Just had to check that it had been said. It has. Our job is done! Also, do y'all also want desperately to teach Rachel to spin? I really want to teach Rachel to spin. Rachel, if you're EVER in South Texas, HIT ME UP!
The spiral lacing in the video game dress is historically accurate chef's kiss and I'm here for it. Made me weirdly happy to see cause everyone just cross laces everything usually.
Those are small drop spindles. If you ever want to try them out for actual spinning you can make ones that look almost exactly like the ones from the character with doweling and those little wood donut discs from the craft store. They're super cheap too and spinning is a lot of fun. Also love that the character featured spiral lacing. Made me so happy.
I was just about to comment that they were drop spindles. I was showed how to use one at a 19th century weekend at a historic site; about a year later, one of my sisters bought a couple.
You might think this week's video is less interesting but this is exactly the content I subscribed for! You found this tiny detail in an obscure video game and made it REAL! And not just as cosplay but as an every day, completely wearable piece. That is cool beyond description and I find it incredibly inspiring. ❤
Rachel, the fact that you're not sewing like a "professional" is frankly the reason you're my absolute favorite sewing TH-camr! Most other people who do this are intimidating and present themselves as if they know exactly what they're doing all the time, and as someone who is literally Frankensteining her own pattern as we speak because I don't have access to a printer to print out a pattern, having someone on the Internet like you is incredibly comforting. Instead of a teacher, you feel more like the awesome next door neighbor who I would go and sew with and we'd make awesome cosplays but also make a whole lot of mistakes along the way and laugh at ourselves and learn together.
@@thequietinside3201 I recommend Prickly Alpaca of you don’t mind fantasy nonsense. She’s equally chaotic (or probably more actually) in her process of learning and experimenting and also definitely doesn’t claim to know what she’s doing.
Just want to let you know that professionals ALSO cobble together patterns-take the sleeves from that one, the collar from that one, the skirt from that one, the bodice from that one….if they don’t drape or draft their own patterns, they ARE cobbling patterns to get the look they want. And all sorts of professional clothing makers I have seen have a kind of chaos. But of course there are also those that are more organized/put together/lawful/etc….
Honestly, I'm jealous of your ability to kinda just wing it with sewing and your stuff looks amazing. I am a perfectionist about it too the point of not seeing at all cause of the stress, and fit is still a mystery to me. Keep up the gremlin vibes if it's what works for you cause it is legit inspirational!
i know you probably won’t see this but i just wanna say that throughout my many years of watching your videos i have always loved your chill making-practical-things videos just as much, if not more, as your fancy project videos. your videos have always been what i go to when i need a break from everything and the more simple project videos are always especially comforting to watch. iv always loved all the content you put out because we get to see you being such a funny and smart person so please don’t worry about making all your videos super complicated, we’ll love them all the same
The little spools/doodads/trinkets she has hanging from her waist are drop spindles, for spinning yarn from loose wool. I feel like you'd find it soothing to try. I always feel like a good little NPC when I use them at ren faire to make me look like I'm so authentic hahaha
I caught that detail too. As much as Rachel likes working with wool (her hand felted critters) I agree that she might enjoy learning drop spindle. Keep up the great work! Loving this channel.
Honestly, I was starting to miss those videos where you use that one paneled skirt pattern and make a cute top to go with it. Your style is cute and watching you build upon it by making stuff you want to wear never gets old.
I totally think you should add the leaf to an apron-like the one you made here! and it could be a giant pocket, or sew lines on it to create smaller pockets! It would be soo cute! like a little woodland creature's apron! Loved the video Rachel!!
I am your target audience. You are my sewing partner. This video will be on repeat for hours until I finish my cottagecore fantasy dream dress that will be now two piece because thats just much more logical. Thank you for your hard work, its appreciated and I love sewing with you.
