In the first segment of my lecture on the Wars of Louis XIV, I discuss Louis' motivations for going to war and give a brief overview of the War of Devolution, the Franco-Dutch War, and the Nine Years' War (with the most attention given to the Franco-Dutch War).
In the next segment, I will discuss the War of the Spanish Succession, with emphasis on its causes and consequences.

Louis The XIV, The Sun King is my absolute favorite royal / historical figure that's ever been. He was near to Superhuman, quite rightly so considering he was truly a gift from mnmmm.
the glorious revolution was actually a dutch invasion of england but was so fast and the propaganda used basically ensured it was never actually seen as that. (I study french history at Alevel.) in french history we refer to william as william of orange to keep one name for him. if you visit this topic again could you go over the treaties made?
That connection to english history I never made. I love watching your videos they help go over parts of european history I didn't have a grasp on.

Louis's stated goal was to push the French border to the Rhine river in order to gain defensible borders. Once he gained his borders, he had Vauban fortify them. It was these forts that saved him during the disastrous first years of the War of the Spanish Succession. Some have argued that these borders and forts saved his crown.
Personal glory and national glory were largely the same thing at the time, it was Louis himself who said "L'etat c'est moi" or "I am the state"
Johan de Witt was lynched. Largely for his complete failure to prepare the Dutch Republic from the French and for antagonizing Louis. Keep in mind that from the 80 years war (Dutch revolt against Spain that merged into 30 years war) the french supported and fought with the dutch against the Hapsburgs. Louis felt betrayed by the dutch supporting the spanish in the war of devolution.
Austria was a duchy of the Holy Roman Empire. It would not be though of as apart from a German Empire until he Seven Weeks war in 1866.
Great Britain is anachronistic during the grand alliance. The United Kingdom isnt founded until the acts of union in 1707, during the War of Spanish Succession.

The 9 years war was not a disaster for Louis. At least on land, where he dominated his enemies. The peace treaty was mostly in favour of France. The colonies were also were defended, notably in N America

The glorious revolution is often thaught in the Netherlands as an invasion of England by the Dutch. When the invitation came preperations were already on the way. The Dutch needed to secure the alliance with England or they could be speaking French soon. So it was kind of 'defensive'. The British gained massively from the event because they got to copy Dutch financial institutions. Banking and stock markets etc. (also gin)
Benjamin Disraeli described it as "the invasion of England by Dutch finance".

+Sniff The Monkeys At some point, I'm sure that I will - my videos are doing really well in Sweden - but it would take me delving into something that I'm not too familiar with because it doesn't really show up in our European History survey courses. Over the past few decades, our courses have become more inclusive of Eastern Europe but not so much of Scandinavia.
+Tom Richey yeah im a big fan of your videos since i found your Thirty Years War video, and ofcourse your southern accent. Anyways im sure you will do great if you decide on making a video of Sweden, its a shame because like you said most people leave out Scandinavian history besides from Vikings mostly, i might be a bit biased but the Swedish Empire is surely impressive seeing as its only surrounded by other huge and powerful countries and could still hold its ground. Besides all of that, Sweden has had a significant amount of political and military influence on Europe throughout most of history atleast until their loss of Finland in 1809. Louis the killer. Killing and plundering his neighbours. That is an important reason why the Germans hated the French for a long time, even beginning an Imperial war against France. French farmers were starving to death because of the taxes. Everything for the power and the glory of this selfish man. When he died, even the French hated him for his deeds. Great? as the leader of by far the strongest country of Europe het could not defeat his enemies. Good for the dustbin of history.
+Bram Holland Well he actually defeated them. War of Devolution was victory for France and they gained territory from Spain. In Franco - Dutch Wars French defeated large coalition of enemies consisting of Holy Roman Empire , Spain , Netherlands , Brandenbug - Prussia , Denmark. Dutch were able to survive yes , however Louis goals changed in 1675 and were no longer the same as when they were facing dutch alone. France was fighting coalition now and successfully. In the end France gained large territory Franche - Comte , cities in Spanish Netherlands , Freiburg from Holy Roman Empire , occupied Lorraine and became most powerful country in Europe. Historians agree that Treaty of Nijmegen which ended the war was victory for France and it influence rose to absolute height. Than Louis won War of Reunions in 1684 . In Nine Years War , Louis fought off larger European coalition than previously and you can say in such conditions it was pyrrhic victory for France. They were able to retain and gain permanently Lower Alsace and Strasbourg , which was given to them by previous treaty only for 20 years. But now it remained forever in possession of France. War of Spanish Succession was bad though for Louis , however he still managed to put Bourbon on throne and make Spain an ally. Out of 5 wars , 4 wars Louis won and one of those victories was pyrrhic one in Nine Years War.

