The older you get you will find that tradition is what memories are made of. I haven’t decorated for the past 3 year due to suffering grief over the sudden passing of my identical twin sister. This year I’m going to do it reluctantly but I do love beautiful things and my sister loved that about me. So my vote is decorate like a rock star!

Celebrate her life this year as you remember her. How about making a special ornament of tiny picture frames with sepia photos of the two of you or of her alone? I lost my beloved sister last year and still tear up when I think of her. Its her birthday Nov 19th and I will make a special party for her, a fairy tea in the woodlands.

What a blessed life you have-so much lovely all around you!
Oh I wish I had gotten a push hair for my little Cairn boy! I also wish I had not worked so much while he was with me-I missed a lot. Oh the memories and “wishes”. He lived to 17 years old. My joy. How he is missed beyond measure.
Holidays are upon us.. I never put up a big tree in my home. I have a table top one that is lovely. I live on the same property as my daughter and her family.. I help decorate their grand 12 foot tree. That is plenty of decorating!! You have a superior design sense and I love your color palette.
      Enjoy all that is now.
      Thank you for your videos..

Sorry for your loss Denise. I lost my partner 3 years ago and I truly understand your reluctance to participate in old traditions. The tree was something he and I did together. I too love to decorate and I may consider a small tree this year. Blessings to you 🙏

Don’t be embarrassed about using the push chair for Sophie, you are being a good dog owner and looking out for her best interests. Anyone that has a issue with that is not worth your time 😊. I enjoy watching your video’s especially with Sophie in the picture. You bring a calm peaceful escape to my hectic days. Thank you

So nice that you have gotten Sophie a pet stroller. And a nice one.😊There are cute waterproof stickers with a happy symbol of a dog with a mobility issue on it which alerts others . I have seen many pet-owners with older dogs that use pet strollers. So good for dogs as they age. They love it and it keeps them mentally stimulated. You are so good to Sophie and I feel she will live for many more years.

I have only skipped the Christmas tree twice in 78 years (during Covid) since nobody was coming to visit. I did decorate the house and while it was super easy to get everything out and put it away, I missed the tree. Of course last year when I did put it up I realized how much work it was since I wire all the ornaments to the tree but was pleased in the end and the house really did feel more festive. Perhaps you could consider using your gold ornaments and introducing silver and white to make your tree compliment your living room as it is now. Don't forget that floral picks (not real ones) make fabulous fillers and only require that you know how to shove them into the tree.😂 If you want to add ribbon, you could cut lengths of a nice wired ribbon that compliments, roll it into a tight roll and then pull the middle out to make a spiraled length that can be wired to the tree - also a great filler. Can't wait to see what you do.

You could make a live centre piece arrangement for your table out of cedar, fir, red berries, white roses, dusty miller, fine branches, and ribbon. If the dish is low and long, it's the perfect shape for conservation over the dinner table. Just keep it watered like a Christmas tree, and it will last 2 to 3 weeks.

Ahhh Nicholas it’s so lovely seeing Sophie. She looks so sweet and enjoyed her walk.
The landscape of that beautiful old home is gorgeous in the Autumn colors. Thank you for taking us back there today.
Love the tour of all the lovely ornaments and trees. To answer your question, I did not put up a tree on a couple years and to be honest even though I decorated for Christmas, I felt like I’d missed the beauty of seeing the tree, and all my collection of ornaments.
It’s a personal choice, I’m sure whatever you decide will be done to perfection.
As for your precious Sophie, enjoy every moment with her and know you are giving her the best life full of your kindness and love. I had my Bella for just over 14 yrs, I still miss her. But, I have my Lilly Rose now to share my life with. She is a delight and I love her too. We always hold our fur babies in our hearts forever.
Take care and now it’s time for tea here in Northern California. ❤❤❤🐾🐾

A friend chose to shift from having one large tree and placed several small stands of decorated trees around her home and it is spectacular and chic. She changes it up every year and it is much easier as everything is smaller. You have many surfaces in your living area or dining area that you could use for this Nicholas and you are very good at arranging flowers so I am sure this talent would transfer.