I'm still watching but I just have to say, I thoroughly enjoy the more "mundane" or "boring" projects. These are the things I want to make and constantly wear, so I love seeing other people do theirs and see what catches their eyes 😅💖
As someone who wants to make all of her Sims4 outfits for herself in real life, I completely agree with this feeling 😂 I actually prefer watching a practical, “going to be worn many times” sewing video than the extravagant ones! It helps give me a new perspective to view my own wardrobe with
"Not exactly the dress we're looking for. Moving on!", she says and moves on to someone with the exact same dress, only in different colours 😆I loved the casual, rambly vibe in this video! One of these days I'll actually dare to try sewing something like that, I hope! Thanks for letting us be part of your chaos! 💜💚
girl, we literally follow you because we like the stuff that you want to make for you! don't need to apologise for it, it's the content we come here for! ❤
If you plant crocus bulbs in random places in your yard in the fall, they come up in the spring before you have to mow! I get SO HYPE when I see the cute little purple flowers randomly come up in my yard! It’s SO MUCH SEROTONIN 🥳
Instead of using a leather punch, you should switch to an awl! It’s easier to use and it makes for stronger grommets since the awl just pokes through the weave instead of cutting it. ALSO I think those doodads are drop spindles ❤
Confirm drop spindles. Dating them based upon the base and top hook would be funny. Anyone here watch enough Time Team to give a rough date on those drop spindles?
@@annekec4666 I studied archaeology at university (have a BA in Archaeological Practice) but it didn't cover spindles other than in passing. You'd need more than just Time Team to accurately date them lol. Especially given that certain styles of tools changed very little over the course of many hundreds or even thousands of years (depending on the tool). When something was found to work very well we tended to just keep using it (planned obsolescence is a relatively new thing). Though we do know that the game series is set "in 14th century Aquitaine, France during the Hundred Years' War" which lasted from 1337 to 1453. For it to be the 14th century part that means any time 1337 to 1399. Its therefore supposed to be a European style which rules out it being a drop spindle (that's a much later American style based on Andean weaving techniques, not on European ones) and the shape does suggest this. Its got a conical long bit and it creates a sort of () shape on the spindle (drop spindles create a stronger cone shape against a flat disc). But other than that? Stylistically how they looked is more to do with what fibre you were spinning with them as the shape affects spin speed (amongst other things). The styles themselves seem to have changed very little over the years. A quick google shows you can buy some now which look the same, and there are way older examples than mid 1300s which look almost the same too.
Definitely jousting swords for squirrels, ALTHOUGH boringly in the “real world” the do-dads around her waist are spindles for spinning wool. If you look up antique spindle you’ll see lots...LOTS of variations. 🙂🐿🌈❤️ A random thought that came out of nowhere - I kinda miss the old basement.
I'm jealous of the way Rachel gesticulates & moves with her skirts. the very natural skirt gab before she plants her fist on her hip to pose while she speaks at 25:43 is very artistic. she also generally works for the camera to make the fabric tangible in the way it swings and wrinkles. i wish i had a skirt like this to spin in.
Having a very stressful day with a bad headache rn. Dear Rachel, watching your joy from finding smth to create that brings you personally so much happiness is the best cure! Please don't you ever apologize for making this types of videos! This is exactly why we love you and what we are here for. Thank you so much!
Making them separates is actually way more historically accurate as well! Post medieval times it was actually quite rare of every day clothes to be one piece dresses as it was impractical for working women to put them on by themselves. I think that top was too cute by itself to get rid of that peplum!
I think always making extravagant items for videos is fine in moderation. Most of us, I think anyways, love your channel because of the compassionate human you are. We love seeing and being brought along to see what you’ll get up to and where your mind is. I personally find the most enjoyment in videos like this.
I’ve been soul-crushingly depressed the past few weeks, and just 6 minutes in you’ve given me more serotonin than I’ve been able to muster in dayyys ❤ just being your magical self. First outfit is absolutely adorable, and ya lovely as ever.
