  • Hello everybody! Today's video is all about craft chairs and the research on our life in chairs. I talk about the structure and functions of the spine and go over some types of chairs and who should or shouldn't use them. I also debunk some myths about correct seated posture based on scientific studies. Then I discuss some specific suggestions for craft chairs before leaving you with some tips about being more healthy about sitting.
(I had a lot of notes behind the camera to help me remember all of the chair specs!)
What kinds of craft chairs do you use? Do you like them? Or are you in the market for new craft seating? What are you looking for? Leave your answers to these questions along with your comments and questions for me in the comment section below. Thanks for watching!

My husband bought an Autonomous Ergo Pro when everybody was working from home during that whole debacle, as he was now spending over 8 hours a day in his professional work as a video specialist and graphic designer. I, too, began spending more time at my computer and my old $50 Office Depot chair was causing leg pain and swelling in my feet. I resisted spending so much on a chair, but finally the pain was too much. I tried his chair for a few days and was astonished at the difference! It just so happened that Autonomous had just released a new color for the Ergo Pro: Evergreen -- which, despite its name, is actually more of a spring green. A happy, bright, spring green! I ordered it, and have been utterly thrilled with it ever since. It has all the adjustability I want, with the firmness that supports without being too hard or too squishy. And the COLOR! 😃 Just seeing it makes me happy. Not only is it great for sitting at my computer, it's the only chair I use for long hours of knitting. The arms adjust up and down, so I can rest my elbows or have them free. If I were to get another one for my sewing table, I could leave off the arms altogether. Highly, highly recommended if you have the budget for it. (And ergonomic testing has shown it to be better than the Aeron, at a fraction of the cost.)
For those who don't have the budget for an Autonomous chair (or want a lighter-weight chair -- the Autonomous Ergo Pro is quite heavy, so less maneuverable), I can recommend the Sihoo chair I found out about from Sookie Sews in her video "10 Tips for an Efficient Sewing Room." Lucky for me I snagged it on a Lightning Deal on Amazon for $59.99 (regular price $139.99), and it's a great craft chair! The "coat hanger" on the back makes a fantastic handle to move the chair around/out of the way when needed.

Thank you, Kristine! I have been trying to find new living room furniture but have been so frustrated by sofas and chairs that you sink into instead of sitting on. I better understand what I am looking for - I want to knit or read comfortably and it my feet on the floor and my back and hips comfortably supported. . And now I know about cushion density, because I want firmness and for it to last! As always, you are thorough and so fun to watch. Thank you.

When I worked for state government they let me try out about 50 ergonomic chairs they had in the basement that they could purchase for people. My favorite by far was the Steelcase Leap. You can find their chairs at office supply shops (or search the Steelcase website for showrooms) and some will have floor models you can sit in to try out. If you're going to spend more than $100 or so on a chair I highly recommend you sit in it before you buy, and if possible, buy from a vendor that lets you return or exchange the chair within 30 days. But a good chair is definitely worth the money, you don't know what you're missing until you find a really good one!

    Hi Kristine,
I just wanted to let you know that after watching your episode on craft chairs I got the Boss Deluxe Posture Chair, and it's made a huge difference. I spend so much of the day at the desk/table and back pains started last year. I didn't know that the chair I was using was contributing so much to the pain/causing the pain. Thank you for doing this research for us, and also, I really enjoy your podcast. : )

I always get excited when I see there's a new vid from you! This was very informative. I would love a craft chair as my body has not been comfortable in any chair for years. Because of one leg shorter & hip set up from surgeries since I was 2 (born without hip sockets) it is torture in restaurants, doc/dentist offices, air port chairs are the worst, friends house chairs, etc. et. Couches are too deep etc. I knit/crochet on our couch & craft at the din rm table. I really need to look into something. A few of those chairs you mentioned at $50 seem pretty doable for my budget so thank you so much for this. As always another exceptional vid & thanx for sharing your time, talent & knowledge :D

As a short woman, I have always had trouble finding chairs and sofas that fit my body correctly. I like for my feet to be flat on the floor but then my back wasn't against the back cushion at all. I'm going to look into the stool you mentioned because the seat depth was much shorter than most others. Thank you for your investigation of this topic.

