Thanks for the video and comments! saw these at a local music store not knowing what they were, even though I had the k550s for a while now! Glad I won't be wasting my money on these with the messed up, not well thought out cable / jack.
I own the K550. These appear, not to be a replacement, but a separate model with a separate purpose. They have shortened the high quality cable, removed the metal 1/4" adapter and added phone controls. The K551 is for mobile, not for HiFi or MidFi home use.
I agree with the cable. Plus the three buttons are very close, sometime it's hard to tell if I'm pressing the right button. Not completely happy with the sound yet. But very interested in the sound compare with the K550 after burned in.
If it wasn't for the cord issue and having a cover on something like an I-pod, pad or phone. Id get these for sure, I need a good pair of portable 32ohm cans. At home I like my DT990 600ohmPremium ''not pro's'' for the type of sound they make the best. I would like something similar that is 32ohm with a shortened cord then were used to having on most Audiophile headphones.
these are really beautiful headphones in my opinion. i really like the minimalist and understated design. however, having tried out the k550 at the local best buy, i wasn't too impressed with the sound. the pair of audio technica ATH-A700X that i tried at the same time sounded better to me. what is your opinion on the K550? you say it's better than the k551, but compared to other closed headphones, how do you feel about the k550's?
I had one of their really portable/small AKG models(forget which one as I returned them) that came with one and they cans cost $100, It was a hard case.
I have the 1970's Pioneer Monitor II, the Cable Was permanent. so i fund on EBay a set of Harman Kardon Headphones witch Were Broke, so i took the Cable and the parts to make detachable, and i put it my Pioneer! now i have vintage set headphones with the Control mic Cable!
Cool unboxing, but you seem to get less for more money with this new version. The cable definately looks thinner and of a lesser quality than the K550. And no 1/4 jack? All the iPhone stuff makes no sense, its much to big for outdoor use, tried it once and looked like an idiot. Ill be interested to know if the sound has changed.
pro700mkII is a very bassheavy headphone, m50 is rather neutral in presentation. pro700 is darker and more well bodied albeit lacks in tightness of the bass. the m50 is not as bassy, but it has quite a bit of heft on the low freq, tighter in quality. if you really want bass, pro700 is great, you might need an amp to tightens up the bass though.
I have very bad experience with AKG headphones. I own AKG K319 in-ear headphones and after a couple of months "R" bud started to make cracky noises while listening to music. I couldn't live with that, but I didn't want to send them to local dealer, so I listened to them and after a week from that decision headphones didn't play the sound. It seems like something is wrong with the connection in cables. Sound wise it's great, but for high end in-ear AKG which are not cheap, not worth the price.
Why would a pair of $329 headphones not have a detachable cable especially one that has a permanent iphone control? They're usually the first things to fail under stress
I thought they would have put a detachable cord and a thicker cord for a model that's supposed to replace the K550s. I would rather buy the K550s, they look better anyways and I doubt there is any sound quality difference between the two models.
Why would they make the input jack sooo big? Who, nowadays, has their iPhone/iPod/iPad sans case? It's been yrs since I've seen an iPhone without a case.
Too bad you didn't do the sound review even though the 550 is better. Think lots of ppl would be interested in the soundquality instead of only the looks ;) Can you tell me in what way the 550 is better? I can still buy the older model from the internet.
Hey, Do you think these are significantly better than the AKG K550? I just bought some K550's, then found these are going for the same amount...should I get the K551 and send the others back? Please reply asap as I have few days to return :)
The only quell that i have with these, would be the cable, it is very thin and fragile, and the fact that it is not replaceable means that once you break it, which can happen easily, you need to get another pair.
Heh Tah You could always buy the K550. I have them, and I've completely fell in love with them. Though, the cable is super long, but I manage to use them on the go with the cable being braided.
got the k550, which i also prefer. the headphone is very uncomfortable. its ok for the first 40 minuts, but then.... my beyer DT 880 is like heaven for my head compared to the k550. but the k550 sounds great too, and looks awesome
the cable and terminal jack are very disappointing because your right "hifiguy528" that would never fit into a portable player or iDevice with a case and a lot of people use cases with their mobile electronic devices, and on top of that AKG is charging more for features that are of cheaper design than the K550 :/... AKG is know for making some fantastic headphones... These however are a disappointment on the design front. On another note, great unboxing as always. Cheers :)
Maybe i'm wrong, but just looking at these headphones, and all the details, it seems just a commercial move from AKG to contrast Beats in that precise market spot... although i ain't listen to that, so maybe there is quality too, other than the look...
Dear HifiGuy528 i'm looking into purchasing headphone for around $150, what would you recommend as the best overall sounding headphones for that price?
Quality of audio, I cannot comment. However, I can say that my set of headphones stopped working after a moth. It was an entire month before anyone from AKG responded to my emails. To make matters worse, they never replaced or repaird my headphones. Take this comment as you may.
Why would you bother getting the K551s if you already have the K550s? They're identical apart from a flimsier, shorter cable (with volume control) and no 1/4 inch jack. It's just a K550 tweaked for use only on mobile devices.
hello hifiguy523 I wonder if you could take your turn on the headphones akg k545? I own k551 detection dogs and how they sound in compares thx keep doing your good vids // Ante
do you get paid cause personally i know alot of people with loads of headphones but you! you literally buy every audiophile headphone that exist i mean stop making me jealous :)
you mean the price ??? haha quality control i dont think so did you ever try Beats dr dre pro before !! sure you dont and i have one thats why i know which is the best
recently broke my 550's, although my fault would not of happend if their was a detachable cable (please do this akg). I took them into the shop I bought them to get them repaired with no warranty, the guy walked away and came back with a new pair and said it's how akg are. they have amazing customer service. although i dont see the point in these, colour scheme is great but who the fuck wears these outdoors? also, the 550's fit in my iphone head jack fine with a case... get the 550's they are great :)
I hate it when apple people go on about the phones build quality and design and then ruin it by using some case on it, therefore I don't care if the cable doesn't fit through the case, serves them right. :D
So, as far as I can see, they made a worse headphone. I like the shorter cable, but this jack is just ridiculous. Go figure why they didn't included a detachable cable, as portable use is the clear target of this headphone. I couldn't be happier with my K550.
Thanks for the video and comments! saw these at a local music store not knowing what they were, even though I had the k550s for a while now!