SUCH a cute outfit! honestly do more videos just for you, id rather see you happily making a dress on your own time than getting stressed out and frazzled doing something unfamiliar with
There's nothing wrong with re-using the same patterns! If they work for you, that's awesome! And it's more sustainable to use patterns that you know fit you well, rather than buying new ones for every project. Plus, maybe you'll have an easier time sewing?? (I'm only up to the pattern part of the video so I have no idea how this turns out XD) I can't wait until I figure out how to use my sewing machine and can make cute sewing videos like yours!!
@@dees3179 thank you!! 🤞🏻🤞🏻 that I figure it out this month…although I did just crochet a cardigan for myself so I guess I can still make my own clothes 🤣
I don't know why you worry about making spectacular projects, when we are all just here for you. You are hysterical and captivating no matter what you do! ❤
I legit have a 15 century recreation of this exact dress in linen. It's a chemise, pinafore front laced, shawl tucked in to make the cowl and an apron. ❤❤
First off this is PEAK relaxed spring content and I love it. 🌿 Second I LOVE how the little slugs turned out!!! They are the loveliest strap shape on you and I’m obsessed 😍 Madam Maksy strikes again 👏🏻👏🏻
I'm so glad someone else noticed that! I squealed when I saw the detail in the dress in game and that in particular. In her sketch she had cross lacing so I was holding my breath...
i love your sewing content! a lot of people on youtube that make clothes make everything look so effortless and easy and it's encouraging watching someone who's so chill about the fact that everything doesnt always turn out how you want it to.
I actually really like it when you make something you will actually wear a lot. While cosplay stuff can be cool, I love being practical so I always find enjoyment seeing something being used more than a few times. Also, your dresses aren't boring, ever. And it's fun to follow your journey through making them, so dont ya worry and just make as many practical "boring" clothes ya want!
Okay 3 things: 1 - Rachel, I love your videos and the one of you making stuff for yourself make me happy! They're so cozy and inspired me to start sewing 2 - Your outfits in this video are the cutest patoot-est! The waistcoat and square neck *chef's kiss*, the plaits and fringe/bangs and headscarf and the ret of the fit *chef's kiss* 3 - I think your fanbase should be called The Fellowship of Whimsy and we are The Whimsies
I like that you keep coming back to your favorite patterns - for one, the clothes never come out the same because your inspiration is always wildly different and wonderful. for two, it's encouraging that you know which patterns suit your body so well - maybe someday I'll get there too! that said, please feel free to try new ones or follow your muse wherever you're most interested. it's all entertaining and inspiring as hell ❤
As much as I love all your content - and I do mean all of it - I think videos like this where you make something just because you want to and you’re going to wear it multiple times are my favorite. The vibe is just a lot more chill and you seem a lot less stressed during the process.
I’m in between moving houses and have no access to my sewing machine, so watching you sew such cute outfit pieces with so much joy is vicariously giving me life 🥹
I actually love this kind of content the most! The extravagant projects are fun too but the "sewing cute stuff I'll actually wear" video's are always my favourite. I guess it just hits closer to home? 😂
I know others have already said it, but I think it needs to be said all the time. Not all videos have to be complicated grandiose projects! Honestly I love the more "everyday" style videos, as they are something that make me want to grab some fabric and make something myself. They are comfortable to watch, and equally entertaining as the bigger projects!
Love that you went with 2 separate pieces! Always a good idea, when possible. Also, as an experienced clothes sewer your sewing videos are always a welcome reminder to enjoy the whimsical side of sewing more, and not get so caught up in the rules and 'right' way to do things, so thank you! 😊❤
First of all, it's nice to see you back in your sewing world Rachel. You are glowing working on this dress. 2nd, your beautiful red hair looks stunning, and we've missed all those curls. 3rd, these longer videos are so awesome and spending time with you is the very best gift of all.
Every project you choose to show us is amazing, because you're the one making it. Your passion, humor, and energy shine through every time you're onscreen. Girl, I'd watch you read the phone book! You're a star!