I could never skip the tree. It’s the focal point to all my other Christmas decorations. In fact, I added a beautiful silver and white tree in my formal dining room and a woodland animal-themed tree for my covered porch. It is a lot of work but we really enjoy it. Hug Sophie everyday!! We lost our sweet Boston Terrier in September after 18 years. It’s not the same without him and we miss him terribly.

I’m Jewish but my husband is not, so we have fun melding our holiday traditions together. We don’t do a Xmas tree per se, but I have put together fallen branches that I embellish with faux frost (my concoction, not the store bought stuff), fairy lights and some small ornaments. Since my husband is of Norwegian ancestry, I’m going to surprise him with a Scandinavian style Xmas decor (doing my research lol). I personally don’t like over the top holiday decor, so I think this will make us both happy.

Oh how gorgeous this Scottish house is ! The gardens and the view are stunning and unforgettable of beauty and I can already feel how peaceful it is and how the simple fact of coming to have a cup of tea is relaxing and good for the mental and physical health. For the Christmas tree perhaps simply a small one with not too much decorations would be good, not too tiring or expensive and easier to put off after Christmas. Hello from Paris ❤

Yes, oh yes, we are not putting our tree up this year. We both are recuperating from a late bout of COVID and are doing the fireplace, door and table settings. We are also going to be watching for a smaller, taller, thinner tree so we don’t have to climb as we get older. We are both 75 this year.
We really enjoy our window into your world, we did Ireland for three weeks in 22 and Scotland for 2 1/2 months in early 23 and fell more in love with it than ever. You are a very fortunate, blessed young man and your content speaks to our hearts even at our age. God bless whatever or wherever you go!

I’ve thought about skipping putting up a tree twice. Once, when a loved one passed suddenly and then again last year when I was having major repairs done to my home. Both times I ended up putting up my tree and was so glad I did. It provided peace and comfort each time I walked into my home. When I do my full tree, it takes me 3 hours just to decorate it. I’ve been collecting ornaments since I was a small child and others were gifts, so I have many, many memories that hang on my tree. Last year, due to repairs, I couldn’t do ornaments; so I just filled my tree with lights, faux hydrangeas that I had and clip on candles that lit via batteries. It wasn’t “my” tree, but it was still beautiful and festive. I also put up a little simple decor, here and there.
This year, I’ll be back in full holiday swing and will be starting to decorate shortly; which typically takes me a week (since I also work full time). I admit, it’s a lot of work and exhausting, asking myself why I go all out. My answer is because when all is said and done it’s worth the feeling I get when I’m home . It’s just me, but I’m worth it and I deserve the same festive and cozy experiences/feels as those who share their homes with others. I do usually have a small gathering of family or friends, but it’s mostly just me sitting by the tree in the evening and enjoying its ambience.

Hi Nic, you may absolutely skip the tree. I am skipping mine this year. I bought beautiful lighted branches which I am putting in my fireplace along with flameless candles and several faux wrapped gift boxes. I want to share your concerns about Sophie. I have 2 shih tzu babies, 12 years old, brother and sister. I took them for their yearly checkup and the vet reminded me they are considered "elderly" dogs. But like precious Sophie, they are healthy and full of life! They are such lovely companions.❤️

Oh my goodness... your morning walk with Sophie was so sweet. She is so precious, I am sure it makes you sad to see her age. But what a beautiful life she has with you now. That's what counts. Yes.... to a tree. I think you just need to downsize. Maybe a tabletop one in a gorgeous terra cotta pot in a woodland , natural theme. Or a small one on the hearth in an urn. Just the visual of a tree is whats important, not the size. Plus a smaller tree is less cost to decorate, as you can use your gold ornaments as a base, and just fill in with a few new baubles. PLus you can get pine cones and branches to spray gold for practically nothing. The view out the back arched door at Gray Walls look like a painting... stunning!

