  • Fabrication of a power lift for a Precision Matthews PM-727 milling machine. This was built for a friend and modeled after one I built for my own mill.

He did a great job , but I did the same thing using a Milwaukee right angle drill 300 to 1200 rpm , only using 300 rpm mode , other is to fast
and it works very well !!!

I would think that a Nema 42 stepper motor could be bolted right on the shaft with no need for gear reduction and work great also. You could get a lot more speed going with that. I made a controller for my Grizzly mill that added power lift with memory, and auto return, as well as a bunch of other features. It would work on your 727 also. Let me know if you might be interested.

Hi folks. It may help to know that the torque output of that motor is around 5 lbs ft at max rpm. You can measure the torque you need with a spring balance on the handle and multipling the reading in lbs required to turn the handle by the handle to axis centre distance - in feet for lbs-ft or inches for lbs-inch. On line calculators will tell you if your proposed motor is up to it. You can convert rated HP at a given output rpm to torque for example, which is what I did. BobUK.

my guess is the motors are for an electric wheelchair
nice idea , might make the mounting plate so i can bolt it straight to the side of the mast and make a new shaft to replace the one holding the handle

Hello 👋 friend. Hopefully I'll get a reply from you 🙂. This video was a 4yr video. The added power lift function is nice and simple, I'm sure it's been very helpful to move the Z Axis. May I ask, how much did this mill costed??

Thanks Lee, I have a PM 727V on order delivery about Christmas they say. This will probably be one of the first mods so I'll be hoarding bits for the next few months. Thanks for the video.
How do you find the machine in general and are you pleased with it. Any shortcomings you've noticed. Thanks from Canada's banana belt.🤞🇨🇦👍

The motor and gearbox, look like the ones fitted here in England to electric wheelchairs.

I really must work out something for my small mill - yours on that machine is just great.
Your friend is a lucky guy to have your input... super job Lee.
I quite forget whether you mention - where did you source the rubber bushings?

ChrisB257 Thanks Chris, the LoveJoy coupling came from McMaster Carr. I'll be glad to get you the part numbers if you'd like.

Hi Mr. Pragmatic ! Like yourself I am pragmatic as well. Would a 1/2" drill or impact type hand power tool work for this application? Keep up the good work!

Hi. I understand that this PM 727M machine has a 1 horse motor. Has this ever caused you any problems. I am looking to purchase one. Great video. Thanks

dale jones I've never had any issues at all with the power of the motor. Of course any bench top mill is going to have limitations on what it can do, but it doesn't take long to learn its capabilities. Thanks for stopping by.

Great video, thanks for posting! Could you tell me for the PM727, what's a decent sized bench depth to put this on? I'm pretty limited on space but I think my bench is ~26".

    • @MrPragmaticLee
      @MrPragmaticLee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

ficklecycler The pan that comes with a 727 is 26”, of course the handle hang off the front. It would probably work fine on 22”.