Input cable is vexing considering all the Otterboxes, Griffin cases.
These sound absolutely great. Without a detatchable cable at that price level I'd try something else though.
If it wasn't for the cord issue and having a cover on something like an I-pod, pad or phone. Id get these for sure, I need a good pair of portable 32ohm cans. At home I like my DT990 600ohmPremium ''not pro's'' for the type of sound they make the best. For $150 close set of headphones, either get the ATH-M50s or the Shure SRH-840s
these are really beautiful headphones in my opinion. i really like the minimalist and understated design. however, having tried out the k550 at the local best buy, i wasn't too impressed with the sound. the pair of audio technica ATH-A700X that i tried at the same time sounded better to me.

Perfect example of function following form.
It's a recording, just fast forward to where he takes it out of the box if you care so much.
I really think that AKG should start giving cases with their headphones...
It is, like you said, a shame that the headphones don't feature a detachable cable since they do cost over 300 dollars.
AKG make great headphones. I wish they made K550 with detachable cable
I had one of their really portable/small AKG models(forget which one as I returned them) that came with one and they cans cost $100, It was a hard case.
logitech ue6000 and ue9000 review coming soon? Great video!
I have the 1970's Pioneer Monitor II, the Cable Was permanent.
so i fund on EBay a set of Harman Kardon Headphones witch Were Broke,
so i took the Cable and the parts to make detachable, and i put it my Pioneer!
now i have vintage set headphones with the Control mic Cable!
Seems like a shame not to have a a 1/4" adapter with those. I agree, the cable seems disappointing for headphones costing that much.
mm..I expected detachable cable this time. AKG have made a detachable cable version of K701, 601. Why not this one
I like the black on black of the k550 but like to have the controller as well
Cool unboxing, but you seem to get less for more money with this new version. The cable definately looks thinner and of a lesser quality than the K550. And no 1/4 jack? All the iPhone stuff makes no sense, its much to big for outdoor use, tried it once and looked like an idiot.
Ill be interested to know if the sound has changed.
build quality is supreme
With no case, a skinny non-detachable cable, and a price tag of $329, it better sound a LOT better than the K550.
what about sound, man?
pro700mkII is a very bassheavy headphone, m50 is rather neutral in presentation. pro700 is darker and more well bodied albeit lacks in tightness of the bass. the m50 is not as bassy, but it has quite a bit of heft on the low freq, tighter in quality. if you really want bass, pro700 is great, you might need an amp to tightens up the bass though.

soo pumped for an akg unboxing until i found out it wasn't the k267 :/
Why would they make the input jack sooo big? Who, nowadays, has their iPhone/iPod/iPad sans case? It's been yrs since I've seen an iPhone without a case.
Yeah, I have the ZX700 and I like them
I'm pretty sure HiFiGuy used a Samsung Galaxy S3 which has aptX support in Bluetooth
when will they make a model with removable cord... and ive already got a name for it... the AKG K552
Mike, what are your ultimate headphones to date?
Yes, how does it sound comparing to 550 with the same hardware?
Why don't you stay on Beyerdynamic, and try the Custom one pro's? seems to fit your needs..
Lol true duct tape diagonally would make wire thicker but it doesn't look quite nice
Too bad you didn't do the sound review even though the 550 is better. Think lots of ppl would be interested in the soundquality instead of only the looks ;)
Can you tell me in what way the 550 is better? I can still buy the older model from the internet.
Wow. Fuck that cable. I genuinely would have considered these as my next headphone purchase if they fixed the cable issue.
Is there any significant difference in sound quality compared to k550s? Which would you prefer??
Are you ever going to review the akg k551? You uploaded this in November, I think it's time. But it's not coming, is it?
Hey,
Do you think these are significantly better than the AKG K550?
I just bought some K550's, then found these are going for the same amount...should I get the K551 and send the others back?
Please reply asap as I have few days to return :)
What do you think about pro700mk2 vs m50? which one s better for basshead? one more questions, just curous how many headphones do you have?
Can you please get your hands on the Yamaha Pro 400 and 500?
The only quell that i have with these, would be the cable, it is very thin and fragile, and the fact that it is not replaceable means that once you break it, which can happen easily, you need to get another pair.
that's probably the only thing which is holding me back from buying it.
Heh Tah