You keep making me remember I've wanted to make my own clothes for as long as I can remember; my mom even got me a surger. I've been too scared to try turning it on lol. anyways, thanks for the reminder that when you have some good patterns that fit you well, your possibilities really are endless!
Just wanna say, as someone who's designing assets for a viddy game for the first time, it's so nice to see people appreciating the little details like npc clothes!! Lovely work as always
I’m like 2 minutes into the video but can I just say your hair in the intro is so freaking stunning, I can’t. The color, the perfect length, the hairstyle, it just suits you soo well
it looks amazing! I have always loved vintage and pioneer style out fits. you did a perfect gob of recreating it it looks better than the video game image you were inspired from. you are very talented don't stop making stuff!
Rachel! those doo-dads are called drop spindles. They were used in medieval Europe to spin wool into thread. (Spinning wheels were big and expensive.) It's cool that they included that in the game. Drop spindles were absolutely just an everyday thing that you could pick up or put down, and speaking from personal experience, probably also a medieval stim toy/fidget spinner.
I can't get over how insanely detailed and beautiful games are these days. The textures and colors are mind blowing. It's fascinating to stop and just look at all the potted plants or windows. Loved this video! The concept of recreating something you liked from a game was neat and refreshing.
I just made my first pinafore dress last week! Technically not done as I ran out of thread, but I picked some up today so I can tack down the lining, attach the straps in the back, and hem that 3/4 circle skirt.
Good on you! The sewing journey is long and troubled for me, but every new garment I make informs the next. Thus is the process of learning in my middle years.
The spools are actually spindles for the making of the yarn wrapped around them. I'm wondering where she keeps the fibers, but it is a cute detail and I loved that you included them.
I didn’t realise how much I missed these types of videos!! Thank you for taking the time to make your videos Rachel - definitely one of my top comfort channels 💕 Hope anyone reading this has a great day xx
Um YES?! Then you can wear it and tell anyone who walks near you "this week's crops are good. We shall bring in much coin." Charisma 100. Also. You and my daughter are kindred spirits as she will refer to people (her siblings) as "smooth brained".
I love when you make 'everyday' clothes & not always cosplay (which I love) or 'glamorous' who-wore-it-better-from-the-oscars types of clothing. This has character and is, frankly, more interesting & accessible. So cute!

I thought that’s what they were!
I was just about to comment that they were drop spindles. I was showed how to use one at a 19th century weekend at a historic site; about a year later, one of my sisters bought a couple.
Came into the comments for this. Yep yep yep.
I was thinking that a few repurposed pencils would have made the job easier. But those are the cutest tiny drop spindles.
I was thinking the same thing! I have some cheap drop spindles made with a wood dowel and a 3d printed disc, but Rachel's are way more *aesthetic* ❤
I want more content of Rachel wandering around video games and finding aesthetic thingies to make. Here for it.
Rachel, you should get the Tudor Tailor, it's a book that goes patterns and history for that kind of stuff. Lots of bodices for you to make too!
Exactly. I don't watch any other sewing content; it's way too stressful.
Yes! This!!
@@thequietinside3201 I recommend Prickly Alpaca of you don’t mind fantasy nonsense. She’s equally chaotic (or probably more actually) in her process of learning and experimenting and also definitely doesn’t claim to know what she’s doing.
@@magnum_cx8805 I absolutely LOVE her, couldn't agree more! I described her to my mom as "Rachel Maksey, but add Gen Z humor." 😆
Rachel, we'll watch you sew anything! It's not the item that makes a video fun to watch, it's you! I love every video you make!
True that! My favourite videos are her chaotic crafts, like when she did the little mouse guy
The Mouse Hole, it killed me with cuteness!
100% agree
Honestly, I'm jealous of your ability to kinda just wing it with sewing and your stuff looks amazing. I am a perfectionist about it too the point of not seeing at all cause of the stress, and fit is still a mystery to me.