I'm not able to decorate a tree this year due to scheduled surgery but I have touches of winter around me, pine cones in a basket, smoke & pine scented candles, pine cone topiaries spilling with moss. I've collected fall leaves, bark and lichen/moss that I will use for Thanksgiving and for Christmas I will spray the leaves gold and dip some of the pine cones in glitter.

My Bichon, Seán, is 11-years-old too. It is sad to see them get old, but 11 isn't super old for these little dogs. Sophie looks like she's doing well! I'm all for skipping the Christmas tree and instead putting up a wreath and other decorations. Traditions are great but there's good in taking a break from them when the joy has gone out of it and you're feeling a bit fatigued when you think of doing it. You can always go back to it next year if you want to. I HAVE skipped it before. 😊

Almost every year I think that I won’t bother with a tree. And then I put it up and so enjoy sitting by it, lit or not, day or night, reading or listening to a podcast etc, and I am always grateful I go ahead with it. I take it down on the last day of Christmas and it always feels a little bittersweet. So do it, you’ll be glad in the end.

Yes, I have skipped my tree for the last 4 years. I had 3 in my house, but am now in a condo. I used a wreath on my mirrors in living room, dining room, and entrance hall. Of course I had one on my front door, I discovered that I really had to make my mantel stunning since there was no tree. It is different to not have a tree, but is doable. Happy Decorating!!!!

Loved the Christmas store tour! For the times we've not had a Christmas tree, we make a Christmas table scape - large wreath in the center, lots of candles, ornaments, holly around the wreath so it becomes textural. The idea is abundance on the table top but still room for dinner services. -- Love your new hair highlights! Was missing them! Thanks for the visit! xoxo

An informative video. There are times I have skipped the larger tree and put out my smaller one. More like a table tree. It brings out the festive mood without having to deal with a vast amount of preparations. The Holidays are one of my favorite times of year. I love that you care so much for Sophie. Never stop being that kind and generous person.❤

I wonder if Edinburgh has lovely thrift shops that sell Christmas decor? That could be interesting, inspiring and economical.

I'm glad to see😘🥰😇 Sophie again, she's adorable, a very sweet and intelligent dog. I was surprised that you have a lot of time with her. 11 years old. Take good care of her and she's grown up, Sophie.

Last Christmas we put our tree back in the den instead of in the formal living room and enjoyed it so much! I plan to do that again this year. Fun to make plans. I have ordered new lights. You will enjoy your tree so much!

You’re a good dog dad. Enjoy every moment you have with Sophie. Like people, it doesn’t matter the age or limitations, they need love and still have lots of love to give back. Never apologize for a pet’s limitations or illness.

I've skipped trees when I've had a house up for sale, but, other than that, I do a tree every year. But, if it's causing you stress, don't do it.
The store with all of the ornaments was nice!

I skip the tree to do what you are suggesting… garland at the fireplace and wreaths here and there inside as well as the front door. You can put a strand of lights on a large plant I side too!

Once again another lovely pre Christmas video. You are very right, we all missed lovely Sophie. There is certainly nothing odd with having a push chair for Sophie. You are both enjoying your life together. Thank you for sharing your life. You inspire us all to make life better.

Nicolas, for the past few years, I've skipped having the requisite tree in my apartment - and I've been so much happier with the results of holiday decorating in different, subtler ways. A fresh garland easily brings the gorgeous greenery and scent of the outdoors inside, without having a massive, monolithic extra presence in the room; and a few well-chosen metallic, jeweled, handcrafted accent decorations & ornaments seem all the more special (and liveable) when carefully placed on their own, around & about the room - rather than massed together, clustered in one spot, fighting for attention. In this way, my Christmas decorations easily blend into celebrating the New Year as well, without screaming only one holiday. And whilst I understand that some people would never feel right giving up their tree, or changing the traditions their families always had, I've found that it's a simpler elegance that actually makes me feel more at ease and in my own home, and that I prefer that method of celebration in the midst of all the visual holiday hubbub and noise around my small haven - where it's still there for me to enjoy, just in the outside world.