The more I read and hear of this period, the more I admire the Dutch! The largely outnumbered and underrated power of the north east, the Protestant Sparta, that turned round the disaster of 1672, to become brilliant with William III of Orange, a genius whose grand alliance contained French power and frustrated Louis on every turn!

+TomRichey I made some researches and I found out that Franche-Comté was gained by Louis XIV only after the Dutch War with the treaty of Nimègue in 1678... Can you confirm that?
+Romain Guiraudou Louis gained some of Franche-Comté after the War of Devolution but gave most of it back in the treaty that followed that war. As you noted, he gained the rest in the Treaty of Nijmegen following the Franco-Dutch War.

Because he was our most important Admiraal (commander) at sea. In the war of 1672 he defeated a combined English / French fleet and stopped an invasion of the Netherlands (Dutch republic). In the years before that during the Anglo Dutch wars he defeated the English at the 4 days battle in 1666 and captured the Royal Prince (flagship). But his most famous victory was the raid on Chatham in1667 in which more than thirty English ships were destroyed and the dockyards were attacked and the flagship the Royal Charles was captured. The stern piece of which is still to see at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He won far more battles then Nelson and was a commander for 23 years. He died at the battle of Augusta (Sicilly)

The Dutch could not survive as a nation as proven in the disaster year, if the English king remained a Roman Catholic alley of France. After a smart intelligence operation of many years William III had himself invited to England by the Immortal Seven. Despite that invitation and to assure the success of the "invited" Dutch invasion, he invaded with 460 ships and 40,000 man, twice the size of the Spanish armada 100 years earlier. To make the resulting Dutch/English alliance against France stronger, William modernized English government using some Dutch ideas for example in financing government and the military. William also had experience with a strong parliament, so he was not afraid to negotiate the Bill of Rights.
The short and medium term advantages of the alliance were for the Dutch, since the English troops in Belgium helped the Dutch to survive Louis XIV. After these wars for survival the Dutch Republic was bankrupt and declined.The long term advantages were for the UK, since William's modernization, democratization and the introduction of the United Kingdom, by William's successor Anne 5 years later, did set the UK on the road to its huge empire.

In american this exam is optional, that's why alot of Americans don't know European countries or histories however your cognizance doesn't make sense as a lot of Americans do take this exam and know about European history from high school or university if they want to get a history defree

+Lillian Sunshine He was a war hero. In many nations, war heroes fight land battles, but for the Dutch, de Ruyter is the military hero par excellence because of his naval exploits in the Anglo-Dutch and Franco-Dutch Wars.
Without him Louis would probably be able to conquer the Netherlands, because of the English naval blockade. He revolutionized naval strategies. his greatest feat was the raid on Medway in 1667 when he sailed up the Thames and destroyed the English fleet. When he died fighting the French they even gave him honourable military salutes and let the ship carrying his body go to the Netherlands unopposed.
I think you could say that Michiel de Ruyter is at least as important for the Netherlands as Lord Nelson was for England in the later naval wars. May I point out that during the Siege of Maastricht one of the most important military leaders, the famous musketeer d'Artagna,n got killed by a musket bullet.