Great to seeing you again! I sit in a chair from a 1960s conference set that was in the a much loved elder colleague's university research unit where we worked. When the unit was moved to a modern building with a new conference table in the 2010s, nobody else in the unit wanted to keep the table or the chairs, so we asked if we could to keep just one. (The rest went to the university surplus store.) Now it's my office desk chair. It's a barrellchair on an office chair type of pedestal (not modifiable) in day glow orange, with a brown tweed cushion that's attached to the seat and turned into a sliver of compressed batting probably in the 1980s. We love it because of where it came from and who it came from. I have a seat cushion on top of the tweedy cushion and I find it comfortable. And now I know it's okay if I lean back a bit. When I knit at my desk I tend to sit back and relax. The barrel part is only about as high as my mid-back. I've been trying to remember to sit straight up while knitting, so it's a super big relief to know it's okay to sit back. Love your videos! They're always so informative. When we move back to Illinois in the summer of 2020 (getting too old to live so far from the family), I think we may restore the chair to it's position as an extra chair in the living room or a extra chair in the office, and I'll get an office chair. I feel like I could use something with a higher back and I'd like to have somebody who knows from naugahyde upholstry make us another seat cushion in a similar fabric to the original but with some foam in it. Thanks for all the research!!! And great to see one of your videos again!

The most comfortable knitting seating I've found is actually my bed. I have tons of extra pillows so I can build support where I need it, under my knees, in my lumbar, and even my cervical spine. My set up usually looks a lot like an oversized version of the bed chair pillows from the 90s. However I have found a stationary padded swivel chair to be my best friend while knitting. It reclines, and has a foot stool if you want to use it (I just use the foot stool to hold my project bag or notions or pattern usually). I found mind off a garage sale page on Facebook as an additional seating option for my home office. But since I stopped working from home it's become my favorite chair. After nearly 10 yrs I'm not looking to replace it with something similar but that isnt a faux leather finish and has slightly higher arms. I have found that with lower arm rests I tend to twist or lean to find the arm rest which causes all sorts of back and shoulder problems. The chair I have is small enough to fit in almost any room and is light enough to move...but not having wheels sometimes makes it tricky. I often wonder if a winged back chair would be a better option.

Kris, we bought a Broyhill sofa with the sturdiest cushions I could find. It is holding up well. That's where I knit. I have bought several chairs for my sewing table. Just a thick padded seat and no arms on the chair seem to work best for me. As long as it twists and rolls . I don't lean back much so the expense for an ergonomical chair was a waste. Remember the little sewing rocking chairs our Grandmother's used? They are the best for knitting. No arms and they were low to the floor so you could have feet flat on the floor or stretch them out a bit. I have a couple of those , too. Changing it up seems to work . Great video, Cheryl

This episode reminded me of some information that I just read about in Carson Demers book about ergonomic knitting. Good information and very timely. I have been having troubles with my back and have found my glider rocking chair with very low arm rests and my firm Amish made sofa the most comfortable places to knit. My recliner is NOT comfortable and I think it just doesn’t have the lumbar support I need. I stand/ walk all day at work 4 days a week (hair stylist) and when I get home all I want to do is sit and knit! I had used a saddle chair at work before and after knee replacement surgery and it was helpful . Very awkward getting on and off the thing gracefully! I now have it in my craft room and use it occasionally when I’m sewing or winding loads of yarn .

This is one of the most useful crafting videos I have seen. I have just had a new studio built in my garden and am in the process of looking for a suitable - i.e. most comfortable - chair for crafting. I have searched on both Amazon and Ebay and the choice is bewildering. This video has given me some important pointers. I was just about to purchase an expensive - and unsuitable - chair. Thank you for sharing such an important video. Back to the drawing board!

Very well done! Thanks for taking the time and sharing. I have a chair similar to the first one you shown for sewing and a stool at my craft table, but I still find my back is fatigued after working on either one for awhile, then for knitting that's done in an over sized chair. Like you said, remembering to take more breaks is the key. While watching TV I try to get up whenever it commercials and walk around during that time or do quick chores.

Thank you so much. My quilting room has carpet, so, I use a regular chair. I have a high table and a waist length table...both of standing/cutting fabrics. My sewing machines are on lower tables. I find that I am usually jumping up and down when sewing...to press seams. However, when knitting/crocheting, I set a timer..45 min working...15 min of walking around, getting coffee or playing with my cat. I’ve also seen some discussion (minimal) about ergonomics for yarn spinners, but none of them were ever as scientific as you. Oh! Thanks for the info on ergonomics. I worked as a lawyer for 35 years-they had to turn off the automatic lights in my office because I would sit and do tax research, and the lights would turn off! That is a good indication you need to get up and more. More important than moving, however, is I carried stress in my neck and shoulders. This made sitting for long periods really uncomfortable. Thankfully, I don't have these problems now that I am retired. I try and get 30 minutes of cardio a day, and try not to sit down until 5:00 in the afternoon. Then I have a glass of wine, and knit. Unfortunately, if that goes to two glasses, the knitting doesn't get done. I have a recliner, with pretty good support, and I use a pillow for extra lumbar support. My legs are either bent or straight out. Then I was diagnosed with knee issues, from keeping my knees bent for hours on end. So now I change my seating position periodically, and do PT, and it really helps. Interestingly, walking or running maked my knees feel better. How is that for an indication we are not made to sit!

