      Well actually they broke OFF a piece of his jaw, so it was actually a whole lot more gruesome. I really want to do a video on the topic but I have NO clue on how to do the visual part of that story...

    Louis XIV was such a great king, bringing together the territories that would become modern France, and treating his subjects with compassion and generosity.

      At the end of his life, he wasn't loved by his people anymore either. Still many of his accomplishments make him one of the greatest kings ever. Thank you both for watching !

    Another very good summary! So I take it that the Spanish Netherlands territory that France took over is now Belgium. I will have to read up on that. When Louis took away the rights of the Huguenots, did they go Germany or Holland? A little research is again required on my part. Charles II's mother was Louis' aunt, I believe. Very smart to have the new King of England in your debt. France's relationship with Papal authority seems to have always been a toss up. The politics of the two entities hasn't always coincided like during the times of the antipopes years before. Yet Cardinals like Richelieu and Mazarin made strengthening the central power of France their goal. It's an interesting contradiction. The Rise of Versailles is a very fascinating piece of history. Lady Montespan lost her hold on the King when La Voisin was brought down. I am amazed how prevalent the practice of magic was in royal courts all over the world! I didn't realize Louis had all those health problems. He had ailments that didn't take his life, but they sure made his life miserable1 I've had surgery on my molars. It left me with a very vivid memory, yet I didn't have my jaw broken. That poor man!

    • @TheKingsofFrance
      @TheKingsofFrance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh it was worse than having his jaw broken. A piece of his jaw literally broke off, leaving him with a hole in his mouth. When he'd eat, the food would shoot out of his nose ... Eventually they closed the hole by pouring molten iron in his mouth. Can you imagine ? The court had to leave Versailles on the day the procedure was done so the king could cry and scream without shame... Maybe I'll do a video on that procedure some day, as it's a very curious episode in French history for sure ! Glad you were here again Barbara, hope you are well !

    Louis XIV actually protected Mme de Montespan. He stopped his relationship with her, but spared a trial, and she could remain free.

      Yeah they were plentiful and the 'physicians' at the time hardly had a clue what they were doing. I'm considering on making a compilation some time about bad physicians at Versailles, and the stuff that went wrong.

    I do not see how anyone who is a serious student of history could ever consider this king a great king ?
    He bankrupted his country and he almost lost his throne ,during the War of the Spanish Succession .
    People seem to forget that Prince Eugene of Savoy , and John Churchill , Duke of Marlborough kicked Louis' ass and almost swept this king from his throne after the Battle of Ramillies.

      @@TheKingsofFrance If you ask me 72 years on a throne does NOT make you great . William of Orange was a far better King .
      Here you got a guy , who never wanted to be a King Of England. But when he died in 1702 , King William left England the most prosperous country in Europe , and he set the table for empire. Not only that he singlehandedly modernized the monarchy . He was one of the greatest Diplomatist Kings in History .
      No , he was not glamorous , no he didn't have the most personable nature ,but he was 1000 times more effective , and set the table for the British Monarchy for centuries to come . And he did it an enlightened way .