These or the Logitech UE 6000?
I've just subscribed to your channel, you're amazing!
Is there any term with -phile other than audiophile not being related to something bad?
Oh man, I was so excited for the k551s... The cable is very disappointing indeed. I will just buy the k550s.
Does the volume rocker work with other devices like a notebook or a other brand smartphone? Thnx.
what about the Beyers Custom 1 Pro's you just reviewed?
Ok sorry for not knowing much about headphones but whats so bad about non detatchable cable?
Nice....are they better than the P5's.
what is the striking defference in k550 and these? do these sound better?..
What will you choose for electro music, beats or k550's?
I agree with mr unknownduelist1 the quality is just amazing badass headphones
Hi! Do AKG have any model closed back with detachable cable?
Cheers
Dear HifiGuy528 i'm looking into purchasing headphone for around $150, what would you recommend as the best overall sounding headphones for that price?

are you sure these are replacing the k550s? or just an add on?
the K551's features seem to defeat its own intended purpose...
What's better for a commuter? These or PSB M4U2's?
OK, thank you!!!
can you buy some of these headphones at a store near? and do you need an amp for these kind of headphone?
Can you get the AKG TIESTO K267, K167 AND K67!! :) THANK YOU
always cut away and not towards yourself when using sharp objects
DEAR HiFiGuy528 WHAT YOU THINK, WILL AKG MAKE EAR PADS FOR K550, SO I CAN REPLACE THEM ON MY HEADPHONES?
Nice! thanks.
Why would you bother getting the K551s if you already have the K550s? They're identical apart from a flimsier, shorter cable (with volume control) and no 1/4 inch jack. It's just a K550 tweaked for use only on mobile devices.
don't sound the same.
not so tweaked for mobiles, sound too quiet with nokia, still detailed and fun at quiet sound
is the bass of that is puchy like the xb500?
how would you compared K551 to the MDR 1R?
Looking for the same answer ;)
Do you know if the control talk thing works with android?
I cannot believe they made the cable non removable again, how many versions do the need to make for that to happen?
And that's not enough, the cable quality is quite villainous.
th-cam.com/video/MaconpoKnM8/w-d-xo.html
what if u break the cable?
How are these compared to the AKG K 167/267 ?
The cable us what really bothers me about these headphones. Maybe AKG thought they'd be too perfect it they did that.
hello hifiguy523
I wonder if you could take your turn on the headphones akg k545?
I own k551 detection dogs and how they sound in compares thx
keep doing your good vids
// Ante
any difference in sound vs k550?
AKG 551 fail- no detachable cable. why they even make this model?
K thanks
Do it sound good??
do you get paid cause personally i know alot of people with loads of headphones but you! you literally buy every audiophile headphone that exist i mean stop making me jealous :)
you mean the price ??? haha quality control i dont think so did you ever try Beats dr dre pro before !! sure you dont and i have one thats why i know which is the best
Не подскажите, с SONY A-15 как они споются ?
700mkii is much bass heavy than m50, but bass is less tight
recently broke my 550's, although my fault would not of happend if their was a detachable cable (please do this akg). I took them into the shop I bought them to get them repaired with no warranty, the guy walked away and came back with a new pair and said it's how akg are. they have amazing customer service. although i dont see the point in these, colour scheme is great but who the fuck wears these outdoors? also, the 550's fit in my iphone head jack fine with a case... get the 550's they are great :)
agree, but then the prices will go up significantly :/
how does the bass compare against sony xb line? old or new
I hate it when apple people go on about the phones build quality and design and then ruin it by using some case on it, therefore I don't care if the cable doesn't fit through the case, serves them right. :D
That would be mine...If it existed....*sniff*
what these the best between 550 and 551
it should be called 549 or 548 bcs it has less stuff..
The cable is a deal breaker
Mike don't deny that you're rich :D you're obviously rich
So, as far as I can see, they made a worse headphone. I like the shorter cable, but this jack is just ridiculous. Go figure why they didn't included a detachable cable, as portable use is the clear target of this headphone.
I couldn't be happier with my K550.
add off you mean! ;)
"1" stands for "i"
They look like the logitech ue 9000