Keep up the gremlin vibes if it's what works for you cause it is legit inspirational!
i know you probably won’t see this but i just wanna say that throughout my many years of watching your videos i have always loved your chill making-practical-things videos just as much, if not more, as your fancy project videos. your videos have always been what i go to when i need a break from everything and the more simple project videos are always especially comforting to watch. iv always loved all the content you put out because we get to see you being such a funny and smart person so please don’t worry about making all your videos super complicated, we’ll love them all the same
I could not agree more ♥
The little spools/doodads/trinkets she has hanging from her waist are drop spindles, for spinning yarn from loose wool. I feel like you'd find it soothing to try. I always feel like a good little NPC when I use them at ren faire to make me look like I'm so authentic hahaha
I walk around and sit under trees knitting and sewing. I might need to add my drop spindle to my kit. I’m definitely the NPC
Yes!!! They are more than trinkets, they would be hanging from every woman’s dress!
I caught that detail too. As much as Rachel likes working with wool (her hand felted critters) I agree that she might enjoy learning drop spindle. Keep up the great work! Loving this channel.
this outfit felt like you created new lore for the NPC, like you cosplayed her younger self when she first started
Thank you for your hard work, its appreciated and I love sewing with you.
the little "do-dads" are mini drop spindles. i absolutely LOVE this project. the color. the top. the skirt. the whole thing put together!
I was going to mention this because they are a fun way to make yarn!
This!
I thought it was a Chatelaine. But drop spindles make sense too
They look a lot like a Tapestry Bobbin.
I'm still watching but I just have to say, I thoroughly enjoy the more "mundane" or "boring" projects. These are the things I want to make and constantly wear, so I love seeing other people do theirs and see what catches their eyes 😅💖
Same!
As someone who wants to make all of her Sims4 outfits for herself in real life, I completely agree with this feeling 😂 I actually prefer watching a practical, “going to be worn many times” sewing video than the extravagant ones! It helps give me a new perspective to view my own wardrobe with
Okay…But a Rachel gaming channel is something I never knew it needed until today! ❤
"Do you ever feel yourself being really annoying add a person, but also not going to change?"
Girl, you just described half of my existence 😂
To be honest I missed the simple cozy sewing videos. It's so nice to see one of them again. ❤
Rachel: "dress...laced"
Me: "SPIRAL laced!" yes, out loud. seeing it on a rando npc filled me with nerdy joy
haha, that was me, too!
Same here!
Same!
Same hat.
Same!!
I was checking to see if anyone else commented on the drop spindles. I was unexplainably happy to see them on her belt
“I think I’m gonna use pattern pieces that I’ve always used. I may be a one trick circus bear, but I fear change” literally me every time I sew😂😂
🧡 I really love these "Rachel makes clothes" videos. They are ultimate cozy vibes, and they get me really inspired to actually do some sewing myself.
You're the reason I'm trying to learn to sew, never apologize for making the things you want to make 💜
Rachel is living her medieval(?) flower shop AU... so cute
Definitely jousting swords for squirrels, ALTHOUGH boringly in the “real world” the do-dads around her waist are spindles for spinning wool.
If you look up antique spindle you’ll see lots...LOTS of variations.
🙂🐿🌈❤️
A random thought that came out of nowhere -
I kinda miss the old basement.
They look a lot like mini versions of my lap spindles
I'm jealous of the way Rachel gesticulates & moves with her skirts. the very natural skirt gab before she plants her fist on her hip to pose while she speaks at 25:43 is very artistic. she also generally works for the camera to make the fabric tangible in the way it swings and wrinkles. i wish i had a skirt like this to spin in.
That’s a really cool detail to notice! And you’re right!
Having a very stressful day with a bad headache rn. Dear Rachel, watching your joy from finding smth to create that brings you personally so much happiness is the best cure! Please don't you ever apologize for making this types of videos! This is exactly why we love you and what we are here for. Thank you so much!