Nicolas, I think the little teapot ornament would be perfect to add to your collection ...even if it's on just a little tree in the kitchen! Love touring with you and Sophie, it's all quite lovely! Thank-You for sharing, your videos break up my day nicely! Always look forward to what you will be sharing next! Have a Beautiful Evening!

The glass decorations on my tree once were my grandmothers, then my parents and now mine. Would never think of changing them to match the decor of the room, be “modern” or follow theme trends. Everyone is different of course, but for me Christmas is all about tradition. Having said that, my house will never be without a tree to welcome the season, remember memories of the past and look to the exciting new year ahead.

It was so sweet that you opened with Sophie. My dog Gucci just past two weeks ago and I’m having such a difficult time. Like you she was with me constantly. She even came to work with me and had her pink bed there. Then 2 years ago my husband started with dementia and she was my one and only companion and kept me going. She was 13 and I’m just having such a hard time. Seeing your Sophie was so sweet. I know you enjoy her every minute and she’s very lucky to have you also. ❤

I think it’s great you take Sophie in her push cart….such a caring owner and that is a beautiful thing to witness. There is nothing better than the architecture, warmth and history of the marvellous places you venture too. Have a wonderful week….🥂😊

I’ve skipped a Christmas tree a few time and did the “trimmings” instead. It still looks beautiful and festive. I was also thankful when I didn’t have to take it down and stuff it back into its bag. Anyhow, go with how you’re feeling when the time comes.

Nicholas!! This was so lovely!! Sofie is so sweet and she does so well for her age. Greywalls is beyond beautiful. The light this time of year is one of my favorites. I live in Maine and although Scotland is about 600 miles due North of us our light is lovely too. It took my breath away to see yours. Thank you so much and see you soon. Oh, and we have scones often and love them just the way you do with Earl Grey as well jannieo

Beautiful ornaments! So this is my thought...if you are feeling to skip a tree this year, there is a reason you are feeling it. Skip the tree this year. Put up what you feel you desire to put up. Why? You will feel so fulfilled and comfortable and happy that you went with what you are feeling at this moment. Yes, I skipped a tree one year and it was for other reasons in my life, but I did. It was right for me and the Christmas turned out just as I wanted it. I did it that one year, but that was my turn. I LOVE Christmas soooo much as it is my favorite time of the year. And it makes me feel close to my wonderful gorgeous sweet late Mother. She did so much for Christmas every year. I am putting up my trees every year, but I am feeling to do it. So Nicolas, skip your tree. You will feel fulfilled if that is what you continue to feel from now until Christmas time this year. Blessings!!

Hello! So glad to see Sophie looking chipper. It endearing to hear the way you speak fondly of her, a worthy dog owner you are. I really like seeing the variety of holiday tree decor in the store where you are, so different from ours. I'll admit it makes me envious. Gold ornaments are always a great choice as they coordinate nicely with every other color and EVERYTHING! I so wanted one of those butterflies. As for your invitation for feedback: tree vs no tree..I suggest doing your whole house (minus the tree) as Stage 1 of decorating. Live with it for a week of two, then if you really miss it, add the tree as Stage 2. Doing in two parts may be less overwhelming and give you the chance to experience both. You can skip a tree, there is no crime in that. I never have but may just a small one this year. I understand the difficulty in carrying in a large heavy tree. I want to see my ornament collection though, so I was thinking of doing a vertical wall hanging of ornaments - ornaments tied to the end of nice ribbons hung from ceiling down the wall in vertical stripes. Or maybe tied and draped in swags from one corner of the room across the wall to the other. Challenge yourself and channel in ultimate designer inside you to come up with something that excites you and make this Christmas stand out from all the one before it - a treat for your creative spirit and something new for your longtime viewers.
