craft inventory grows.
Thank you, Linda! So glad you are enjoying leather work!
I’ve learned a lot from Chuck and enjoy working with leather.
Great to hear! Thank you!
Hey Chuck! Loved this video. How long should we let the dye dry? Also, do we need to seal the dye with anything else?
John
@weaver leathercraft Can you take a black gun holster and dye it brown?
Hi there,
Unfortunately there isn't really a way to lighten black leather.
Hi Pete,
Yes you will want to seal the leather using a top coat. Here is a video on different top coat option: th-cam.com/video/8HtcBgkeQpg/w-d-xo.html

Thanks Chuck!
Very informative. 👍
Helped me a lot.
Thanks Chuck, I've seen that video but i'll give it another look.
Great channel one question can you dye dark leather a lighter shade thanks Leighton UK
Hi there,
Unfortunately, once leather is dyed dark it's probably not going to get lighter - even if you use a lighter dye, it will just add more color, not mask it. Sorry I don;t have a better answer for you!
Thank you for taking the time to answer much appreciated 👍🏼
Awesome video. I came across it because I was wondering how I would dye my leather whip. What would be your suggestion? Thank you and keep up the awesome work
Hi Kevin,
I would say using a sponge or wool dauber should work for something like this!
@@WeaverLeatherSupply Thank you I will try it and see how it works :)
You can get masking paper at harbor freight for cheap, lasts forever and absorbs well!
Thank you! We will definitely add this to the list of videos!
Hi Jason,
The best thing to do for a two tone look would be to line the belt. Dye the two pieces separately and then glue them together. Otherwise you will always run the risk of bleed through unfortunately. Hope that helps!
All of your videos are very entertaining and very inspirational! Your positive and encouraging attitude has definitely pushed me to take on this hobby!
Thank you so much!
Nice, but my question is how to dye leather in car sits? Currently I have them in "Saddle Tan" But would like to get them black? How hard is it, or is it possible at all... it is a daily driver.