You can do a huge 50s poodle skirt with that big leaf and make the whole look leafy/nature themed. Be the leaf if there are no leaves around ❤️
"Be the leaf if there are no leaves around" How is that somehow inspirational? 😂
Making them separates is actually way more historically accurate as well! Post medieval times it was actually quite rare of every day clothes to be one piece dresses as it was impractical for working women to put them on by themselves. I think that top was too cute by itself to get rid of that peplum!
Excuse me, Rachel, this is THE CONTENT I love from you. I mean, I love it all, tbh, but your sewing videos are so cozy and I love them. ❤
If you were going to turn youself into a fantasy creature or fairy who lived in the woodland the leaf might make a good hat
Perhaps a leaf/hat?
already thinking that costume as a whole spring project!!
Loving the green stripe fabric, perhaps that could be an apron ?!
I was thinking of it as a pocket/purse moment. Hat or leaf wings would be cool too.
Totoro vibes
SUCH a cute outfit!
honestly do more videos just for you, id rather see you happily making a dress on your own time than getting stressed out and frazzled doing something unfamiliar with
+
Or doing something just to chase the blinking algorithm. 🙄
Be happy in your world. 😊👍💝
Little do u know Rachel. this is exact the kind of content our whimsical hearts desire!!
The trinkets are for herb bundles as she sells flowers and herbs. The strong thread would be for sturdy bundles and the lightest for a satchet size.
I love when Rachel just sits and talks to us while doing something. ❤ 😊
There's nothing wrong with re-using the same patterns! If they work for you, that's awesome! And it's more sustainable to use patterns that you know fit you well, rather than buying new ones for every project. Plus, maybe you'll have an easier time sewing?? (I'm only up to the pattern part of the video so I have no idea how this turns out XD)
I can't wait until I figure out how to use my sewing machine and can make cute sewing videos like yours!!
Realistically, that peasant NPC probably made HER dress from a re-used pattern . . .
@@TheSaneHatter lol you’re totally right!
Have fun with your sewing machine.
Love seeing these where you make clothes you’d actually wear, gives me hope to be able to do that for myself one day
First off this is PEAK relaxed spring content and I love it. 🌿
Second I LOVE how the little slugs turned out!!! They are the loveliest strap shape on you and I’m obsessed 😍
Madam Maksy strikes again 👏🏻👏🏻
The "spools" look like drop spindles for spinning yarn. Also, spiral laced corset in a video game??? Color me shocked!!
Okay 3 things:
1 - Rachel, I love your videos and the one of you making stuff for yourself make me happy! They're so cozy and inspired me to start sewing
2 - Your outfits in this video are the cutest patoot-est! The waistcoat and square neck *chef's kiss*, the plaits and fringe/bangs and headscarf and the ret of the fit *chef's kiss*
3 - I think your fanbase should be called The Fellowship of Whimsy and we are The Whimsies
This is easily my absolute favorite type of Rachel Maksy content!
Dude I freaking love that you included the gameplay !! Such a lovely touch and would love to see more gamer Rachel in the future
I've been too scared to try turning it on lol.
anyways, thanks for the reminder that when you have some good patterns that fit you well, your possibilities really are endless!
omg I just got to 12:44 and you're talking about the new machine you haven't started using yet. I feel so validated hahaha
I absolutely LOVE your sewing content, from inspiration to doodles to being a floor gremlin and the completed masterpieces!
The videos of you sewing items you're going to wear are actually my favourite
Rachel! those doo-dads are called drop spindles.
This project is so beautiful and satisfying to watch! I want more of your exclusive performances, you sing so well 💖✨
I didn’t realise how much I missed these types of videos!!
So cute!
Adorable result and fully agree it's amazing to start with fabric and end up with a final clothing piece!
This is so nice! It is fun seeing how much you've learned about sewing over the past few years! It is really inspiring to persevere with the hobby.
Actually I love these kind of videos MOST where you sew clothes that you actually wear because it inspires me to do the same! Pls we need more ❤
