    My dying area is about the size of the area you’re using here. I have an old metal cookie sheet (my wife throwing out) with a piece of packing paper taped to it. I knocked a bottle of dye over while working. The pan’s lip kept the mess contained and I was able pour most of it back in the bottle. I hope this helps anyone watching.

    Helpful video! I'd love to see a video demonstrating the use of dyes to change the color of leather that's already been dyed. This could a discussion of the drawbacks and problems with doing this as well as how to make a color change successful. What preparation must be done to the leather beforehand? What happens when changing from a dark color like black to a color like green or red?

Keep up the great videos and congrats on your 100,000 subscribers. I always seem to get a splotchy finish with my dye but I tried dip dyeing with the Fiebings pro and it’s perfect. Fast, no big mess and consistent. I just got an order for a dozen pouches and this process was so fun I made another 6 just for kicks and giggles! Thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick.

I'm probably doing everything out of order but I'm figuring it out. • @jaredmurray9868
      @jaredmurray9868 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Airbrush I would say so it gets into all the creases. Unless thats what you want then use a sponge. What may look cool is if the old and new go well together to go with the block and rag so it "bleeds through" color wise. I personally use sponges for big stuff and daubers for tight areas but its real touch n go to make it all match.

    Well, well Chuck this is the first video of your that I've came across. Little late but worth the wait, as is said.
    I recall you mentioning 🤔... to the effect; that the most frustrating thing about making the videos is, if the viewer is enjoying or getting anything for your video(s). Well being that this is the first video of yours I've watched, actually first 2 (re-watch).
    I just needed to share with you that I believe, no I know, I got more out of your video than you ever intended. Please keep making them.

      @WeaverLeatherSupply  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John,
      The only other way I know of is to paint in dye with a “Fan Brush” and brush from the edge inward so the edge gets the heavier dye and the interior gets less. It’s not a perfect way to go but it looks pretty good and I may thin the dye a bit too so you have a little more control. You’ll see some light brush strokes but with some practice, you can get it pretty even. Good luck with it!

    Hey Chuck, David here, as a new leather crafter your videos have been an enourmous help to me and still look forward to the next video. I really enjoy leather crafting.. You have been a big inspiration because you break things down really good and make it fun with your upbeat personality. Thanks! I just want to add a question. I have a kniife sheath I am working on that is going to have a carving and will need wet forming. Will the wet forming hurt the carving? Thanks

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much, David! You will lose some of the carving when you wet form. The leather will stretch when you bend and mold the holster so the impression won't be quite as deep. If you haven't yet, check out the video below on the holster we made- I just stamped the barrel of the holster and then when I wet formed it that part wasn't affected too much. Hope this helps! th-cam.com/video/xCaFJcZbKYk/w-d-xo.html

    You asked for feedback,I'm new to leatherworking so I have only youtube to learn from.The thing I notice about youtube tutorials is that they almost always omit details that without, one cannot easily proceed.I feel I can say this being a retired teacher(music) so I know that if I'm trying to teach somebody, they will rely on me to explain all details of something they know nothing about! Your tutorials are pretty good but as I watched this one I began to wonder, what happens to daubers that I use, in other words can I clean and re-use? I don't know, so I need you to tell me. Just something to ponder on. Cheers, Mike, Waikato NZ

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike,
      You can wash and re-use daubers if you would like. they are fairly inexpensive so I don't normally re-use mine unless I dirty one for a really small project and haven;t used it much. I will say, try to re-use with a similar shade or darker because the wool does hold on to the color so say you use it for black dye, I wouldn't then go and use it on a light brown next time in case there is any black left in the dauber. But, really it's up to personal preference on whether to re-use or throw them away!

    So much energy and enthusiasm! What is the harm of getting dye on skin? I never have my gloves on hand when I need them so I often end up getting a bit dyed myself, is that particularly bad?

      Hi Mark,
      There's no harm in it - your skin will absorb dye very easily so it just saves having to try and scrub dye off your hands by wearing gloves. 👍

    Fantastic video series. Help on making home made dyes that are natural such as charcole and oil or cocao powder and oil etc.

    Hey Chuck, thanks for teaching the different dye techniques. I found it VERY helpful for the type of work I do. (Mostly small Harley Davidson dash pieces). I am looking for a more consistent application and I am going to try the dip dye technique. VERY INFORMATIVE, Keep them coming!!!!

    I have had problems recently with blotchy finishes using Pro Dye. I believe it’s due to the leather because some pieces dye evenly. While making a visor using 6/7 ounce for brim and 4/5 for strap, the strap was blotchy and the 6/7 dyed beautifully. I dyed with a swab. Any thoughts?

      Hi Bob,
      That’s a tough call. It sounds like you have the technique down so the only other option is the quality of the tannage. The old schoolers will moisten the leather before dyeing, so, that may be an option. Another old school trick is to clean the leather with some Deglazer before dying. I may say try either with scrap and see if that helps.

      I appreciated your response. Will try both options with the same 4/5 hide.

    Love this, but I have questions... In order to get a good 'purple' color on a finished piece, should I use Veg-Tan?
    And then what about sealing in the dye; is there a product to use AFTER dying leather, to keep it from fading?

    Have you ever tried using puppy pads underneath your dye project?
    You can find them on sale and cut them to the size you need!
    Thank You for your wonderful instructional videos

    Love the video. I agree. The airbrushed design would look awesome on a brief case. One question though. How do you seal the dye so that it doesnt come out? Do u use resolene or an acrylic based finisher? Can resolene be used? New to leather work.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Resolene can be used to seal the dye. Every top coat is a little bit different, check out the video below to see some options!

    I have 2 leather chairs one is great it has a nice smooth matte sheen all over, the other has sticky rough strips only on the top of the arms. I can take my finger and rub the surface and roll the sticky leather off. I cleaned it with a little dish soap and water with a brush. I also used leather cleaner/conditioner. It made the surface really sticky. I dried it with a towel and I’m keeping it covered. It almost looks like someone wore it down then dyed it and never sealed it. It’s supposed to be smooth but it feels more like suede. How do I get it back to smooth like the matching chair??

    Great video! Very helpful. I was hoping I could get some advice. A friend of mine hunts invasive species. He has given me several python skins he gets from Florida. I was wondering... your demonstration uses regular cow leather. Will that dye work on snakeskin? And which technique would work best? I would think that the only one that could handle the irregularities of the scales would be the dipping. Thanks for your time and the video!