I've been considering a new crafting chair for at least the last 2 years, so I was interested in seeing your podcast today. Have you heard of "the Heavenly Chair"? I've got multiple back issues, so I need to choose carefully. They aren't cheap. Around $500.00-$600.00. But they're pretty much custom made, ergonomic chairs. There aren't any sewing stores in Wisconsin that carry them, but the closest one to me is in Minnesota. I would be interested to hear your assessment of these if there's a sewing store that carries them.

You didn't mention the Horn craft chair which is an ergonomic chair which has height. back but also forward adjustment to tip you forward so that your back remains in contact with the lumbar support. is this a good feature? I have spent a whole day feeling dizzy after sewing for four hours sewing. I was lost in the moment and apart from getting up and down to press, i sat on the edge of my chair. I spent 30 years in office work and have all the health issues you warn about. permanent back pain. High blood sugars, high blood pressure. I think this information is vital to us all whether crafters or not. Now there are so many working on computers I can only see the problem getting worse. Employers definitely need to be persuaded to let staff move around more. Thankyou for a comprehensive report on the art of sitting.

When I was at sea we had an officer who liked knitting, she had to stand her watches and that really means standing, wandering between looking out of the window, checking the radar, plotting the position on the chart etc. Standing still for long periods is not a good idea. She made herself a small bag that hung round her neck so she could knit whilst walking about and (apparently) that worked out rather well for her. There is very little furniture on a ships bridge however, hazards such as toys on the floor, coffee tables etc are not an issue whereas they might be at home.

Very interesting, thank you for this Kristine. $2,000+ for a knitting chair - well maybe next week if I win a lottery! LOL Not going to happen. I either sit on my sofa - reclining chairs, or in my rocking chair - depends if the grand children are around they love the rocker. Thank you for doing all this research it is important for all us crafters to remember to look after ourselves as well as we do our crafting supplies. xxJane

I've added the chairs you suggested which are available from Amazon.com to my Amazon wish list. Are there office supply stores in Galesburg which would have ergonomic office chairs? What about the Target or Walmart in Galesburg? (There's a Serta office chair I've seen at my local Walmart for $99.99 which is rated for up to at least 270 lbs. weight capacity and seems ergonomic, so I've saved that to my Walmart wish list.) The $50 specials in the office chairs you suggested on Amazon all seem to have 250 lb. weight capacity; however, the Best Office Midback chair had a customer review from a 300 lb. individual who found it quite comfortable, so that sounds like a definite possibility.
As for living room-type chairs, it sounds like I should look for mid-century style with firm cushioning (NOT a recliner, probably . . . sigh), and use a timer to remind me to get up and move around every so often.
So, I took notes while listening, and saved things to my Amazon wish list. Now I just have to wait until my daughter moves out to start shopping!

I have a favorite recliner in the living room that I've crocheted in, but not recently, since it got moved to a corner of the living room away from an electrical outlet, so I can't have my "Ottlite clone" table lamp on an end table next to me. I mostly sit at my home computer while crocheting, except when I'm nearly done with a large afghan, when I switch to a futon couch in the living room, so the afghan can be mostly on the couch. I will be converting my daughter's (the Monmouth College graduate's) bedroom into a craft room once she gets a job as a librarian and moves out, so I'm very interested in finding a comfortable chair or two for that room.

I worked at an insurance company paying medical and dental claims. We were on production so getting up was not good for production. I worked there for 15 years. I had to work 12 hours a day and six days a week. I was a single mother of four children. I sent them all through college on my salary alone. I also did sewing at night and the only day I had off in the week to make ends meet. I am now retired and have back and hip problems!

I detest kneeling chairs. One of my friends has one and I sat on it for a while. My knees and the fronts of my legs hurt so badly afterwards and I wasn't sat on it for long.

I couldn't see myself sitting much in any of the crafting chairs you showed other than the couch or recliner. I'm inclined to buy a gaming chair since they're made for ppl who sit for long periods of time.

All of the stools seem very uncomfortable. I hate sitting high up off the ground, it unnerves me

Hi Kristine. Always great to get a new video from you. Will watch your video again more thoroughly, but wanted to let you know that Roxanne Richardson talks about a stool she bought in her recent video: th-cam.com/video/sS_IcwZrZbU/w-d-xo.html
She is an avid knitter/spinner etc. Just like a good prof., your videos are always so thoroughly researched.

So reclining is important, but you don’t show a single chair that reclines.
I am a fisherman and am trying to design a chair that reclines and allows you to have your knees above your hips, thus closing the hip leg angle. This reduces edema

With exception of the last chair.

No mention of sitting with knees above your hips or in a cardiac position. A bit disappointing.

Personally tho I think picnic benches and folding chairs work well too.
